Unusually strong electronic correlation and field-induced ordered phase in YbCo$_2$

We report the first study of electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat on YbCo$_2$. The measurements on a single-phased sample of YbCo$_2$ bring no evidence of magnetic ordering down to 0.3 K in a zero magnetic field. The manifestations of low Kondo temperature are observed. The specific heat value divided by temperature, C/T, keeps increasing logarithmically beyond 7 J/mol.K2 with decreasing temperature down to 0.3 K without no sign of magnetic ordering, suggesting a very large electronic specific heat. Analysis of the magnetic specific heat indicates that the large portion of the low-temperature specific heat is not explained simply by the low Kondo temperature but is due to the strong intersite magnetic correlation in both the 3d and 4f electrons. Temperature-dependent measurements under static magnetic fields up to 7 T are carried out, which show the evolution of field-induced transition above 2 T. The transition temperature increases with increasing field, pointing to a ferromagnetic character. The extrapolation of the transition temperature to zero field suggests that YbCo$_2$ is in the very proximity of the quantum critical point. These results indicate that in the unique case of YbCo$_2$, the itinerant electron magnetism of Co 3d-electrons and the Kondo effect within the vicinity of quantum criticality of Yb 4f-local moments can both play a role.

Unusual coexistence of negative/positive charge-transfer in mixed-valence Na$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$

We have investigated the electronic structure of Na$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ using x-ray absorption spectroscopy together with Anderson impurity model calculations with full multiplets. We show Na$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$Cr$_2$O$_4$ taking a novel mixed-valence electronic state in which the positive charge-transfer (CT) and the negative self-doped states coexist. While CaCr$_2$O$_4$ (one end member) exhibits a typical CT nature with strong covalent character, Na substitution causes a self-doped state with an oxygen hole. In NaCr$_2$O$_4$ (the other end member), positive CT and negative self-doped states coexist with equal weight. This unusual electronic state is in sharp contrast to the conventional mixed-valence description, in which the ground state can be described by the mixture of Cr$^{3+}$ ($3d^3$) and Cr$^{4+}$ ($3d^2$).

Universal scaling in the dynamical conductivity of heavy fermion Ce and Yb compounds

Dynamical conductivity spectra s(w) have been measured for a diverse range of heavy-fermion (HF) Ce and Yb compounds. A characteristic excitation peak has been observed in the mid-infrared region of s(w) for all the compounds, and has been analyzed in terms of a simple model based on conduction (c)-f electron hybridized band. A universal scaling is found between the observed peak energies and the estimated c-f hybridization strengths of these HF compounds. This scaling demonstrates that the model of c-f hybridized band can generally and quantitatively describe the charge excitation spectra of a wide range of HF compounds.

Valence and Na content dependences of superconductivity in NaxCoO2.yH2O

Various samples of sodium cobalt oxyhydrate with relatively large amounts of Na$^{+}$ ions were synthesized by a modified soft-chemical process in which a NaOH aqueous solution was added in the final step of the procedure. From these samples, a superconducting phase diagram was determined for a section of a cobalt valence of $\sim$+3.48, which was compared with a previously obtained one of $\sim$+3.40. The superconductivity was significantly affected by the isovalent exchanger of Na$^{+}$ and H$_{3}$O$^{+}$, rather than by variation of Co valence, suggesting the presence of multiple kinds of Fermi surface. Furthermore, the high-field magnetic susceptibility measurements for one sample up to 30 T indicated an upper critical field much higher than the Pauli limit supporting the validity of the spin-triplet pairing mechanism.

Field-induced magnetic ordering in the Haldane system PbNi2V2O8

The Haldane system PbNi2V2O8 was investigated by the temperature dependent magnetization M(T) measurements at fields higher than H_c, with H_c the critical fields necessary to close the Haldane gap. It is revealed that M(T) for H > H_c exhibits a cusp-like minimum at T_{min}, below which M(T) increases with decreasing T having a convex curve. These features have been observed for both $H \parallel c$ and $H \perp c$, with c-axis being parallel to the chain. These data indicate the occurrence of field-induced magnetic ordering around T_{min}. Phase boundaries for $H \parallel c$ and $H \perp c$ do not cross each other, consistent with the theoretical calculation for negative single-ion anisotropy D.

Universality in heavy-fermion systems with general degeneracy

We discuss the relation between the T^{2}-coefficient of electrical resistivity $A$ and the T-linear specific-heat coefficient $γ$ for heavy-fermion systems with general $N$, where $N$ is the degeneracy of quasi-particles. A set of experimental data reveals that the Kadowaki-Woods relation; $A/γ^{2} = 1*10^{-5} {μΩ}(K mol/mJ)^{2}$, collapses remarkably for large-N systems, although this relation has been regarded to be commonly applicable to the Fermi-liquids. Instead, based on the Fermi-liquid theory we propose a new relation; $\tilde{A}/\tildeγ^2=1\times10^{-5}$ with $\tilde{A} = A/(1/2)N(N-1)$ and $\tildeγ = γ/(1/2)N(N-1)$. This new relation exhibits an excellent agreement with the data for whole the range of degenerate heavy-fermions.

