The Tunka-133 EAS Cherenkov light array: status of 2011

A new EAS Cherenkov light array, Tunka-133, with ~1 km^2 geometrical area has been installed at the Tunka Valley (50 km from Lake Baikal) in 2009. The array permits a detailed study of cosmic ray energy spectrum and mass composition in the energy range 10^16 - 10^18 eV with a uniform method. We describe the array construction, DAQ and methods of the array calibration. The method of energy reconstruction and absolute calibration of measurements are discussed. The analysis of spatial and time structure of EAS Cherenkov light allows to estimate the depth of the EAS maximum X_max. The results on the all particles energy spectrum and the mean depth of the EAS maximum X_max vs. primary energy derived from the data of two winter seasons (2009 -- 2011), are presented. Preliminary results of joint operation of the Cherenkov array with antennas for detection of EAS radio signals are shown. Plans for future upgrades -- deployment of remote clusters, radioantennas and a scintillator detector network and a prototype of the HiSCORE gamma-telescope -- are discussed.

Simulation of propagating EAS Cherenkov radiation over the ocean surface

We present computing results of the Cherenkov light propagation in air and water from extensive air showers developing over the ocean. Limits on zenith angles of the showers, at which the registration of flashes of reflected Cherenkov photons by the satellite-based detector TUS is possible, are analyzed with consideration for waves on the ocean surface.

Possibility of Using a Satellite-Based Detector for Recording Cherenkov Light from Ultrahigh-Energy Extensive Air Showers Penetrating into the Ocean Water

We have estimated the reflected component of Cherenkov radiation, which arises in developing of an extensive air shower with primary energy of 10^20 eV over the ocean surface. It has been shown that, under conditions of the TUS experiment, a flash of the reflected Cherenkov photons at the end of the fluorescence track can be identified in showers with zenith angles up to 20 degrees.

The Tunka-133 EAS Chrenkov array - status, first results and plans

The new EAS Cherenkov array Tunka-133 with about 1 km**2 geometric acceptance area is installed in the Tunka Valley (50 km from Lake Baikal). The array willpermit a detailed study of cosmic ray energy spectrum and mass composition in the energy range of 10**15 - 10**18 eV with uniform method. The array consistsof 19 clusters, each composed of 7 optical detectors with 20 cm PMTs. Since November 2008, the first 12 clusters are in operation, commissioning of the whole array is planned for September 2009 (At the time of submission of this paperto electronic arXiv(February 2010) the completed Tunka-133 array is already taking data). We describe the array construction and DAQ, preliminary results and plans for the future development: deployment of radio-antennas and muon detectors network.

On the angular distribution of extensive air showers

Angular distributions of extensive air showers with different number of charged particles in the range 2.5x10^5--4x10^7 are derived using the experimental data obtained with the EAS MSU array. Possible approximations of the obtained distributions with different empiric functions available in literature, are analysed. It is shown that the exponential function provides the best approximation of the angular distributions in the sense of the chi-squared criterion.

One-dimensional Hybrid Approach to Extensive Air Shower Simulation

An efficient scheme for one-dimensional extensive air shower simulation and its implementation in the program CONEX are presented. Explicit Monte Carlo simulation of the high-energy part of hadronic and electromagnetic cascades in the atmosphere is combined with a numeric solution of cascade equations for smaller energy sub-showers to obtain accurate shower predictions. The developed scheme allows us to calculate not only observables related to the number of particles (shower size) but also ionization energy deposit profiles which are needed for the interpretation of data of experiments employing the fluorescence light technique. We discuss in detail the basic algorithms developed and illustrate the power of the method. It is shown that Monte Carlo, numerical, and hybrid air shower calculations give consistent results which agree very well with those obtained within the CORSIKA program.

The end of the galactic cosmic-ray energy spectrum - a phenomenological view

Two structures in the all-particle energy spectrum of cosmic rays, the knee at 4 PeV and the second knee around 400 PeV are proposed to be explained by a phenomenological model, the poly gonato model, connecting direct and indirect measurements. Within this approach the knee is caused by a successive cut-off of the flux for individual elements starting with protons at 4.5 PeV. The second knee is interpreted as the end of the stable nuclei of the periodic table. To check some key features of this model calculations of the cosmic ray energy spectrum and the propagation path length at energies from 10^14 to 10^19 eV have been performed within the framework of a combined approach based on the diffusion model of cosmic rays and a direct simulation of charged-particle trajectories in the Galaxy.

First Results of Fast One-dimensional Hybrid Simulation of EAS Using CONEX

A hybrid simulation code is developed that is suited for fast one-dimensional simulations of shower profiles, including fluctuations. It combines the Monte Carlo simulation of high energy interactions with a fast numerical solution of cascade equations for the resulting distributions of secondary particles. Results obtained with this new code, called CONEX, are presented and compared to CORSIKA predictions.

Distribution of EAS arrival times according to data of the EAS-1000 prototype array

We have analysed arrival times of extensive air showers (EAS) registered with the EAS-1000 prototype array during the period from August, 1997 till February, 1999. Our analysis has revealed that though the vast majority of samples of consecutive time intervals between EAS arrival times obey the exponential distribution, there are sequences of showers that have another distribution and thus violate the homogeneity hypothesis. The search for correlation between such events and clusters of showers and events with big delays between arrival times was also carried out.

Cosmic Ray Air Shower Characteristics in the Framework of the Parton-Based Gribov-Regge Model NEXUS

The purpose of this paper is twofold: first we want to introduce a new type of hadronic interaction model (NEXUS), which has a much more solid theoretical basis as, for example, presently used models like QGSJET and VENUS, and ensures therefore a much more reliable extrapolation towards high energies. Secondly, we want to promote an extensive air shower (EAS) calculation scheme, based on cascade equations rather than explicit Monte Carlo simulations, which is very accurate in calculations of main EAS characteristics and extremely fast concerning computing time. We employ the NEXUS model to provide the necessary data on particle production in hadron-air collisions and present the average EAS characteristics for energies 10^14 - 10^17 eV. The experimental data of the casa-blanka group are analyzed in the framework of the new model.
