A Flow Equation Approach Striving Towards an Energy-Separating Hamiltonian Unitary Equivalent to the Dirac Hamiltonian with Coupling to Electromagnetic Fields

The Dirac Hamiltonian $H^{\left(D\right)}$ for relativistic charged fermions minimally coupled to (possibly time-dependent) electromagnetic fields is transformed with a purpose-built flow equation method, so that the result of that transformation is unitary equivalent to $H^{\left(D\right)}$ and granted to strive towards a limiting value $H^{\left(NW\right)}$ commuting with the Dirac $β$-matrix. Upon expansion of $H^{\left(NW\right)}$ to order $\frac{v^2}{c^2}$ the nonrelativistic Hamiltonian $H^{\left(SP\right)}$ of Schrödinger-Pauli quantum mechanics emerges as the leading order term adding to the rest energy $mc^2$. All the relativistic corrections to $H^{\left(SP\right)}$ are explicitly taken into account in the guise of a Magnus type series expansion, the series coefficients generated to order $\left(\frac{v^{2}}{c^{2}}\right)^{n}$ for $n\geq2$ comprising partial sums of iterated commutators only. In the special case of static fields the equivalence of the flow equation method with the well known energy-separating unitary transformation of Eriksen is established on the basis of an exact solution of a reverse flow equation transforming the $β$-matrix into the energy-sign operator associated with $H^{\left(D\right)}$. That way the identity $H^{\left(NW\right)}=β\sqrt{H^{\left(NW\right)}H^{\left(NW\right)}}$ is established implying $H^{\left(NW\right)}$ being determined unambiguously.

Cold Bose Atoms Around the Crossing of Quantum Waveguides

We show that massive low energy particles traversing a branching zone or a crossing of quantum waveguides may experience a non standard trapping force that cannot be derived from a potential. For interacting cold Bose atoms we report on the formation of a localised Hartree ground state for three prototype waveguide geometries with broken translational symmetry: a cranked L-shaped waveguide L, a T-shaped waveguide T, and the crossing C of two quantum waveguides. The phenomenon is kinetic energy driven and cannot be described within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Depending on the ratio of joining lateral tube diameters of the respective waveguides C,L,T delocalisation commences when the particle number N approaches a critical value. For the case of a binary mixture of two different Bose atom species A and B we observe non standard trapping of both atom species for subcritical particle numbers. A sudden demixing quantum transition takes place as the total particle number N=N_{A}+N_{B} is increased at fixed mixing ratio N_{A}/N_{B}. Depending on the mass ratio m_{A}/m_{B} the heavier atom species delocalises first for a wide range of interaction parameters. The numerical calculations are based on a splitting scheme involving an analytic approximation to the short time asymptotics of the imaginary time quantum propagator of a single particle obeying to Dirichlet boundary conditions at the walls inside the respective waveguides.

Strong surface contribution to the Nonlinear Meissner Effect

We demonstrate that in a d-wave superconductor the bulk nonlinear Meissner effect is dominated by a surface effect due to Andreev bound states at low temperatures. The contribution of this surface effect to the nonlinear response coefficient follows a 1/T^3 law with opposite sign compared to the bulk 1/T behavior. The cross-over from bulk dominated behavior to surface dominated behavior occurs at a temperature of T/T_c ~ 1/sqrt(kappa). We present an approximate analytical calculation, which supports our numerical calculations and provides a qualitative understanding of the effect. The effect can be probed by intermodulation distortion experiments.

Phase diagram of geometric d-wave superconductor Josephson junctions

We show that a constriction-type Josephson junction realized by an epitactic thin film of a d-wave superconductor with an appropriate boundary geometry exhibits intrinsic phase differences between 0 and pi depending on geometric parameters and temperature. Based on microscopic Eilenberger theory, we provide a general derivation of the relation between the change of the free energy of the junction and the current-phase relation. From the change of the free energy, we calculate phase diagrams and discuss transitions driven by geometric parameters and temperature.

Geometric pi Josephson junction: Current-phase relations and critical current

Josephson junctions with an intrinsic phase shift of pi, so-called pi Josephson junctions, can be realized by a weak link of a d-wave superconductor with an appropriate boundary geometry. A model for the pairing potential of an according weak link is introduced which allows for the calculation of the influence of geometric parameters and temperature. From this model, current-phase relations and the critical current of the device are derived. The range of validity of the model is determined by comparison with selfconsistent solutions.

