Breathers in solitonic room-temperature superlattice-induced superfluorescence in quasi-2D perovskites

Recently, a soliton mechanism for room-temperature superfluorescence in thin perovskite films has been proposed, with a fundamental soliton predicted to remain stable under LO phonon--exciton interactions. At the same time, superlattice architectures offer a route to enhancing superfluorescence in perovskites. Motivated by recent observations of room-temperature superfluorescence in periodic superlattices of quasi-2D metal-halide perovskites, we extend the 2D nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation describing Wannier exciton--LO phonon interactions to superlattice structures, obtaining a 3D nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We show that interlayer tunnelling gives rise to breather dynamics corresponding to a stable fundamental soliton in mixed coordinate--momentum space, with the coordinate parallel to the layers and the momentum perpendicular to them. The breather dynamics originate from miniband formation, which induces a momentum-dependent phase modulation of the soliton. In the absence of interlayer tunnelling, the breather dynamics disappear and the soliton becomes stationary. These results establish a direct connection between interlayer tunnelling, miniband formation and soliton dynamics, suggesting that breather behavior can provide a signature of interlayer tunnelling in quasi-2D perovskite superlattices.

Stability of the Quantum Coherent Superradiant States in Relation to Exciton-Phonon Interactions and the Fundamental Soliton in Hybrid Perovskites

The use of macroscopic coherent quantum states at room temperature is crucial in modern quantum technologies. In light of recent experiments demonstrating high-temperature superfluorescence in hybrid perovskite thin films, in this work we investigate the stability of the superradiant state concerning exciton-phonon interactions, taking into account the specifics of perovskites. We focused on quasi-2D Wannier excitons interacting with longitudinal optical (LO) phonons in polar crystals, as well as with acoustic phonons. Our study leads to the derivation of nonlinear equations in the coordinate space that govern the exciton wavefunction's coefficient in the single-exciton basis for the lowest exciton state, which translates to the complex-valued polarization. The resulting equations take the form of a 2D nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. We perform a linear stability analysis of the plane wave solutions for the equations in question, which allows us to establish stability criteria. This analysis is particularly important for evaluating the stability of the superradiant state in the considered quasi-2D structures, as the superradiant state represents a specific case of the plane wave solution. In scenarios involving the weakly nonlocal NLS equation, we find that it transitions into a purely nonlocal form. Furthermore, interactions between the exciton and acoustic phonons reduce the intensity of modulationally stable waves compared to the case without such interactions. Our analytical results are corroborated by numerical calculations. We also numerically solve the 2D nonlocal NLS equation in the polar coordinates and obtain its fundamental soliton solution, which is stable.

Evolution of a twisted electron wave packet perturbed by an inhomogeneous electric field

Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) wave packets, known for their vortex structure and nonzero orbital angular momentum (OAM), are of great interest in various scientific fields. Here we study the nonrelativistic dynamics of a spatially-localized electron LG wave packet interacting with an inhomogeneous external electric field that violates the axial symmetry of the initial wave function. We focus on the analysis of the electron density and demonstrate how it is affected by the external field. Within the first order of perturbation theory, we calculate the electron wave function and reveal that the electric field may significantly alter the wave packet's structure and distort its qualitative form. We demonstrate that due to the interaction with the external field, the degenerate zeros of the initial wave function located on the $z$ axis split into multiple nondegenerate nodes in the transverse plane representing separate single-charge vortices. This mechanism resembles the analogous effects known in topological optics. These findings provide new insights into controlling and manipulating twisted matter beams and into their possible instabilities.

Vacuum pair production in zeptosecond pulses: Peculiar momentum spectra and striking particle acceleration by bipolar pulses

We examine the phenomenon of electron-positron pair production from vacuum in a combination of two counterpropagating electromagnetic pulses having a duration of the order of the Compton time. We show that in this extreme short-time domain, the momentum distributions of the particles produced possess a peculiar structure which strongly depends on whether the electromagnetic pulses have a unipolar or bipolar profile. It is shown that bipolar pulses can predominantly generate particles with ultrarelativistic velocities along the propagation direction of the pulses, while unipolar ones are generally more favorable in terms of the total particle yield in the same regime. The highly nontrivial properties of the $e^+e^-$ spectra revealed in our study provide strong experimental signatures paving the way to probe a complex vacuum response within the short-time domain of quantum electrodynamics.

