Two-Component Fractional Quantum Hall Effect in the Half-Filled Lowest Landau Level in an Asymmetric Wide Quantum Well

We investigate theoretically the fractional quantum Hall effect at half-filling in the lowest Landau level observed in asymmetric wide quantum wells. The asymmetry can be achieved by a potential bias applied between the two sides of the well. Within exact-diagonalization calculations in the spherical geometry, we find that the incompressible state is described in terms of a two-component wave function. Its overlap with the ground state can be optimized with the help of a rotation in the space of the pseudospin, which mimics the lowest two electronic subbands.

The single-mode approximation for fractional Chern insulators and the fractional quantum Hall effect on the torus

We analyze the collective magneto-roton excitations of bosonic Laughlin $ν=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states on the torus and of their analog on the lattice, the fractional Chern insulators (FCIs). We show that, by applying the appropriate mapping of momentum quantum numbers between the two systems, the magneto-roton mode can be identified in FCIs and that it contains the same number of states as in the FQH case. Further, we numerically test the single mode approximation to the magneto-roton mode for both the FQH and FCI case. This proves particularly challenging for the FCI, because its eigenstates have a lower translational symmetry than the FQH states. In spite of this, we construct the FCI single-mode approximation such that it carries the same momenta as the FQH states, allowing for a direct comparison between the two systems. We show that the single-mode approximation captures well a dispersive subset of the magneto-roton excitations both for the FQH and the FCI case. We find remarkable quantitative agreement between the two systems. For example, the many-body excitation gap extrapolates to almost the same value in the thermodynamic limit.

$\mathbb Z_2$ fractional topological insulators in two dimensions

We propose a simple microscopic model to numerically investigate the stability of a two dimensional fractional topological insulator (FTI). The simplest example of a FTI consists of two decoupled copies of a Laughlin state with opposite chiralities. We focus on bosons at half filling. We study the stability of the FTI phase upon addition of two coupling terms of different nature: an interspin interaction term, and an inversion symmetry breaking term that couples the copies at the single particle level. Using exact diagonalization and entanglement spectra, we numerically show that the FTI phase is stable against both perturbations. We compare our system to a similar bilayer fractional Chern insulator. We show evidence that the time reversal invariant system survives the introduction of interaction coupling on a larger scale than the time reversal symmetry breaking one, stressing the importance of time reversal symmetry in the FTI phase stability. We also discuss possible fractional phases beyond $ν= 1/2$.

The brighter-fatter effect and pixel correlations in CCD sensors

We present evidence that spots imaged using astronomical CCDs do not exactly scale with flux: bright spots tend to be broader than faint ones, using the same illumination pattern. We measure that the linear size of spots or stars, of typical size 3 to 4 pixels FWHM, increase linearly with their flux by up to $2\%$ over the full CCD dynamic range. This brighter-fatter effect affects both deep-depleted and thinned CCD sensors. We propose that this effect is a direct consequence of the distortions of the drift electric field sourced by charges accumulated within the CCD during the exposure and experienced by forthcoming light-induced charges in the same exposure. The pixel boundaries then become slightly dynamical: overfilled pixels become increasingly smaller than their neighbors, so that bright star sizes, measured in number of pixels, appear larger than those of faint stars. This interpretation of the brighter-fatter effect implies that pixels in flat-fields should exhibit statistical correlations, sourced by Poisson fluctuations, that we indeed directly detect. We propose to use the measured correlations in flat-fields to derive how pixel boundaries shift under the influence of a given charge pattern, which allows us to quantitatively predict how star shapes evolve with flux. This physical model of the brighter-fatter effect also explains the commonly observed phenomenon that the spatial variance of CCD flat-fields increases less rapidly than their average.

Fractional Quantum Hall Matrix Product States For Interacting Conformal Field Theories

Using truncated conformal field theory (CFT), we present the formalism necessary to obtain exact matrix product state (MPS) representations for any fractional quantum hall model state which can be written as an expectation value of primary fields in some conformal field theory. The auxiliary bond space is the Hilbert space of the descendants of primary fields and matrix elements can be calculated using well-known CFT commutation relations. We obtain a site-independent MPS representation on the thin annulus and cylinder, while a site-dependent representation is possible on the disk and sphere geometries. We discuss the complications that arise due to the presence of null vectors in the theory's Hilbert space, and present an array of procedures which optimize the numerical calculation of matrix elements. By truncating the Hilbert space of the CFT, we then build an approximate MPS representation for Laughlin, Moore-Read, Read-Rezayi, Gaffnian, minimal $M(3,r+2)$ models, and a series of superconformal minimal models. We show how to obtain, in the MPS representation, the Orbital, Particle, and Real Space entanglement spectrum in both the finite and infinite systems.

