Concept for a Space-based Near-Solar Neutrino Detector

The concept of putting a neutrino detector in close orbit of the sun has been unexplored until very recently. The primary scientific return is to vastly enhance our understanding of the solar interior, which is a major NASA goal. Preliminary calculations show that such a spacecraft, if properly shielded, can operate in space environments while taking data from neutrino interactions. These interactions can be distinguished from random background rates of solar electromagnetic emissions, galactic charged cosmic-rays, and gamma-rays by using a double pulsed signature. Early simulations of this project have shown this veto schema to be successful in eliminating background and identifying the neutrino interaction signal in upwards of 75% of gamma ray interactions and nearly 100% of other interactions. Hence, we propose a new instrument to explore and study our sun. Due to inverse square scaling, this instrument has the potential to outperform earth-based experiments in several domains such as making measurements not accessible from the earth's orbit.

A Measurement of the Branching Ratio of $π^0$ Dalitz Decay using $K_L \rightarrow π^0π^0π^0$ Decays

We present a measurement of $B(π^0 \rightarrow e^+e^- γ)/B(π^0 \rightarrow γγ)$, the Dalitz branching ratio, using data taken in 1999 by the E832 KTeV experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We use neutral pions from fully reconstructed $K_L$ decays in flight; the measurement is based on about 60 thousand $K_L \rightarrow π^0π^0π^0 \rightarrow γγ~γγ~e^+e^-γ$ decays. We normalize to $K_L \rightarrow π^0π^0π^0 \rightarrow 6γ$ decays. We find $B(π^0 \rightarrow e^+e^- γ)/B(π^0 \rightarrow γγ)$ $(m_{e^+e^-}$ > 15 MeV/$c^2)$ = $[3.920 \pm 0.016(stat) \pm 0.036 (syst)] \times 10^{-3}$. Using the Mikaelian and Smith prediction for the $e^+e^-$ mass spectrum, we correct the result to the full $e^+e^-$ mass range. The corrected result is $B(π^0 \rightarrow e^+e^- γ)/B(π^0 \rightarrow γγ) = [1.1559 \pm 0.0047(stat) \pm 0.0106 (syst)]$%. This result is consistent with previous measurements and the uncertainty is a factor of three smaller than any previous measurement.

Measurement of Charged Pion Production Yields off the NuMI Target

The fixed-target MIPP experiment, Fermilab E907, was designed to measure the production of hadrons from the collisions of hadrons of momenta ranging from 5 to 120 GeV/c on a variety of nuclei. These data will generally improve the simulation of particle detectors and predictions of particle beam fluxes at accelerators. The spectrometer momentum resolution is between 3 and 4%, and particle identification is performed for particles ranging between 0.3 and 80 GeV/c using $dE/dx$, time-of-flight and Cherenkov radiation measurements. MIPP collected $1.42 \times10^6$ events of 120 GeV Main Injector protons striking a target used in the NuMI facility at Fermilab. The data have been analyzed and we present here charged pion yields per proton-on-target determined in bins of longitudinal and transverse momentum between 0.5 and 80 GeV/c, with combined statistical and systematic relative uncertainties between 5 and 10%.

Search for the Rare Decays KL->pi0pi0mu+mu- and KL->pi0pi0X0->pi0pi0mu+mu-

The KTeV E799 experiment has conducted a search for the rare decays KL->pi0pi0mu+mu- and KL->pi0pi0X0->pi0pi0mu+mu-, where the X0 is a possible new neutral boson that was reported by the HyperCP experiment with a mass of (214.3 pm 0.5) MeV/c^{2}. We find no evidence for either decay. We obtain upper limits of Br(KL->pi0pi0X0->pi0pi0mu+mu-) < 1.0 x 10^{-10} and Br(KL->pi0pi0mu+mu-) < 9.2 x 10^{-11} at the 90% confidence level. This result rules out the pseudoscalar X0 as an explanation of the HyperCP result under the scenario that the \bar{d}sX0 coupling is completely real.

Forward Neutron Production at the Fermilab Main Injector

We have measured cross sections for forward neutron production from a variety of targets using proton beams from the Fermilab Main Injector. Measurements were performed for proton beam momenta of 58 GeV/c, 84 GeV/c, and 120 GeV/c. The cross section dependence on the atomic weight (A) of the targets was found to vary as $A^(alpha)$ where $α$ is $0.46\pm0.06$ for a beam momentum of 58 GeV/c and 0.54$\pm$0.05 for 120 GeV/c. The cross sections show reasonable agreement with FLUKA and DPMJET Monte Carlos. Comparisons have also been made with the LAQGSM Monte Carlo.