Modification of Born impurity scattering near the surface of d-wave superconductors and influence of external magnetic field

We study the influence of Born impurity scattering on the zero-energy Andreev bound states near the surface of a d-wave superconductor with and without an externally applied magnetic field. Without an external magnetic field we show that the effect of Born impurity scattering is stronger at the surface than in the bulk. In the presence of an external magnetic field the splitting of the zero-energy Andreev bound states is shown to have a nonmonotonous temperature dependence. Born impurity scattering does not wash out the peak splitting, but instead the peak splitting is shown to be quite robust against impurities. We also show that a nonzero gap renormalization appears near the surface.

Effect of Surface Andreev Bound States on the Bean-Livingston Barrier in d-Wave Superconductors

We study the influence of surface Andreev bound states in d-wave superconductors on the Bean-Livingston surface barrier for entry of a vortex line into a strongly type-II superconductor. Starting from Eilenberger theory we derive a generalization of London theory to incorporate the anomalous surface currents arising from the Andreev bound states. This allows us to find an analytical expression for the modification of the Bean-Livingston barrier in terms of a single parameter describing the influence of the Andreev bound states. We find that the field of first vortex entry is significantly enhanced. Also, the depinning field for vortices near the surface is renormalized. Both effects are temperature dependent and depend on the orientation of the surface relative to the d-wave gap function.

Andreev bound states at a cuprate grain boundary junction: A lower bound for the upper critical field

We investigate in-plane quasiparticle tunneling across thin film grain boundary junctions (GBJs) of the electron-doped cuprate La$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ in magnetic fields up to $B=16 $T, perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ layers. The differential conductance in the superconducting state shows a zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) due to zero energy surface Andreev bound states. With increasing temperature $T$, the ZBCP vanishes at the critical temperature $T_c\approx29 $K if B=0, and at $T=12 $K for B=16 T. As the ZBCP is related to the macroscopic phase coherence of the superconducting state, we argue that the disappearance of the ZBCP at a field $B_{ZBCP}(T)$ must occur below the upper critical field $B_{c2}(T)$ of the superconductor. We find $B_{ZBCP}(0) \approx 25 $T which is at least a factor of 2.5 higher than previous estimates of $B_{c2}(0)$.

Geometric pi Josephson junction in d-wave superconducting thin films

A novel way to realize a pi Josephson junction is proposed, based on a weak link in an unconventional d-wave superconductor with appropriately chosen boundary geometry. The critical current of such a junction is calculated from a fully selfconsistent solution of microscopic Eilenberger theory of superconductivity. The results clearly show, that a transition to a pi Josephson junction occurs for both low temperatures and small sizes of the geometry.

Microscopic Theory of Superconductor-Constriction-Superconductor Josephson Junctions in a Magnetic Field

Self-consistent solutions of microscopic Eilenberger theory are presented for a two-dimensional model of a superconducting channel with a geometric constriction. Magnetic fields, external ones as well as those caused by the supercurrents, are included and the relevant equations are solved numerically without further assumptions. Results concerning the influence of temperature, geometric parameters, of $κ=λ_L/ξ_0$ and of external magnetic fields on the Andreev bound states in the weak link and on the current-phase relation are presented. We find that the Andreev bound states within the junction obtain peculiar substructure when a finite supercurrent flows. As long as the London penetration depth is comparable to or bigger than the extension of the constriction, the Josephson effect is independent of $κ$. Furthermore, the weak link is very insensitive to external magnetic fields. Features restricted to a self-consistent calculation are discussed.

Two tone response in Superconducting Quantum Interference Filters

We successfully exploit the parabolic shape of the dc voltage output dip around B=0 of a Superconducting Quantum Interference Filter (SQIF) to mix weak external rf signals. The two tone response of weak time harmonic electromagnetic fields has been detected on the spectral voltage output of the SQIF at frequency f_0 = f_1 - f_2, for various frequencies f_1 and f_2 ranging from few MHz up to 20 GHz. The two tone response is a characteristic function of static magnetic field B and of bias current I_b, related to the second derivative of the dc voltage output.

