Observation of the Forbush decrease on 2024 May 10, using the ALPAQUITA air-shower array at the 70-1000 GV rigidity range

The Andes Large area PArticle detector for Cosmic ray and Astronomy (ALPACA) is a new air-shower array experiment under construction in the Bolivian Andes, and its prototype ALPAQUITA surface array has been operating since 2023 April. In addition to the traditional $\ge$3-hit or $\ge$4-hit coincidences to trigger recording air-shower events, ALPAQUITA records the counting rates of the $\ge$1-hit and $\ge$2-hit events (Any1 and Any2, respectively). We report a successful detection of a Forbush decrease occurred on 2024 May 10 caused by a passage of an interplanetary shock formed ahead of the Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection. The amplitude detected in the Any1 rate is 4.26$\pm$0.33% at the median primary rigidity of 76GV which is consistent with the observations with the worldwide neutron monitor and muon detector networks. Under the assumption of a power-law rigidity spectrum, we renormalized the errors of the observed amplitude ($A_{obs}$) and fitted them as a function of the median primary rigidity ($R_{m}$) of each detector and observational method. The result $A_{obs} = (10.9\% \pm 0.9\%) \times (R_{m}/10\,GV)^{-0.55 \pm 0.07}$ exhibits a hard nature of this event. Our non-detection in the Any2 rate decrease constrains the amplitude with a 2$\sigma$ upper limit to be 0.95% at 960GV. This marginally suggests an existence of a spectral softening between 100GV and 1000GV as also suggested by the Misato underground muon detector at 145GV. Although a strong geomagnetic storm was observed during this period, we conclude it does not impact our results. Our novel technique realizes a unique coverage to study the behavior of the Forbush decreases at the highest rigidity.

A new air shower array in the Southern Hemisphere looking for the origins of Cosmic rays: the ALPACA experiment

The Tibet AS$\gamma$ experiment successfully detected sub-PeV $\gamma$-rays from the Crab nebula using a Surface Array and underground muon detector. Considering this, we are building in Bolivia a new experiment to explore the Southern Hemisphere, looking for the origins of cosmic rays in our Galaxy. The name of this project is Andes Large area PArticle detector for Cosmic ray physics and Astronomy (ALPACA). A prototype array called ALPAQUITA, with $1/4$ the total area of the full ALPACA, started observations in September $2022$. In this paper we introduce the status of ALPAQUITA and the plans to extend the array. We also report the results of the observation of the moon shadow in cosmic rays.

Observations of $\nu=1$ Quantum Hall Effect and Inter-Band Effects of Magnetic fields on Hall Conductivity in Organic Massless Dirac Fermion System $\alpha$-(BETS)$_2$I$_3$ under Pressure

We investigated the magnetoresistance and the Hall effect in an organic massless Dirac fermion system $\alpha$-(BETS)$_2$I$_3$ under pressure. The Fermi energy of this system is slightly far away from the Dirac points, and thus the $\nu =1$ quantum Hall state is realized in a low magnetic field at low temperatures. Moreover, the experimental formula for chemical potential as a function of temperature is clarified. We succeeded in detecting the inter-band effects of the magnetic field on the Hall conductivity when the chemical potential passes the Dirac points.

Chasing the spin gap through the phase diagram of a frustrated Mott insulator

The quest for entangled spin excitations has stimulated intense research on frustrated magnetic systems. For almost two decades, the triangular-lattice Mott insulator $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ has been the hottest candidate for a $gapless$ quantum spin liquid with itinerant spinons. Very recently, however, this scenario was overturned as electron-spin-resonance (ESR) studies unveiled a spin gap, calling for reevaluation of the magnetic ground state. Here we achieve a precise mapping of this spin-gapped phase through the Mott transition by ultrahigh-resolution strain tuning. Our transport experiments reveal a reentrance of charge localization below $T^{\star}=6$ K associated with a gap size of 30-50 K. The negative slope of the insulator-metal boundary, $dT^{\star}/dp<0$, evidences the low-entropy nature of the spin-singlet ground state. By tuning the enigmatic '6 K anomaly' through the phase diagram of $\kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$, we identify it as the transition to a valence-bond-solid phase, with typical magnetic and structural fingerprints, that persists at $T\rightarrow 0$ until unconventional superconductivity and metallic transport proliferate.

