Excitation of open charm and factorization breaking in rapidity gap events at HERA

We develop the pQCD description of diffraction excitation of heavy flavours in DIS and we derive the analytic formulas for the mass spectrum in leading log$m_f^{2}$. The result illustrates nicely non-factorization properties of the QCD pomeron. We predict a very steep rise of the charm content of diffraction dissociation of photons at small $x_{\Pom}$. We evaluate the contribution of open charm to scaling violations in the structure function of the pomeron.

Factorization properties of the diffraction dissociation of longitudinal photons

We develop the pQCD description of the diffraction dissociation (DD) of longitudinal photons. We demonstrate that the longitudinal diffractive structure function does not factor into the flux of pomerons and the partonic structure function of the pomeron, thus defying the usually assumed Regge factorization. In contrast to DD of the transverse photons, DD of the longitudinal photons is strongly peaked at $β=1$. We comment on duality properties of DD in deep inelastic scattering.

How to measure the pion structure function at HERA

We suggest a method of determination of the pion structure function down to x \simeq 10^{-4} based on semi-exclusive deep inelastic scattering off protons. The idea is to exploit the nonperturbative πN$ and πΔFock components of the nucleon, which contribute significantly to deep inelastic scattering and dominate the fragmentation of protons into fast neutrons and deltas. The intrinsic factorization properties of the semi-exclusive cross section give a good test for the validity of this approach.

Inclusive Heavy-Flavor Production from Nuclei

We describe a light-cone wave function formulation for hadroproduction of heavy-flavors at high energies. At moderate values of $x_F$ heavy-flavor production can be viewed as a diffractive excitation of heavy quark-antiquark Fock states, present in the interacting gluon from the projectile. The approach developed here is well suited to address coherence effects in heavy-quark production from nuclei at small values of $x_{t} \lsim 0.1\cdot A^{-1/3}$.

Universal pattern in (e,e'p) at large missing momenta: quasi-deuteron or diffractive final state interactions?

The intrinsic single particle momentum distributions in nuclei are supposed to show a universal behavior at large momenta, dominated by short-range correlated pairs, or quasi-deuterons. We discuss whether the quasi-deuteron universality survives the final state interaction effects, which are present in the missing momentum spectra measured in $A(e,e'p)$ experiments at GeV energies. We demonstrate that in the observed missing momentum spectra an approximate universality is present, but originating from the universal pattern of diffractive final state interactions of the struck proton independent of the target nucleus.

Do final state interactions obscure short range correlation effects in quasielastic $A(e,e'p)$ scattering?

Are short range correlations in the ground state of the target nucleus (initial state correlations ISC)observable inexperiments on quasielastic $A(e,e'p)$ scattering at large missing momentum $p_{m}$? Will the missing momentum spectrum observed at CEBAF be overwhelmed by final state interactions of the struck proton? Taking the $^{4}He$ nucleus with a realistic model wave function for a testing ground, we present a full calculation of the missing momentum distribution in inclusive $^{4}He(e,e'p)$ scattering. We find a complex interplay and strong quantum-mechanical interference of FSI and ISC contributions to scattering at large $p_{m}$, with drastic change of the interference pattern from the (anti)parallel to transverse kinematics. We show that in all the kinematical conditions, for missing momenta $p_{m}\gsim 1$\,fm$^{-1}$, quasielastic scattering is dominated by FSI effects and the sensitivity to details of the nuclear ground state is lost. The origin of the FSI dominance is well understood and can be traced back to the anisotropic behaviour of FSI which is long ranged in the longitudinal direction and short ranged in the transverse direction in the opposite to the short ranged ground state correlations.

Final state interactions and $NN$ correlations: are the latter observable?

Are effects of short range correlations in the ground state of the target nucleus (initial state correlations ISC) observable in experiments on quasielastic $A(e,e'p)$ scattering at large missing momentum $p_{m}$? Will the missing momentum spectrum observed at CEBAF be overwhelmed by final state interactions (FSI) of the struck proton? The recent advances in the theory of FSI and findings of complex interplay and strong quantum-mechanical interference of FSI and ISC contributions to scattering at $p_{m}\gsim 1$\,fm$^{-1}$ are reviewed. We conclude that for $p_m \gsim 1$ \, fm$^{-1}$ quasielastic scattering is dominated by FSI effects and the sensitivity to details of the nuclear ground state is lost.

Exploratory study of shrinkage of the diffraction cone for the generalized BFKL pomeron

In color dipole gBFKL dynamics, we describe the emerging gBFKL phenomenology of a subasymptotic energy dependence of the diffraction slope and discuss possibilities of testing the gBFKL predictions in exclusive photo- and electroproduction of vector mesons $V$ at HERA. A substantial shrinkage of the diffraction cone $γ^{*}p\rightarrow Vp$ processes from the CERN/FNAL to HERA range of energy $W$ is predicted. This subasymptotic shrinkage is faster than expected from the small slope of pomeron's Regge trajectory $α_{\Pom}'$. We point out that the diffraction slope is a scaling function of $(m_{V}^{2}+Q^{2})$, what relates production of different vector mesons.

The Strange Quark Distribution

We discuss the latest CCFR determination of the strange sea density of the proton. We comment on the differences with a previous, leading--order, result and point out the relevance of quark mass effects and current non--conservation effects. By taking them into account it is possible to solve the residual discrepancy with another determination of the strange quark distribution. Two important sources of uncertainties are also analyzed.

