Fermiology of Sr4V2O6Fe2As2: Quasi-Nested Fe vs Mott-Insulating V Orbitals

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of a new iron-based superconductor Sr4V2O6Fe2As2. While V 3d orbitals are found to be in a Mott insulator state and show an incoherent peak at ~ 1 eV below the Fermi level, the dispersive Fe 3d bands form several hole- and electron-like Fermi surfaces (FSs), some of which are quasi-nested by the (pi, 0) wave vector. This differs from the local density approximation (LDA) calculations, which predict non-nested FSs for this material. However, LDA+U with a large effective Hubbard energy U on V 3d electrons can reproduce the experimental observation reasonably well. The observed fermiology in superconducting Sr4V2O6Fe2As2 strongly supports that (pi, 0) interband scattering between quasi-nested FSs is indispensable to superconductivity in pnictides.

Effect of final state interactions on particle production in $d$+Au collisions at RHIC

We show that particle species dependence of enhanced hadron production at intermediate transverse momentum (p_{T}) for d+Au collisions at RHIC can be understood in terms of the hadronic rescatterings in the final state. A multiphase transport model (AMPT) with two different hadronization mechanisms: string fragmentation or parton coalescence, is used in our study. When the hadrons are formed from string fragmentation, the subsequent hadronic rescatterings will result in particle mass dependence of nuclear modification factor R_{CP}, which is consistent with the present experimental data. On the other hand, in the framework of parton coalescence, the mass dependence disappears and the strangeness plays an important role. Both mechanisms failed to reproduce the p_{T} dependence of R_{CP} of pion, indicating that initial-state effects might be also important in such collisions.

Energy Dependence of High Moments for Net-proton Distributions

High moments of multiplicity distributions of conserved quantities are predicted to be sensitive to critical fluctuations. To understand the effect of the complicated non-critical physics backgrounds on the proposed observable, we have studied various moments of net-proton distributions with AMPT, Hijing, Therminator and UrQMD models, in which no QCD critical point physics is implemented. It is found that the centrality evolution of various moments of net-proton distributions can be uniformly described by a superposition of emission sources. In addition, in the absence of critical phenomena, some moment products of net-proton distribution, related to the baryon number susceptibilities ratio in Lattice QCD calculation, are predicted to be constant as a function of the collision centrality. We argue that a non-monotonic dependence of the moment products as a function collision centrality and the beam energy may be used to locate the QCD critical point.

Topology studies of hydrodynamics using two particle correlation analysis

The effects of fluctuating initial conditions are studied in the context of relativistic heavy ion collisions where a rapidly evolving system is formed. Two particle correlation analysis is applied to events generated with the NEXSPHERIO hydrodynamic code, starting with fluctuating non-smooth initial conditions (IC). Results show that the non-smoothness in the IC survives the hydro-evolution and can be seen as topological features of the angular correlation function of the particles emerging from the evolving system. A long range correlation is observed in the longitudinal direction and in the azimuthal direction a double peak structure is observed in the opposite direction to the trigger particle. This analysis provides clear evidence that these are signatures of the combined effect of tubular structures present in the IC and the proceeding collective dynamics of the hot and dense medium.

Excitations of Ellipsoid Packings near Jamming

We study the vibrational modes of three-dimensional jammed packings of soft ellipsoids of revolution as a function of particle aspect ratio $ε$ and packing fraction. At the jamming transition for ellipsoids, as distinct from the idealized case using spheres where $ε= 1$, there are many unconstrained and non-trivial rotational degrees of freedom. These constitute a set of zero-frequency modes that are gradually mobilized into a new rotational band as $|ε- 1|$ increases. Quite surprisingly, as this new band is separated from zero frequency by a gap, and lies below the onset frequency for translational vibrations, $ω^*$, the presence of these new degrees of freedom leaves unaltered the basic scenario that the translational spectrum is determined only by the average contact number. Indeed, $ω^*$ depends solely on coordination as it does for compressed packings of spheres. We also discuss the regime of large $|ε- 1|$, where the two bands merge.

