Gravitational Model of High Energy Particles in a Collimated Jet

Observations suggest that relativistic particles play a fundamental role in the dynamics of jets emerging from active galactic nuclei as well as in their interaction with the intracluster medium. However, no general consensus exists concerning the acceleration mechanism of those high energy particles. A gravitational acceleration mechanism is here proposed, in which particles leaving precise regions within the ergosphere of a rotating supermassive black hole produce a highly collimated flow. These particles follow unbound geodesics which are asymptotically parallel to the spin axis of the black hole and are characterized by the energy $E$, the Carter constant ${\cal Q}$ and zero angular momentum of the component $L_z$. If environmental effects are neglected, the present model predicts at distances of about 140 kpc from the ergosphere the presence of electrons with energies around 9.4 GeV. The present mechanism can also accelerate protons up to the highest energies observed in cosmic rays by the present experiments.

Dynamical instability and the expansion-free condition

We study the dynamical instability of a spherically symmetric anisotropic fluid which collapses adiabatically under the condition of vanishing expansion scalar. The Newtonian and post Newtonian regimes are considered in detail. It is shown that within those two approximations the adiabatic index $Γ_1$, measuring the fluid stiffness, does not play any role. Instead, the range of instability is determined by the anisotropy of the fluid pressures and the radial profile of the energy density, independently of its stiffness, in a way which is fully consistent with results previously obtained from the study on the Tolman mass.

Expansion-Free Cavity Evolution: Some exact Analytical Models

We consider spherically symmetric distributions of anisotropic fluids with a central vacuum cavity, evolving under the condition of vanishing expansion scalar. Some analytical solutions are found satisfying Darmois junction conditions on both delimiting boundary surfaces, while some others require the presence of thin shells on either (or both) boundary surfaces. The solutions here obtained model the evolution of the vacuum cavity and the surrounding fluid distribution, emerging after a central explosion. This study complements a previously published work where modeling of the evolution of such kind of systems was achieved through a different kinematical condition.

Model of collimated jets with high energy particles

The increasing data set of precise observations of very energetic and collimated jets, with black hole (BH) as putative central engine, at different astrophysical scales and in various environments, should soon permit to discriminate and classify current theoretical models able to describe the jets formation. We construct a purely gravitational theoretical model of perfectly collimated jets of high energy particles in the ideal case where the central engine is a Kerr BH of mass $M$ and angular momentum by unit of mass $a$. We study in Weyl coordinates ($ρ$, $z$) the unbound Kerr 2D-geodesics which are asymptotes to straight lines parallel to the $z$ axis of equations ρ=constant= ρ_{1}= [(a/M)^2+Q/(E^2-1)]^{1/2} of which existence was recently demonstrated (Gariel et al.,A & A, 2010). On these geodesics, flow test particles of energy $E$, with a Carter constant $Q$ and (necessarily) an angular momentum $L_{z}=0$. Studying the characteristics of the geodesics equations system, in the special case of a double root, we exhibit jets with a radial structure, whose energy flux can be calculated. From the observed data of the jet powers, we obtain the mean particles density, the particles flow, the speed and the Lorentz factor of the jets, for any charged or neutral test particle. Then, we numerically apply these results to electrons. We also discuss the domains of initial conditions for geodesics starting inside the ergosphere. All these results come from the Kerr spacetime structure, and enhance the Penrose process as a plausible origin for the high energy jets.

Bounded excursion stable gravastars and black holes

Dynamical models of prototype gravastars were constructed in order to study their stability. The models are the Visser-Wiltshire three-layer gravastars, in which an infinitely thin spherical shell of stiff fluid divides the whole spacetime into two regions, where the internal region is de Sitter, and the external is Schwarzschild. It is found that in some cases the models represent the "bounded excursion" stable gravastars, in which the thin shell is oscillating between two finite radii, while in other cases they collapse until the formation of black holes. In the phase space, the region for the ``bounded excursion" gravastars is very small in comparison to that of black holes, but not empty. Therefore, although the existence of gravastars cannot be excluded from such dynamical models, our results do indicate that, even if gravastars indeed exist, they do not exclude the existence of black holes.