On the geometrical description of fractional Chern insulators based on static structure factor calculations

We study the static structure factor of the fractional Chern insulator Laughlin-like state and provide analytical forms for this quantity in the long-distance limit. In the course of this we identify averaged over Brillouin zone Fubini Study metric as the relevant metric in the long-distance limit. We discuss under which conditions the static structure factor will assume the usual behavior of Laughlin-like fractional quantum Hall system i.e. the scenario of Girvin, MacDonald, and Platzman [Phys. Rev. B 33, 2481 (1986)]. We study the influence of the departure of the averaged over Brillouin zone Fubini Study metric from its fractional quantum Hall value which appears in the long-distance analysis as an effective change of the filling factor. According to our exact diagonalization results on the Haldane model and analytical considerations we find persistence of fractional Chern insulator state even in this region of the parameter space.

Haldane Statistics for Fractional Chern Insulators with an Arbitrary Chern number

In this paper we provide analytical counting rules for the ground states and the quasiholes of fractional Chern insulators with an arbitrary Chern number. We first construct pseudopotential Hamiltonians for fractional Chern insulators. We achieve this by mapping the lattice problem to the lowest Landau level of a multicomponent continuum quantum Hall system with specially engineered boundary conditions. We then analyze the thin-torus limit of the pseudopotential Hamiltonians, and extract counting rules (generalized Pauli principles, or Haldane statistics) for the degeneracy of its zero modes in each Bloch momentum sector.

Two superluminous supernovae from the early universe discovered by the Supernova Legacy Survey

We present spectra and lightcurves of SNLS 06D4eu and SNLS 07D2bv, two hydrogen-free superluminous supernovae discovered by the Supernova Legacy Survey. At z = 1.588, SNLS 06D4eu is the highest redshift superluminous SN with a spectrum, at M_U = -22.7 is one of the most luminous SNe ever observed, and gives a rare glimpse into the restframe ultraviolet where these supernovae put out their peak energy. SNLS 07D2bv does not have a host galaxy redshift, but based on the supernova spectrum, we estimate it to be at z ~ 1.5. Both supernovae have similar observer-frame griz lightcurves, which map to restframe lightcurves in the U-band and UV, rising in ~ 20 restframe days or longer, and declining over a similar timescale. The lightcurves peak in the shortest wavelengths first, consistent with an expanding blackbody starting near 15,000 K and steadily declining in temperature. We compare the spectra to theoretical models, and identify lines of C II, C III, Fe III, and Mg II in the spectrum of SNLS 06D4eu and SCP 06F6, and find that they are consistent with an expanding explosion of only a few solar masses of carbon, oxygen, and other trace metals. Thus the progenitors appear to be related to those suspected for SNe Ic. A high kinetic energy, 10^52 ergs, is also favored. Normal mechanisms of powering core- collapse or thermonuclear supernovae do not seem to work for these supernovae. We consider models powered by 56Ni decay and interaction with circumstellar material, but find that the creation and spin-down of a magnetar with a period of 2ms, magnetic field of 2 x 10^14 Gauss, and a 3 solar mass progenitor provides the best fit to the data.

Fractional quantum Hall states in charge-imbalanced bilayer systems

We study the fractional quantum Hall effect in a bilayer with charge-distribution imbalance induced, for instance, by a bias gate voltage. The bilayer can either be intrinsic or it can be formed spontaneously in wide quantum wells, due to the Coulomb repulsion between electrons. We focus on fractional quantum Hall effect in asymmetric bilayer systems at filling factor nu=4/11 and show that an asymmetric Halperin-like trial wavefunction gives a valid description of the ground state of the system.

