Spin injection and relaxation in a mesoscopic superconductor

We study spin accumulation and spin relaxation in a superconducting nanowire. Spins are injected and detected by using a set of magnetic tunnel contact electrodes, closely spaced along the nanowire. We observe a giant enhancement of the spin accumulation of up to five orders of magnitude on transition into the superconducting state, consistent with the expected changes in the density of states. The spin relaxation length decreases by an order of magnitude from its value in the normal state. These measurements combined with our theoretical model, allow us to distinguish the individual spin flip mechanisms present in the transport channel. Our conclusion is that magnetic impurities rather than spin-orbit coupling dominate spin-flip scattering in the superconducting state.

Laser cooling and trapping of atomic strontium for ultracold atom physics, high-precision spectroscopy and quantum sensors

This review describes the production of atomic strontium samples at ultra-low temperature and at high phase-space density, and their possible use for physical studies and applications. We describe the process of loading a magneto-optical trap from an atomic beam and preparing the sample for high precision measurements. Particular emphasis is given to the applications of ultracold Sr samples, spanning from optical frequency metrology to force sensing at micrometer scale.

Cooling and trapping of ultra-cold strontium isotopic mixtures

We present the simultaneous cooling and trapping of an isotopic mixture in a magneto-optical trap and we describe the transfer of the mixture into a conservative, far-off resonant dipole trap. The mixture is prepared with a new technique that applies to intermediate and heavy alkaline earth like atoms. In this work, 88Sr and 86Sr are simultaneously loaded first into the magneto-optical trap operated on the 1S0-3P1 spin-forbidden line at 689 nm, and then transferred into the dipole trap. We observe fast inter-species thermalization in the dipole trap which allows one to set a lower bound on the 88Sr-86Sr elastic cross section.

Long-lived Bloch oscillations with bosonic Sr atoms and application to gravity measurement at micrometer scale

We report on the observation of Bloch oscillations on the unprecedented time scale of severalseconds. The experiment is carried out with ultra-cold bosonic strontium-88 loaded into a vertical optical standing wave. The negligible atom-atom elastic cross section and the absence of spin makes $^{88}$Sr an almost ideal Bose gas insensitive to typical mechanisms of decoherence due to thermalization and to external stray fields. The small size enables precision measurements of forces at micrometer scale. This is a challenge in physics for studies of surfaces, Casimir effects, and searches for deviations from Newtonian gravity predicted by theories beyond the standard model.

Direct demonstration of decoupling of spin and charge currents in nanostructures

The notion of decoupling of spin and charge currents is one of the basic principles underlying the rapidly expanding feld of Spintronics. However, no direct demonstration of the phenomenon exists. We report a novel measurement, in which a non-equilibrium spin population is created by a point-like injection of current from a ferromagnet across a tunnel barrier into a one dimensional spin channel, and detected differentially by a pair of ferromagnetic electrodes placed symmetrically about the injection point. We demonstrate that the spin current is strictly isotropic about the injection point and, therefore, completely decoupled from the uni-directional charge current.

Enhanced spin accumulation in a superconductor

A lateral array of ferromagnetic tunnel junctions is used to inject and detect non-equilibrium quasi-particle spin distribution in a superconducting strip made of Al. The strip width and thickness is kept below the quasi particle spin diffusion length in Al. Non-local measurements in multiple parallel and antiparallel magnetic states of the detectors are used to in-situ determine the quasi-particle spin diffusion length. A very large increase in the spin accumulation in the superconducting state compared to that in the normal state is observed and is attributed to a diminishing of the quasi-particle population by opening of the gap below the transition temperature.

Spin flip scattering at Al surfaces

Non-local measurements are performed on a multi terminal device to $in-situ$ determine the spin diffusion length and in combination with resistivity measurements also the spin relaxation time in Al films. By varying the thickness of Al we determine the contribution to spin relaxation from surface scattering. From the temperature dependence of the spin diffusion length it is established that the spin relaxation is impurity dominated at low temperature. A comparison of the spin and momentum relaxation lengths for different thicknesses reveals that the spin flip scattering at the surfaces is weak compared to that within the bulk of the Al films.

Cooling of Sr to high phase-space density by laser and sympathetic cooling in isotopic mixtures

Based on an experimental study of two-body and three-body collisions in ultracold strontium samples, a novel optical-sympathetic cooling method in isotopic mixtures is demonstrated. Without evaporative cooling, a phase-space density of $6\times10^{-2}$ is obtained with a high spatial density that should allow to overcome the difficulties encountered so far to reach quantum degeneracy for Sr atoms.

Precision frequency measurement of visible intercombination lines of strontium

We report the direct frequency measurement of the visible 5s$^2$ $^1$S$_0$-5s 5p$^3$P$_1$ intercombination line of strontium that is considered a possible candidate for a future optical frequency standard. The frequency of a cavity-stabilized laser is locked to the saturated fluorescence in a thermal Sr atomic beam and is measured with an optical-frequency comb-generator referenced to the SI second through a GPS signal. The $^{88}$Sr transition is measured to be at 434 829 121 311 (10) kHz. We measure also the $^{88}$Sr-$^{86}$Sr isotope shift to be 163 817.4 (0.2) kHz.

Cooling atoms in an optical trap by selective parametric excitation

We demonstrate the possibility of energy-selective removal of cold atoms from a tight optical trap by means of parametric excitation of the trap vibrational modes. Taking advantage of the anharmonicity of the trap potential, we selectively remove the most energetic trapped atoms or excite those at the bottom of the trap by tuning the parametric modulation frequency. This process, which had been previously identified as a possible source of heating, also appears to be a robust way for forcing evaporative cooling in anharmonic traps.

Anharmonic parametric excitation in optical lattices

We study both experimentally and theoretically the losses induced by parametric excitation in far-off-resonance optical lattices. The atoms confined in a 1D sinusoidal lattice present an excitation spectrum and dynamics substantially different from those expected for a harmonic potential. We develop a model based on the actual atomic Hamiltonian in the lattice and we introduce semiempirically a broadening of the width of lattice energy bands which can physically arise from inhomogeneities and fluctuations of the lattice, and also from atomic collisions. The position and strength of the parametric resonances and the evolution of the number of trapped atoms are satisfactorily described by our model.
