The Belle II Physics Book

We present the physics program of the Belle II experiment, located on the intensity frontier SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. Belle II collected its first collisions in 2018, and is expected to operate for the next decade. It is anticipated to collect 50/ab of collision data over its lifetime. This book is the outcome of a joint effort of Belle II collaborators and theorists through the Belle II theory interface platform (B2TiP), an effort that commenced in 2014. The aim of B2TiP was to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, tau, quarkonium, electroweak precision measurements and dark sector searches. It is composed of nine working groups (WGs), which are coordinated by teams of theorist and experimentalists conveners: Semileptonic and leptonic B decays, Radiative and Electroweak penguins, phi_1 and phi_2 (time-dependent CP violation) measurements, phi_3 measurements, Charmless hadronic B decay, Charm, Quarkonium(like), tau and low-multiplicity processes, new physics and global fit analyses. This book highlights "golden- and silver-channels", i.e. those that would have the highest potential impact in the field. Theorists scrutinised the role of those measurements and estimated the respective theoretical uncertainties, achievable now as well as prospects for the future. Experimentalists investigated the expected improvements with the large dataset expected from Belle II, taking into account improved performance from the upgraded detector.

Axial form factor of the nucleon at large momentum transfers

Motivated by the emerging possibilities to study threshold pion electroproduction at large momentum transfers at Jefferson Laboratory following the 12 GeV upgrade, we provide a short theory summary and an estimate of the nucleon axial form factor for large virtualities in the $Q^2 = 1-10~\text{GeV}^2$ range using next-to-leading order light-cone sum rules.

Evolution equation for the higher-twist B-meson distribution amplitude

We find that the evolution equation for the three-particle quark-gluon B-meson light-cone distribution amplitude (DA) of subleading twist is completely integrable in the large $N_c$ limit and can be solved exactly. The lowest anomalous dimension is separated from the remaining, continuous, spectrum by a finite gap. The corresponding eigenfunction coincides with the contribution of quark-gluon states to the two-particle DA $\phi_-(\omega)$ so that the evolution equation for the latter is the same as for the leading-twist DA $\phi_+(\omega)$ up to a constant shift in the anomalous dimension. Thus, ``genuine'' three-particle states that belong to the continuous spectrum effectively decouple from $\phi_-(\omega)$ to the leading-order accuracy. In turn, the scale dependence of the full three-particle DA turns out to be nontrivial so that the contribution with the lowest anomalous dimension does not become leading at any scale. The results are illustrated on a simple model that can be used in studies of $1/m_b$ corrections to heavy-meson decays in the framework of QCD factorization or light-cone sum rules.

Electroproduction of the $N^\ast(1535)$ nucleon resonance in QCD

Following the 12 GeV upgrade, a dedicated experiment is planned with the Hall B CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab, with the aim to study electroproduction of nucleon resonances at high photon virtualities up to $Q^2 = 12$ GeV$^2$. In this work we present a QCD-based approach to the theoretical interpretation of these upcoming results in the framework of light-cone sum rules that combine perturbative calculations with dispersion relations and duality. The form factors are thus expressed in terms of $N^\ast(1535)$ light-front wave functions at small transverse separations, called distribution amplitudes. The distribution amplitudes can therefore be determined from the comparison with the experimental data on form factors and compared to the results of lattice QCD simulations. The results of the corresponding next-to-leading order calculation are presented and compared with the existing data. We find that the form factors are dominated by the twist-four distribution amplitudes that are related to the $P$-wave three-quark wave functions of the $N^\ast(1535)$, i.e. to contributions of orbital angular momentum.

Transition form factors $\gamma^*\gamma\to\eta$ and $\gamma^*\gamma\to\eta'$ in QCD

We update the theoretical framework for the QCD calculation of transition form factors $\gamma^*\gamma\to\eta$ and $\gamma^*\gamma\to\eta'$ at large photon virtualities including full next-to-leading order analysis of perturbative corrections, the charm quark contribution, and taking into account SU(3)-flavor breaking effects and the axial anomaly contributions to the power-suppressed twist-four distribution amplitudes. The numerical analysis of the existing experimental data is performed with these improvements.

NLO light-cone sum rules for the nucleon electromagnetic form factors

We study the electromagnetic nucleon form factors within the approach based on light-cone sum rules. We include the next-to-leading-order corrections for the contributions of twist-three and twist-four operators and a consistent treatment of the nucleon mass corrections in our calculation. It turns out that a self-consistent picture arises when the three valence quarks carry $40\%:30\%:30\%$ of the proton momentum.

Nucleon Form Factors and Distribution Amplitudes in QCD

We derive light-cone sum rules for the electromagnetic nucleon form factors including the next-to-leading-order corrections for the contribution of twist-three and twist-four operators and a consistent treatment of the nucleon mass corrections. The essence of this approach is that soft Feynman contributions are calculated in terms of small transverse distance quantities using dispersion relations and duality. The form factors are thus expressed in terms of nucleon wave functions at small transverse separations, called distribution amplitudes, without any additional parameters. The distribution amplitudes, therefore, can be extracted from the comparison with the experimental data on form factors and compared to the results of lattice QCD simulations. A selfconsistent picture emerges, with the three valence quarks carrying 40%:30%:30% of the proton momentum.

Light-Cone Sum Rules for the $D_{(s)}\rightarrow \eta^{(\prime)} l \nu_l$ Form Factor

We present an improved light-cone sum rule analysis of the decay form factors of $D$ and $D_s$ into $\eta$ and $\eta^{\prime}$ and argue that these decays offer a very promissing possibility to determine the leading Fock-state gluonic contribution of the $\eta'$ at future experimental facilities as FAIR or Super-KEKB. We also give the corresponding branching ratios for B decays.

