Knudsen-to-Hydrodynamic Crossover in Liquid 3He in a High-Porosity Aerogel

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the drag force acting on a high porosity aerogel immersed in liquid ${}^3$He and its effect on sound propagation. The drag force is characterized by the Knudsen number, which is defined as the ratio of the quasiparticle mean free path to the radius of an aerogel strand. Evidence of the Knudsen-hydrodynamic crossover is clearly demonstrated by a drastic change in the temperature dependence of ultrasound attenuation in 98% porosity aerogel. Our theoretical analysis shows that the frictional sound damping caused by the drag force is governed by distinct laws in the two regimes, providing excellent agreement with the experimental observation.

Thermalization of the system "3He-aerogel" at 1.5 K

At the present work we propose a new method for studying the processes of thermodynamic equilibrium setting in the adsorbed 3He film in a porous media. By this method we have studied the thermalization of the adsorbed 3He on the silica aerogel surface at the temperature 1.5 K. The process of the thermodynamic equilibrium setting was controlled by measuring of the pressure in the experimental cell, the amplitude of the NMR signal and the time of the nuclear spin-spin and spin-lattice relaxation times of an adsorbed 3He. The thermodynamic equilibrium setting in the system "adsorbed helium-3 - aerogel" has the characteristic time 26 min.

Orbital glass and spin glass states of 3He-A in aerogel

Glass states of superfluid A-like phase of 3He in aerogel induced by random orientations of aerogel strands are investigated theoretically and experimentally. In anisotropic aerogel with stretching deformation two glass phases are observed. Both phases represent the anisotropic glass of the orbital ferromagnetic vector l -- the orbital glass (OG). The phases differ by the spin structure: the spin nematic vector d can be either in the ordered spin nematic (SN) state or in the disordered spin-glass (SG) state. The first phase (OG-SN) is formed under conventional cooling from normal 3He. The second phase (OG-SG) is metastable, being obtained by cooling through the superfluid transition temperature, when large enough resonant continuous radio-frequency excitation are applied. NMR signature of different phases allows us to measure the parameter of the global anisotropy of the orbital glass induced by deformation.

Ultrasound attenuation and a P-B-T phase diagram of superfluid 3He in 98% aerogel

Longitudinal sound attenuation measurements in superfluid 3He in 98% aerogel were conducted at pressures between 14 and 33 bar and in magnetic fields up to 4.44 kG. The temperature dependence of the ultrasound attenuation in the A-like phase was determined for the entire superfluid region exploiting the field induced meta-stable A-like phase at the highest field. In the lower field, the A-B transition in aerogel was identified by a smooth jump in attenuation on both cooling and warming. Based on the transitions observed on warming, a phase diagram as a function of pressure (P), temperature (T) and magnetic field (B) is constructed. We find that the A-B phase boundary in aerogel recedes in a drastically different manner than in bulk in response to an increasing magnetic field. The implications of the observed phase diagram are discussed.

Aerogel Waveplates

Optical transmission measurements were made on 98% porosity silica aerogel samples under various degrees of uniaxial strain. Uniaxially compressed aerogels exhibit large birefringence, proportional to the amount of compression, up to the 15% strain studied. The birefringence is mostly reversible and reproducible through multiple compression-decompression cycles. Our study demonstrates that uniaxially strained high porosity aerogels can be used as tunable waveplates in a broad spectral range.

X-ray Studies of Structure and Defects in Solid 4He from 50 mK to Melting

Recent measurements have found non-classical rotational inertia (NCRI) in solid 4He starting at T ~ 200 mK, leading to speculation that a supersolid state may exist in these materials. Differences in the NCRI fraction due to the growth method and annealing history imply that defects play an important role in the effect. Using x-ray synchrotron radiation, we have studied the nature of the crystals and the properties of the defects in solid 4He at temperatures down to 50 mK. Measurements of peak intensities and lattice parameters do not show indications of the supersolid transition. Using growth methods similar to those of groups measuring the NCRI we find that large crystals form. Scanning with a small (down to 10 x 10 um2) beam, we resolve a mosaic structure within these crystals consistent with numerous small angle grain boundaries. The mosaic shows significant shifts over time even at temperatures far from melting. We discuss the relevance of these defects to the NCRI observations.

Torsional oscillator and synchrotron x-ray experiments on solid 4He in aerogel

X-ray diffraction experiments show that solid 4He grown in aerogel is highly polycrystalline, with a hcp crystal structure (as in bulk) and a crystallite size of approximately 100 nm. In contrast to the expectation that the highly disordered solid will have a large supersolid fraction, torsional oscillator measurements show a behavior that is strikingly similar to high purity crystals grown from the superfluid phase. The low temperature supersolid fraction is only ~3x10-4 and the onset temperature is ~ 100 mK.

Longitudinal and Transverse NMR in Superfluid 3He in Anisotropic Aerogel

It was found that NMR properties of both superfluid phases of $^3$He in anisotropic aerogel can be described in terms of the bulk superfluid order parameters with the orbital order parameter vector fixed by anisotropy of the aerogel sample. It was also shown that by a proper squeezing it is possible to get the aerogel sample with isotropic NMR properties.

Soliton-like Spin State in the A-like Phase of 3He in Anisotropic Aerogel

We have found a new stable spin state in the A-like phase of superfluid 3He confined to intrinsically anisotropic aerogel. The state can be formed by radiofrequency excitation applied while cooling through the superfluid transition temperature and its NMR properties are different from the standard A-like phase obtained in the limit of very small excitation. It is possible that this new state is formed by textural domain walls pinned by aerogel.