Large Diamagnetism and Electromagnetic Duality in Two-dimensional Dirac Electron System

A Dirac electron system in solids mimics a relativistic quantum physics that is compatible with Maxwell's equations, by which we anticipate unified electromagnetic responses. We find a large orbital diamagnetism only along the interplane direction and the nearly temperature-independent conductance of the order of e2/h for the new 2D Dirac organic conductor, a-(BETS)2I3. Distinct from conventional electrons in solids whose nonrelativistic effects bifurcate electric and magnetic responses, the observed orbital diamagnetism scales the electrical conductivity for a wide temperature range. This demonstrates that an electromagnetic duality that is valid only within the relativistic framework is revived in solids.

Detectability of southern gamma-ray sources beyond 100 TeV with ALPAQUITA, the prototype experiment of ALPACA

Andes Large-area PArticle detector for Cosmic-ray physics and Astronomy (ALPACA) is an international experiment that applies southern very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray astronomy to determine the origin of cosmic rays around the knee energy region ($10^{15}\, {\rm eV} - 10^{16}\, {\rm eV}$). The experiment consists of an air shower (AS) array with a surface of $83, 000\, {\rm m}^2$ and an underground water Cherenkov muon detector (MD) array covering $5, 400\, {\rm m}^2$. The experimental site is at the Mt. Chacaltaya plateau in La Paz, Bolivia, with an altitude of $4, 740\, {\rm m}$ corresponding to $572\, {\rm g}/{\rm cm}^2$ atmospheric thickness. As the prototype experiment of ALPACA, the ALPAQUITA experiment aims to begin data acquisition in late 2021. The ALPAQUITA array consists of a smaller AS array ($18, 450\, {\rm m}^2$) and underground MD ($900\, {\rm m}^2$), which are now under construction. ALPAQUITA's sensitivity to gamma-ray sources is evaluated with Monte Carlo simulations. The simulation finds that five gamma-ray sources observed by H.E.S.S. and HAWC experiments will be detected by ALPAQUITA beyond 10 TeV and one out of these five - HESS J1702-420A - above 300 TeV in one calendar year observation. The latter finding means that scientific discussions can be made on the emission mechanism of gamma rays beyond 100 TeV from southern sources on the basis of the observational results of this prototype experiment.

Quantum Phase Transition in Organic Massless Dirac Fermion System $α $-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ under pressure

We investigate the effect of strong electronic correlation on the massless Dirac fermion system, $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$, under pressure. In this organic salt, one can control the electronic correlation by changing pressure and access the quantum critical point between the massless Dirac fermion phase and the charge ordering phase. We theoretically study the electronic structure of this system by applying the slave-rotor theory and find that the Fermi velocity decreases without creating a mass gap upon approaching the quantum critical point from the massless Dirac fermion phase. We show that the pressure-dependence of the Fermi velocity is in good quantitative agreement with the results of the experiment where the Fermi velocity is determined by the analysis of the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the doped samples. Our result implies that the massless Dirac fermion system exhibits a quantum phase transition without creating a mass gap even in the presence of strong electronic correlations.

Aperiodic quantum oscillations of particle-hole asymmetric Dirac cones

We report experimental measurements and theoretical analysis of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations in a Dirac cone system: the a-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 organic metal under hydrostatic pressure. The measured SdH oscillations reveal anomalies at high magnetic fields B where the 1/B oscillations periodicity is lost above 7 T. We interpret these unusual results within a theoretical model that takes into account intrinsic distortions of the a-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 Dirac cones such as a parabolic particle-hole asymmetric correction. Others possible causes, such as a cone tilting or a Zeeman effect, are carefully ruled out. The observations are consistent among a-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 samples with different Fermi levels.

Universality Class of the Mott Transition

Pressure dependence of the conductivity and thermoelectric power is measured through the Mott transition in the layer organic conductor EtMe3P[Pd(dmit)2]2. The critical behavior of the thermoelectric effect provides a clear and objective determination of the Mott-Hubbard transition during the isothermal pressure sweep. Above the critical end point, the metal-insulator crossing, determined by the thermoelectric effect minimum value, is not found to coincide with the maximum of the derivative of the conductivity as a function of pressure. We show that the critical exponents of the Mott-Hubbard transition fall within the Ising universality class regardless of the dimensionality of the system.

Quantum Hall effect in multilayered massless Dirac fermion systems with tilted cones

We report the first observation of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations and quantized Hall resistance in the multilayered massless Dirac fermion system $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ with tilted cones. Holes were injected into the thin crystal fixed on a polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) substrate by contact electrification. The detection of SdH oscillations whose phase was modified by Berry's phase $π$ strongly suggested that the carrier doping was successful in this system. We succeeded in detecting the quantum Hall effect (QHE) with the steps which is the essence of two dimensional Dirac fermion systems. The number of effectively doped layers was examined to be two in this device. We reveal that the correlation between effective layers plays an important role in QHE.

