Coherent excitation of two-state system by a Lorentzian filed

This work presents an analytic description of the coherent excitation of a two-state quantum system by an external field with a Lorentzian temporal shape and a constant frequency. An exact analytical solution for the differential equation of the model is derived in terms of Confluent Heun functions. Also a very accurate analytic approximation to the transition probability is derived by using the Dykhne-Davis-Pechukas approach. This approximation provides analytic expressions for the frequency and amplitude of the probability oscillations.

Time-efficient implementation of quantum search with qudits

We propose a simpler and more efficient scheme for the implementation of the multi-valued Grover's quantum search. The multi-valued search generalizes the original Grover's search by replacing qubits with qudits --- quantum systems of $d$ discrete states. The qudit database is exponentially larger than the qubit database and thus it requires fewer particles to control. The Hadamard gate, which is the key elementary gate in the qubit implementation of Grover's search, is replaced by a $d$-dimensional (complex-valued) unitary matrix $F$, the only condition for which is to have a column of equal moduli elements irrespective of their phases; it can be realized through any physical interaction, which achieves an equal-weight superposition state. An example of such a transformation is the $d$-dimensional discrete Fourier transform, used in earlier proposals; however, its construction is much more costly than that of the far simpler matrix $F$. We present examples of how such a transform $F$ can be constructed in realistic qudit systems in a \emph{single} interaction step.

Broadband sum frequency generation via chirped quasi-phase-matching

An efficient broadband sum frequency generation (SFG) technique using the two collinear optical parametric processes ω3=ω1+ω2 and ω4=ω1+ω3 is proposed. The technique uses chirped quasi-phase-matched gratings, which, in the undepleted pump approximation, make SFG analogous to adiabatic population transfer in three-state systems with crossing energies in quantum physics. If the local modulation period %for aperiodically poled quasi-phase-matching first makes the phase match occur for ω3 and then for ω4 SFG processes then the energy is converted adiabatically to the ω4 field. Efficient SFG of the ω4 field is also possible by the opposite direction of the local modulation sweep; then transient SFG of the ω3 field is strongly reduced. Most of these features remain valid in the nonlinear regime of depleted pump.

Microscopic description of dissipative dynamics of a level crossing transition

We analyze the effect of a dissipative bosonic environment on the Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg-Majorana (LZSM) level crossing model by using a microscopic approach to derive the relevant master equation. For an environment at zero temperature and weak dissipation our microscopic approach confirms the independence of the survival probability on the decay rate that has been predicted earlier by the simple phenomenological LZSM model. For strong decay the microscopic approach predicts a notable increase of the survival probability, which signals dynamical decoupling of the initial state. Unlike the phenomenological model our approach makes it possible to study the dependence of the system dynamics on the temperature of the environment. In the limit of very high temperature we find that the dynamics is characterized by a very strong dynamical decoupling of the initial state - temperature-induced quantum Zeno effect.

High-fidelity local addressing of trapped ions and atoms by composite sequences of laser pulses

A vital requirement for a quantum computer is the ability to locally address, with high fidelity, any of its qubits without affecting their neighbors. We propose an addressing method using composite sequences of laser pulses, which reduces dramatically the addressing error in a lattice of closely spaced atoms or ions, and at the same time significantly enhances the robustness of qubit manipulations. To this end, we design novel high-fidelity composite pulses for the most important single-qubit operations. In principle, this method allows one to beat the diffraction limit, for only atoms situated in a small spatial region around the center of the laser beam are excited, well within the laser beam waist.

Propagation of light polarization in a birefringent medium: Exact analytic models

Driving the analogy between the coherent excitation of a two-state quantum system and the torque equation of motion, we present exact analytic solutions to different models for manipulation of polarization in birefringent medium. These models include the one-dimensional model, the Landau-Zener model, and the Demkov-Kunike model. We also give an example for robust, broadband manipulation of polarization by suitably tailoring the birefringence vector.

Wireless adiabatic power transfer

We propose a technique for efficient mid-range wireless power transfer between two coils, by adapting the process of adiabatic passage for a coherently driven two-state quantum system to the realm of wireless energy transfer. The proposed technique is shown to be robust to noise, resonant constraints, and other interferences that exist in the neighborhood of the coils.

Broadband adiabatic conversion of light polarization

A broadband technique for robust adiabatic rotation and conversion of light polarization is proposed. It uses the analogy between the equation describing the polarization state of light propagating through an optically anisotropic medium and the Schrodinger equation describing coherent laser excitation of a three-state atom. The proposed techniques is analogous to the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) technique in quantum optics; it is applicable to a wide range of frequencies and it is robust to variations in the ropagation length.

