Non-local composite spin-lattice polarons in high temperature superconductors

The non-local nature of the polaron formation in t-t'-t"-J model is studied in large lattices up to 64 sites by developing a new numerical method. We show that the effect of longer-range hoppings t' and t" is a large anisotropy of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) leading to a completely different influence of EPI on the nodal and antinodal points in agreement with the experiments. Furthermore, nonlocal EPI preserves polaron's quantum motion, which destroys the antiferromagnetic order effectively, even at strong coupling regime, although the quasi-particle weight in angle-resolved-photoemission spectroscopy is strongly suppressed.

Temperature dependence of the angle resolved photoemission spectra in the undoped cuprates: self-consistent approach to the t-J-Holstein model

We develop a novel self-consistent approach for studying the angle resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) of a hole in the t-J-Holstein model giving perfect agreement with numerically exact Diagrammatic Monte Carlo data at zero temperature for all regimes of electron-phonon coupling. Generalizing the approach to finite temperatures we find that the anomalous temperature dependence of the ARPES in undoped cuprates is explained by cooperative interplay of coupling of the hole to magnetic fluctuations and strong electron-phonon interaction.

Two-Staged Magnetoresistance Driven by Ising-like Spin Sublattice in SrCo6O11

A two-staged, uniaxial magnetoresistive effect has been discovered in SrCo6O11 having a layered hexagonal structure. Conduction electrons and localized Ising spins are in different sublattices but their interpenetration makes the conduction electrons sensitively pick up the stepwise field-dependence of magnetization. The stepwise field-dependence suggests two competitive interlayer interactions between ferromagnetic Ising-spin layers, i.e., a ferromagnetic nearest-layer interaction and an antiferromagnetic next-nearest-layer interaction. This oxide offers a unique opportunity to study nontrivial interplay between conduction electrons and Ising spins, the coupling of which can be finely controlled by a magnetic field of a few Tesla.

Spectroscopic Properties of Polarons in Strongly Correlated Systems by Exact Diagrammatic Monte Carlo Method

We present recent advances in understanding of the ground and excited states of the electron-phonon coupled systems obtained by novel methods of Diagrammatic Monte Carlo and Stochastic Optimization, which enable the approximation-free calculation of Matsubara Green function in imaginary times and perform unbiased analytic continuation to real frequencies. We present exact numeric results on the ground state properties, Lehmann spectral function and optical conductivity of different strongly correlated systems: Frohlich polaron, Rashba-Pekar exciton-polaron, pseudo Jahn-Teller polaron, exciton, and interacting with phonons hole in the t-J model.

The hierarchy of multiple many-body interaction scales in high-temperature superconductors

To date, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy has been successful in identifying energy scales of the many-body interactions in correlated materials, focused on binding energies of up to a few hundred meV below the Fermi energy. Here, at higher energy scale, we present improved experimental data from four families of high-Tc superconductors over a wide doping range that reveal a hierarchy of many-body interaction scales focused on: the low energy anomaly ("kink") of 0.03-0.09eV, a high energy anomaly of 0.3-0.5eV, and an anomalous enhancement of the width of the LDA-based CuO2 band extending to energies of ~ 2 eV. Besides their universal behavior over the families, we find that all of these three dispersion anomalies also show clear doping dependence over the doping range presented.

Gauge covariant formulation of Wigner representation through deformational quantization --Application to Keldysh formalism with electromagnetic field--

We developed a gauge-covariant formulation of the non-equilibrium Green function method for the dynamical and/or non-uniform electromagnetic field by means of the deformational quantization method. Such a formulation is realized by replacing the Moyal product in the so-called Wigner space by the star product, and facilitates the order-by-order calculation of a gauge-invariant observable in terms of the electromagnetic field. An application of this formalism to the linear response theory is discussed.

