Structure analysis of high-pressure phase for skyrmion-hosting multiferroic Cu2OSeO3

Cu2OSeO3 is known as a unique example of insulating multiferroic compounds with skyrmion spin texture, which is characterized by the chiral cubic crystal structure at ambient pressure. Recently, it has been reported that this compound shows pressure-induced structural transition with large enhancement of magnetic ordering temperature Tc. In the present study, we have investigated the detailed crystal structure in the high pressure phase, by combining the synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiment with the diamond anvil cell and the analysis based on the genetic algorithm. Our results suggest that the original pyrochlore Cu network is sustained even after the structural transition, while the orientation of SeO3 molecule as well as the position of oxygen in the middle of Cu tetrahedra are significantly modified. The latter features may be the key for the reported enhancement of Tc and associated stabilization of skyrmion phase at room temperature.

Pressure-induced high-Tc superconducting phase in FeSe: correlation between anion height and Tc

In this study, we performed high-pressure electrical resistivity measurements of polycrystalline FeSe in the pressure range of 1-16.0 GPa at temperatures of 4-300 K. A precise evaluation of Tc from zero-resistivity temperatures revealed that Tc shows a slightly distorted dome-shaped curve, with maximum Tc (30 K) at 6 GPa, which is lower than a previously reported Tc value (~37 K). With the application of pressure, the temperature dependence of resistivity above Tc changes dramatically to a linear dependence; a non-Fermi-liquid-like "high-Tc" phase appears above 3 GPa. We found a striking correlation between Tc and the Se height: the lower the Se height, the more enhanced is Tc. Moreover, this relation is broadly applicable to other iron pnictides, strongly indicating that high-temperature superconductivity can appear only around the optimum anion height (~1.38A). On the basis of these results, we suggest that the anion height should be considered as a key determining factor of Tc of iron-based superconductors containing various anions.

Anomalous metallic state in the vicinity of Metal to Valence Bond Solid insulator transition in LiVS2

We investigate LiVS2 and LiVSe2 with a triangular lattice as itinerant analogues of LiVO2, known for the formation of valence bond solid (VBS) state out of S = 1 frustrated magnet. LiVS2, which is located at the border between a metal and a correlated insulator, shows a first ordered transition from a paramagnetic metal to a VBS insulator at Tc ~ 305 K upon cooling. The presence of VBS state in the close vicinity of insulator-metal transition may suggest the importance of itinerancy in the formation of VBS state. We argue that the high temperature metallic phase of LiVS2 has a pseudo-gap, likely originating from the VBS fluctuation. LiVSe2 was found to be a paramagnetic metal down to 2 K.

Possible Multiple Gap Superconductivity with Line Nodes in Heavily Hole-Doped Superconductor KFe2As2 Studied by 75As-NQR and Specific Heat

We report the 75As nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and specific heat measurements of the heavily hole-doped superconductor KFe2As2 (Tc = 3.5 K). The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in the superconducting state exhibits quite gradual temperature dependence with no coherence peak below Tc. The quasi-particle specific heat C_QP/T shows small specific heat jump which is about 30% of electronic specific heat coefficient just below Tc. In addition, it suggests the existence of low-energy quasi-particle excitation at the lowest measurement temperature T = 0.4 K \simeq Tc/10. These temperature dependence of 1/T1 and C_QP/T can be explained by multiple nodal superconducting gap scenario rather than multiple fully-gapped s_\pm-wave one within simple gap analysis.

75As NMR Study of Hole-Doped Superconductor Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (Tc = 38K)

We report the 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement of the hole-doped superconductor Ba1-xKxFe2As2 with different lattice parameters and different superconducting volume fractions (Tc = 38K). 75As-NMR spectra revealed that the magnetically ordered and superconducting phases are microscopically separated. The spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in the normal state reflects the existence of a large two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation. The 1/T1 in the superconducting state down to the lowest measurement temperature T varies close to T^3. In addition, it exhibits no coherence peak just below Tc. This shows a T dependence similar to those of other iron pnictides.

Suppression of Magnetic Order by Pressure in BaFe2As2

We performed the dc resistivity and the ZF 75As-NMR measurement of BaFe2As2 under high pressure. The T-P phase diagram of BaFe2As2 determined from resistivity anomalies and the ZF 75As-NMR clearly revealed that the SDW anomaly is quite robust against P.

75As NMR study of the ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2

We report 75As-NMR measurements of the ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2. 75As-NMR spectra clearly revealed that magnetic transition occurs at around 131 K in our samples, which corresponds to the emergence of spin density wave. Temperature dependence of the internal magnetic field suggests that the transition is likely of the first order. The critical-slowing-down phenomenon in the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 is not pronounced in this material.

Multicritical end-point of the first-order ferromagnetic transition in colossal magnetoresistive manganites

We have studied the bandwidth-temperature-magnetic field phase diagram of RE(0.55)Sr(0.45)MnO(3) colossal magnetoresistance manganites with ferromagnetic metallic (FM) ground state. The bandwidth (or equivalently the double exchange interaction) was controlled both via chemical substitution and hydrostatic pressure with a focus on the vicinity of the critical pressure p* where the character of the zero-field FM transition changes from first to second order. Below p* the first-order FM transition extends up to a critical magnetic field, H_cr. It is suppressed by pressure and approaches zero on the larger bandwidth side where the surface of the first-order FM phase boundary is terminated by a multicritical end-point (p*~32 kbar, T*~188 K, H*=0). The change in the character of the transition and the decrease of the CMR effect is attributed to the reduced CO/OO fluctuations.

