Transport properties and Kohler's rule in $R$$_x$Lu$_{1-x}$B$_{12}$ solid solutions with $x$ $\leq$ 0.03: do charge stripes really exist in metallic dodecaborides?

Nonmagnetic metal LuB$_{12}$ is known to exhibit considerable transport anisotropy, which was explained in literature by different mechanisms including possible formation of dynamic charge stripes below the point $\sim$ 150K. Here we study transport properties of solid solutions based on LuB$_{12}$ host compound with general formula $R$$_x$Lu$_{1-x}$B$_{12}$ ($R$$-$Dy, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) and with $x$ $\leq$ 0.03. The experiment has been performed on single crystals of high quality in the temperature range 1.8 $-$ 300K in magnetic fields up to 82kOe. The application of several models to the analysis of zero-field resistivity is discussed. A phenomenological description of large positive quadratic component of transverse magnetoresistance $Δ$$ρ$/$ρ$($H$) = $μ_D^2$$H^2$, which dominates for all compounds under investigation, allows to estimate drift mobility exponential changes $μ_D$ $\sim$ $T^{-α}$ with the index $α$ $\approx$ 0.95 $-$ 1.46. In order to check the existence of additional channel of scattering, caused by probable presence of dynamic charge stripes, we performed the study of the anisotropy of magnetoresistance in Dy$_{0.01}$Lu$_{0.99}$B$_{12}$ and Tm$_{0.03}$Lu$_{0.97}$B$_{12}$ compositions including the measurements of the field scans with different current and field geometries. The data obtained allow us to confirm the fulfillment of semi-empirical Kohler's rule in a wide interval of temperatures 30 $-$ 240K regardless of the orientation of current and magnetic field. This result was attributed as a proof of the absence of additional channel of scattering caused by stripes. We argue, that charge-transport anisotropy is originated in $R$$_x$Lu$_{1-x}$B$_{12}$ due to the anisotropy of electron-phonon scattering on the one hand and the effects of Fermi surface (FS) topology (at low temperatures) on the other.

Evidence of symmetry lowering in antiferromagnetic metal TmB12 with dynamic charge stripes

Precise angle-resolved magnetoresistance and magnetization measurements have revealed (i) strong charge transport and magnetic anisotropy and (ii) emergence of a huge number of magnetic phases in the ground state of TmB12 antiferromagnetic metal with fcc crystal structure and dynamic charge stripes. By analyzing the angular H-fi magnetic phase diagrams reconstructed from experimental angle-resolved magnetoresistance and magnetization data we argue that the symmetry lowering is a consequence of suppression of the indirect Ruderman- Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange along 110 directions between nearest neighboring magnetic moments of Tm3+ ions and subsequent redistribution of conduction electrons to quantum fluctuations of the electron density (stripes). Magnetoresistance components are discussed in terms of charge scattering on the spin density wave, itinerant ferromagnetic nano-domains and on-site Tm3+ spin fluctuations.

$f$-electron hybridised metallic Fermi surface in magnetic field-induced metallic YbB$_{12}$

The nature of the Fermi surface observed in the recently discovered family of unconventional insulators starting with SmB$_6$ and subsequently YbB$_{12}$ is a subject of intense inquiry. Here we shed light on this question by comparing quantum oscillations between the high magnetic field-induced metallic regime in YbB$_{12}$ and the unconventional insulating regime. In the field-induced metallic regime beyond 47 T, we find prominent quantum oscillations in the contactless resistivity characterised by multiple frequencies up to at least 3000 T and heavy effective masses up to at least 17 $m_\text{e}$, characteristic of an $f$-electron hybridised metallic Fermi surface. The growth of quantum oscillation amplitude at low temperatures in electrical transport and magnetic torque in insulating YbB$_{12}$ is closely similar to the Lifshitz-Kosevich low temperature growth of quantum oscillation amplitude in field-induced metallic YbB$_{12}$, pointing to an origin of quantum oscillations in insulating YbB$_{12}$ from in-gap neutral low energy excitations. The field-induced metallic regime of YbB$_{12}$ is characterised by more Fermi surface sheets of heavy quasiparticle effective mass that emerge in addition to the heavy Fermi surface sheets yielding multiple quantum oscillation frequencies below 1000 T observed in both insulating and metallic regimes. We thus observe a heavy multi-component Fermi surface in which $f$-electron hybridisation persists from the unconventional insulating to the field-induced metallic regime of YbB$_{12}$, which is in distinct contrast to the unhybridised conduction electron Fermi surface observed in the case of the unconventional insulator SmB$_6$. Our findings require a different theoretical model of neutral in-gap low energy excitations in which the $f$-electron hybridisation is retained in the case of the unconventional insulator YbB$_{12}$.

