Centrality dependence of Pi- Production and Stopping in p-A Collisions at 18 GeV/c

First results are presented from BNL experiment E910 on pion production and stopping in proton-Be, Cu, and Au collisions at a beam momentum of 18 GeV/c. We characterize the centrality of the collisions using the measured number of "grey" tracks, Ngrey, and a derived quantity, nu, the number of inelastic nucleon-nucleon scatterings suffered by the projectile during the collision. We find that for the three targets the average backward rapidity shift of the leading proton follows a common trend versus nu with the projectile losing, on average, 2 units of rapidity in the first 2-3 scatterings. The average rapidity shift increases more slowly with subsequent scatterings reaching a maximum of 2.5 units. The pi- multiplicity measured within the E910 acceptance saturates with increasing nu in p-Au collisions while the pi- multiplicity in p-Be collisions increases faster with nu than expected from the wounded-nucleon model. Comparisons of our data with the RQMD cascade model suggest that in very central p-Au collisions most of the pions are produced near zero rapidity in the lab.

Measuring centrality with slow protons in proton-nucleus collisions at the AGS

Experiment 910 has measured slow protons and deuterons from collisions of 18 GeV/c protons with Be, Cu, and Au targets at the BNL AGS. These correspond to the ``grey tracks'' first observed in emulsion experiments. We report on their momentum and angular distributions and investigate their use in measuring the centrality of a collision, as defined by the mean number of projectile-nucleon interactions. The relation between the measured Ngrey and the mean number of interactions, nu(Ngrey), is studied using several simple models, one newly proposed, as well as the RQMD event generator. RQMD is shown to reproduce the Ngrey distribution, and exhibits a dependence of Ngrey on centrality that is similar to the behavior of the simple models. We find a strong linear dependence of average Ngrey on nu, with a constant of proportionality that varies with target. For the Au target, we report a relative systematic error for extracting nu(Ngrey) that lies between 10% and 20% over all Ngrey.

Field Theory on the von Neumann Lattice and the Quantized Hall Conductance of Bloch Electrons

We construct useful sets of one-particle states in the quantum Hall system based on the von Neumann lattice. Using the set of momentum states, we develop a field-theoretical formalism and apply the formalism to the system subjected to a periodic potential. The topological formula of the Hall conductance written by the winding number of propagator is generalized to Bloch electrons. The relation between the winding number and the Chern number is clarified.

Quantum Hall Dynamics on von Neumann Lattice

Quantum Hall Dynamics is formulated on von Neumann lattice representation where electrons in Landau levels are defined on lattice sites and are treated systematically like lattice fermions. We give a proof of the integer Hall effect, namely the Hall conductance is the winding number of the propagator in the momentum space and is quantized exactly as integer multiple of ${e^2}/h$ in quantum Hall regime of the system of interactions and disorders. This shows that a determination of the fine structure constant from integer quantum Hall effect is in fact possible. We present also a unified mean field theory of the fractional Hall effect for the in-compressible quantum liquid states based on flux condensation and point out that the known Hofstadter butterfly spectrum of the tight binding model has a deep connection with the fractional Hall effect of the continuum electrons. Thus two of the most intriguing and important physical phenomena of recent years, the integer Hall effect and fractional Hall effect are studied and are solved partly by von Neumann lattice representation.

Duality Relation among Periodic Potential Problems in the Lowest Landau Level

Using a momentum representation of a magnetic von Neumann lattice, we study a two-dimensional electron in a uniform magnetic field and obtain one-particle spectra of various periodic short-range potential problems in the lowest Landau level. We find that the energy spectra satisfy a duality relation between a period of the potential and a magnetic length. The energy spectra consist of the Hofstadter-type bands and flat bands. We also study the connection between a periodic short-range potential problem and a tight-binding model.

A Start-Timing Detector for the Collider Experiment PHENIX at RHIC-BNL

We describe a start-timing detector for the PHENIX experiment at the relativistic heavy-ion collider RHIC. The role of the detector is to detect a nuclear collision, provide precise time information with an accuracy of 50ps, and determine the collision point along the beam direction with a resolution of a few cm. Technical challenges are that the detector must be operational in a wide particle-multiplicity range in a high radiation environment and a strong magnetic field. We present the performance of the prototype and discuss the final design of the detector.

Integer Quantum Hall Effect with Realistic Boundary Condition : Exact Quantization and Breakdown

A theory of integer quantum Hall effect(QHE) in realistic systems based on von Neumann lattice is presented. We show that the momentum representation is quite useful and that the quantum Hall regime(QHR), which is defined by the propagator in the momentum representation, is realized. In QHR, the Hall conductance is given by a topological invariant of the momentum space and is quantized exactly. The edge states do not modify the value and topological property of $σ_{xy}$ in QHR. We next compute distribution of current based on effective action and find a finite amount of current in the bulk and the edge, generally. Due to the Hall electric field in the bulk, breakdown of the QHE occurs. The critical electric field of the breakdown is proportional to $B^{3/2}$ and the proportional constant has no dependence on Landau levels in our theory, in agreement with the recent experiments.

Is Hall Conductance in Hall Bar Geometry a Topological Invariant?

A deep connection between the Hall conductance in realistic situation and a topological invariant is pointed out based on von-Neumann lattice representation in which Landau level electrons have minimum spatial extensions. We show that the Hall conductance has no finite size correction in quantum Hall regime, but a coefficient of induced Chern-Simons term in QED$_3$ has a small finite size correction, although both of them are similar topological invariant.

Magnetic von-Neumann lattice for two-dimensional electrons in the magnetic field

One-particle eigenstates and eigenvalues of two-dimensional electrons in the strong magnetic field with short range impurity and impurities, cosine potential, boundary potential, and periodic array of short range potentials are obtained by magnetic von-Neumann lattice in which Landau level wave functions have minimum spatial extensions. We find that there is a dual correspondence between cosine potential and lattice kinetic term and that the representation based on the von-Neumann lattice is quite useful for solving the system's dynamics.