$B \to \pi \ell \nu_l$ Width and $|V_{ub}|$ from QCD Light-Cone Sum Rules

We employ the $B\to\pi$ form factors obtained from QCD light-cone sum rules and calculate the $B\to \pi \ell \nu_l$ width ($\ell=e,\mu$) in units of $1/|V_{ub}|^2$, integrated over the region of accessible momentum transfers, $0\leq q^2\leq 12.0 ~GeV^2$. Using the most recent BABAR-collaboration measurements we extract $|V_{ub}|=(3.50^{+0.38}_{-0.33}\big|_{th.}\pm 0.11 \big|_{exp.})\times 10^{-3}$. The sum rule results for the form factors, taken as an input for a $z$-series parameterization, yield the $q^2$-shape in the whole semileptonic region of $B\to \pi\ell\nu_\ell$. We also present the charged lepton energy spectrum in this decay. Furthermore, the current situation with $B\to \tau\nu_\tau$ is discussed from the QCD point of view. We suggest to use the ratio of the $B\to \pi \tau\nu_\tau$ and $B\to \pi\ell \nu_l ~(\ell =\mu,e) $ widths as an additional test of Standard Model. The sensitivity of this observable to new physics is illustrated by including a charged Higgs-boson contribution in the semileptonic decay amplitude.

Light Cone Sum Rules for the pi0-gamma*-gamma Form Factor Revisited

We provide a theoretical update of the calculations of the pi0-gamma*-gamma form factor in the LCSR framework, including up to six polynomials in the conformal expansion of the pion distribution amplitude and taking into account twist-six corrections related to the photon emission at large distances. The results are compared with the calculations of the B-> pi l nu decay and pion electromagnetic form factors in the same framework. Our conclusion is that the recent BaBar measurements of the pi0-gamma*-gamma form factor at large momentum transfers are consistent with QCD, although they do suggest that the pion DA may have more structure than usually assumed.

Flavor Physics in the Quark Sector

One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. This report summarizes the results of the current generation of experiments that is about to be completed and it confronts these results with the theoretical understanding of the field.

Semileptonic charm decays $D \to \pi l \nu_{\l}$ and $D \to K l \nu_l$ from QCD Light-Cone Sum Rules

We present a new calculation of the $D\to\pi$ and $D \to K$ form factors from QCD light-cone sum rules. The $\overline{MS}$ scheme for the $c$-quark mass is used and the input parameters are updated. The results are $f^+_{D\pi}(0)= 0.67^{+0.10}_{-0.07}$, $f^+_{DK}(0)=0.75^{+0.11}_{-0.08}$ and $f^+_{D\pi}(0)/f^+_{DK}(0)=0.88 \pm 0.05$. Combining the calculated form factors with the latest CLEO data, we obtain $|V_{cd}|=0.225\pm 0.005 \pm 0.003 ^{+0.016}_{-0.012}$ and $|V_{cd}|/|V_{cs}|= 0.236\pm 0.006\pm 0.003\pm 0.013$ where the first and second errors are of experimental origin and the third error is due to the estimated uncertainties of our calculation. We also evaluate the form factors $f^-_{D\pi}$ and $f^-_{DK}$ and predict the slope parameters at $q^2=0$. Furthermore, calculating the form factors from the sum rules at $q^2<0$, we fit them to various parameterizations. After analytic continuation, the shape of the $D\to \pi,K $ form factors in the whole semileptonic region is reproduced, in a good agreement with experiment.

Three-particle contributions to the renormalisation of B-meson light-cone distribution amplitudes

We study light-cone distribution amplitudes of heavy-light systems, such as a B-meson. By an explicit computation, we determine how two-parton distribution amplitudes mix with three-parton ones at one loop: ϕ_+ is shown to mix only into itself, whereas ϕ_- mixes with the difference of three-parton distribution amplitudes Ψ_A-Ψ_V. We determine the corresponding anomalous dimension and we check the gauge independence of our result by considering a general covariant gauge. Finally, we comment on some implications of our result for phenomenological models of these distribution amplitudes.

Renormalization of B-meson distribution amplitudes

We summarize a recent calculation of the evolution kernels of the two-particle B-meson distribution amplitudes $ϕ_+$ and $ϕ_-$ taking into account three-particle contributions. In addition to a few phenomenological comments, we give as a new result the evolution kernel of the combination of three-particle distribution amplitudes $Ψ_A-Ψ_V$ and confirm constraints on $ϕ_+$ and $ϕ_-$ derived from the light-quark equation of motion.

Light-cone sum rules for $B \to π$ form factors revisited

We reconsider and update the QCD light-cone sum rules for $B\to π$ form factors. The gluon radiative corrections to the twist-2 and twist-3 terms in the correlation functions are calculated. The $\bar{MS}$ $b$-quark mass is employed, instead of the one-loop pole mass used in the previous analyses. The light-cone sum rule for $f^+_{Bπ}(q^2)$ is fitted to the measured $q^2$-distribution in $B\to πl ν_l$, fixing the input parameters with the largest uncertainty: the Gegenbauer moments of the pion distribution amplitude. For the $B\to π$ vector form factor at zero momentum transfer we predict $f^+_{Bπ}(0)= 0.26^{+0.04}_{-0.03}$. Combining it with the value of the product $|V_{ub}f^+_{Bπ}(0)|$ extracted from experiment, we obtain $|V_{ub}|=(3.5\pm 0.4\pm 0.2\pm 0.1) \times 10^{-3}$. In addition, the scalar and penguin $B\to π$ form factors $f^0_{Bπ}(q^2)$ and $f^T_{Bπ}(q^2)$ are calculated.