Scattering of a twisted electron wavepacket by a finite laser pulse

The behavior of a twisted electron colliding with a linearly polarized laser pulse is investigated within relativistic quantum mechanics. In order to better fit the real experimental conditions, we introduce a Gaussian spatial profile for the initial electron state as well as an envelope function for the laser pulse, so the both interacting objects have a finite size along the laser propagation direction. For this setup we analyze the dynamics of various observable quantities regarding the electron state: the probability density, angular momentum, and mean values of the spatial coordinates. It is shown that the motion of a twisted wavepacket can be accurately described by averaging over classical trajectories with various directions of the transverse momentum component. On the other hand, full quantum simulations demonstrate that the ring structure of the wavepacket in the transverse plane can be significantly distorted leading to large uncertainties in the total angular momentum of the electron. This effect remains after the interaction once the laser pulse has a nonzero electric-field area.

Relativistic electron spin dynamics in a strong unipolar laser field

The behavior of an electron spin interacting with a linearly polarized laser field is analyzed. In contrast to previous considerations of the problem, the initial state of the electron represents a localized wave packet, and a spatial envelope is introduced for the laser pulse, which allows one to take into account the finite size of both objects. Special attention is paid to ultrashort pulses possessing a high degree of unipolarity. Within a classical treatment (both nonrelativistic and relativistic), proportionality between the change of the electron spin projections and the electric field area of the pulse is clearly demonstrated. We also perform calculations of the electron spin dynamics according to the Dirac equation. Evolving the electron wave function in time, we compute the mean values of the spin operator in various forms. It is shown that the classical relativistic predictions are accurately reproduced when using the Foldy-Wouthuysen operator. The same results are obtained when using the Lorentz transformation and the nonrelativistic (Pauli) spin operator in the particle's rest frame.

Electromagnetic Solitons in Quantum Vacuum

In the limit of extremely intense electromagnetic fields the Maxwell equations are modified due to the photon-photon scattering that makes the vacuum refraction index depend on the field amplitude. In presence of electromagnetic waves with small but finite wavenumbers the vacuum behaves as a dispersive medium. We show that the interplay between the vacuum polarization and the nonlinear effects in the interaction of counter-propagating electromagnetic waves can result in the formation of Kadomtsev-Petviashvily solitons and, in one-dimension configuration, of Korteveg-de-Vries type solitons that can propagate over a large distance without changing their shape.

Quantum theory of a laser soliton

The Heisenberg-Langevin equation for a spatial laser soliton in a wide-aperture laser with saturable absorption is constructed within the framework of consistent quantum electrodynamics. We discuss in detail the canonical variables for the generation field and the material two-level medium, consisting of centres providing amplification and absorption. It is assumed that laser generation evolves in time much more slowly than an atomic media. This assumption makes it possible to apply the adiabatic approximation and construct a closed equation for the amplitude of a laser field. Much attention is paid to the formulation of Langevin sources when deriving the equation since they play a decisive role in the formation of solitons' quantum statistical features. To provide an appropriate procedure for observing the quantum squeezing of a soliton, synchronization of laser generation by an external weak electromagnetic field is considered. Here we also present the results of the analysis of a classical laser soliton (neglecting the quantum fluctuations), which serves as the basis for further consideration of quantum effects.

Coherently controlled generation of single-cycle terahertz pulses from thin layer of nonlinear medium with low-frequency resonances

We propose a novel scheme to generate single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses via reflection of an optical femtosecond pulse train from a thin layer of nonlinear resonant medium. Our method is based on a coherent control of low-frequency oscillations and free induction decay in the medium. The specific single-cycle shape of generated THz pulses requires a plane wavefront and detection in the near field. Our theoretical results pave the way to a new, simple and high-efficiency way to generate single-cycle waveshape-tunable terahertz pulses.

Self-induced transparency mode-locking in a Ti:sapphire laser with an intracavity rubidium cell

In a Ti:Sa laser with an absorbing with Rb vapor cell stable self-starting passive mode-locking is demonstrated. We show that the mode-locking appears due to self-induced transparency (SIT) in the Rb cell, that is, the pulse in the Rb cell is a 2pi SIT pulse. For the best of our knowledge, in these experiments we present the first time demonstration of SIT mode-locking in laser systems, which was discussed only theoretical before.

Effect of saturated absorption on sub-Poissonian lasing

This paper discusses the effect of saturated absorption on the quantum features of a sub-Poissonian laser. It is shown that when both media (laser and absorbing) are saturated, the appearance of an additional element in the cavity does not lead to the demolition of the quantum properties (regular statistics of photons and quadrature squeezing) of laser radiation.

Dynamics of nonlinear-Schroedinger breathers in a potential trap

We consider the evolution of the 2-soliton (breather) of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation on a semi-infinite line with the zero boundary condition and a linear potential, which corresponds to the gravity field in the presence of a hard floor. This setting can be implemented in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates, and in a nonlinear planar waveguide in optics. In the absence of the gravity, repulsion of the breather from the floor leads to its splitting into constituent fundamental solitons, if the initial distance from the floor is smaller than a critical value; otherwise, the moving breather persists. In the presence of the gravity, the breather always splits into a pair of "co-hopping" fundamental solitons, which may be frequency-locked in the form of a quasi-breather, or unlocked, forming an incoherent pseudo-breather. Some essential results are obtained in an analytical form, in addition to the systematic numerical investigation.

