Dipolar interlayer excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide alloy heterobilayers

Interlayer excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) heterobilayers possess a permanent electric dipole moment and long recombination lifetimes, making them a promising platform for exploring excitonic many-body physics. Here, we report dipolar interlayer excitons in a MoS$_{1.4}$Se$_{0.6}$/MoSe$_2$ heterobilayer encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride. Low-temperature photoluminescence measurements reveal a distinct emission peak at $\sim1.4$ eV, attributed to radiative recombination of interlayer excitons. The emission exhibits a blueshift with increasing excitation power, indicating repulsive dipole-dipole interactions. Time-resolved photoluminescence measurements uncover nanosecond-scale lifetimes, consistent with the spatial separation of electrons and holes across the two layers. These findings establish chalcogen-alloyed TMD heterobilayers as a versatile platform for engineering dipolar excitons and tuning excitonic interactions in van der Waals materials.

Room temperature observation of biexcitons in exfoliated WS2 monolayers

Single layers of WS2 are direct gap semiconductors with high photoluminescence (PL) yield holding great promise for emerging applications in optoelectronics. The spatial confinement in a 2D monolayer together with the weak dielectric screening lead to huge binding energies for the neutral excitons as well as other excitonic complexes, such as trions and biexcitons whose binding energies scale accordingly. Here, we report on the existence of biexcitons in mechanically exfoliated WS2 flakes from 78 K up to room temperature. Performing temperature and power dependent PL measurements, we identify the biexciton emission channel through the superlinear behavior of the integrated PL intensity as a function of the excitation power density. On the contrary, neutral and charged excitons show a linear to sublinear dependence in the whole temperature range. From the energy difference between the emission channels of the biexciton and neutral exciton, a biexciton binding energy of 65-70 meV is determined.

InAs/GaAs (211)B quantum dots with negligible FSS for the generation of entangled photons

Polarization-resolved single dot spectroscopy performed on (211)B InAs/GaAs quantum dots reveals that the fine structure splitting of the excitonic levels in these dots is much lower compared to the usual (100)-grown InAs dots. Time-resolved measurements confirm the high oscillator strength of these dots, and thus their good quantum efficiency at 4 K, comparable with that of (100) InAs/GaAs dots. Last, photon correlation measurements demonstrate single photon emission out of the excitonic optical transition of these dots. All these features make this novel dot system very promising for implementing solid-state entangled photon sources.