Precise Measurements of Direct CP Violation, CPT Symmetry, and Other Parameters in the Neutral Kaon System

We present precise tests of CP and CPT symmetry based on the full dataset of K to pipi decays collected by the KTeV experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory during 1996, 1997, and 1999. This dataset contains 16 million K to 2pi0 and 69 million K to pi+pi- decays. We measure the direct CP violation parameter Re(epsilon'/epsilon) = (19.2 pm 2.1)x10-4. We find the KL-KS mass difference Deltam = (5270 pm 12)x10^6 hbar/s and the KS lifetime tauS = (89.62 pm 0.05)x10-12 s. We also measure several parameters that test CPT invariance. We find the difference between the phase of the indirect CP violation parameter, epsilon, and the superweak phase, phi_epsilon - phi_SW = (0.40 pm 0.56) degrees. We measure the difference of the relative phases between the CP violating and CP conserving decay amplitudes for K to pi+pi- (phi+-) and for K to 2pi0 (phi00), Delta phi = (0.30 pm 0.35) degrees. From these phase measurements, we place a limit on the mass difference between K0 and K0bar, DeltaM < 4.8 x 10-19 GeV/c^2 at 95% C.L. These results are consistent with those of other experiments, our own earlier measurements, and CPT symmetry.

Study of the rare hyperon decay Omega \to Xi π^+ π^-

We report a new measurement of the decay Ω^- \to Ξ^- π^+ π^- with 76 events and a first observation of the decay Ω^+ \to Ξ^+ π^+ π^- with 24 events, yielding a combined branching ratio (3.74 ^{+0.67}_{-0.56}) \times 10^{-4}. This represents a factor 25 increase in statistics over the best previous measurement. No evidence is seen for CP violation, with B(Ω^- \to Ξ^- π^+ π^-)=4.04^{+0.83}_{-0.71} \times 10^{-4} and B(Ω^+ \to Ξ^+ π^+ π^-)=3.15^{+1.12}_{-0.89} \times 10^{-4}. Contrary to theoretical expectation, we see little evidence for the decays Ω^- \to Ξ_{1530}^{*0} π^- and Ω^+ \to Ξ_{1530}^{*0} π^+ and place a 90% C.L. upper limit on the combined branching ratio B(Ω^-(Ω^+) \to Ξ^{*0}_{1530}(Ξ^{*0}_{1530}) π^\mp)<7.0 \times 10^{-5}.

Charged Kaon Mass Measurement using the Cherenkov Effect

The two most recent and precise measurements of the charged kaon mass use X-rays from kaonic atoms and report uncertainties of 14 ppm and 22 ppm yet differ from each other by 122 ppm. We describe the possibility of an independent mass measurement using the measurement of Cherenkov light from a narrow-band beam of kaons, pions, and protons. This technique was demonstrated using data taken opportunistically by the Main Injector Particle Production experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory which recorded beams of protons, kaons, and pions ranging in momentum from +37 GeV/c to +63 GeV/c. The measured value is 491.3 +/- 1.7 MeV/c^2, which is within 1.4 sigma of the world average. An improvement of two orders of magnitude in precision would make this technique useful for resolving the ambiguity in the X-ray data and may be achievable in a dedicated experiment.

Search for the Rare Decay K_{L}\toπ^{0}π^{0}γ

The KTeV E799 experiment has conducted a search for the rare decay $K_{L}\toπ^{0}π^{0}γ$ via the topology $K_{L}\toπ^{0}π^{0}_Dγ$ (where $π^0_D\toγe^+e^-$). Due to Bose statistics of the $π^0$ pair and the real nature of the photon, the $K_{L}\toπ^{0}π^{0}γ$ decay is restricted to proceed at lowest order by the CP conserving direct emission (DE) of an E2 electric quadrupole photon. The rate of this decay is interesting theoretically since chiral perturbation theory predicts that this process vanishes at level $O(p^4)$. Therefore, this mode probes chiral perturbation theory at $O(p^6)$. In this paper we report a determination of an upper limit of $2.43\times 10^{-7}$ (90% CL) for $K_{L}\toπ^{0}π^{0}γ$. This is approximately a factor of 20 lower than previous results.

Observation of the Decay Xi^0 --> Sigma^+ mu^- nu(bar)

The Xi^0 muon semi-leptonic decay has been observed for the first time with nine identified events using the KTeV beam line and detector at Fermilab. The decay is normalized to the Xi^0 beta decay mode and yields a value for the ratio of decay rates of $(1.8^{+0.7}_{-0.5}(stat.)\pm0.2(syst.))\times 10^{-2}$. This is in agreement with the SU(3) flavor symmetric quark model.

Final Results from the KTeV Experiment on the Decay KL -> pi0 gamma gamma

We report on a new measurement of the branching ratio B(KL->pi0 gamma gamma)using the KTeV detector. We reconstruct 1982 events with an estimated background of 608, that results in B(KL -> pi0 gamma gamma) = (1.29 +/- 0.03(stat) +/- 0.05(syst)) x 10**-6. We also measure the parameter, aV, which characterizes the strength of vector meson exchange terms in this decay. We find aV = -0.31 +/- 0.05(stat) +/- 0.07(syst). These results utilize the full KTeV data set collected from 1997 to 2000 and supersede earlier KTeV measurements of the branching ratio and aV.

