Slitless grism spectroscopy with the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys

The Advanced Camera for Surveys on-board HST is equipped with a set of one grism and three prisms for low-resolution, slitless spectroscopy in the range 1150 Ang. to 10500 Ang. The G800L grism provides optical spectroscopy between 5500 Ang. and 1 micron with a mean dispersion of 39 Ang./pix and 24 Ang./pix (in the first spectral order) when coupled with the Wide Field and the High Resolution Channels, respectively. Given the lack of any on-board calibration lamps for wavelength and narrow band flat-fielding, the G800L grism can only be calibrated using astronomical targets. In this paper, we describe the strategy used to calibrate the grism in orbit, with special attention to the treatment of the field dependence of the grism flat-field, wavelength solution and sensitivity in both Channels.

Morphology and evolution of emission line galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field

We investigate the properties and evolution of a sample of galaxies selected to have prominent emission lines in low-resolution grism spectra of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). These objects, eGRAPES, are late type blue galaxies, characterized by small proper sizes (R_50 < 2 kpc) in the 4350A rest-frame, low masses (5x10^9 M_sun), and a wide range of luminosities and surface brightnesses. The masses, sizes and volume densities of these objects appear to change very little up to a redshift of z=1.5. On the other hand, their surface brightness decreases significantly from z=1.5 to z=0 while their mass-to-light ratio increases two-folds. This could be a sign that most of low redshift eGRAPES have an older stellar population than high redshift eGRAPES and hence that most eGRAPES formed at higher redshifts. The average volume density of eGRAPES is (1.8 \pm 0.3)x10^{-3} Mpc^{-3} between 0.3 < z < 1.5. Many eGRAPES would formally have been classified as Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies (LCBGs) if these had been selected based on small physical size, blue intrinsic color, and high surface brightness, while the remainder of the sample discussed in this paper forms an extension of LCBGs towards fainter luminosities.

The Structure and Star Formation History of Early-Type Galaxies in the UDF/GRAPES Survey

We present a two-pronged approach to the formation of early-type galaxies, using a sample of 18 galaxies at 0.5 < z < 1 from the HST/ACS Ultra Deep Field and GRAPES surveys: 1) We combine slitless low resolution spectroscopy from the GRAPES dataset with simple models of galaxy formation to explore their star formation histories. 2) We also perform an analysis of their surface brightness distribution with the unprecedented details provided by the ACS superb angular resolution and photometric depth. Our spectroscopic analysis reveals that their stellar populations are rather homogeneous in age and metallicity and formed at redshifts z ~ 2-5. Evolving them passively, they become practically indistinguishable from ellipticals at z = 0. Also, their isophotal shapes appear very similar to those observed for nearby ellipticals, in that the percentages of disky and boxy galaxies at z ~ 1 are close to the values measured at z = 0. Moreover,we find that the isophotal structure of z ~ 1 early-type galaxies obeys the correlations already observed among nearby ellipticals, i.e. disky ellipticals have generally higher characteristic ellipticities, and boxy ellipticals have larger half-light radii and are brighter in the restframe B band. In this respect then, no significant structural differences are seen for ellipticals between z = 0 and 1.

Passively Evolving Early-type Galaxies at 1.4<z<2.5 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field

We report on a complete sample of 7 luminous early-type galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) with spectroscopic redshifts between 1.39 and 2.47 and to K<23 AB. Using the BzK selection criterion we have pre-selected a set of objects over the UDF which fulfill the photometric conditions for being passively evolving galaxies at z>1.4. Low-resolution spectra of these objects have been extracted from the HST+ACS grism data taken over the UDF by the GRAPES project. Redshift for the 7 galaxies have been identified based on the UV feature at rest frame 2640 =1.7 appears to be roughly a factor of 2--3 smaller than that of their local counterparts, further supporting the notion that such massive and old galaxies are already ubiquitous at early cosmic times. Much smaller effective radii are derived for some of the objects compared to local massive ellipticals, which may be due to morphological K corrections, evolution, or the presence of a central point-like source. Nuclear activity is indeed present in a subset of the galaxies, as revealed by them being hard X-ray sources, hinting to AGN activity having played a role in discontinuing star formation.