Counterintuitive transitions between crossing energy levels

We calculate analytically the probabilities for intuitive and counterintuitive transitions in a three-state system, in which two parallel energies are crossed by a third, tilted energy. The state with the tilted energy is coupled to the other two states in a chainwise linkage pattern with constant couplings of finite duration. The probability for a counterintuitive transition is found to increase with the square of the coupling and decrease with the squares of the interaction duration, the energy splitting between the parallel energies, and the tilt (chirp) rate. Physical examples of this model can be found in coherent atomic excitation and optical shielding in cold atomic collisions.

Extension of the Morris-Shore transformation to multilevel ladders

We describe situations in which chains of N degenerate quantum energy levels, coupled by time-dependent external fields, can be replaced by independent sets of chains of length N, N-1,...,2 and sets of uncoupled single states. The transformation is a generalization of the two-level Morris-Shore transformation [J.R. Morris and B.W. Shore, Phys. Rev. A 27, 906 (1983)]. We illustrate the procedure with examples of three-level chains.

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage into continuum

We propose a technique which produces nearly complete ionization of the population of a discrete state coupled to a continuum by a two-photon transition via a lossy intermediate state whose lifetime is much shorter than the interaction duration. We show that using counterintuitively ordered pulses, as in stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP), wherein the pulse coupling the intermediate state to the continuum precedes and partly overlaps the pulse coupling the initial and intermediate states, greatly increases the ionization signal and strongly reduces the population loss due to spontaneous emission through the lossy state. For strong spontaneous emission from that state, however, the ionization is never complete because the dark state required for STIRAP does not exist. We demonstrate that this drawback can be eliminated almost completely by creating a laser-induced continuum structure (LICS) by embedding a third discrete state into the continuum with a third control laser. This LICS introduces some coherence into the continuum, which enables a STIRAP-like population transfer into the continuum. A highly accurate analytic description is developed and numerical results are presented for Gaussian pulse shapes.

Dephasing effects on stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in tripod configurations

We present an analytic description of the effects of dephasing processes on stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a tripod quantum system. To this end, we develop an effective two-level model. Our analysis makes use of the adiabatic approximation in the weak dephasing regime. An effective master equation for a two-level system formed by two dark states is derived, where analytic solutions are obtained by utilizing the Demkov-Kunike model. From these, it is found that the fidelity for the final coherent superposition state decreases exponentially for increasing dephasing rates. Depending on the pulse ordering and for adiabatic evolution the pulse delay can have an inverse effect.

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a $Λ$-system in the presence of quantum noise

We exploit a microscopically derived master equation for the study of STIRAP in the presence of decay from the auxiliary level toward the initial and final state, and compare our results with the predictions obtained from a phenomenological model previously used [P. A. Ivanov, N. V. Vitanov, and K. Bergmann, Phys. Rev. A 72, 053412 (2005)]. It is shown that our approach predicts a much higher efficiency. The effects of temperature are also taken into account, proving that in b-STIRAP thermal pumping can increase the efficiency of the population transfer.

Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in an open quantum system: Master equation approach

A master equation approach to the study of environmental effects in the adiabatic population transfer in three-state systems is presented. A systematic comparison with the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian approach [N. V. Vitanov and S. Stenholm, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 56}, 1463 (1997)] shows that in the weak coupling limit the two treatments lead to essentially the same results. Instead, in the strong damping limit the predictions are quite different: in particular the counterintuitive sequences in the STIRAP scheme turn out to be much more efficient than expected before. This point is explained in terms of quantum Zeno dynamics.

Scalable quantum search using trapped ions

We propose a scalable implementation of Grover's quantum search algorithm in a trapped-ion quantum information processor. The system is initialized in an entangled Dicke state by using simple adiabatic techniques. The inversion-about-average and the oracle operators take the form of single off-resonant laser pulses, addressing, respectively, all and half of the ions in the trap. This is made possible by utilizing the physical symmetrie of the trapped-ion linear crystal. The physical realization of the algorithm represents a dramatic simplification: each logical iteration (oracle and inversion about average) requires only two physical interaction steps, in contrast to the large number of concatenated gates required by previous approaches. This does not only facilitate the implementation, but also increases the overall fidelity of the algorithm.

Rapid adiabatic passage without level crossing

We present a method for achieving complete population transfer in a two-state quantum system via adiabatic time evolution in which, contrary to conventional rapid adiabatic passage produced by chirped pulses, there occurs no crossing of diabatic energy curves: there is no sign change of the detuning. Instead, we use structured pulses, in which, in addition to satisfying conditions for adiabatic evolution, there occurs a sign change of the Rabi frequency when the detuning is zero. We present simulations that offer simple geometrical interpretation of the two-dimensional motion of the Bloch vector for this system, illustrating how both complete population inversion and complete population return occur for different choices of structured pulses.