Ultrasound attenuation of superfluid $^{3}$He in aerogel

We have performed longitudinal ultrasound (9.5 MHz) attenuation measurements in the B-phase of superfluid $^3$He in 98% porosity aerogel down to the zero temperature limit for a wide range of pressures at zero magnetic field. The absolute attenuation was determined by direct transmission of sound pulses. Compared to the bulk fluid, our results revealed a drastically different behavior in attenuation, which is consistent with theoretical accounts with gapless excitations and a collision drag effect.

Longitudinal NMR and Spin States in the A-like Phase of 3He in Aerogel

It was found that two different spin states of the A-like phase can be obtained in aerogel sample. In one of these states we have observed the signal of the longitudinal NMR, while in another state no trace of such a signal was found. The states also have different properties in transverse NMR experiments. Longitudinal NMR signal was also observed in the B-like phase of 3He in aerogel.

Specific Heat of Disordered $^{3}$He

Porous aerogel is a source of elastic scattering in superfluid 3He and modifies the properties of the superfluid, suppressing the transition temperature and order parameter. The specific heat jumps for the B-phase of superfluid 3He in aerogel have been measured as a function of pressure and interpreted using the homogeneous and inhomogeneous isotropic scattering models. The specific heat jumps for other p-wave states are estimated for comparison.

Compressed Silica Aerogels for the Study of Superfluid 3He

We have performed Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) on uniaxially strained aerogels and measured the strain-induced structural anisotropy. We use a model to connect our SAXS results to anisotropy of the 3He quasiparticle mean free path in aerogel.

Low velocity quantum reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates

We studied quantum reflection of Bose-Einstein condensates at normal incidence on a square array of silicon pillars. For incident velocities of 2.5-26 mm/s observations agreed with theoretical predictions that the Casimir-Polder potential of a reduced density surface would reflect slow atoms with much higher probability. At low velocities (0.5-2.5 mm/s), we observed that the reflection probability saturated around 60% rather than increasing towards unity. We present a simple model which explains this reduced reflectivity as resulting from the combined effects of the Casimir-Polder plus mean field potential and predicts the observed saturation. Furthermore, at low incident velocities, the reflected condensates show collective excitations.

The A-B Transition of Superfluid Helium-3 in Aerogel and the Effect of Anisotropic Scattering

We report the results of high frequency acoustic shear impedance measurement on superfluid helium-3 confined in 98% porosity silica aerogel. Using 8.69 MHz continuous wave excitation, we measured the acoustic shear impedance as a function of temperature for the sample pressure of 28.4 and 33.5 bar. We observed the A-B transition on warming in zero magnetic field. Our observations show that the A and B phases in aerogel coexist in a temperature range of about 100 micro-Kelvin in width. We propose that the difference in the relative stability of the A and B phases, arising from anisotropic scattering, can account for our observations.

Specific Heat of Disordered Superfluid $^{3}$He

The specific heat of superfluid $^{3}$He, disordered by a silica aerogel, is found to have a sharp discontinuity marking the thermodynamic transition to superfluidity at a temperature reduced from that of bulk $^{3}$He. The magnitude of the discontinuity is also suppressed. This disorder effect can be understood from the Ginzburg-Landau theory which takes into account elastic quasiparticle scattering suppressing both the transition temperature and the amplitude of the order parameter. We infer that the limiting temperature dependence of the specific heat is linear at low temperatures in the disordered superfluid state, consistent with predictions of gapless excitations everywhere on the Fermi surface.

Phase Diagram of the Superfluid Phases of 3He in 98% Aerogel

The phase diagram of the superfluid phases of $^{3}$He in 98% aerogel was determined in the range of pressure from 15 to 33 bars and for fields up to 3 kG using high-frequency sound. The superfluid transition in aerogel at 33.4 bars is field independent from 0 to 5 kG and shows no evidence of an $A_{1}-A_{2}$ splitting. The first-order transition between the A and B-phases is suppressed by a magnetic field, and exhibits strong supercooling at high pressures. We show that the equilibrium phase in zero applied field is the B-phase with at most a region of A-phase {\small $\alt$} 20 $μ$K just below T${_c}$ at a pressure of 33.4 bars. This is in contrast to pure $^{3}$He which has a large stable region of A-phase and a polycritical point. The quadratic coefficient for magnetic field suppression of the AB-transition, $g_{a}(β)$, was obtained. The pressure dependence of $g_{a}(β)$ is markedly different from that for the pure superfluid, $g_{0}(β)$, which diverges at a polycritical pressure of 21 bars. We compare our results with calculations from the homogeneous scattering model for $g_{a}(β)$, defined in a Ginzburg-Landau theory in terms of strong-coupling parameters $β$. We find qualitatively good agreement with the experiment if the strong-coupling corrections are rescaled from known values of the $β$'s for pure $^{3}$He, reduced by the suppression of the superfluid transition temperature. The calculations indicate that the polycritical pressure in the aerogel system is displaced well above the melting pressure and out of experimental reach. We cannot account for the puzzling supercooling of the aerogel AB-transition in zero applied field within the framework of known nucleation scenarios.

Nucleation and Interfacial Coupling between Pure and Dirty Superfluid Phases of 3He

The nucleation of the first order phase transition of superfluid 3He-B from superfluid 3He-A is quite remarkable since it requires a seed of the order of a micron. We have studied this nucleation for 3He confined to a very dilute silica aerogel. This dirty superfluid behaves in a manner similar to previous reports for the pure superfluid. But we have discovered a novel magnetically driven nucleation switch acting on the pure superfluid B-phase. Lastly, we find the surprising result that the proximity effect between the pure and dirty superfluids at their interface is insufficient to nucleate the B-phase in either superfluid.