Inhomogeneous superconductivity in LuxZr1-xB12 dodecaborides with dynamic charge stripes

We have studied the normal and superconductive state characteristics (resistivity, Hall coefficient, heat capacity and magnetization) of model strongly correlated electronic systems LuxZr1-xB12 with cooperative Jahn-Teller instability of the boron rigid cage and with dynamic charge stripes. It was found that these metals are s-wave dirty limit superconductors with a small mean free path of charge carriers l = 5 - 140 A and with a Cooper pair size changing non-monotonously in the range 450 - 4000 A. The parent ZrB12 and LuB12 borides are type-I superconductors, and Zr to Lu substitution induces a type-I - type-II phase transition providing a variation of the Ginzburg-Landau-Maki parameter in the limits 0.65 < kappa1,2 < 6. We argue in favor of the two-band scenario of superconductivity in LuxZr1-xB12 with gap values Delta_1 ~ 14 K and Delta_2 ~ 6 - 8 K, with pairing corresponding to strong coupling limit (lambda_e-ph ~ 1) in the upper band, and to weak coupling (lambda_e-ph ~ 0.1 - 0.4) in the lower one. A pseudogap Delta_ps-gap ~ 60 - 110 K is observed in LuxZr1-xB12 above Tc. We discuss also the possibility of anisotropic single-band superconductivity with stripe-induced both pair-breaking and anisotropy, and analyze the origin of unique enhanced surface superconductivity detected in these model compounds.

Hall effect and symmetry breaking in non-magnetic metal with dynamic charge stripes

A comprehensive study of magnetoresistance and Hall effect has been performed for the set of the single crystals of non-magnetic metal LuB12 with the Jahn-Teller instability of the boron cage and dynamic charge stripes forming along <110> direction. Anomalous positive contribution to Hall effect for particular direction of magnetic field H//[001] is found in the single crystals of LuB12 of the highest quality. This contribution arising at T~ 150 K is shown to increase drastically when approaching the disordered ground state below 60 K. The Hall effect anomaly is shown to appear in combination with the peak of magnetoresistance. The various scenarios allowing for the topology of Fermi surface, anisotropy of relaxation time for charge carriers and the filamentary structure of fluctuating charge stripes are proposed to explain the features of magnetotransport in this metal with inhomogeneous distribution of electron density. The origin of SdH oscillations, which are observed in this non-equilibrium metal with electron phase separation and strong charge carrier scattering, is discussed.

Suppression of indirect exchange and symmetry breaking in antiferromagnetic metal with dynamic charge stripes

Precise angle-resolved magnetoresistance (ARM) measurements are applied to reveal the origin for the lowering of symmetry in electron transport and the emergence of a huge number of magnetic phases in the ground state of antiferromagnetic metal HoB12 with fcc crystal structure. By analyzing of the polar H-theta-phi magnetic phase diagrams of this compound reconstructed from the experimental ARM data we argue that non-equilibrium electron density oscillations (dynamic charge stripes) are responsible for the suppression of the indirect RKKY exchange along <110> directions between the nearest neighboring magnetic moments of Ho3+ ions in this strongly correlated electron system.

Low-temperature infrared spectroscopy of Tm0.19Yb0.81B12 dodecaboride with metal-insulator transition and dynamic charge stripes

Tm1-xYbxB12 dodecaborides represent model objects for the studies of quantum critical behavior, metal-insulator transition and complex charge-spin-orbital-phonon coupling phenomena. In spite of intensive investigations, the mechanism of the ground state formation in this strongly correlated electron system remains a subject of active debates. We have performed first systematic measurements of temperature-dependent spectra of infrared conductivity of Tm0.19Yb0.81B12 at frequencies 40-35000 cm-1 and in the temperature interval from 300 K down to 10 K. Analysis of the temperature evolution of the observed absorption resonances is performed. Their origin is associated with the Jahn-Teller instability in the cubic lattice which results in the rattling modes of the rare earth ions and leads to emergence of both the intra-gap mixed-type collective excitations and the dynamic charge stripes. Temperature dependent effective mass of charge carriers is determined and a picture is presented of the multiple relaxation channels and the transformation of the manybody states at different temperatures. We argue in favor of electronic phase separation scenario which is valid both for the metal-insulator transition and for the formation of the nanoscale filamentary structure in Tm1-xYbxB12 compounds.

Fermi surface in the absence of a Fermi liquid in the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$

The search for a Fermi surface in the absence of a conventional Fermi liquid has thus far yielded very few potential candidates. Among promising materials are spin-frustrated Mott insulators near the insulator-metal transition, where theory predicts a Fermi surface associated with neutral low energy excitations. Here we reveal another route to experimentally realise a Fermi surface in the absence of a Fermi liquid by the experimental study of a Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ positioned close to the insulator-metal transition. We present experimental signatures down to low temperatures ($\ll 1$ K) associated with a Fermi surface in the bulk, including a sizeable linear specific heat coefficient, and on the application of a finite magnetic field, bulk magnetic quantum oscillations, finite quantum oscillatory entropy, and substantial enhancement in thermal conductivity well below the charge gap energy scale. Thus, the weight of evidence indicates that despite an extreme instance of Fermi liquid breakdown in Kondo insulating SmB$_6$, a Fermi surface arises from novel itinerant low energy excitations that couple to magnetic fields, but not weak DC electric fields.