Generation of unipolar half-cycle pulse via unusual reflection of a single-cycle pulse from an optically thin metallic or dielectric layer

We present a significantly different reflection process from an optically thin flat metallic or dielectric layer and propose a strikingly simple method to form approximately unipolar half-cycle optical pulses via reflection of a single-cycle optical pulse. Unipolar pulses in reflection arise due to specifics of effectively one-dimensional pulse propagation. Namely, we show that in considered system the field emitted by a flat medium layer is proportional to the velocity of oscillating medium charges instead of their acceleration as it is usually the case. When the single-cycle pulse interacts with linear optical medium, the oscillation velocity of medium charges can be then forced to keep constant sign throughout the pulse duration. Our results essentially differ from the direct mirror reflection and suggest a possibility of unusual transformations of the few-cycle light pulses in linear optical systems.

All-optical control of unipolar pulse generation in a resonant medium with nonlinear field coupling

We study optical response of a resonant medium possessing nonlinear coupling to external field driven by a few-cycle pump pulse sequence. We demonstrate the possibility to directly produce unipolar half-cycle pulses from the medium possessing an arbitrary nonlinearity, by choosing the proper pulse-to-pulse distance of the pump pulses in the sequence. We examine the various ways of the shaping of the medium response using different geometrical configurations of nonlinear oscillators and different wavefront shapes for the excitation pulse sequence. Our approach defines a general framework to produce unipolar pulses of controllable form.

Generation of unipolar pulses in a circular Raman-active medium excited by few-cycle optical pulses

We study theoretically a new possibility of unipolar pulses generation in Raman-active medium excited by a series of few-cycle optical pulses. We consider the case when the Raman-active particles are uniformly distributed along the circle, and demonstrate a possibility to obtain a unipolar rectangular video pulses with an arbitrarily long duration, ranging from a minimum value equal to the natural period of the low frequency vibrations in the Raman-active medium.

Dissipative soliton protocols in semiconductor microcavities at finite temperatures

We consider exciton polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity with a saturable absorber in the growth direction of the heterostructure. This feature promotes additional nonlinear losses of the system with the emergence of bistability of the condensate particles number on the nonresonant (electrical or optical) excitation intensity. Further we demonstrate a new type of bright spatial dissipative exciton-polariton soliton which emerges in the equilibrium between the regions with different particle density. We develop protocols of soliton creation and destruction. The switch to a soliton-like behavior occurs if the cavity is exposed by a short strong laser pulse with certain energy and duration. We estimate the characteristic times of soliton switch on and off and the time of return to the initial cycle. In particular, we demonstrate surprising narrowing of the spatial profile of the soliton and its vanishing at certain temperature due to interaction of the system with the thermal bath of acoustic phonons. We also address the role of polariton-polariton interaction (Kerr-like nonlinearity) on formation of dissipative solitons and show that the soliton may exist both in its presence and absence.

Hysteresis assisted narrowband resonances in a chain of nonlinear plasmonic arrays

The plasmonic structures exhibiting narrowband resonances (NBR) are of a great interest for various applications. We propose to use hysteresis behavior in a 1D system of nonlinear nanoresonators in order to achieve the NRB; the nonlinearity is provided by saturation of a two-level quantum system coupled with the nanoresonators (nanolaser/spaser configuration). Quantum Dots (QD) were assumed as quantum systems; their numerical parameters have been adopted for estimations. Role of the loss compensation on the quality of the NBR is shown for below (under compensation) and above threshold (generating spasers) operation modes. Amplitude and phase detection schemes of the prospective experimental realization are compared using the developed model. Possible sensor oriented applications of the proposed system are discussed.

Simulation of Interaction of Oriented J Aggregates with Resonance Laser Radiation

The interaction of laser radiation with single J aggregates of cyanine dyes is theoretically analyzed and numerically simulated. The quantum mechanical calculations of the equilibrium geometry and the energies and intensities of the lowest singlet electronic transitions in pseudoisocyanine chloride and its linear (chain) oligomers are fulfilled. The data of these calculations can serve as parameters of the analyzed model of interaction of J aggregates with radiation in the oneparticle density matrix approximation. This model takes into account relaxation processes, the annihilation of excitations at neighboring molecules, and inho mogeneous broadening. Assuming that the inhomogeneous broadening is absent, calculations demonstrate the existence of spatial bistability, molecular switching waves, and dissipative solitons. The effect of the inhomogeneous broadening and the radiation intensity on the effective coherence length in linear (chain) J aggregates is analyzed
