Design of Magnetic Textures of Ad-Nanocorrals with an Extra Adatom

It is shown that in antiferromagnetic open or closed corrals of magnetic adatoms grown on surfaces, the attachment of a single extra adatom anywhere in the corral impacts on the geometrical topology of the nanosystem and generates complex magnetic structures when a magnetic field is applied or a magnetic coupling to a ferromagnetic substrate exists. The spin configuration of the corral can be tuned to a non-planar state or a planar non-collinear or ferrimagnetic state by adjusting its number of sites, the location of the extra adatom or the strength of the coupling to the ferromagnetic substrate. This shows the possibility to generate non-trivial magnetic textures with atom by atom engineering anywhere in the corral and not only at the edges.

The even-odd effect in short antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains

Motivated by recent experiments on chemically synthesized magnetic molecular chains we investigate the lowest lying energy band of short spin-$s$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains focusing on effects of open boundaries. By numerical diagonalization we find that the Landé pattern in the energy levels, i.e. E(S) \propto S(S+1) for total spin S, known from e.g. ring-shaped nanomagnets, can be recovered in odd-membered chains while strong deviations are found for the lowest excitations in chains with an even number of sites. This particular even-odd effect in the short Heisenberg chains cannot be explained by simple effective Hamiltonians and symmetry arguments. We go beyond these approaches, taking into account quantum fluctuations by means of a path integral description and the valence bond basis, but the resulting quantum edge-spin picture which is known to work well for long chains does not agree with the numerical results for short chains and cannot explain the even-odd effect. Instead, by analyzing also the classical chain model, we show that spatial fluctuations dominate the physical behavior in short chains, with length N < exp(πs), for any spin s. Such short chains are found to display a unique behavior, which is not related to the thermodynamic limit and cannot be described well by theories developed for this regime.

The $s=1/2$ Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Model on Fullerene-Type Symmetry Clusters

The $s_{i}={1/2}$ nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is considered for spins sitting on the vertices of clusters with the connectivity of fullerene molecules and a number of sites $n$ ranging from 24 to 32. Using the permutational and spin inversion symmetries of the Hamiltonian the low energy spectrum is calculated for all the irreducible representations of the symmetry group of each cluster. Frustration and connectivity result in non-trivial low energy properties, with the lowest excited states being singlets except for $n=28$. Same hexagon and same pentagon correlations are the most effective in the minimization of the energy, with the $n=32-D_{3h}$ symmetry cluster having an unusually strong singlet intra-pentagon correlation. The magnetization in a field shows no discontinuities unlike the icosahedral $I_h$ fullerene clusters, but only plateaux with the most pronounced for $n=28$. The spatial symmetry as well as the connectivity of the clusters appear to be important for the determination of their magnetic properties.

Long-time electron spin storage via dynamical suppression of hyperfine-induced decoherence in a quantum dot

The coherence time of an electron spin decohered by the nuclear spin environment in a quantum dot can be substantially increased by subjecting the electron to suitable dynamical decoupling sequences. We analyze the performance of high-level decoupling protocols by using a combination of analytical and exact numerical methods, and by paying special attention to the regimes of large inter-pulse delays and long-time dynamics, which are outside the reach of standard average Hamiltonian theory descriptions. We demonstrate that dynamical decoupling can remain efficient far beyond its formal domain of applicability, and find that a protocol exploiting concatenated design provides best performance for this system in the relevant parameter range. In situations where the initial electron state is known, protocols able to completely freeze decoherence at long times are constructed and characterized. The impact of system and control non-idealities is also assessed, including the effect of intra-bath dipolar interaction, magnetic field bias and bath polarization, as well as systematic pulse imperfections. While small bias field and small bath polarization degrade the decoupling fidelity, enhanced performance and temporal modulation result from strong applied fields and high polarizations. Overall, we find that if the relative errors of the control parameters do not exceed 5%, decoupling protocols can still prolong the coherence time by up to two orders of magnitude.