Rattling mode and symmetry lowering resulting from instability of B$_{12}$-molecule in LuB$_{12}$

The dodecaboride LuB$_{12}$ with cage-glass state and rattling modes has been studied to clarify the nature of the large amplitude vibrations of Lu ions. Discovered anisotropy of charge transport in conjunction with distortions of the conventional \textit{fcc} symmetry of the crystal lattice may be attributed to coherent motion of Lu ions along singular direction in the lattice. Arguments are presented in favor of cooperative dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the boron sublattice to be the reason of the rattling mode, lattice distortion and formation of the filamentary structure of the conductive channels.

Lattice instability and enhancement of superconductivity in YB$_6$

The superconducting and normal state characteristics of yttrium hexaboride (YB$_6$) have been investigated for the single crystals with a transition temperatures $T_c$ ranging between 6 K and 7.6 K. The extracted set of microscopic parameters [the coherence length $ξ$(0) $\sim$ 320$÷$340 $Å$, the penetration depth $λ$(0) $\sim$ 1100$÷$1600 $Å$ and the mean free path of charge carriers $l$ = 31$÷$58 $Å$, the Ginzburg-Landau-Maki parameters $κ$$_{1,2}$(0) $\sim$ 3.3$÷$4.8 and the superconducting gap $Δ$(0) $\sim$ 10.3$÷$14.8 K] confirms the type II superconductivity in "dirty limit" ($ξ$$\gg$ $l$) with a medium to strong electron-phonon interaction (the electron-phonon interaction constant $λ_{e-ph}$ = 0.93$÷$0.96) and $s$-type pairing of charge carriers in this compound [2$Δ$(0)$/k_BT_c$ $\approx$ 4]. The comparative analysis of charge transport (resistivity, Hall and Seebeck coefficients) and thermodynamic (heat capacity, magnetization) properties in the normal state in YB$_6$ allowed to detect a transition into the cage-glass state at $T^*$ $\sim$ 50 K with a static disorder in the arrangement of the Y$^{3+}$ ions. We argue that the significant $T_c$ variations in the YB$_6$ single crystals are determined by two main factors: (i) the superconductivity enhancement is related with the increase of the number of isolated vacancies, both at yttrium and boron sites, which leads to the development of an instability in the hexaboride lattice; (ii) the $T_c$ depression is additionally stimulated by the spin polarization of conduction electrons emerged and enhanced by the magnetic field in the vicinity of defect complexes in the YB$_6$ matrix.

Fractional magnetization plateaus and magnetic order in the Shastry Sutherland magnet TmB4

We investigate the phase diagram of TmB4, an Ising magnet on a frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice by neutron diffraction and magnetization experiments. At low temperature we find Neel order at low field, ferrimagnetic order at high field and an intermediate phase with magnetization plateaus at fractional values M/Msat = 1/7, 1/8, 1/9 ... and spatial stripe structures. Using an effective S = 1/2 model and its equivalent two-dimensional (2D) fermion gas we suggest that the magnetic properties of TmB4 are related to the fractional quantum Hall effect of a 2D electron gas.

On the importance of the electron-phonon coupling function on the superconducting transition temperature in dodecaboride superconductors: A comparison of LuB12 with ZrB12

We report a detailed study of specific heat, electrical resistivity and optical spectroscopy in the superconducting boride LuB12 (Tc = 0.4 K) and compare it to the higher Tc compound ZrB12 (Tc = 6 K). Both compounds have the same structure based on enclosed metallic Lu or Zr ions in oversized boron cages. The infrared reflectivity and ellipsometry in the visible range allow us to extract the optical conductivity from 6 meV to 4 eV in the normal state from 20 to 280 K. By extracting the superconducting properties, phonon density of states and electron-phonon coupling function from these measurements we discuss the important factors governing Tc and explain the difference between the two compounds. The phonon density of states seems to be insignificantly modified by substitution of Zr with Lu. However, the soft vibrations of the metal ions in boron cages, responsible for the relatively high Tc in ZrB12, have almost no contribution to the electron-phonon coupling in LuB12.