Universal Scaling Behavior of Anomalous Hall Effect and Anomalous Nernst Effect in Itinerant Ferromagnets

Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in a variety of ferromagnetic metals including pure metals, oxides, and chalcogenides, are studied to obtain unified understandings of their origins. We show a universal scaling behavior of anomalous Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ as a function of longitudinal conductivity $σ_{xx}$ over five orders of magnitude, which is well explained by a recent theory of the AHE taking into account both the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions. ANE is closely related with AHE and provides us with further information about the low-temperature electronic state of itinerant ferromagnets. Temperature dependence of transverse Peltier coefficient $α_{xy}$ shows an almost similar behavior among various ferromagnets, and this behavior is in good agreement quantitatively with that expected from the Mott rule.

Calculation of overdamped c-axis charge dynamics and the coupling to polar phonons in cuprate superconductors

In our recent paper we presented empirical evidences suggesting that electrons in cuprate superconductors are strongly coupled to unscreened c-axis polar phonons. In the overdoped regime the c-axis metallizes and we present here simple theoretical arguments demonstrating that the observed effect of the metallic c-axis screening on the polar electron-phonon coupling is consistent with a strongly overdamped c-axis charge dynamics in the optimally doped system, becoming less dissipative in the overdoped regime.

In-plane anisotropy of the electronic structure for the charge/orbital-ordered state in half-doped manganite with layered structure

We report on the in-plane anisotropy of the electronic response in the spin/charge/orbital ordered phase of a half-doped layered-structure manganite. The optical conductivity spectra for a single domain of Eu$_{1/2}$% Ca$_{3/2}$MnO$_{4}$ unambiguously show the anisotropic charge dynamics which well corresponds to the theoretical calculation: the optical conductivity with the polarization along the zigzag ferromagnetic chain direction exhibits a smaller gap and a larger intensity at lower energies than that of the perpendicular polarization mostly due to the charge/orbital ordering and the associated quantum interference effect.

Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy on Electronic Structure and Electron-Phonon Coupling in Cuprate Superconductors

This treatise reviews latest results obtained from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on cuprate superconductors, with a special focus on the electron-phonon interaction. What has emerged is rich information about the anomalous electron-phonon interaction well beyond the traditional views of the subject. It exhibits strong doping, momentum and phonon symmetry dependence, and shows complex interplay with the strong electron-electron interaction in these materials.

Numerical study of the isotope effect in underdoped high-temperature superconductors: Calculation of the angle-resolved photoemission spectra

We present a numerical study of the isotope effect on the angle resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) in the undoped cuprates. By the systematic-error-free Diagrammatic Monte Carlo method, the Lehman spectral function of a single hole in the tt't''-J model in the regime of intermediate and strong couplings to optical phonons is calculated for normal and isotope substituted systems. We found that the isotope effect is strongly energy-momentum dependent, and is anomalously enhanced in the intermediate coupling regime while it approaches to that of the localized hole model in the strong coupling regime. We predict the strengths of effect as well as the fine details of the ARPES lineshape change. Implications to the doped case are also discussed.

Doping dependence of the coupling of electrons to bosonic modes in the single-layer high-temperature Bi2Sr2CuO6 superconductor

A recent highlight in the study of high-Tc superconductors is the observation of band renormalization / self-energy effects on the quasiparticles. This is seen in the form of kinks in the quasiparticle dispersions as measured by photoemission and interpreted as signatures of collective bosonic modes coupling to the electrons. Here we compare for the first time the self-energies in an optimally doped and strongly overdoped, non-superconducting single-layer Bi-cuprate (Bi2Sr2CuO6). Besides the appearance of a strong overall weakening, we also find that weight of the self-energy in the overdoped system shifts to higher energies. We present evidence that this is related to a change in the coupling to c-axis phonons due to the rapid change of the c-axis screening in this doping range.

