Floquet engineering of tight-binding Hamiltonians in momentum space lattices

Quantum simulation with ultracold atoms provides a versatile platform to emulate condensed-matter models. In particular, momentum-space lattices enable the realization of programmable tight-binding Hamiltonians. Here, we generalize this approach by exploiting quantum resonances of a periodically driven (shaken) rotor within the Floquet framework. Using first-order time-dependent perturbation theory, we derive analytical relations between the lattice modulation and the effective tight-binding parameters, and identify explicit solutions for several resonances. We further apply optimal-control techniques to enhance the multi-period Floquet fidelity and extend the accessible parameter regimes. Experimentally, we implement this scheme with a Bose-Einstein condensate of rubidium-87 atoms in a dynamically modulated optical lattice. We demonstrate the simulation of the Rice-Mele model, including band-structure measurements and topological edge states, as well as momentum Bloch oscillations, and superlattice configurations with controlled periodicity. Our results establish quantum resonances as a powerful resource for Floquet engineering of tight-binding models in momentum space.

Unitary Transformations using Robust Optimal Control on a Cold Atom Qudit

In this paper, we design and experimentally implement various robust quantum unitary transformations (gates) acting on $d$-dimensional vectors (qudits) by tuning a single control parameter using optimal control theory. The quantum state is represented by the momentum components of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) placed in an optical lattice, with the lattice position varying over a fixed duration serving as the control parameter. To evaluate the quality of these transformations, we employ standard quantum process tomography. In addition, we show how controlled unitary transformations can be used to extend state stabilization to global stabilization within a controlled vector subspace. Finally, we apply them to state tomography, showing how the information about the relative phase between distant momentum components can be extracted by inducing an interference process.

Probing non-ergodicity and symmetry via coherent forward scattering in a shaken rotor

The Coherent Backscattering (CBS) peak is a well-known interferential signature of weak localization in disordered or chaotic systems. More recently, a second interference feature -- the Coherent Forward Scattering (CFS) peak -- was predicted to emerge in the regime of strong localization. However, it has never been directly observed. Here we report the first direct observation of the CFS peak and demonstrate its dual role as a signature of non-ergodicity and as a probe of symmetries in quantum chaotic systems. Using a shaken rotor model realized with a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of ultracold atoms in a modulated optical lattice, we investigate dynamical localization in momentum space. The CFS peak emerges in the position distribution as a consequence of non-ergodic dynamics, while its growth timescale reveals the underlying localization length. By finely tuning the modulation, we control time-reversal and parity symmetries and measure their distinct effects on both CBS and CFS peaks. Our results highlight the strong link of both the temporal growth and contrast of the CFS with symmetry and localization, making it a robust probe of these properties. This work opens new directions for characterizing non-ergodicity and symmetries in quantum chaotic or disordered systems, with possible applications in many-body localization and chaos.

A regular Hamiltonian halting ratchet for matter wave transport

We report on the design of a Hamiltonian ratchet exploiting periodically at rest integrable trajectories in the phase space of a modulated periodic potential, leading to the linear non-diffusive transport of particles. Using Bose-Einstein condensates in a modulated one-dimensional optical lattice, we make the first observations of this new spatial ratchet transport. In the semiclassical regime, the quantum transport strongly depends on the effective Planck constant due to Floquet state mixing. We also demonstrate the interest of quantum optimal control for efficient initial state preparation into the transporting Floquet states to enhance the transport periodicity.

Phase-space distributions of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice: Optimal shaping and reconstruction

We apply quantum optimal control to shape the phase-space distribution of Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional optical lattice. By a time-dependent modulation of the lattice position, determined from optimal control theory, we prepare, in the phase space of each lattice site, translated and squeezed Gaussian states, and superpositions of Gaussian states. Complete reconstruction of these non-trivial states is performed through a maximum likelihood state tomography. As a practical application of our method to quantum simulations, we initialize the atomic wavefunction in an optimal Floquet-state superposition to enhance dynamical tunneling signals.
