Matrix elements of SU(6) generators for baryons with arbitrary $N_c$ quarks in mixed symmetric states $[N_c-1,1]$

We derive general analytic formulae for the matrix elements of the SU(6) generators for mixed symmetric $[N_c-1,1]$ spin-flavor states with an arbitrary number $N_c$ of quarks. They are relevant for baryon spectroscopy in the $1/N_c$ expansion method applied to light baryons and can be used to study excited states. In this way previous work on non-strange baryons can be extended to both non-strange and strange baryons.

Comparative analysis of large Nc QCD and quark model approaches to baryons

We show that a remarkable compatibility exists between the results of a potential model with constituent quarks and the 1/Nc expansion mass formula for strange and nonstrange baryon resonances. Such compatibility brings support to the basic assumptions of relativistic quark models and sheds light on the physical content of the model-independent large Nc mass formula. Good agreement between both approaches is also found for heavy baryons, made of one heavy and two light quarks, in the ground state band.

Light and heavy baryon masses: the 1/N_c expansion and the quark model

We establish a connection between the quark model and the 1/N_c expansion mass formulas used in the description of baryon resonances. We show that a remarkable compatibility exists between the two methods in the light and heavy baryon sectors. In particular, the band number used to classify baryons in the 1/N_c expansion is explained by the quark model and the mass formulas for both approaches are consistent.

New look at the $[{\bf 70},1^-]$ baryon multiplet in the $1/N_c$ expansion

So far, the masses of excited states of mixed orbital symmetry and in particular those of nonstrange $[{\bf 70},1^-]$ baryons derived in the $1/N_c$ expansion were based on the separation of a system of $N_c$ quarks into a symmetric core and an excited quark. Here we avoid this separation and show that an advantage of this new approach is to substantially reduce the number of linearly independent operators entering the mass formula. A novelty is that the isospin-isospin term becomes as dominant in $Δ$ as the spin-spin term in $N$ resonances.

Group Theoretical Analysis of the Wave Function of the $[{\bf 70},1^-]$ Nonstrange Baryons in the $1/N_c$ Expansion

Using standard group theoretical techniques we construct the exact wave function of the $[{\bf 70},1^-]$ multiplet in the orbital, spin and flavor space. This symmetric wave function is compared to that customarily used in the $1/N_c$ expansion, which is asymmetric. The comparison is made by analyzing the matrix elements of various operators entering the mass formula. These matrix elements are calculated by the help of isoscalar factors of the permutation group, specially derived for this purpose as a function of $N_c$. We also compare two distinct methods used in the study of the $[{\bf 70},1^-]$ multiplet. In the first method the generators are divided into two parts, one part acting on a subsystem of $N_c-1$ quarks called core and another on the separated quark. In the second method the system is treated as a whole. We show that the latter is simpler and allows to clearly reveal the physically important operators in the mass formula.

The wave function of $[\bf{70},1^-]$ baryons in the $1/N_c$ expansion

Much work has been devoted to the study of nonstrange baryons belonging to the $[\textbf{70},1^-]$ multiplet in the framework of the $1/N_c$ expansion. Using group theoretical arguments here we examine the relation between the exact wave function and the approximate one, customarily used in applications where the system is separated into a ground state core and an excited quark. We show that the exact and approximate wave functions globally give similar results for all of mass operators presented in this work. However we find that the inclusion of operators acting separately on the core and on the excited quark deteriorates the fit and leads to unsatisfactory values for the coefficients which encode the quark dynamics. Much better results are obtained when we include operators acting on the whole system, both for the exact and the approximate wave function.

Analysis of Negative Parity Baryon Photoproduction Amplitudes in the $1/N_c$ Expansion

We study the photoproduction helicity amplitudes of negative parity baryons in the context of the $1/N_c$ expansion of QCD. A complete analysis to next-to-leading order is carried out. The results show sub-leading effects to be within the magnitude expected from the $1/N_c$ power counting. They also show significant deviations from the quark model, in particular the need for 2-body effects.

Baryon Regge Trajectories in the Light of the $1/N_c$ Expansion

We analyze Regge trajectories in terms of the $1/N_c$ expansion of QCD. Neglecting spin-orbit contributions to the large $N_c$ baryon mass operator, we consider the evolution of the spin-flavor singlet component of the masses with respect to the angular momentum. We find two distinct and remarkably linear Regge trajectories for symmetric and for mixed symmetric spin-flavor multiplets.