Two tone response of radiofrequency signals using the voltage output of a Superconducting Quantum Interference Filter

In the presence of weak time harmonic electromagnetic fields, Superconducting Quantum Interference Filters (SQIFs) show the typical behavior of non linear mixers. The SQIFs are manufactured from high-T_c grain boundary Josephson junctions and operated in active microcooler. The dependence of dc voltage output V_dc vs. static external magnetic field B is non-periodic and consists of a well pronounced unique dip at zero field, with marginal side modulations at higher fields. We have successfully exploited the parabolic shape of the voltage dip around B=0 to mix quadratically two external time harmonic rf-signals, at frequencies f_1 and f_2 below the Josephson frequency f_J, and detect the corresponding mixing signal at f_1-f_2. When the mixing takes place on the SQIF current-voltage characteristics the component at 2f_2 - f_1 is present. The experiments suggest potential applications of a SQIF as a non-linear mixing device, capable to operate at frequencies from dc to few GHz with a large dynamic range.

Quadratic Mixing of Radio Frequency Signals using Superconducting Quantum Interference Filters

The authors demonstrate quadratic mixing of weak time harmonic electromagnetic fields applied to Superconducting Quantum Interference Filters, manufactured from high-$T_{\mathrm{c}}$ grain boundary Josephson junctions and operated in active microcooler. The authors use the parabolic shape of the dip in the dc-voltage output around B=0 to mix \emph{quadratically} two external rf-signals, at frequencies $f_{\mathrm{1}}$ and $f_{\mathrm{2}}$ well below the Josephson frequency $f_{\mathrm{J}}$, and detect the corresponding mixing signal at $| {f_{1}-f_{2}}| $. Quadratic mixing takes also place when the SQIF is operated without magnetic shield. The experimental results are well described by a simple analytical model based on the adiabatic approximation.

Vortex core shrinkage in a two gap superconductor: application to MgB2

As a model for the vortex core in MgB2 we study a two band model with a clean sigma band and a dirty pi band. We present calculations of the vortex core size in both bands as a function of temperature and show that there exists a Kramer-Pesch effect in both bands even though only one of the bands is in the clean limit. We present calculations for different pi band diffusivities and coherence lengths.

Induced Kramer-Pesch-Effect in a Two Gap Superconductor: Application to MgB2

The size of the vortex core in a clean superconductor is strongly temperature dependent and shrinks with decreasing temperature, decreasing to zero for T -> 0. We study this so-called Kramer-Pesch effect both for a single gap superconductor and for the case of a two gap superconductor using parameters appropriate for Magnesium Diboride. Usually, the Kramer-Pesch effect is absent in the dirty limit. Here, we show that the Kramer-Pesch effect exists in both bands of a two gap superconductor even if only one of the two bands is in the clean limit and the other band in the dirty limit, a case appropriate for MgB2. In this case an induced Kramer-Pesch effect appears in the dirty band. Besides numerical results we also present an analytical model for the spatial variation of the pairing potential in the vicinity of the vortex center that allows a simple calculation of the vortex core radius even in the limit T -> 0.

Local density of states at polygonal boundaries of d-wave superconductors

Besides the well-known existence of Andreev bound states, the zero-energy local density of states at the boundary of a d-wave superconductor strongly depends on the boundary geometry itself. In this work, we examine the influence of both a simple wedge-shaped boundary geometry and a more complicated polygonal or faceted boundary structure on the local density of states. For a wedge-shaped boundary geometry, we find oscillations of the zero-energy density of states in the corner of the wedge, depending on the opening angle of the wedge. Furthermore, we study the influence of a single Abrikosov vortex situated near a boundary, which is of either macroscopic or microscopic roughness.

Observation of Andreev bound states in bicrystal grain-boundary Josephson junctions of the electron doped superconductor LaCeCuO

We observe a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in the ab-plane quasiparticle tunneling spectra of thin film grain-boundary Josephson junctions made of the electron doped cuprate superconductor LaCeCuO. An applied magnetic field reduces the spectral weight around zero energy and shifts it non-linearly to higher energies consistent with a Doppler shift of the Andreev bound states (ABS) energy. For all magnetic fields the ZBCP appears simultaneously with the onset of superconductivity. These observations strongly suggest that the ZBCP results from the formation of ABS at the junction interfaces, and, consequently, that there is a sign change in the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter of this compound consistent with a d-wave symmetry.
