Field Evolution leading to hybrid inflation

In general the onset of hybrid inflation requires an extremely homogeneous field configuration at the end of Planck era. The field ϕorthogonal to the inflaton σmust be zero with high accuracy over the range exceeding the initial horizon size \sim m_{Pl}^{-1} by about two orders of magnitude. We consider a supersymmetric model that permits the decay of the oscillating field ϕinto light particles. We study the field evolution and find that the requirement of the extreme homogeneity can be relaxed. However, the field ϕmust still be smaller than the inflaton by a factor of order 1 over a region far exceeding the initial horizon size.

Inverse Symmetry Breaking and the Exact Renormalization Group

We discuss the question of inverse symmetry breaking at non-zero temperature using the exact renormalization group. We study a two-scalar theory and concentrate on the nature of the phase transition during which the symmetry is broken. We also examine the persistence of symmetry breaking at temperatures higher than the critical one.

Coarse graining and first order phase transitions

We discuss the dependence of the coarse grained free energy and the classical interface tension on the coarse graining scale $k$. A stable range appears only if the renormalized dimensionless couplings at the critical temperature are small. This gives a quantitative criterion for the validity of computations within Langer's theory of spontaneous bubble nucleation.

The Electroweak Phase Transition through the Renormalization Group

We study the high-temperature phase transitions for the Abelian and $SU(2)$ Higgs models, using the exact renormalization group. The evolution equation for a properly-defined coarse-grained free energy is solved. The phase diagram of the Abelian Higgs model has a region of second-order phase transitions governed by fixed points, for which we calculate critical exponents and crossover curves. It also has a region of first-order phase transitions, which we discuss in terms of the coarse-grained free energy. The $SU(2)$ Higgs model for small Higgs field masses has only first-order phase transitions. We derive their properties and compare with lattice and perturbative results. For larger Higgs field masses the strength of the first-order phase transitions diminishes. For masses larger than 80-100 GeV we find evidence that they are replaced by analytical crossovers.

Flow of the Coarse Grained Free Energy for Crossover Phenomena

The critical behaviour of a system of two coupled scalar fields in three dimensions is studied within the formalism of the effective average action. The fixed points of the system are identified and the crossover between them is described in detail. Besides the universal critical behaviour, the flow of the coarse grained free energy also describes the approach to scaling.

Analytical Solutions of Exact Renormalization Group Equations

We study exact renormalization group equations in the framework of the effective average action. We present analytical solutions for the scale dependence of the potential in a variety of models. These solutions display a rich spectrum of physical behaviour such as fixed points governing the universal behaviour near second order phase transitions, critical exponents, first order transitions (some of which are radiatively induced) and tricritical behaviour.

Critical equation of state from the average action

The scaling form of the critical equation of state is computed for $O(N)$-symmetric models. We employ a method based on an exact flow equation for a coarse grained free energy. A suitable truncation is solved numerically.

Solving non-perturbative flow equations

Non-perturbative exact flow equations describe the scale dependence of the effective average action. We present a numerical solution for an approximate form of the flow equation for the potential in a three-dimensional N-component scalar field theory. The critical behaviour, with associated critical exponents, can be inferred with good accuracy.

Disoriented and Plastic Soft Terms: A Dynamical Solution to the Problem of Supersymmetric Flavor Violations

We postulate that the orientation of the soft supersymmetry-breaking terms in flavor space is not fixed by tree level physics at the Planck scale; it is a dynamical variable which depends on fields that have no tree level potential. These fields can be thought of as either moduli or as the Nambu-Goldstone bosons of the spontaneously broken flavor symmetry which is non-linearly realized by the soft terms. We show that the soft terms align with the quark and lepton Yukawa couplings, just as spins align with an external magnetic field. As a result, the soft terms conserve individual lepton numbers and do not cause large flavor or CP violations. The vacuum adjusts so as to allow large sparticle splittings to naturally coexist with flavor conservation. Consequently, the resulting phenomenology is different from that of minimal supersymmetric theories. We also propose theories in which the shape of the soft terms in flavor space is a dynamical variable which depends on fields that have no tree level potential. This dynamically leads to partial degeneracy among sparticles and further supression of flavor violations. The ideas of this paper suggest a connection between the space of moduli and the spontaneously broken flavor group.

High Temperature Phase Transition in Two-Scalar Theories

Two-scalar theories at high temperature exhibit a rich spectrum of possible critical behaviour, with a second or first order phase transition. In the vicinity of the critical temperature one can observe critical exponents, tricritical points and crossover behaviour. None of these phenomena are visible to high temperature perturbation theory.

High Temperature Phase Transitions in Two-Scalar Theories with Large $N$ Techniques

We consider a theory of a scalar one-component field $ϕ$ coupled to a scalar $N$-component field $χ$. Using large $N$ techiques we calculate the effective potential in the leading order in $1/N$. We show that this is equivalent to a resummation of an infinite subclass of graphs in perturbation theory, which involve fluctuations of the $χ$ field only. We study the temperature dependence of the expectation value of the $ϕ$ field and the resulting first and second order phase transitions.

Coleman-Weinberg Phase Transition in Two-Scalar Models

We explore the Coleman-Weinberg phase transition in regions outside the validity of perturbation theory. For this purpose we study a Euclidean field theory with two scalars and discrete symmetry in four dimensions. The phase diagram is established by a numerical solution of a suitable truncation of exact non-perturbative flow equations. We find regions in parameter space where the phase transition (in dependence on the mass term) is of the second or the first order, separated by a triple point. Our quantitative results for the first order phase transition compare well to the standard perturbative Coleman-Weinberg calculation of the effective potential.

Non-Perturbative Analysis of the Coleman-Weinberg Phase Transition

We perform a non-perturbative study of the Coleman-Weinberg phase transition in scalar QED. Our method permits a consistent treatment of the effective potential near the origin, a region not accessible to perturbation theory. As a result, we establish reliably the first order character of the phase transition for arbitrary values of the scalar coupling.

Critical Exponents from the Effective Average Action

We compute the critical behaviour of three-dimensional scalar theories using a new exact non-perturbative evolution equation. Our values for the critical exponents agree well with previous precision estimates.

The Large N Limit and the High Temperature Phase Transition for the ϕ^4 Theory

We study, with various methods (standard large N evaluation of the functional integral for the effective potential, solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equations), the high temperature phase transition for the $N$-component $ϕ^4$ theory in the large $N$ limit. Our results fully confirm a previous investigation of the problem, for arbitrary $N$, with the method of the average potential which employs renormalization group ideas. The phase transition is of the second order with an effectively three-dimensional critical behaviour. }
