Calibration of the ICARUS cryogenic photo-detection system at FNAL

The calibration of the ICARUS photo-detection system is based on a low power laser diode at 405 nm. Laser pulses arrive to one optical switch and then are sent to 36 UHV flanges, by 20 meters long optical patches. Light is then delivered to the ten PMTs connected to a single flange, by 7m long injection optical patches. Extensive tests of the used components and care in the design of the optical system have guaranteed to each PMT a sizeable calibration signal with minimal distortion, with respect to the original one. Gain equalization of PMTs has reached a 1 per cent resolution. In this procedure data from background photons were also used. The distribution of the PMTs signal arrival time has a distribution with a resolution less than 1 ns, thus allowing a good determination of the absolute event timing. The status of the laser calibration system with its possible upgrades will be reported.

Comparisons and challenges of modern neutrino scattering experiments (TENSIONS2016 report)

Over the last decade, there has been enormous effort to measure neutrino interaction cross sections important to oscillation experiments. However, a number of results from modern experiments appear to be in tension with each other, despite purporting to measure the same processes. The TENSIONS2016 workshop was held at University of Pittsburgh July 24-31, 2016 and was sponsored by the Pittsburgh High Energy Physics, Astronomy, and Cosmology Center (PITT-PACC). The focus was on bringing experimentalists from three experiments together to compare results in detail and try to find the source of tension by clarifying and comparing signal definitions and the analysis strategies used for each measurement. A set of comparisons between the measurements using a consistent set of models was also made. This paper summarizes the main conclusions of that work.

From old wars to new wars and global terrorism

Even before 9/11 there were claims that the nature of war had changed fundamentally. The 9/11 attacks created an urgent need to understand contemporary wars and their relationship to older conventional and terrorist wars, both of which exhibit remarkable regularities. The frequency-intensity distribution of fatalities in "old wars", 1816-1980, is a power-law with exponent 1.80. Global terrorist attacks, 1968-present, also follow a power-law with exponent 1.71 for G7 countries and 2.5 for non-G7 countries. Here we analyze two ongoing, high-profile wars on opposite sides of the globe - Colombia and Iraq. Our analysis uses our own unique dataset for killings and injuries in Colombia, plus publicly available data for civilians killed in Iraq. We show strong evidence for power-law behavior within each war. Despite substantial differences in contexts and data coverage, the power-law coefficients for both wars are tending toward 2.5, which is a value characteristic of non-G7 terrorism as opposed to old wars. We propose a plausible yet analytically-solvable model of modern insurgent warfare, which can explain these observations.