Photometry of supernovae in an image series : methods and application to the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS)

We present a technique to measure lightcurves of time-variable point sources on a spatially structured background from imaging data. The technique was developed to measure light curves of SNLS supernovae in order to infer their distances. This photometry technique performs simultaneous PSF photometry at the same sky position on an image series. We describe two implementations of the method: one that resamples images before measuring fluxes, and one which does not. In both instances, we sketch the key algorithms involved and present the validation using semi-artificial sources introduced in real images in order to assess the accuracy of the supernova flux measurements relative to that of surrounding stars. We describe the methods required to anchor these PSF fluxes to calibrated aperture catalogs, in order to derive SN magnitudes. We find a marginally significant bias of 2 mmag of the after-resampling method, and no bias at the mmag accuracy for the non-resampling method. Given surrounding star magnitudes, we determine the systematic uncertainty of SN magnitudes to be less than 1.5 mmag, which represents about one third of the current photometric calibration uncertainty affecting SN measurements. The SN photometry delivers several by-products: bright star PSF flux mea- surements which have a repeatability of about 0.6%, as for aperture measurements; we measure relative astrometric positions with a noise floor of 2.4 mas for a single-image bright star measurement; we show that in all bands of the MegaCam instrument, stars exhibit a profile linearly broadening with flux by about 0.5% over the whole brightness range.

Matrix Product States for Trial Quantum Hall States

We obtain an exact matrix-product-state (MPS) representation of a large series of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states in various geometries of genus 0. The states in question include all paired k=2 Jack polynomials, such as the Moore-Read and Gaffnian states, as well as the Read-Rezayi k=3 state. We also outline the procedures through which the MPS of other model FQH states can be obtained, provided their wavefunction can be written as a correlator in a 1+1 conformal field theory (CFT). The auxiliary Hilbert space of the MPS, which gives the counting of the entanglement spectrum, is then simply the Hilbert space of the underlying CFT. This formalism enlightens the link between entanglement spectrum and edge modes. Properties of model wavefunctions such as the thin-torus root partitions and squeezing are recast in the MPS form, and numerical benchmarks for the accuracy of the new MPS prescription in various geometries are provided.

Fractional Chern Insulators beyond Laughlin states

We report the first numerical observation of composite fermion (CF) states in fractional Chern insulators (FCI) using exact diagonalization. The ruby lattice Chern insulator model for both fermions and bosons exhibits a clear signature of CF states at filling factors 2/5 and 3/7 (2/3 and 3/4 for bosons). The topological properties of these states are studied through several approaches. Quasihole and quasielectron excitations in FCI display similar features as their fractional quantum hall (FQH) counterparts. The entanglement spectrum of FCI groundstates shows an identical fingerprint to its FQH partner. We show that the correspondence between FCI and FQH obeys the emergent symmetry already established, proving the validity of this approach beyond the clustered states. We investigate other Chern insulator models and find similar signatures of CF states. However, some of these systems exhibit strong finite size effects.

Series of Abelian and Non-Abelian States in C>1 Fractional Chern Insulators

We report the observation of a new series of Abelian and non-Abelian topological states in fractional Chern insulators (FCI). The states appear at bosonic filling nu= k/(C+1) (k, C integers) in several lattice models, in fractionally filled bands of Chern numbers C>=1 subject to on-site Hubbard interactions. We show strong evidence that the k=1 series is Abelian while the k>1 series is non-Abelian. The energy spectrum at both groundstate filling and upon the addition of quasiholes shows a low-lying manifold of states whose total degeneracy and counting matches, at the appropriate size, that of the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) SU(C) (color) singlet k-clustered states (including Halperin, non-Abelian spin singlet states and their generalizations). The groundstate momenta are correctly predicted by the FQH to FCI lattice folding. However, the counting of FCI states also matches that of a spinless FQH series, preventing a clear identification just from the energy spectrum. The entanglement spectrum lends support to the identification of our states as SU(C) color-singlets but offers new anomalies in the counting for C>1, possibly related to dislocations that call for the development of new counting rules of these topological states.

Microscopic model for the boson integer quantum Hall effect

In two dimensions strongly interacting bosons in a magnetic field can form an integer quantum Hall state. This state has a bulk gap, no fractional charges or topological order in the bulk but nevertheless has quantized Hall transport and symmetry protected edge excitations. Here we study a simple microscopic model for such a state in a system of two component bosons in a strong orbital magnetic field. We show through exact diagonalization calculations that the model supports the boson integer quantum Hall ground state in a range of parameters.