Quantum criticality and disorder in the antiferromagnetic critical point of NiS$_{2}$ pyrite

A quantum critical point (QCP) between the antiferromagnetic and the paramagnetic phases was realized by applying a hydrostatic pressure of ~ 7 GPa on single crystals of NiS_{2} pyrite with a low residual resistivity, rho_{0}, of 0.5 mu-Omega-cm. We found that the critical behavior of the resistivity, rho, in this clean system contrasts sharply with those observed in its disordered analogue, NiS_{2-x}Se_{x} solid-solution, demonstrating the unexpectedly drastic effect of disorder on the quantum criticality. Over a whole paramagnetic region investigated up to P = 9 GPa, a crossover temperature, defined as the onset of T^{2} dependence of rho, an indication of Fermi liquid, was suppressed to a substantially low temperature T sim 2 K and, instead, a non Fermi liquid behavior of rho, T^{3/2}-dependence, robustly showed up.

Pressure-induced enhancement of superconductivity and superconducting-superconducting transition in CaC$\_6$

We measured the electrical resistivity, $\varrho(T)$, of superconducting CaC$\_6$ at ambient and high pressure up to 16 GPa. For $P \leq$8 GPa, we found a large increase of $T\_c$ with pressure from 11.5 up to 15.1 K. At 8 GPa, $T\_c$ drops and levels off at 5 K above 10 GPa. Correspondingly, the residual $\varrho$ increases by $\approx$ 200 times and the $\varrho(T)$ behavior becomes flat. The recovery of the pristine behavior after depressurization is suggestive of a phase transition at 8 GPa between two superconducting phases with good and bad metallic properties, the latter with a lower $T\_c$ and more static disorder.

Impurity-induced transition to a Mott insulator in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$

The electrical, magnetic, and structural properties of Sr$_3$(Ru$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$)$_2$O$_7$ (0 $\leq x \leq$ 0.2) are investigated. The parent compound Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ is a paramagnetic metal, critically close to magnetic order. We have found that, with a Ru-site doping by only a few percent of Mn, the ground state is switched from a paramagnetic metal to an antiferromagnetic insulator. Optical conductivity measurements show the opening of a gap as large as 0.1 eV, indicating that the metal-to-insulator transition is driven by the electron correlation. The complex low-temperature antiferromagnetic spin arrangement, reminiscent of those observed in some nickelates and manganites, suggests a long range orbital order.

High pressure effects on the superconductivity of beta-pyrochlore oxides AOs2O6

High pressure effects on the superconducting transitions of beta-pyrochlore superconductors AOs2O6 (A = Cs, Rb, K) are studied by measuring resistivity under high pressures up to 10 GPa. The superconducting transition temperature Tc first increases with increasing pressure in all the compounds and then exhibits a broad maximum at 7.6 K (6 GPa), 8.2 K (2 GPa) and 10 K (0.6 GPa) for A = Cs, Rb and K, respectviely. Finally, the superconductivity is suppressed completely at a critical pressure near 7 GPa and 6 GPa for A = Rb and K and probably above 10 GPa for A = Cs. Characteristic changes in the coefficinet A of the T2 term in resistivity and residual resistivity are observed, both of which are synchronized with the corresponding change in Tc. It is suggested that electron correlations and certain quantum fluctuations play important roles in the occurrence or suppression of superconductivity in the beta-pyrochlore oxides.

Pressure induced transition from a spin glass to an itinerant ferromagnet in half doped manganite Ln0.5Ba0.5MnO3 (Ln=Sm and Nd) with quenched disorder

The effect of quenched disorder on the multiphase competition has been investigated by examining the pressure phase diagram of half doped manganite Ln0.5B0.5MnO3 (Ln = Sm and Nd) with A-site disorders. Sm0.5Ba0.5MnO3, a spin glass insulator at ambient pressure, switches to a ferromagnetic metal with increasing pressure, followed by a rapid increase of the ferromagnetic transition temperature Tc. The rapid increase of Tc was confirmed also for Nd0.5Ba0.5MnO3. These observations indicate that the unusual suppression of the multicritical phase boundary in the A-site disordered system, previously observed as a function of the averaged A-site ionic radius, is essentially controlled by the pressure and hence the band width. The effect of quenched disorder is therefore much enhanced with approaching the multicritical region.

Gigantic anisotropic uniaxial pressure effect on superconductivity within the CuO2 plane of La1.64Eu0.2Sr0.16CuO4 - strain control of stripe criticality

The effect of uniaxial pressure on superconductivity was examined for a high-Tc cuprate La1.64Eu0.2Sr0.16CuO4, which is located at the boundary between the superconducting and stripe phases. We found remarkably large anisotropy of the uniaxial pressure effect not only between the in-plane and out-of-plane pressures but also within the CuO2-plane. When the pressure is applied along the tetragonal [110] direction, we found the largest pressure effect ever observed in cuprates, dTc/dP - 2.5 K/kbar, while the change of Tc was not appreciable when applied along [100]. This substantial in-plane anisotropy is attributed to an intimate link between the symmetry of the one-dimensional stripes and that of the strain produced within the CuO2 plane.