Determination of the Parity of the Neutral Pion via the Four-Electron Decay

We present a new determination of the parity of the neutral pion via the double Dalitz decay pi^0 -> e+ e- e+ e-. Our sample, which consists of 30511 candidate decays, was collected from K_L -> pi0 pi0 pi0 decays in flight at the KTeV-E799 experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We confirm the negative pi^0 parity, and place a limit on scalar contributions to the pi^0 -> e+ e- e+ e- decay amplitude of less than 3.3% assuming CPT conservation. The pi^0 gamma* gamma* form factor is well described by a momentum-dependent model with a slope parameter fit to the final state phase space distribution. Additionally, we have measured the branching ratio of this mode to be B(pi^0 -> e+ e- e+ e-) = (3.26 +- 0.18) x 10^(-5).

Measurement of the Decay KL -> pi0 e+ e- gamma

We report on a new measurement of the branching ratio B(KL -> pi0 e+ e- gamma) using the KTeV detector. This analysis uses the full KTeV data set collected from 1997 to 2000. We reconstruct 139 events over a background of 14, which results in B(KL -> pi0 e+ e- gamma) = (1.62 +/- 0.14 (stat) +/- 0.09 (syst)) x 10^{-8}. This result supersedes the earlier KTeV measurement of this branching ratio.

Review of Recent and Future Needs in Hadronic Flavor Particle Production Measurements

Interactions of energetic particles on target nuclei producing secondary particles will be reviewed. Current simulation codes rely upon poorly measured results from the past. While current neutrino experiments, both atmospheric and accelerator based, rely upon Kaon and pion production measurements which are poorly known and dominate their errors. The goal for the current round of experiments are to dramatically improve these measurements while improvments beyond this are still needed. It is not only of interest to neutrino experiments, but also for designing calorimeters for the the International Linear Collider which must achieve unprecedented resolutions for reaching their stated physics goals.

Measurements of the Branching Fractions and Decay Distributions for KL->πμνγand KL->πeνγ

We present measurements of R_Kl3rad = Gamma(KL->π\ellνγ; Egcm > 10 MeV)/Gamma(KL->π\ellν), where ell = mu or e, and Egcm is the photon energy in the kaon rest frame. These measurements are based on KL decays collected in 1997 by the KTeV (E832) experiment at Fermilab. With samples of 1385 KL->πμνγand 14221 KL->π\eνγcandidates, we find R_Km3rad = (0.530 +- 0.019)% and R_Ke3rad = (4.942 +- 0.062)%. We also examine distributions of photon energy and lepton-photon angle.

$Ω^-$ Hyperon Decay Modes with the HyperCP Experiment at Fermilab

The HyperCP experiment (Fermilab E871) has the largest recorded sample of $Ω^-$ hyperon decays, allowing new searches for three rare decay modes, each with five charged tracks in the final state. Results are presented for $Ω^-\toΞ^-π^+π^-$; $Ω^- \to Ξ^0(1530)π^-$; and the flavor-changing neutral-current decay $Ω^- \to Ξ^-μ^+μ^-$. Normalization of these measurements were to the decay $Ω^- \to ΛK^-$ with a five-track topology similar to the signal mode with the subsequent decay of $Λ\to p π^-$ and $K^- \to π^- π^+ π^-$ in the decay volume.

Importance of Future Hyperon Beta Decay Experiments

Recent results from the KTeV experiment at Fermilab using $Ξ^0$ hyperons have enabled a great leap in improving our understanding of elementary particle physics, especially with the first form-factor measurement from the semi-leptonic decay $Ξ^0 \to Σ^+ e^- \barν$. This decay is a test of whether the standard model contains all of the needed parameters to fully describe hyperon beta decay. It was observed for the first time only in 1997 even though its importance had been explicitly stated in 1961 by the early theories of the standard model as formulated by N. Cabibbo. We have the ability to improve this measurement substantially by making the definitive form-factor measurement with a sample of 30,000 such decays from a forthcoming experiment, which will either show or rule out the existence any additional second class weak currents, an obviously important measurement allowing particle physics to finally put this question to rest. We also have the ability to make a measurement of hyperon compositeness by measuring the charged $Σ^{\pm}$ beta decay into $Λ^0$, and in addition to search for mass coupling terms in hyperon beta decays where the muon replaces the electron, important for determining the $g_3$ and $f_3$ form-factors. These are the important questions to answer in studying strange baryon decays, and are reviewed in this article.

Neutral Hyperon and H-Dibaryon Results from KTeV

Results from the KTeV experiment at Fermilab using neutral Xi hyperons are presented, especially the first form-factor (FF) measurement from its semi-leptonic decay. This decay, which is an important test of the Standard Model, was observed for the first time using the 1997 KTeV experiment. We also report on the analysis of a large samples of neutral Xi weak radiative decays, and a search for the decay of a lightly bound $H^0$ dibaryon.