Bloch Model Wavefunctions and Pseudopotentials for All Fractional Chern Insulators

We introduce a Bloch-like basis in a C-component lowest Landau level fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect, which entangles the real and internal degrees of freedom and preserves an Nx x Ny full lattice translational symmetry. We implement the Haldane pseudopotential Hamiltonians in this new basis. Their ground states are the model FQH wave functions, and our Bloch basis allows for a mutatis mutandis transcription of these model wave functions to the fractional Chern insulator of arbitrary Chern number C, obtaining wave functions different from all previous proposals. For C > 1, our wave functions are related to color-dependent magnetic-flux inserted versions of Halperin and non-Abelian color-singlet states. We then provide large-size numerical results for both the C = 1 and C = 3 cases. This new approach leads to improved overlaps compared to previous proposals. We also discuss the adiabatic continuation from the fractional Chern insulator to the FQH in our Bloch basis, both from the energy and the entanglement spectrum perspectives.

Emergent Many-Body Translational Symmetries of Abelian and Non-Abelian Fractionally Filled Topological Insulators

The energy and entanglement spectrum of fractionally filled interacting topological insulators exhibit a peculiar manifold of low energy states separated by a gap from a high energy set of spurious states. In the current manuscript, we show that in the case of fractionally filled Chern insulators, the topological information of the many-body state developing in the system resides in this low-energy manifold. We identify an emergent many-body translational symmetry which allows us to separate the states in quasi-degenerate center of mass momentum sectors. Within one center of mass sector, the states can be further classified as eigenstates of an emergent (in the thermodynamic limit) set of many-body relative translation operators. We analytically establish a mapping between the two-dimensional Brillouin zone for the Fractional Quantum Hall effect on the torus and the one for the fractional Chern insulator. We show that the counting of quasi-degenerate levels below the gap for the Fractional Chern Insulator should arise from a folding of the states in the Fractional Quantum Hall system at identical filling factor. We show how to count and separate the excitations of the Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi series in the Fractional Quantum Hall effect into two-dimensional Brillouin zone momentum sectors, and then how to map these into the momentum sectors of the Fractional Chern Insulator. We numerically check our results by showing the emergent symmetry at work for Laughlin, Moore-Read and Read-Rezayi states on the checkerboard model of a Chern insulator, thereby also showing, as a proof of principle, that non-Abelian Fractional Chern Insulators exist.

D-Algebra Structure of Topological Insulators

In the quantum Hall effect, the density operators at different wave-vectors generally do not commute and give rise to the Girvin MacDonald Plazmann (GMP) algebra with important consequences such as ground-state center of mass degeneracy at fractional filling fraction, and W_{1 + \infty} symmetry of the filled Landau levels. We show that the natural generalization of the GMP algebra to higher dimensional topological insulators involves the concept of a D-algebra formed by using the fully anti-symmetric tensor in D-dimensions. For insulators in even dimensional space, the D-algebra is isotropic and closes for the case of constant non-Abelian F(k) ^ F(k) ... ^ F(k) connection (D-Berry curvature), and its structure factors are proportional to the D/2-Chern number. In odd dimensions, the algebra is not isotropic, contains the weak topological insulator index (layers of the topological insulator in one less dimension) and does not contain the Chern-Simons θform (F ^ A - 2/3 A ^ A ^ A in 3 dimensions). The Chern-Simons form appears in a certain combination of the parallel transport and simple translation operator which is not an algebra. The possible relation to D-dimensional volume preserving diffeomorphisms and parallel transport of extended objects is also discussed.

Fractional Chern Insulator

Chern insulators are band insulators exhibiting a nonzero Hall conductance but preserving the lattice translational symmetry. We conclusively show that a partially filled Chern insulator at 1/3 filling exhibits a fractional quantum Hall effect and rule out charge-density wave states that have not been ruled out by previous studies. By diagonalizing the Hubbard interaction in the flat-band limit of these insulators, we show the following: The system is incompressible and has a 3-fold degenerate ground state whose momenta can be computed by postulating an generalized Pauli principle with no more than 1 particle in 3 consecutive orbitals. The ground state density is constant, and equal to 1/3 in momentum space. Excitations of the system are fractional statistics particles whose total counting matches that of quasiholes in the Laughlin state based on the same generalized Pauli principle. The entanglement spectrum of the state has a clear entanglement gap which seems to remain finite in the thermodynamic limit. The levels below the gap exhibit counting identical to that of Laughlin 1/3 quasiholes. Both the 3 ground states and excited states exhibit spectral flow upon flux insertion. All the properties above disappear in the trivial state of the insulator - both the many-body energy gap and the entanglement gap close at the phase transition when the single-particle Hamiltonian goes from topologically nontrivial to topologically trivial. These facts clearly show that fractional many-body states are possible in topological insulators.