The longitudinal asymmetry of the $(e,e'p)$ missing momentum distribution as a signal of color transparency

We use multiple scattering theory to evaluate the $Q^{2}$ dependence of the forward-backward asymmetry, $A_{z}$, of the missing momentum distribution in quasielstic $A(e,e'p)$ scattering, which is expected to be affected by color transparency. The novel features of our analysis are a consistent treatment of the structure of the ejectile state formed after absorption of the virtual photon by the struck proton and a careful evaluation of the background asymmetry induced by the nonvanishing real part of the proton-nucleon scattering amplitude. We find that the absolute magnitude of $A_{z}$ is dominated by this background at the $Q^{2}$'s attainable at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility. However, the $Q^{2}$ dependence of the asymmetry is sensitive to the onset of color transparency, whose observation in high statistics experiments appears to be feasible, particularly using light targets such as $^{12}C$ or $^{16}O$.

On the determination of double diffraction dissociation cross section at HERA

The excitation of the proton into undetected multiparticle states (double diffraction dissociation) is an important background to single diffractive deep-inelastic processes $ep \rightarrow e'p'ρ^{0}, ~e'p'J/Ψ, ~e'p'X$ at HERA. We present estimates of the admixture of the double diffraction dissociation events in all diffractive events. We find that in the $J/Ψ$ photoproduction, electroproduction of the $ρ^0$ at large $Q^2$ and diffraction dissociation of real and virtual photons into high mass states $X$ the contamination of the double diffraction dissociation can be as large as $\sim 30\%$, thus affecting substantially the experimental tests of the pomeron exchange in deep inelastic scattering at HERA. We discuss a possibility of tagging the double diffraction dissociation by neutrons observed in the forward neutron calorimeter. We present evaluations of the spectra of neutrons and efficiency of neutron tagging based on the experimental data for diffractive processes in the proton-proton collisions.

Glauber theory of final-state interactions in $(e,e'p)$ scattering

We develop the Glauber theory description of final-state interaction (FSI) in quasielastic $A(e,e'p)$ scattering. The important new effect is an interaction between the two trajectories which enter the calculation of FSI-distorted one-body density matrix and are connected with incoherent elastic rescatterings of the struck proton on spectator nucleons. We demonstrate that FSI distortions of the missing momentum distribution are large over the whole range of missing momenta. Important finding is that incoherent elastic rescatterings of the ejected proton lead to a strong quantum mechanical distortions of both the longitudinal and transverse missing momentum distributions. It is shown that allowance for finite longitudinal size of the interaction region for proton-nucleon collision neglected in the standard Glauber model drastically affects the theoretical predictions at high longitudinal missing momentum. We also find very large corrections to the missing momentum distribution calculated within the local-density approximation.

Quadrupole deformation of deuterons and final state interaction in $^2 \vec H (e,e'p)$ scattering on tensor polarized deuterons at CEBAF energies

The strength of final state interaction (FSI) between struck proton and spectator neutron in $^2\vec{H}(e,e'p)$ scattering depends on the alignment of the deuteron. We study the resulting FSI effects in the tensor analyzing power in detail and find substantial FSI effects starting at still low missing momentum $p_m \gsim 0.9 fm^{-1}$. At larger $p_m \gsim 1.5 fm^{-1}$, FSI completely dominates both missing momentum distribution and tensor analyzing power. We find that to a large extent FSI masks the sensitivity of the tensor analyzing power to models of the deuteron wave function. For the transversely polarized deuterons the FSI induced forward-backward asymmetry of the missing momentum distribution is shown to have a node at precisely the same value of $p_m$ as the PWIA missing momentum distribution. The position of this node is not affected by FSI and can be a tool to distinguish experimentally between different models for the deuteron wave function.

Quantum coherence in heavy-flavor production on nuclei

We describe a light-cone wave function formalism for hadroproduction of heavy-flavors via gluon-gluon fusion. The developed approach is well suited to address coherence effects in heavy-quark production on nuclei at small $x_{2} \lsim 0.1\cdot A^{-1/3}$. Nuclear attenuation in hadroproduction of heavy-flavors is found to be similar to shadowing effects for heavy-flavor structure functions in deep-inelastic scattering from nuclei. Nevertheless, remaining differences in the theoretical formulation of both processes imply corrections to factorization theorems.

The direct calculation of the slope of the QCD pomeron's trajectory

We demonstrate that the diffraction slope of the generalized BFKL pomeron amplitude has the conventional Regge growth $B(s) = B(0) + 2α_{\Pom}'\log(s)$. This proves that the generalized BFKL pomeron is described by the moving $j$-plane singularity. We give an estimate for the slope $α_{\Pom}'$ in terms of the correlation radius for the perturbative gluons.

The apparent Coulomb reacceleration of neutrons in electrodissociation of the deuteron

We demonstrate that the final state $p$-$n$ interaction in the reaction of electrodissociation of the deuteron at large $Q^{2}$ in a static external field leads to the apparent reacceleration of neutrons. The shift of the neutron velocity from the velocity of the deuteron beam is related to the quantum-mechanical forward-backward asymmetry of the missing momentum distribution in the $^2H(e,e'p)n$ scattering.