The Icosahedral Symmetry Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Model

The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on icosahedral symmetry $I_{h}$ fullerene clusters exhibits unconventional magnetic properties, despite the lack of anisotropic interactions. At the classical level, and for number of sites $n \leq 720$, the magnetization has two discontinuities in an external magnetic field, except from the dodecahedron where it has three, emphasizing the role of frustration introduced by the pentagons in the unusual magnetic properties. For spin magnitudes $s_{i}={1/2}$ there is a discontinuity of quantum character close to saturation for $n \leq 80$. This common magnetic behavior indicates that it is a generic feature of $I_{h}$ fullerene clusters, irrespectively of $n$.

The Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Model on Clusters with Icosahedral Symmetry

The antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is considered for spins $s_{i}={1/2}$ located on the vertices of the dodecahedron and the icosahedron, which belong to the point symmetry group $I_{h}$. Taking into account the permutational and spin inversion symmetries of the Hamiltonian results in a drastic reduction of the dimensionality of the problem, leading to full diagonalization for both clusters. There is a strong signature of the frustration present in the systems in the low energy spectrum, where the first excited states are singlets. Frustration also results in a doubly-peaked specific heat as a function of temperature for the dodecahedron. Furthermore, there is a discontinuity in the magnetization as a function of magnetic field for the dodecahedron, where a specific total spin sector never becomes the ground state in a field. This discontinuity is accompanied by a magnetization plateau. The calculation is also extended for $s_{i}=1$ where both systems again have singlet excitations. The magnetization of the dodecahedron has now two discontinuities in an external field and also magnetization plateaux, and the specific heat of the icosahedron a two-peak structure as a function of temperature. The similarities between the two systems suggest that the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a larger cluster with the same symmetry, the 60-site cluster, will have similar properties.

Spin Polaron Effective Magnetic Model for La_{0.5}Ca_{0.5}MnO_3

The conventional paradigm of charge order for La_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3 for x=0.5 has been challenged recently by a Zener polaron picture emerging from experiments and theoretical calculations. The effective low energy Hamiltonian for the magnetic degrees of freedom has been found to be a cubic Heisenberg model, with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and frustrating antiferromagnetic next nearest neighbor interactions in the planes, and antiferromagnetic interaction between planes. With linear spin wave theory and diagonalization of small clusters up to 27 sites we find that the behavior of the model interpolates between the A and CE-type magnetic structures when a frustrating intraplanar interaction is tuned. The values of the interactions calculated by ab initio methods indicate a possible non-bipartite picture of polaron ordering differing from the conventional one.

Magnetic Anisotropy in the Molecular Complex V15

We apply degenerate perturbation theory to investigate the effects of magnetic anisotropy in the magnetic molecule V15. Magnetic anisotropy is introduced via Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the full Hilbert space of the system. Our model provides an explanation for the rounding of transitions in the magnetization as a function of applied field at low temperature, from which an estimate for the DM interaction is found. We find that the calculated energy differences of the lowest energy states are consistent with the available data. Our model also offers a novel explanation for the hysteretic nature of the time-dependent magnetization data.

Accurate Results from Perturbation Theory for Strongly Frustrated $S=1/2$ Heisenberg Spin Clusters

We investigate the use of perturbation theory in finite sized frustrated spin systems by calculating the effect of quantum fluctuations on coherent states derived from the classical ground state. We first calculate the ground and first excited state wavefunctions as a function of applied field for a 12-site system and compare with the results of exact diagonalization. We then apply the technique to a 20-site system with the same three fold site coordination as the 12-site system. Frustration results in asymptotically convergent series for both systems which are summed with Padé approximants. We find that at zero magnetic field the different connectivity of the two systems leads to a triplet first excited state in the 12-site system and a singlet first excited state in the 20-site system, while the ground state is a singlet for both. We also show how the analytic structure of the Padé approximants at $|λ| \simeq 1$ evolves in the complex $λ$ plane at the values of the applied field where the ground state switches between spin sectors and how this is connected with the non-trivial dependence of the $ $ number on the strength of quantum fluctuations. We discuss the origin of this difference in the energy spectra and in the analytic structures. We also characterize the ground and first excited states according to the values of the various spin correlation functions.
