Searches for Heavy Neutral Leptons at FCC-ee in final states including a muon

The sensitivity of the CERN FCC-ee collider to the production of heavy neutral leptons (HNL) is investigated. The study focuses on a simplified model with a single low-mass HNL mixing with a muon, and addresses the fully leptonic and semileptonic decay modes of the HNL. Complete Monte Carlo analyses of signal and background based on a parametrised detector simulation are performed for the FCC-ee run at the $Z$-pole, resulting in an estimate of the intervals of the mixing parameter for which the FCC-ee will have a 95% CL sensitivity as a function of the HNL mass.

Self-similar solution for laminar bubbly flow evolving from a vertical plate

The development of a bubble plume from a vertical gas-evolving electrode is driven by buoyancy and hydrodynamic bubble dispersion. This canonical fluid mechanics problem is relevant for both thermal and electrochemical processes. We adopt a mixture model formulation for the two-phase flow, considering variable density (beyond Boussinesq), viscosity and hydrodynamic bubble dispersion. Introducing a new change of coordinates, inspired by the Lees-Dorodnitsyn transformation, we obtain a new self-similar solution for the laminar boundary layer equations. The results predict a wall gas fraction and gas plume thickness that increase with height to the power of 1/5 before asymptotically reaching unity and scaling with height to the power 2/5, respectively. The vertical velocity scales with height to the power of 3/5. Our analysis shows that self-similarity is only possible if gas conservation is entirely formulated in terms of the gas-specific volume instead of the gas fraction.

Solar cell efficiency, diode factor and interface recombination: insights from photoluminescence

Metastable defects can decisively influence the diode factor and thus the efficiency of a solar cell. The diode factor is also influenced by the doping level and the recombination mechanisms in the solar cell. Here we quantify how the various parameters change the diode factor by photoluminescence measurements and simulations. In addition, we show that backside recombination reduces the open circuit voltage in CuInSe2 solar cells by more than 40 mV. Passivation by a Ga gradient is shown to be as efficient as a passivation by dielectric layers. Increased backside recombination reduces the diode factor, not because of less metastable defect transformation but because of a sublinear increase in photo generated carriers with excitation. This reduction in diode factor is unwanted, since the increased recombination reduces the voltage. A higher doping level, on the other hand, reduces the diode factor, thereby increasing the fill factor, and at the same time increases the voltage.

An energy-preserving level set method for multiphase flows

The computation of multiphase flows presents a subtle energetic equilibrium between potential (i.e., surface) and kinetic energies. The use of traditional interface-capturing schemes provides no control over such a dynamic balance. In the spirit of the wellknown symmetry-preserving and mimetic schemes, whose physics-compatible discretizations rely upon preserving the underlying mathematical structures of the space, we identify the corresponding structure and propose a new discretization strategy for curvature. The new scheme ensures conservation of mechanical energy (i.e., surface plus kinetic) up to temporal integration. Inviscid numerical simulations are performed to show the robustness of such a method.
