Charge current in ferromagnet - triplet superconductor junctions

We calculate the tunneling conductance spectra of a ferromagnetic metal / insulator / triplet superconductor from the reflection amplitudes using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formula. For the triplet superconductor, we assume one special $p$-wave order parameter, having line nodes, and two two dimensional $f$-wave order parameters with line nodes, breaking the time reversal symmetry. Also we examine nodeless pairing potentials. The evolution of the spectra with the exchange potential depends solely on the topology of the gap. The weak Andreev reflection within the ferromagnet results in the suppression of the tunneling conductance and eliminates the resonances due to the anisotropy of the pairing potential. The tunneling spectra splits asymmetrically with respect to $E=0$ under the influence of an external magnetic field. The results can be used to distinguish between the possible candidate pairing states of the superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Tunneling spectra for ($d_{x^2-y^2}+is$)-wave superconductors versus tunneling spectra for ($d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$)-wave superconductors

The tunneling conductance spectra of a normal metal / insulator / singlet superconductor is calculated from the reflection amplitudes using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formulation. The pairing symmetry of the superconductor is assumed to be $d_{x^2-y^2}+is$, or $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$. It is found that in the ($d_{x^2-y^2}+is$)-wave case there is a well defined conductance peak in the conductance spectra, in the amplitude of the secondary s-wave component. In the ($d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$)-wave case the tunneling conductance has residual values within the gap, due to the formation of bound states. The bound state energies depend on the angle of the incident quasiparticles, and also on the boundary orientation. On the basis of this observation an electron focusing experiment is proposed to probe the ($d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$)-wave state.

Charge current in ferromagnet-superconductor junction with pairing state of broken time-reversal symmetry

We calculate the tunneling conductance spectra of a ferromagnetic metal/insulator/superconductor using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formulation. Two possible states for the superconductor are considered with the time reversal symmetry ($\cal{T}$) broken, i.e., $d_{x^2-y^2}+is$, or $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$. In both cases the tunneling conductance within the gap is suppressed with the increase of the exchange interaction due to the suppression of the Andreev reflection. In the $(d_{x^2-y^2}+is)$-wave case the peaks that exist when the ferromagnet is a normal metal in the amplitude of the s-wave component due to the bound state formation are reduced symmetrically, with the increase of the exchange field, while in the $(d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy})$-wave case the residual density of states within the gap develops a dip around E=0 with the increase of the exchange field. These results would be useful to discriminate between $\cal{T}$-broken pairing states near the surface in high-$T_c$ superconductors

Tunneling conductance in normal metal - triplet superconductor junction

We calculate the tunneling conductance spectra of a normal metal / insulator / triplet superconductor from the reflection amplitudes using the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formula. For the triplet superconductor we assume one special p-wave order parameter having line nodes and two two dimensional $f$-wave order parameters with line nodes breaking the time-reversal symmetry. Also we examine nodeless pairing potentials. The tunneling peaks are due to the formation of bound states for each surface orientation at discrete quasiparticles trajectory angles. The tunneling spectra can be used to distinguish the possible candidate pairing states of the superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$.

Critical currents in Josephson junctions, with unconventional pairing symmetry: $d_{x^2-y^2}+is$ versus $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$

Phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory is used to calculate the possible spontaneous vortex states that may exist at corner junctions of $d_{x^2-y^2}+ix$-wave, (where $x=s$ or $x=d_{xy}$) and s-wave superconductors. We study the magnetic flux and the critical current modulation with the junction orientation angle $θ$, the magnitude of the order parameter, and the magnetic field $H$. It is seen that the critical current $I_c$ versus the magnetic flux $Φ$ relation is symmetric / asymmetric for $x=d_{xy}/s$ when the orientation is exactly such that the lobes of the dominant $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave order parameter points towards the two junctions, which are at right angles for the corner junction. The conclusion is that a measurement of the $I_c(Φ)$ relation may distinguish which symmetry ($d_{x^2-y^2}+is$ or $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$) the order parameter has.

Stability analysis of static solutions in a Josephson junction

We present all the possible solutions of a Josephson junction with bias current and magnetic field with both inline and overlap geometry, and examine their stability. We follow the bifurcation of new solutions as we increase the junction length. The analytical results, in terms of elliptic functions in the case of inline geometry, are in agreement with the numerical calculations and explain the strong hysteretic phenomena typically seen in the calculation of the maximum tunneling current. This suggests a different experimental approach based on the use, instead of the external magnetic field the modulus of the elliptic function or the related quantity the total magnetic flux to avoid hysteretic behavior and unfold the overlapping $I_{max}(H)$ curves.

Critical currents in Josephson junctions with macroscopic defects

The critical currents in Josephson junctions of conventional superconductors with macroscopic defects are calculated for different defect critical current densities as a function of the magnetic field. We also study the evolution of the different modes with the defect position, at zero external field. We study the stability of the solutions and derive simple arguments, that could help the defect characterization. In most cases a reentrant behavior is seen, where both a maximum and a minimum current exist.

Magnetic-interference patterns in Josephson junctions with d+is symmetry

The magnetic interference pattern and the spontaneous flux in unconventional Josephson junctions of superconductors with d+is symmetry are calculated for different reduced junction lengths and the relative factor of the d and s wave components. This is a time reversal broken symmetry state. We study the stability of the fractional vortex and antivortex which are spontaneously formed and examine their evolution as we change the length and the relative factor of d and s wave components. The asymmetry in the field modulated diffraction pattern exists for lengths as long as L=10λ_J.
