Wave pattern induced by a localized obstacle in the flow of a one-dimensional polariton condensate

Motivated by recent experiments on generation of wave patterns by a polariton condensate incident on a localized obstacle, we study the characteristics of such flows under the condition that irreversible processes play a crucial role in the system. The dynamics of a non-resonantly pumped polariton condensate in a quasi-one-dimensional quantum wire is modeled by a Gross-Pitaevskii equation with additional phenomenological terms accounting for the dissipation and pumping processes. The response of the condensate flow to an external potential describing a localized obstacle is considered in the weak-perturbation limit and also in the nonlinear regime. The transition from a viscous drag to a regime of wave resistance is identified and studied in detail.

Generation of dispersive shock waves by the flow of a Bose-Einstein condensate past a narrow obstacle

We study the flow of a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate incident onto a narrow obstacle. We consider a configuration in which a dispersive shock is formed and propagates upstream away from the obstacle while the downstream flow reaches a supersonic velocity, generating a sonic horizon. Conditions for obtaining this regime are explicitly derived and the accuracy of our analytical results is confirmed by numerical simulations.

Quantum fluctuations around black hole horizons in Bose-Einstein condensates

We study several realistic configurations allowing to realize an acoustic horizon in the flow of a one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. In each case we give an analytical description of the flow pattern, of the spectrum of Hawking radiation and of the associated quantum fluctuations. Our calculations confirm that the non local correlations of the density fluctuations previously studied in a simplified model provide a clear signature of Hawking radiation also in realistic configurations. In addition we explain by direct computation how this non local signal relates to short range modifications of the density correlations.

Breakdown of the superfluidity of a matter wave in a random environment

We consider a guided Bose-Einstein matter wave flowing through a disordered potential. We determine the critical velocity at which superfluidity is broken and compute its statistical properties. They are shown to be connected to extreme values of the random potential. Experimental implementations of this physics are discussed.

Anderson localization of a weakly interacting one dimensional Bose gas

We consider the phase coherent transport of a quasi one-dimensional beam of Bose-Einstein condensed particles through a disordered potential of length L. Among the possible different types of flow identified in [T. Paul et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 210602 (2007)], we focus here on the supersonic stationary regime where Anderson localization exists. We generalize the diffusion formalism of Dorokhov-Mello-Pereyra-Kumar to include interaction effects. It is shown that interactions modify the localization length and also introduce a length scale L* for the disordered region, above which most of the realizations of the random potential lead to time dependent flows. A Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density of the transmission coefficient that takes this new effect into account is introduced and solved. The theoretical predictions are verified numerically for different types of disordered potentials. Experimental scenarios for observing our predictions are discussed.

Bogoliubov Theory of acoustic Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein Condensates

We apply the microscopic Bogoliubov theory of dilute Bose-Einstein condensates to analyze quantum and thermal fluctuations in a flowing atomic condensate in the presence of a sonic horizon. For the simplest case of a step-like horizon, closed-form analytical expressions are found for the spectral distribution of the analog Hawking radiation and for the density correlation function. The peculiar long-distance density correlations that appear as a consequence of the Hawking emission features turns out to be reinforced by a finite initial temperature of the condensate. The analytical results are in good quantitative agreement with first principle numerical calculations.

Polarization induced instabilities in external four-mirror Fabry-Perot cavities

Various four-mirror optical resonators are studied in the perspective of realizing passive stacking cavities. A comparative study of the mechanical stability is provided. The polarization properties of the cavity eigenmodes are described and it is shown that the effect of mirror misalignments (or motions) induces polarization and stacking power instabilities. These instabilities increase with the finesse of the Fabry-Perot cavity. A tetrahedral configuration of the four mirrors is found to minimize the consequences of the mirrors's motion and misalignment by reducing the instability parameter by at least two orders of magnitude

Superfluidity versus Anderson localization in a dilute Bose gas

We consider the motion of a quasi one dimensional beam of Bose-Einstein condensed particles in a disordered region of finite extent. Interaction effects lead to the appearance of two distinct regions of stationary flow. One is subsonic and corresponds to superfluid motion. The other one is supersonic, dissipative and shows Anderson localization. We compute analytically the interaction-dependent localization length. We also explain the disappearance of the supersonic stationary flow for large disordered samples.

Dipole Oscillations of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in Presence of Defects and Disorder

We consider dipole oscillations of a trapped dilute Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a scattering potential consisting either in a localized defect or in an extended disordered potential. In both cases the breaking of superfluidity and the damping of the oscillations are shown to be related to the appearance of a nonlinear dissipative flow. At supersonic velocities the flow becomes asymptotically dissipationless.

Propagation of a Dark Soliton in a Disordered Bose-Einstein Condensate

We consider the propagation of a dark soliton in a quasi 1D Bose-Einstein condensate in presence of a random potential. This configuration involves nonlinear effects and disorder, and we argue that, contrarily to the study of stationary transmission coefficients through a nonlinear disordered slab, it is a well defined problem. It is found that a dark soliton decays algebraically, over a characteristic length which is independent of its initial velocity, and much larger than both the healing length and the 1D scattering length of the system. We also determine the characteristic decay time.

Bose beams: coherent propagation through a guide

We compute the stationary profiles of a coherent beam of Bose condensed atoms propagating through a guide. Special emphasis is put on the effect of an obstacle present on the trajectory of the beam. The obstacle considered (such as a bend in the guide, or a laser field perpendicular to the beam) results in a repulsive or an attractive potential acting on the condensate. Different behaviors are observed when varying the beam velocity (with respect to the speed of sound), the size of the obstacle (relative to the healing length) and the intensity and sign of the potential. The existence of bound states of the condensate is also considered.

Diffractive corrections in the trace formula for polygonal billiards

We derive contributions to the trace formula for the spectral density accounting for the role of diffractive orbits in two-dimensional polygonal billiards. In polygons, diffraction typically occurs at the boundary of a family of trajectories. In this case the first diffractive correction to the contribution of the family to the periodic orbit expansion is of order of the one of an isolated orbit, and gives the first $\sqrt{\hbar}$ correction to the leading semi-classical term. For treating these corrections Keller's geometrical theory of diffraction is inadequate and we develop an alternative approximation based on Kirchhoff's theory. Numerical checks show that our procedure allows to reduce the typical semi-classical error by about two orders of magnitude. The method permits to treat the related problem of flux-line diffraction with the same degree of accuracy.

Rough droplet model for spherical metal clusters

We study the thermally activated oscillations, or capillary waves, of a neutral metal cluster within the liquid drop model. These deformations correspond to a surface roughness which we characterize by a single parameter $Δ$. We derive a simple analytic approximate expression determining $Δ$ as a function of temperature and cluster size. We then estimate the induced effects on shell structure by means of a periodic orbit analysis and compare with recent data for shell energy of sodium clusters in the size range $50 < N < 250$. A small surface roughness $Δ\simeq 0.6$ Å~ is seen to give a reasonable account of the decrease of amplitude of the shell structure observed in experiment. Moreover -- contrary to usual Jahn-Teller type of deformations -- roughness correctly reproduces the shape of the shell energy in the domain of sizes considered in experiment.

Bound states of 3He in 3He-4He mixture films

3He atoms dissolved in superfluid 4He may form dimers (3He)2 in two-dimensional geometries. We study dimer formation in films of dilute 3He-4He mixture. After designing a schematic 3He-3He interaction potential we calculate the dimer binding energy for various substrates. It is shown that 3He impurity states localized near the substrate give rise to the largest magnitudes of the binding energies.