Magnetic structure and phase diagram of TmB4

Magnetic structure of single crystalline TmB4 has been studied by magnetization, magnetoresistivity and specific heat measurements. A complex phase diagram with different antiferromagnetic (AF) phases was observed below TN1 = 11.7 K. Besides the plateau at half-saturated magnetization (1/2 MS), also plateaus at 1/9, 1/8 and 1/7 of MS were observed as function of applied magnetic field B//c. From additional neutron scattering experiments on TmB4, we suppose that those plateaus arise from a stripe structure which appears to be coherent domain boundaries between AF ordered blocks of 7 or 9 lattice constants. The received results suggest that the frustration among the Tm3+ magnetic ions, which maps to a geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice lead to strong competition between AF and ferromagnetic (FM) order. Thus, stripe structures in intermediate field appear to be the best way to minimize the magnetostatic energy against other magnetic interactions between the Tm ions combined with very strong Ising anisotropy.

Anomalous magnetoresistance of EuB$_{5.99}$C$_{0.01}$: Enhancement of magnetoresistance in systems with magnetic polarons

We present results of measurements of electrical, magnetic and thermal properties of EuB$_{5.99}$C$_{0.01}$. The observed anomalously large negative magnetoresistance as above, so below the Curie temperature of ferromagnetic ordering $T_C$ is attributed to fluctuations in carbon concentration. Below $T_C$ the carbon richer regions give rise to helimagnetic domains, which are responsible for an additional scattering term in the resistivity, which can be suppressed by a magnetic field. Above $T_C$ these regions prevent the process of percolation of magnetic polarons (MPs), acting as "spacers" between MPs. We propose that such "spacers", being in fact volumes incompatible with existence of MPs, may be responsible for the decrease of the percolation temperature and for the additional (magneto)resistivity increase in systems with MPs.

Optical properties and electronic structure of ZrB$_{12}$

We report optical (6 meV - 4 eV) properties of a boride superconductor ZrB$_{12}$ ($T_c$ = 6 K) in the normal state from 20 to 300 K measured on high-quality single crystals by a combination of reflectivity and ellipsometry. The Drude plasma frequency and interband optical conductivity calculated by self-consistent full-potential LMTO method agree well with experimental data. The Eliashberg function $α_{tr}^2F(ω)$ extracted from optical spectra features two peaks at about 25 and 80 meV, in agreement with specific heat data. The total coupling constant is $λ_{tr}=1.0\pm0.35$. The low energy peak presumably corresponds to the displacement mode of Zr inside $B_{24}$ cages, while the second one involves largely boron atoms. In addition to the usual narrowing of the Drude peak with cooling down, we observe an unexpected removal of about 10 % of the Drude spectral weight which is partially transferred to the region of the lowest-energy interband transition ($\sim$ 1 eV). This effect may be caused by the delocalization of the metal ion from the center of the $B_{24}$ cluster.

Pressure induced softening of YB_6: pressure effect on the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ=λ/ξ

Measurements of the transition temperature T_c, the second critical filed H_{c2} and the magnetic penetration depth λunder hydrostatic pressure (up to 9.2 kbar) in the YB_6 superconductor were carried out. A pronounced and {\it negative} pressure effects (PE) on T_c and H_{c2} with dT_c/dp=-0.0547(4) K/kbar and μ_0dH_{c2}(0)/dp =-4.84(20) mT/kbar, and zero PE on λ(0) were observed. The PE on the coherence length dξ(0)/dp=0.28(2) nm/kbar was calculated from the measured pressure dependence of H_{c2}(0). Together with the zero PE on the magnetic penetration depth λ(0), our results imply that the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ(0)=ξ(0)/λ(0) depends on pressure and that pressure "softens" YB_6, e.g. moves it to the type-I direction.

Anomalous charge transport in dodecaborides RB12 (R- Ho, Er, Tm, Lu)

High precision measurements of Hall RH(T) and Seebeck S(T) coefficients have been carried out for the first time on single crystals of rare earth dodecaborides RB12 (R - Ho, Er, Tm, Lu) at temperatures 1.8 - 300K. Low temperature anomalies associated with antiferromagnetic phase transitions in HoB12, ErB12 and TmB12 compounds have been detected on the temperature dependencies of RH(T) and S(T). The estimated values of charge carriers mobility allowed us to conclude about the appreciable influence of spin fluctuations on the charge transport in these compounds with B12 atomic clusters.

Neutron scattering on HoB$_{12}$ - short-range correlations above T$_{N}$

Neutron scattering experiments on frustrated fcc - antiferromagnet HoB$_{12}$ have been performed above T$_{N}$ = 7.4 K. Diffuse scattering patterns indicate that above Neel temperature correlations between neighboring magnetic moments of Ho - ions appear, similar to the appearance of coupled spin-pairs (dimers) in low dimensional magnets. Moreover, the diffuse patterns show a symmetry reduction from fcc to simple cubic. Analogous behavior in 3D systems is not known, although it was predicted by theory. The role of various interactions leading to this behavior is being analyzed and discussed.