Nodal quasiparticle in pseudogapped colossal magnetoresistive manganites

A characteristic feature of the copper oxide high-temperature superconductors is the dichotomy between the electronic excitations along the nodal (diagonal) and antinodal (parallel to the Cu-O bonds) directions in momentum space, generally assumed to be linked to the "d-wave" symmetry of the superconducting state. Angle-resolved photoemission measurements in the superconducting state have revealed a quasiparticle spectrum with a d-wave gap structure that exhibits a maximum along the antinodal direction and vanishes along the nodal direction. Subsequent measurements have shown that, at low doping levels, this gap structure persists even in the high-temperature metallic state, although the nodal points of the superconducting state spread out in finite "Fermi arcs". This is the so-called pseudogap phase, and it has been assumed that it is closely linked to the superconducting state, either by assigning it to fluctuating superconductivity or by invoking orders which are natural competitors of d-wave superconductors. Here we report experimental evidence that a very similar pseudogap state with a nodal-antinodal dichotomous character exists in a system that is markedly different from a superconductor: the ferromagnetic metallic groundstate of the colossal magnetoresistive bilayer manganite La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7. Our findings therefore cast doubt on the assumption that the pseudogap state in the copper oxides and the nodal-antinodal dichotomy are hallmarks of the superconductivity state.

Magneto-optics induced by the spin chirality in itinerant ferromagnet Nd$_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$

It is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally that the spin chirality associated with a noncoplanar spin configuration produces a magneto-optical effect. Numerical study of the two-band Hubbard model on a triangle cluster shows that the optical Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}(ω)$ is proportional to the spin chirality. The detailed comparative experiments on pyrochlore-type molybdates $R_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ with $R=$Nd (Ising-like moments) and $R=$Gd (Heisenberg-like ones) clearly distinguishes the two mechanisms, i.e., spin chirality and spin-orbit interactions. It is concluded that for $R$=Nd, $σ_{xy}(ω)$ is dominated by the spin chirality for the dc ($ω=0$) and the $d \to d$ incoherent intraband optical transitions between Mo atoms.

Anisotropic Electron-Phonon Coupling Uncovered By Angle-Resolved Photoemission

Recently there has been an accumulation of experimental evidence in the high temperature superconductors suggesting the relevance of electron-phonon coupling in these materials. These findings challenge some well-held beliefs of what electron-phonon interactions can and cannot do. In this article we review evidence primarily from angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements which point out the importance of electronic coupling to certain phonon modes in the cuprates.

Anisotropic electron-phonon interaction in the cuprates

We explore manifestations of electron-phonon coupling on the electron spectral function for two phonon modes in the cuprates exhibiting strong renormalizations with temperature and doping. Applying simple symmetry considerations and kinematic constraints, we find that the out-of-plane, out-of-phase O buckling mode (B_1g) involves small momentum transfers and couples strongly to electronic states near the anti-node while the in-plane Cu-O breathing modes involve large momentum transfers and couples strongly to nodal electronic states. Band renormalization effects are found to be strongest in the superconducting state near the anti-node, in full agreement with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data.

Coupling Of The B1g Phonon To The Anti-Nodal Electronic States of Bi2Sr2Ca0.92Y0.08Cu2O(8+delta)

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on optimally doped Bi2Sr2Ca0.92Y0.08Cu2O(8+delta) uncovers a coupling of the electronic bands to a 40 meV mode in an extended k-space region away from the nodal direction, leading to a new interpretation of the strong renormalization of the electronic structure seen in Bi2212. Phenomenological agreements with neutron and Raman experiments suggest that this mode is the B1g oxygen bond-buckling phonon. A theoretical calculation based on this assignment reproduces the electronic renormalization seen in the data.

Scaling of the anomalous Hall effect in Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$RuO$_3$

The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of ferromagnetic thin films of Sr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$RuO$_3$ (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.4) is studied as a function of $x$ and temperature $T$. As $x$ increases, both the transition temperature $T_c$ and the magnetization $M$ are reduced and vanish near $x \sim$ 0.7. For all compositions, the transverse resistivity $ρ_{H}$ varies non-monotonously with $T$, and even changes sign, thus violating the conventional expression $ρ_{H}=R_o B + 4πR_s M(T)$ ($B$ is the magnetic induction, while $R_o$ and $R_s$ are the ordinary and anomalous Hall coefficients). From the rather complicated data of $ρ_H$, we find a scaling behavior of the transverse conductivity $σ_{xy}$ with $M(T)$, which is well reproduced by the first-principles band calculation assuming the intrinsic origin of the AHE.
