1RXS J180834.7+101041 is a new cataclysmic variable with non-uniform disc

Results of photometric and spectroscopic investigations of the recently discovered disc cataclysmic variable star 1RXS J180834.7+101041 are presented. Emission spectra of the system show broad double peaked hydrogen and helium emission lines. Doppler maps for the hydrogen lines demonstrate strongly non-uniform emissivity distribution in the disc, similar to that found in IP Peg. It means that the system is a new cataclysmic variable with a spiral density wave in the disc. Masses of the components (M_WD = 0.8 +/- 0.22 M_sun and M_RD = 0.14 +/- 0.02 M_sun), and the orbit inclination (i = 78 +/- 1.5 deg) were estimated using the various well-known relations for cataclysmic variables.

Dark spot, Spiral waves and the SW Sex behaviour: it is all about UX Ursae Majoris

We present an analysis of time-resolved, medium resolution optical spectroscopic observations of UX UMa in the blue (3920-5250 A) and red (6100-7200 A) wavelength ranges, that were obtained in April 1999 and March 2008 respectively. The observed characteristics of our spectra indicate that UX UMa has been in different states during those observations. The blue spectra are very complex. They are dominated by strong and broad single-peaked emission lines of hydrogen. The high-excitation lines of HeII 4686 and the Bowen blend are quite strong as well. All the lines consist of a mixture of absorption and emission components. Using Doppler tomography we have identified four distinct components of the system: the accretion disc, the secondary star, the bright spot from the gas stream/disc impact region, and the unique compact area of absorption in the accretion disc seen as a dark spot in the lower-left quadrant of the tomograms. In the red wavelength range, both the hydrogen (H_alpha) and neutral helium (HeI 6678 and HeI 7065) lines were observed in emission and both exhibited double-peaked profiles. Doppler tomography of these lines reveals spiral structure in the accretion disc, but in contrast to the blue wavelength range, there is no evidence for either the dark spot or the gas stream/disc impact region emission, while the emission from the secondary star is weak. During the observations in 1999, UX UMa showed many of the defining properties of the SW Sex stars. However, all these features almost completely disappeared in 2008. We have also estimated the radial velocity semi-amplitudes K_1 and K_2 and evaluated the system parameters of UX UMa. These estimates are inconsistent with previous values derived by means of analysis of WD eclipse features in the light curve in the different wavelength ranges.

Spectropolarimetry and Infrared Photometry of Magnetic White Dwarfs: Vacuum Polarization Effect or Magnetic CIA?

We present brief review of two probable physical mechanisms that can explain the results of photometric and spectropolarimetric observations of magnetic white dwarfs: vacuum polarization effect into a strong magnetic field and, so-called, magnetic collision induced absorption (magnetic CIA). Both mechanisms provide observed rotation of polarization ellipse and suppression of spectral energy distributions. The results of spectropolarimetric observations of magnetic white dwarfs made at Russian BTA-6m and the results of the near infrared photometric observations with Russian-Italian AZT-24 telescope located at Campo Imperatore are also presented.

Magnetic and Electric Fields around the Black Hole in Cyg X-1

Analysis of polarimetric observations of X-ray binary Cyg X-1/HDE 226868 including the data obtained by BTA-6m allows to estimate the magnetic field magnitude near the inner radius of the accretion disk. The magnetic field magnitude occurred to be $\sim 10^{8}$ G. For power law of radial dependence of magnetic field into an accretion disk we estimates the value of an index of power law. For the Cyg X-1/HDE 226868 system the value of this index appears non less then two. If one accepts as a characteristic scale of a magnetic field generation region the dyadosphere radius, one can estimate the charge magnitude of a black hole. For Cyg X-1 this magnitude appears to be $\sim 0.01M\sqrt{G}$, where M is a black hole mass.

IP Pegasi: Investigation of the accretion disk structure. Searching evidences for spiral shocks in the quiescent accretion disk

We present the results of spectral investigations of the cataclysmic variable IP Peg in quiescence. Optical spectra obtained on the 6-m telescope at the Special Astrophysical Observatory (Russia), and on the 3.5-m telescope at the German-Spanish Astronomical Center (Calar Alto, Spain), have been analysed by means of Doppler tomography and Phase Modelling Technique. From this analysis we conclude that the quiescent accretion disk of IP Peg has a complex structure. There are also explicit indications of spiral shocks. The Doppler maps and the variations of the peak separation of the emission lines confirm this interpretation. We have detected that all the emission lines show a rather considerable asymmetry of their wings varying with time. The wing asymmetry shows quasi-periodic modulations with a period much shorter than the orbital one. This indicates the presence of an emission source in the binary rotating asynchronously with the binary system. We also have found that the brightness of the bright spot changes considerably during one orbital period. The spot becomes brightest at an inferior conjunction, whereas it is almost invisible when it is located on the distant half of the accretion disk. Probably, this phenomenon is due to an anisotropic radiation of the bright spot and an eclipse of the bright spot by the outer edge of the accretion disk.