An overdensity of galaxies at z=5.9 +/-0.2 in the Ultra Deep Field confirmed using the ACS grism

We present grism spectra taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys to identify 29 red sources with (i'-z') > 0.9 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). Of these 23 are found to be galaxies at redshifts between z=5.4 and 6.7, identified by the break at 1216 angstrom due to IGM absorption; two are late type dwarf stars with red colors; and four are galaxies with colors and spectral shape similar to dust reddened or old galaxies at redshifts z~1-2. This constitutes the largest uniform, flux-limited sample of spectroscopically confirmed galaxies at such faint fluxes z'<27.5. Many are also among the most distant spectroscopically confirmed galaxies (at redshifts up to z=6.7). We find a significant overdensity of galaxies at redshifts z=5.9 +/- 0.2. Nearly two thirds of the galaxies in our sample (15/23) belong to this peak. Taking into account the selection function and the redshift sensitivity of the survey, we get a conservative overdensity of at least a factor of two along the line-of-sight. The galaxies found in this redshift peak are also localized in the plane of the sky in a non-random manner, occupying about half of the ACS chip. Thus the volume overdensity is a factor of four. The star-formation rate derived from detected sources in this overdense region is sufficient to reionize the local IGM.

Stars in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field

We identified 46 unresolved source candidates in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, down to i775 = 29.5. Unresolved objects were identified using a parameter S, which measures the deviation from the curve-of-growth of a point source. Extensive testing of this parameter was carried out, including the effects of decreasing signal-to-noise and of the apparent motions of stars, which demonstrated that stars brighter than i775 = 27.0 could be robustly identified. Low resolution grism spectra of the 28 objects brighter than i775 = 27.0 identify 18 M and later stellar type dwarfs, 2 candidate L-dwarfs, 2 QSOs, and 4 white dwarfs. Using the observed population of dwarfs with spectral type M4 or later, we derive a Galactic disk scale height of 400 \pm 100 pc for M and L stars. The local white dwarf density is computed to be as high as (1.1 \pm 0.3) x10^(-2) stars/pc^3. Based on observations taken 73 days apart, we determined that no object in the field has a proper motion larger than 0.027"/year (3 sigma detection limit). No high velocity white dwarfs were identified in the HUDF, and all four candidates appear more likely to be part of the Galactic thick disk. The lack of detected halo white dwarfs implies that, if the dark matter halo is 12 Gyr old, white dwarfs account for less than 10% of the dark matter halo mass.

Discovery of a Solitaire Dwarf Galaxy in the APPLES Survey

During the APPLES parallel campaign, the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys has resolved a distant stellar system, which appears to be an isolated dwarf galaxy. It is characterized by a circularly symmetric distribution of stars with an integrated magnitude m(F775W) = 20.13 +- 0.02, a central surface brightness of ~ 21.33 +- 0.18 mag/arcsec^2 and a half-light radius of ~ 1.8 arcsec. The ACS and VLT spectra show no evidence of ionized gas and appear dominated by a 3 Gyr old stellar population. The OB spectral type derived for two resolved stars in the grism data and the systemic radial velocity of ~ 670 km/s measured from the VLT data give a fiducial distance of ~ 9 +- 2 Mpc. These findings, with the support of the spatial morphology, would classify the system among the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxies. Following the IAU rules, we have named this newly discovered galaxy APPLES 1. An intriguing peculiarity of APPLES 1 is that the properties (age and metallicity) of the stellar content so far detected are similar to those of dSph galaxies in the Local Group, where star formation is thought to be driven by galaxy interactions and mergers. Yet, APPLES 1 seems not to be associated with a major group or cluster of galaxies. Therefore, APPLES 1 could be the first example of a field dSph galaxy with self-sustained and regulated star formation and, therefore, would make an interesting test case for studies of the formation and evolution of unperturbed dSph galaxies.