Magnetic properties and thermal expansion of YbGa$_x$Ge$_{2-x}$ (0.9 <= x <= 1.5)

The composition dependence of the Yb valence and of the thermal expansion have been studied in the YbGa$_x$Ge$_{2-x}$ system. X-ray diffraction reveals that single-phased samples isostructural to YbGaGe are obtained in the range of 0.9 <= x <= 1.5. The magnetic susceptibility shows that the systems are almost nonmagnetic below room temperature, indicating a stable Yb2+ state for the x range 0.9 <= x <= 1.5. The lattice constants as well as the lattice volume of these systems are found to decrease monotonically with decreasing temperature, suggesting the absence of zero thermal-expansion previously reported for YbGaGe.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Magnetic Properties of gamma-NaxCoO2 (0.70 < x <0.84)

Powder Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ ($0.70\leq x\leq 0.84$) samples were synthesized and characterized carefully by X-ray diffraction analysis, inductive-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, and redox titration. It was proved that $γ$-Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ is formed only in the narrow range of $0.70\leq x\leq 0.78$. Nevertheless, the magnetic properties depend strongly on $x$. We found, for the first time, two characteristic features in the magnetic susceptibility of Na$_{0.78}$CoO$_{2}$, a sharp peak at $T_{p}=16$ K and an anomaly at $T_{k}=9$ K, as well as the transition at $T_{c}=22$ K and the broad maximum at $T_{m}=50$ K which had already been reported. A type of weak ferromagnetic transition seems to occur at $T_{k}$. The transition at $T_{c}$, which is believed to be caused by spin density wave formation, was observed clearly for $x\geq 0.74$ with constant $T_{c}$ and $T_{p}$ independent of $x$. On the other hand, ferromagnetic moment varies systematically depending on $x$. These facts suggest the occurrence of a phase separation at the microscopic level, such as the separation into Na-rich and Na-poor domains due to the segregation of Na ions. The magnetic phase diagram and transition mechanism proposed previously should be reconsidered.

Thermal and Electrical Properties of gamma-NaxCoO2 (0.70 < x < 0.78)

We have performed specific heat and electric resistivity measurements of Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ ($x=0.70$-0.78). Two anomalies have been observed in the specific heat data for $x=0.78$, corresponding to magnetic transitions at $T_{c}=22$ K and $T_{k}\simeq 9$ K reported previously. In the electrical resistivity, a steep decrease at $T_{c}$ and a bending-like variation at $T_{b}$(=120K for $x=0.78$) have been observed. Moreover, we have investigated the $x$-dependence of these parameters in detail. The physical properties of this system are very sensitive to $x$, and the inconsistent results of previous reports can be explained by a small difference in $x$. Furthermore, for a higher $x$ value, a phase separation into Na-rich and Na-poor domains occurs as we previously proposed, while for a lower $x$ value, from characteristic behaviors of the specific heat and the electrical resistivity at the low-temperature region, the system is expected to be in the vicinity of the magnetic instability which virtually exists below $x=0.70$.

Deviation from the Kadowaki-Woods relation in Yb-based intermediate-valent systems

The T^2 coefficient of electrical resistivity, A, is compared with the electronic specific-heat coefficient, γ, for a number of Yb-based compounds. It is revealed that many systems including YbCuAl, YbInCu4, YbAl3 and YbCu5 show A/γ^2 values close to 0.4*10^{-6} μΩcm(mol K/mJ)^2, which is remarkably smaller than that known as the Kadowaki-Woods relation, A/γ^2 = 1.0*10^{-5} μΩcm(mol K/mJ)^2. Empirically, the compounds with the smaller A/γ^2 values appear to show weak intersite magnetic-correlation and/or to have almost fully-degenerated (J = 5/2 or 7/2) ground states.

High-field magnetization of the 3d heavy-fermion system LiV$_2$O$_{4-d}$ (d = 0, 0.08)

Metamagnetic behavior has been observed in LiV2O4 powder sample around 38 T at 4.2 K. On the other hand, magnetization for oxygen deficient LiV2O3.92 shows no indication of metamagnetism up to 40 T, and shows substantially reduced magnetic moment compared to that of LiV2O4. These results suggest that ferromagnetic interaction is strongly enhanced by magnetic fields in LiV2O4, whereas antiferromagnetic interaction is dominant in LiV2O3.92.

Field-Induced Magnetic Ordering in the Quantum Spin System KCuCl$_3$

KCuCl$_3$ is a three-dimensional coupled spin-dimer system and has a singlet ground state with an excitation gap $Δ/k_{\rm B}=31$ K. High-field magnetization measurements for KCuCl$_3$ have been performed in static magnetic fields of up to 30 T and in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 60 T. The entire magnetization curve including the saturation region was obtained at $T=1.3$ K. From the analysis of the magnetization curve, it was found that the exchange parameters determined from the dispersion relations of the magnetic excitations should be reduced, which suggests the importance of the renormalization effect in the magnetic excitations. The field-induced magnetic ordering accompanied by the cusplike minimum of the magnetization was observed as in the isomorphous compound TlCuCl$_3$. The phase boundary was almost independent of the field direction, and is represented by the power law. These results are consistent with the magnon Bose-Einstein condensation picture for field-induced magnetic ordering.