Nuclear prolate-shape dominance with the Woods-Saxon potential

We study the prolate-shape predominance of the nuclear ground-state deformation by calculating the masses of more than two thousand even-even nuclei using the Strutinsky method, modified by Kruppa, and improved by us. The influences of the surface thickness of the single-particle potentials, the strength of the spin-orbit potential, and the pairing correlations are investigated by varying the parameters of the Woods-Saxon potential and the pairing interaction. The strong interference between the effects of the surface thickness and the spin-orbit potential is confirmed to persist for six sets of the Woods-Saxon potential parameters. The observed behavior of the ratios of prolate, oblate, and spherical nuclei versus potential parameters are rather different in different mass regions. It is also found that the ratio of spherical nuclei increases for weakly bound unstable nuclei. Differences of the results from the calculations with the Nilsson potential are described in detail.

Inter-Band Effects of Magnetic Field on Hall Conductivity in Multi Layered Massless Dirac Fermion System $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$

We have discovered two-dimensional zero-gap material with a layered structure in the organic conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ under high hydrostatic pressure. In contrast to graphene, the electron-hole symmetry is not good except at the vicinity of the Dirac points. Thus, temperature dependence of the chemical potential, $μ$, plays an important role in the transport in this system. The experimental formula of $μ$ is revealed. We succeeded in detecting the inter-band effects of a magnetic field on the Hall conductivity when $μ$ passes the Dirac point.

Spin and Valley Splittings in Multilayered Massless Dirac Fermion System

The inter-layer magnetoresistance in a multilayered massless Dirac fermion system, $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$, under hydrostatic pressure was investigated. We succeeded in detecting the zero-mode (n=0) Landau level and its spin splitting in the magnetic field normal to the 2D plane. We demonstrated that the effective Coulomb interaction in the magnetic field intensifies the spin splitting of zero-mode Landau carriers. At temperatures below 2K, magnetic fields above several Tesla break the twofold valley degeneracy.

Effects of the Zero-Mode Landau Level on Inter-Layer Magnetoresistance in Multilayer Massless Dirac Fermion Systems

We report on the experimental results of interlayer magnetoresistance in multilayer massless Dirac fermion system $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ under hydrostatic pressure and its interpretation. We succeeded in detecting the zero-mode Landau level (n=0 Landau level) that is epected to appear at the contact points of Dirac cones in the magnetic field normal to the two-dimensional plane. The characteristic feature of zero-mode Landau carriers including the Zeeman effect is clearly seen in the interlayer magnetoresistance.

Deformed Hartree-Fock Calculation of Proton-Rich Nuclei

We perform Hartree-Fock+BCS calculations for even-even nuclei with 2 <= Z <= 82 and N ranging from outside the proton drip line to the experimental frontier on the neutron-rich side. The ground state solutions are obtained for 737 nuclei, together with shape-coexistence solutions for 480 nuclei. Our method features the Cartesian-mesh representation of single-particle wavefunctions, which is advantageous in treating nucleon skins and exotic shapes. The results are compared with those of the finite-range droplet model of Moller et al. as well as the experimental values.

Pairing correlation in nuclear matter from Skyrme force

The properties of pairing correlation in nuclear matter are investigated by using various versions of Skyrme forces. Truncation of states involving pairing correlation, necessary due to zero range nature of the Skyrme force, is discussed in detail. A plateau appears in pairing gap versus cutoff for each force. We propose to choose the cutoff parameter in the middle of the plateau so that the parameterization is independent of nuclides.

Microscopic approach to collective motion

An overview of a microscopic framework based on the Hartree-Fock description of the mean field is presented which, starting from an effective interaction allows a description of collective motions. A study of the isotope shifts in the Pb region illustrates the importance of the effective interactions and points to their limitations. Such forces should be improved in order to achieve a better description of nuclei properties especially with the coming availability of exotic beam facilities. The coupling of collective quadrupole and octupole degrees of freedom in $^{194}$Pb is analyzed within the Generator Coordinate Method, which represents a step beyond the simple mean-field approximation. As a last example, we present a study of nuclear rotations. First we discuss results on superdeformed rotating bands in $^{192}$Hg, $^{194}$Hg and $^{194}$Pb obtained without including a treatment of pairing correlations. Preliminary calculations are also presented with these correlations included as well as an approximate projection on nucleon number. Email contact: paul@amoco.saclay.cea.fr