Probe the QCD phase diagram with ϕ-mesons in high energy nuclear collisions

High-energy nuclear collision provide a unique tool to study the strongly interacting medium. Recent results from the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) on ϕ-meson production has revealed the formation of a dense partonic medium. The medium constituents are found to exhibit collective behaviour initiated due to partonic interactions in the medium. We present a brief review of the recent results on ϕproduction in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC. One crucial question is where, in the phase diagram, does the transition happen for the matter changing from hadronic to partonic degrees of freedom. We discuss how ϕ-meson elliptic flow in heavy-ion collisions can be used for the search of the QCD phase boundary.

Initial orientation effect and selecting desired events in 520AMeV/u U-U collisions

How to select out those collisions with the desired geometry such as tip-tip and/or body-body in experiment is one key point for performing high energy UU collisions. With a relativistic transport model, we performed a simulation for deformed UU collision with vast different orientations at CSR energy area corresponding to the high net-baryon density region in QCD phase diagram. By investigating the centrality and initial collision orientation dependence of the center baryon density, we found that the tip-tip like UU collisions with extended high density phase, which is very important for studying the nuclear EoS of high baryon density matter and the possible end-point of the phase boundary, are those events with small initial orientations ($\leq20^{0}$) for bath projectile and target in reaction plane and small impact parameter ($\leq2.6fm$). We pointed out quantificationally two observations -- multiplicity of forward neutron and nuclear stopping power that both allows us to select out those most interesting events (i.e. tip-tip like), which will be very helpful for the future experiments at performing UU collisions.

Reversible plasticity in amorphous materials

A fundamental assumption in our understanding of material rheology is that when microscopic deformations are reversible, the material responds elastically to external loads. Plasticity, i.e. dissipative and irreversible macroscopic changes in a material, is assumed to be the consequence of irreversible microscopic events. Here we show direct evidence for reversible plastic events at the microscopic scale in both experiments and simulations of two-dimensional foam. In the simulations, we demonstrate a link between reversible plastic rearrangement events and pathways in the potential energy landscape of the system. These findings represent a fundamental change in our understanding of materials--microscopic reversibility does not necessarily imply elasticity.

The effect of partonic wind on charm quark correlations in high-energy nuclear collisions

In high-energy collisions, massive heavy quarks are produced back-to-back initially and they are sensitive to early dynamical conditions. The strong collective partonic wind from the fast expanding quark-gluon plasma created in high-energy nuclear collisions modifies the correlation pattern significantly. As a result, the angular correlation function for D$\bar{\rm D}$ pairs is suppressed at the angle $Δϕ=π$. While the hot and dense medium in collisions at RHIC ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV) can only smear the initial back-to-back D$\bar {\rm D}$ correlation, a clear and strong near side D$\bar{\rm D}$ correlation is expected at LHC ($\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5500$ GeV).

D-Dbar Correlations as a sensitive probe for thermalization in high-energy nuclear collisions

We propose to measure azimuthal correlations of heavy-flavor hadrons to address the status of thermalization at the partonic stage of light quarks and gluons in high-energy nuclear collisions. In particular, we show that hadronic interactions at the late stage cannot significantly disturb the initial back-to-back azimuthal correlations of DDbar pairs. Thus, a decrease or the complete absence of these initial correlations does indicate frequent interactions of heavy-flavor quarks and also light partons in the partonic stage, which are essential for the early thermalization of light partons.

Identify bottom contribution in non-photonic electron spectra and \vv\ from \AuAu collisions at RHIC

We present a study on the spectra and elliptic flow v2 for heavy flavor (charm and bottom) decayed electrons provided the relative contributions of charm and bottom hadrons from the PYTHIA calculations. We made a simultaneous fit to both measured non-photonic electron spectra and v2 distributions. The results suggest that the bottom contribution is not dominant for electron pt<5 GeV/c in the 200 GeV Au+Au collisions.

Anisotropic flow at RHIC: How unique is the number-of-constituent-quark scaling?