GRAPES, Grism Spectroscopy of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field: Description and Data Reduction

We present deep unbiased spectroscopy of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) carried out using the slitless grism spectroscopy mode of the Advance Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The GRIsm ACS Program for Extragalactic Science (GRAPES) achieves continuum detection as faint as $z_{AB}=27.2$ using 40 orbits ($9.2 \times 10^4$ seconds) on HST. The data were taken at four orientation angles to correct for the overlap of spectra. GRAPES data provide a unique, uninterrupted, low resolution (R=100) spectral coverage for $5500Å< λ< 10500Å$, and allow us to detect high redshift galaxies at $4 < z < 7$ whether they have $\lya$ lines or just show the Lyman Break, as well as find low luminosity AGNs in an unbiased fashion. This paper describes in detail the observations and the data reduction, and examines the quality of the extracted spectra. Subsequent papers will deal with the analysis of the data. The extracted and calibrated GRAPES spectra will be available from MAST at STScI.

Cosmic Shear from STIS pure parallels: III. Analysis of Cycle 9 pure parallels

Following the detection of a cosmic shear signal at the 30'' scale using archival parallel data from the STIS CCD camera onboard HST in Haemmerle et al. (2002), we analyzed a larger data set obtained from an HST GO pure parallel program. Although this data set is considerably larger than the one analyzed previously, we do not obtain a significant detection of the cosmic shear signal. The potential causes of this null result are the multiple systematics that plague the STIS CCD data, and in particular the degradation of the CCD charge transfer efficiency after 4 years in space.

A weak lensing analysis of a STIS dark-lens candidate

We perform a weak lensing analysis on a previously reported dark-lens candidate on STIS Parallel data (Miralles et al. 2002). New VLT-data indicate that the reported signal originates from a small number of galaxies tangentially aligned towards the center of the STIS field but no signature for an extended mass distribution is found. We argue that we should be able to detect a massive cluster ($M\geq 3.2\times 10^{14}M_{\odot}$) through its lensing signal up to a redshift of $z\approx 0.6$ with our data. Also the double image hypothesis of two galaxies with very similar morphologies in the STIS data is ruled out with colour information.

Flat-fielding of ACS WFC grism data

In direct imaging, broad band flat-fields can easily be applied to correct deviation from uniform sensitivity across the detector field. However for slitless spectroscopy data the flat field is both field and wavelength dependent. The effect of the wavelength dependent flat field for the slitless G800L grism mode of the ACS Wide Field Channel (WFC) has been investigated from observations of a flux calibrator at different positions in the field. The results of various flat-fielding schemes are presented including application of a flat field cube derived from in-orbit broad band filter flat fields. Excellent results are reported with deviations in the extracted spectra <2% across the WFC field.

The Wavelength Calibration of the WFC grism

We present the wavelength solution derived for the G800L grism with the Wide Field Channel from the spectra of two Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars, WR 45 and WR 96. The data were acquired in-orbit during the SMOV tests and the early INTERIM calibration program. We have obtained an average dispersion of 39.2 A/pix in the first order, 20.5 A/pix in the second and -42.5 A/pix in the negative first order. We show that the wavelength solution is strongly field-dependent, with an amplitude of the variation of about 11% from the center of the WFC aperture to the corners. The direction of the field-dependence is the diagonal from the image left top corner (amplifier A) to the bottom right corner (amplifier D). These trends are observed for all grism orders. We also describe the calibration files derived from the SMOV and INTERIM data which are used by the ST-ECF slitless extraction code aXe.

Freshly ionized matter around the final Helium shell flash object V4334 Sgr (Sakurai's object)

We report on the discovery of recently ionized hydrogen-deficient gas in the immediate circumstellar environment of the final helium shell flash star V4334 Sgr (Sakurai's object). On spectra obtained with FORS2 multi-object spectroscopy we have found spatially extended (about 2") emission from [N II], [O I], [O II] and very faint Halpha and [S II]. In the [N II] (ll6548,83) lines we have identified two components located at velocities -350 +/-50 and +200 +/-50 km/s, relative to V4334 Sgr itself. The full width of the [N II] l6583 feature at zero intensity corresponds to a velocity spread of about 1500 km/s. Based on the available data it is not possible to conclusively determine the mechanism of ionization. Both photo-ionization, from a rapidly evolving central star, and shock excitation, as the result of the collision of the fast ouflows with slower circumstellar matter, could account for the observed lines. The central star is still hidden behind strong dust absorption, since only a faint highly reddened continuum is apparent in the spectra. Theory states that it will become hotter and will retrace its post-asymptotic giant branch evolution towards the planetary nebula domain. Our detection of the ionized ejecta from the very late helium shell flash marks the beginning of a new phase in this star's amazingly rapid evolution.