Baryon resonances in large N_c QCD

This thesis deals with the study of baryon spectra in the context of the $1/N_c$ expansion. The standard tool to study baryon properties is the constituent quark model. The results are naturally model dependent. The $1/N_c$ expansion generates a new perturbative approach to QCD, convenient for low momentum transfer. It provides a new theoretical method that is quantitative, systematic and predictive. In the first part of the thesis, the $1/N_c$ expansion is introduced as well as the baryon structure at large $N_c$. A summary of important results for ground-state baryons is provided. The second part of the thesis is devoted to excited baryon states. The symmetric orbital states are treated by analogy to the ground state. For mixed symmetric states, two approaches are presented. The traditional one starts from the decoupling of the wave function into an excited quark and a symmetric core. To make the problem tractable the wave function is treated approximately, justified by a Hartree scheme. This approach is applied to the study of the $[{\bf 70},\ell^+] (\ell=0,2)$ multiplets (nonstrange and strange cases) and of the $[{\bf 56},4^+]$ multiplet. An important physical result is the dependence of the spin dependent terms of the mass operator on the excitation energy. Recently we suggested a new approach based on a rigorous group theoretical treatment of the matrix elements of SU(4). No decoupling and no approximations are necessary. When applied to the $[{\bf 70},1^-]$ nonstrange multiplet, it is found that the leading corrections to the mass operator are of order $1/N_c$ instead of $N_c^0$, as predicted by the decoupling procedure.

Baryon resonances in large $N_c$ QCD

The baryon spectra are discussed in the context of the $1/N_c$ expansion approach, with emphasis on mixed symmetric states. The contributions of the spin dependent terms as a function of the excitation energy are shown explicitly. At large energies these contributions are expected to vanish.

The $[{\bf 70},1^-]$ baryon multiplet in the $1/N_c$ expansion revisited

The mass splittings of the baryons belonging to the $[{\bf 70},1^-]$-plet are derived by using a simple group theoretical approach to the matrix elements of the mass formula. The basic conclusion is that the first order correction to the baryon masses is of order $1/N_c$ instead of order $N^0_c$, as previously found. The conceptual difference between the ground state and the excited states is therefore removed.

Excited $[{\bf 70},\ell^+]$ baryon resonances in large $N_c$ QCD

We summarize results obtained in the $1/N_c$ expansion method for the masses of baryon resonances belonging to the $[{\bf 70},\ell^+]$ multiplet. They represent an extension of our previous studies from two to three flavors. A better approach to mixed symmetric states of any angular momentum and parity is also outlined.

Masses of $[{\bf 70},\ell^+]$ Baryons in the $1/N_c$ Expansion

The masses of positive $[{\bf 70},0^+]$ and $[{\bf 70},2^+]$ nonstrange and strange baryons are calculated in the $1/N_c$ expansion. The approach is based on the separation of a system of $N_c$ quarks into an excited core and an excited quark. The previous work for two flavor baryons is now extended to include strange baryons, to first order in SU(3)-flavor breaking. We show that the extension to $N_f = 3$ maintains the regularities previously observed in the behaviour of the linear term in $N_c$, of the spin-spin and of the spin-orbit terms. In particular the contribution of the spin-dependent terms decrease with the excitation energy, the dominant term remaining the spin-spin term.

Masses of $[{\bf 70},\ell^+]$ baryons in large $N_c$ QCD

Previous work is extended from SU(2) to SU(3) and we present results for the mass spectrum of the $[{\bf 70},\ell^+]$ ($\ell=0,2$) nonstrange and strange baryons in the $1/N_c$ expansion. We show that the dominant term is the spin-spin interaction and its contribution vanishes at large excitations.

Matrix Elements of SU(6) Generators for Baryons at Arbitrary $N_c$

We present explicit formulas for the matrix elements of the SU(6) generators for totally symmetric spin-flavor states, relevant for baryon spectroscopy in large $N_c$ QCD. We rely on the interplay between two different methods to calculate these matrix elements. As an outcome, general analytic formulas of the corresponding SU(6) isoscalar factors are derived for arbitrary $N_c$. These results can be used to study excited states of nonstrange and strange baryons.

The $[\bf{56},4^+]$ baryons in the $1/N_c$ expansion

Using the $1/N_c$ expansion of QCD we analyze the spectrum of positive parity resonances with strangeness $S = 0, -1, -2$ and -3 in the 2-3 GeV mass region, supposed to belong to the $[\textbf{56},4^+]$ multiplet. The mass operator is similar to that of $[\textbf{56},2^+]$, previously studied in the literature. The analysis of the latter is revisited. In the $[\textbf{56},4^+]$ multiplet we find that the spin-spin term brings the dominant contribution and that the spin-orbit term is entirely negligible in the hyperfine interaction, in agreement with constituent quark model results. More data are strongly desirable, especially in the strange sector in order to fully exploit the power of this approach.

Excited $[{\bf 70, \ell^+}]$ baryons in large $N_c$ QCD

The masses of the positive parity $[{\bf 70},0^+]$ and $[{\bf 70},2^+]$ non-strange baryons are calculated in large $N_c$ QCD by considering the most dominant operators in an $1/N_c$ expansion. The approach is based on the introduction of an excited core, obtained after the last particle (an excited quark) has been removed. Configuration mixing is neglected, for simplicity. Although being a sub-leading $1/N_c$ order, we find that the spin-spin interaction plays a dominant role in describing the data. The role of $N_c^ 0$ operators is also pointed out. We show how the contribution of the linear term in $N_c$, of the spin-spin and spin-orbit terms vary with the excitation energy.