The transverse momentum dependence of the anisotropic flow $v_2$ for $π$, $K$, nucleon, $Λ$, $Ξ$ and $Ω$ is studied for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200$ GeV within two independent string-hadron transport approaches (RQMD and UrQMD). Although both models reach only 60% of the absolute magnitude of the measured $v_2$, they both predict the particle type dependence of $v_2$, as observed by the RHIC experiments: $v_2$ exhibits a hadron-mass hierarchy (HMH) in the low $p_T$ region and a number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) dependence in the intermediate $p_T$ region. The failure of the hadronic models to reproduce the absolute magnitude of the observed $v_2$ indicates that transport calculations of heavy ion collisions at RHIC must incorporate interactions among quarks and gluons in the early, hot and dense phase. The presence of an NCQ scaling in the string-hadron model results suggests that the particle-type dependencies observed in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate $p_T$ might be related to the hadronic cross sections in vacuum rather than to the hadronization process itself.

Collective flow of open and hidden charm in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV

We study the collective flow of open charm mesons and charmonia in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV within the hadron-string-dynamics (HSD) transport approach. The detailed studies show that the coupling of $D,\bar{D}$ mesons to the light hadrons leads to comparable directed and elliptic flow as for the light mesons. This also holds approximately for $J/Ψ$ mesons since more than 50% of the final charmonia for central and mid-central collisions stem from $D+\bar{D}$ induced reactions in the transport calculations. The transverse momentum spectra of $D,\bar{D}$ mesons and $J/Ψ$'s are only very moderately changed by the (pre-)hadronic interactions in HSD which can be traced back to the collective flow generated by elastic interactions with the light hadrons.

Centrality Dependence of Thermal Parameters Deduced from Hadron Multiplicities in Au + Au Collisions at sqrt{s_{NN}} = 130 GeV

We analyse the centrality dependence of thermal parameters deduced from hadron m ultiplicities in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 130 GeV$. While the chemical freeze-out temperature and chemical potentials are found to be roughly centrality-independent, the strangeness saturation factor $γ_S$ increases with participant number towards unity, supporting the assumption of equilibrium freeze-out conditions in central collisions.

Baryon Junction Loops in HIJING/BBv2.0 and the Baryon/Meson Anomaly at RHIC

A new version, v2.0, of the HIJING/BB Monte Carlo nuclear collision event generator is introduced in order to explore further the possible role of baryon junctions loops in the baryon/meson anomaly (2 $< p_{T} <$ 5 GeV/c) observed in 200A GeV Au+Au reactions at RHIC. We show that junction loops with an enhanced intrinsic $k_T\approx 1$ GeV/c transverse momentum kick may provide a partial explanation of the anomaly as well as other important baryon stopping observables.

Resonance decay effects on anisotropy parameters

We present the elliptic flow $v_2$ of pions produced from resonance decays. The transverse momentum $p_T$ spectra of the parent particles are taken from thermal model fits and their $v_2$ are fit under the assumption that they follow number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling expected from quark-coalescence models. The $v_2$ of pions from resonance particle decays is found to be similar to the measured pion $v_2$. We also propose the measurement of electron $v_2$ as a means to extract open-charm $v_2$ and investigate whether a thermalized system of quarks and gluons (a quark-gluon plasma) is created in collisions of Au nuclei at RHIC.

The Mini-Jet Scale and Energy Loss at RHIC in the HIJING and RQMD Models

The original default mini-jet scale p_0=2 GeV/c and energy loss, dE/dx=2 GeV/fm in HIJING lead to a too rapid growth of the multiplicity with energy. RQMD model without mini-jet leads on the other hand to a too slowly increasing multiplicity with energy. We show that a slight increase of p_0 from the default 2.0 GeV/c at sqrt(s)=130A GeV to 2.2 GeV/c at sqrt{s}=200A GeV is sufficient to account for the bulk observables. Jet quenching of pi^0 above p_T>4 GeV/c at 200A GeV is found to be well reproduced in central Au+Au by the original HIJING default prediction. However, the effective surface emission in the HIJING model formulation of energy loss over-predicts the quenching in more peripheral collisions. Neither HIJING nor HIJING/B{bar}B can account for the observed anomalous excess of moderate p_T<4 GeV/c baryons. The agreement of RQMD with data in this p_T region is shown to be fortuitous because, without mini-jets, it fails to reproduce the p+p spectrum.