Cosmic shear from STIS pure parallels - II. Analysis

We report on the marginal detection of cosmic shear on sub-arcmin scales with archive data from the STIS camera on board HST. For the measurement 121 galaxy fields with a field of view of 51'' x 51'' are used to obtain an rms cosmic shear of ~ 4% with 1.5sigma significance. This value is consistent with groundbased results obtained by other groups on larger scales, and with theoretical predictions for a standard LambdaCDM cosmology. To show the suitability of STIS for weak shear measurements we carefully investigated the stability of the PSF. We demonstrate that small temporal changes do not affect the cosmic shear measurement by more than ~ 10%. We also discuss the influence of various weighting and selection schemes for the galaxy ellipticities.

A conspicuous tangential alignment of galaxies in a STIS Parallel Shear Survey field: A new dark-lens candidate ?

We report the serendipituous discovery of a conspicuous alignment of galaxies in a field obtained through the STIS Parallel Shear Survey. This project collects randomly distributed 50'' x 50'' fields to investigate the cosmic shear effect on this scale. Analyzing the parallel observations having the Seyfert galaxy NGC625 as primary target, we recognized over the whole field of view a strong apparent tangential alignment of galaxy ellipticities towards the image center. The field shows several arclet-like features typical for images of massive galaxy clusters, but no obvious over-density of bright foreground galaxies. We also find a multiple image candidate. On the basis of the possible strong and weak lensing effect within the data, we discuss whether this could be compatible with a massive halo with no clear optical counterpart.

The cosmic shear STIS parallel program - First results

Since the Universe is inhomogeneous on scales well below the Hubble radius, light bundles from distant galaxies are deflected and distorted by the tidal gravitational field of the large-scale matter distribution as they propagate through the Universe. Two-point statistical measures of the observed ellipticities, like the dispersion within a finite aperture or the ellipticity cross-correlation, can be related to the power spectrum of the large-scale structure. The measurement of cosmic shear (especially on small angular scales) can thus be used to constrain cosmological parameters and to test cosmological structure formation in the non-linear regime, without any assumptions about the relation between luminous and dark matter. In this paper we will present preliminary cosmic shear measurements on sub-arcminute scales, obtained from archival STIS parallel data. The high angular resolution of HST, together with the sensitivity and PSF-stability of STIS, allows us to measure cosmic shear along many independent lines-of-sight. Ongoing STIS parallel observations, currently being carried out in the frame of a big GO program (8562+9248), will greatly increase the number of available useful fields and will enable us to measure cosmic shear with higher accuracy on sub-arcminute scales.

Cosmic Shear from STIS Pure Parallels: Analysis

The measurement of cosmic shear requires deep imaging with high image quality on many lines of sight to sample the statistics of large-scale structure. The expected distortion of galaxy images by cosmic shear on the STIS angular scale is a few percent, therefore the PSF anisotropy has to be understood and controlled to an accuracy better than 1%. In this poster we present the analysis of the PSF of STIS and a preliminary cosmic shear measurement using archival data from the STIS pure parallel program to show that the STIS camera on-board HST is well suited for our project. The data reduction and catalog production are described in an accompanying paper (astro-ph/0102330).

Detection of Cosmic Shear from STIS Parallel Archive Data: Data Analysis

In June 1997, parallel observations using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the HST started to be taken in substantial numbers along many different lines-of-sight. We are using the imaging data to investigate the distortion of background galaxies by the gravitational field of the large scale matter distribution, also known as Cosmic Shear. This poster presents the data and the catalog production that leads to the cosmic shear result presented in the poster "First Cosmic Shear results from STIS parallel program archive data" (Haemmerle et al., this conference). The data is publicly available also at http://www.stecf.org/projects/shear .