The photometric and spectral investigation of CI Camelopardalis, an X-ray transient and B[e] star

We combined the results of UBVR photometry of CI Cam taken at Sternberg Astronomical Institute in 1998--2001, and moderate resolution spectroscopy taken at Special Astrophysical Observatory during the same time period. Photometry as well as fluxes of Balmer emissions and of some Fe II emission lines of CI Cam in quiet state reveal a cyclic variation with the period of $1100\pm50^d$. The variation like this may be due to an orbital motion in a wide pair with a giant star companion that exhibits the reflection effect on its side faced to a compact companion. The V-band photometry also confirms the pre-outburst 11.7 day period found by Miroshnichenko earlier, but with a lower amplitude of 3 per cent. The possibility of identity of this photometric period with the period of jet's rotation in the VLA radio map of the object CI Cam was investigated. The radio map modelling reveals the inclination of the jet rotation axis to the line of sight, $i = 35-40^o$, the angle between the rotation axis and the direction of ejection of the jet, $θ= 7-10^o$, and jet's spatial velocity of 0.23--0.26c. Equivalent widths and fluxes of various spectral lines show different amplitudes of changes during the outburst, and essentially distinct behaviour in quiescence. Five types of such behaviour were revealed, that indicates the strong stratification of a gas and dust envelope round the system . The time lag of strengthening of 50--250$^d$ in the forbidden line of nitrogen [N II] was found relatively to the X-ray outburst maximum.

Detection of spiral structure of the quiescent accretion disk of IP Pegasi

We present the results of the spectral investigations of IP Peg in quiescence. Optical spectra obtained on 6-m telescope at the Special Astrophysical Observatory (Russia), and on the 3.5-m telescope at the German-Spanish Astronomical Center (Calar Alto, Spain), have been analysed by means of Doppler tomography and phase modeling technique. This analysis has allowed us to make conclusions, that the quiescent accretion disk of IP Peg has a complicated structure. Equally with the bright spot originated in the region of interaction between the stream and the disk's particles, there are also explicit indications of the spiral shocks. We also have found that the brightness of the bright spot considerably oscillates during orbital period. The spot becomes brightest at an inferior conjunction. On the contrary, the spot is almost not visible when it is located on a distant half of the accretion disk. Apparently, it is connected to an eclipse of the bright spot by an outer edge of the accretion disk.

Spiral shocks in the accretion disk of the dwarf nova U Geminorum

We present a study of the observable spectral manifestations associated with spiral shocks within quiescent accretion disks and compare them with observations of the dwarf nova U Geminorum. Our results indicate that the orbital behaviour of the hydrogen emission line profile in the spectrum of U Gem can be reproduced via a simple model of the accretion disk with two symmetrically located spiral shocks with the spiral angle theta about 60 degrees. This provides for the first time convincing evidence for the existence of spiral shocks in the accretion disk of a cataclysmic variable in quiescence.

Modelling emission line profiles of a non-uniform accretion disk

Techniques of calculation of emission line profiles formed in a non--uniform accretion disk is presented. Change of the profile shape as a function of phase turn of the disk with a bright spot on the surface is analysed. A possibility of a unambiguous determination of the disk and spot parameters is considered, the accuracy of their determination is estimated. The results of calculations show that the analysis of spectra obtained at different phases of the orbital period gives a possibility of estimating the basic parameters of the spot (such as geometric size and luminosity) and to investigate the structure of the accretion disk.

New index formulas as a meromorphic generalization of the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet theorem

Laplace operators perturbed by meromorphic potential on the Riemann and separated type Klein surfaces are constructed and their indices are calculated by two different ways. The topological expressions for the indices are obtained from the study of spectral properties of the operators. Analytical expressions are provided by the Heat Kernel approach in terms of the functional integrals. As a result two formulae connecting characteristics of meromorphic (real meromorphic) functions and topological properties of Riemann (separated type Klein) surfaces are derived.