The hierarchy problem, radion mass, localization of gravity and 4D effective Newtonian potential in string theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$

We present a systematical study of brane worlds in string theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$. Starting with the toroidal compactification of the NS/NS sector in (D+d) dimensions, we first obtain an effective $D$-dimensional action, and then compactify one of the $(D-1)$ spatial dimensions by introducing two orbifold branes as its boundaries. By combining the Gauss-Codacci and Lanczos equations, we write down explicitly the general gravitational field equations on each of the two branes, while using distribution theory we express the matter field equations on the branes in terms of the discontinuities of the first derivatives of the matter fields. Afterwards, we address three important issues: (i) the hierarchy problem; (ii) the radion mass; and (iii) the localization of gravity, the 4-dimensional Newtonian effective potential and the Yukawa corrections due to the gravitational high-order Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes. With a very conservative estimation, we find that the radion mass is of the order of $10^{-2} GeV$. The gravity is localized on the visible brane, and the spectrum of the gravitational KK modes is discrete and can be of the order of TeV. The corrections to the 4-dimensional Newtonian potential from the higher order of gravitational KK modes are exponentially suppressed and can be safely neglected in current experiments. In an appendix, we also present a systematical and pedagogical study of the Gauss-Codacci equations and Israel's junction conditions across a (D-1)-dimensional hypersurface, which can be either spacelike or timelike.

Cavity evolution in relativistic self-gravitating fluids

We consider the evolution of cavities within spherically symmetric relativistic fluids, under the assumption that proper radial distance between neighboring fluid elements remains constant during their evolution (purely areal evolution condition). The general formalism is deployed and solutions are presented. Some of them satisfy Darmois conditions whereas others present shells and must satisfy Israel conditions, on either one or both boundary surfaces. Prospective applications of these results to some astrophysical scenarios is suggested.

Collapsing Spheres Satisfying An "Euclidean Condition"

We study the general properties of fluid spheres satisfying the heuristic assumption that their areas and proper radius are equal (the Euclidean condition). Dissipative and non-dissipative models are considered. In the latter case, all models are necessarily geodesic and a subclass of the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi solution is obtained. In the dissipative case solutions are non-geodesic and are characterized by the fact that all non-gravitational forces acting on any fluid element produces a radial three-acceleration independent on its inertial mass.

A rotating cylinder in an asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter background

A family of exact solutions is presented which represents a rigidly rotating cylinder of dust in a background with a negative cosmological constant. The interior of the infinite cylinder is described by the Godel solution. An exact solution for the exterior solution is found which depends both on the rotation of the interior and on its radius. For values of these parameters less than a certain limit, the exterior solution is shown to be locally isomorphic to the Linet-Tian solution. For values larger than another limit, it is shown that the exterior solution extends into a region which contains closed timelike curves. At large distances from the source, the space-time is shown to be asymptotic locally to anti-de Sitter space.

Kerr Geodesics, the Penrose Process and Jet Collimation by a Black Hole

We re-examine the possibility that astrophysical jet collimation may arise from the geometry of rotating black holes and the presence of high-energy particles resulting from a Penrose process, without the help of magnetic fields. Our analysis uses the Weyl coordinates, which are revealed better adapted to the desired shape of the jets. We numerically integrate the 2D-geodesics equations. We give a detailed study of these geodesics and give several numerical examples. Among them are a set of perfectly collimated geodesics with asymptotes $ρ=ρ_{1}$ parallel to the $z-$ axis, with $ρ_{1}$ only depending on the ratios $\frac{\mathcal{Q}}{E^{2}-1}$ and $\frac{a}{M}$, where $a$ and $M$ are the parameters of the Kerr black hole, $E$ the particle energy and $\mathcal{Q}$ the Carter's constant.

Shearfree Cylindrical Gravitational Collapse

We consider diagonal cylindrically symmetric metrics, with an interior representing a general non-rotating fluid with anisotropic pressures. An exterior vacuum Einstein-Rosen spacetime is matched to this using Darmois matching conditions. We show that the matching conditions can be explicitly solved for the boundary values of metric components and their derivatives, either for the interior or exterior. Specializing to shearfree interiors, a static exterior can only be matched to a static interior, and the evolution in the non-static case is found to be given in general by an elliptic function of time. For a collapsing shearfree isotropic fluid, only a Robertson-Walker dust interior is possible, and we show that all such cases were included in Cocke's discussion. For these metrics, Nolan and Nolan have shown that the matching breaks down before collapse is complete and Tod and Mena have shown that the spacetime is not asymptotically flat in the sense of Berger et al. The issues about energy that then arise are revisited and it is shown that the exterior is not in an intrinsic gravitational or superenergy radiative state at the boundary.

Expansion-Free Evolving Spheres Must Have Inhomogeneous Energy Density Distributions

In a recent paper a systematic study on shearing expansion-free spherically symmetric distributions was presented. As a particular case of such systems, the Skripkin model was mentioned, which corresponds to a nondissipative perfect fluid with a constant energy density. Here we show that such a model is inconsistent with junction conditions. It is shown that in general for any nondissipative fluid distribution, the expansion-free condition requires the energy density to be inhomogeneous. As an example we consider the case of dust, which allows for a complete integration.

Shearing Expansion-free Spherical Anisotropic Fluid Evolution

Spherically symmetric expansionfree distributions are systematically studied. The whole set of field equations and junction conditions are presented for a general distribution of dissipative anisotropic fluid (principal stresses unequal), and the expansionfree condition is integrated. In order to understand the physical meaning of expansionfree motion, two different definitions for the radial velocity of a fluid element are discussed. It is shown that the appearance of a cavity is inevitable in the expansionfree evolution. The nondissipative case is considered in detail and the Skripkin model is recovered.

The cosmological constant in the brane world of string theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$

Orbifold branes in string theory are investigated, and the general field equations on the branes are given explicitly for type II and heterotic string. It is shown that the effective cosmological constant on each of the two branes can be easily lowered to its current observational value, using large extra dimensions. This is also true for type I string. The radion stability is studied by using the Goldberger-Wise mechanism, and shown explicitly that it is stable. Therefore, brane world of string theory provides a viable and built-in mechanism for solving the long-standing cosmological constant problem. Applying the formulas to cosmology, we obtain the generalized Friedmann equations on each of the two branes.

Late transient acceleration of the universe in string theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$

Recently, in Gong {\em et al} \cite{GWW07} and Wang and Santos \cite{WS07} it was shown that the effective cosmological constant on each of the two orbifold branes can be easily lowered to its current observational value, by using the large extra dimensions in the framework of both M-Theory and string theory on $S^{1}/Z_{2}$. In this paper, we study the current acceleration of the universe, using the formulas developed in \cite{WS07}. We first construct explicitly time-dependent solution to the 10-dimensional bulk of the Neveu-Schwarz/Neveu-Schwarz sector, compactified on a 5-dimensional torus. Then, we write down the generalized Friedmann equations on each of the two dynamical branes, and fit the models to the 182 gold supernova Ia data and the BAO parameter from SDSS, using both of our MINUIT and Monte-Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) codes. With the best fitting values of the parameters involved as initial conditions, we integrate the generalized Friedmann equations numerically and find the future evolution of the universe. We find that it depends on the choice of the radion potentials $V_{4}^{(I)} (I = 1, 2)$ of the branes. In particular, when choosing them to be the Goldberger-Wise potentials, $V_{4}^{(I)} = λ_{4}^{(I)} (ψ^{2} - {v_{I}}^{2})^{2}$, we find that the current acceleration of the universe driven by the effective cosmological constant is only temporary. Due to the effects of the potentials, the universe will be finally in its decelerating expansion phase again. We also study the proper distance between the two branes, and find that it remains almost constant during the whole future evolution of the universe in all the models considered.

Nonadiabatic charged spherical gravitational collapse

We present a complete set of the equations and matching conditions required for the description of physically meaningful charged, dissipative, spherically symmetric gravitational collapse with shear. Dissipation is described with both free-streaming and diffusion approximations. The effects of viscosity are also taken into account. The roles of different terms in the dynamical equation are analyzed in detail. The dynamical equation is coupled to a causal transport equation in the context of Israel-Stewart theory. The decrease of the inertial mass density of the fluid, by a factor which depends on its internal thermodynamic state, is reobtained, with the viscosity terms included. In accordance with the equivalence principle, the same decrease factor is obtained for the gravitational force term. The effect of the electric charge on the relation between the Weyl tensor and the inhomogeneity of energy density is discussed.

Energetics of the Einstein-Rosen spacetime

A study covering some aspects of the Einstein--Rosen metric is presented. The electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor are calculated. It is shown that there are no purely magnetic E--R spacetimes, and also that a purely electric E--R spacetime is necessarily static. The geodesics equations are found and circular ones are analyzed in detail. The super--Poynting and the ``Lagrangian'' Poynting vectors are calculated and their expressions are found for two specific examples. It is shown that for a pulse--type solution, both expressions describe an inward radially directed flow of energy, far behind the wave front. The physical significance of such an effect is discussed.
