Theory-agnostic framework for inspiral tests of general relativity with higher-harmonic gravitational waves

Recent gravitational wave observations show evidence for the presence of higher harmonics, thus possibly indicating that these waves were generated in the inspiral of compact objects with asymmetric mass ratios. Signals with higher harmonics contain a trove of information that can lead to a better estimation of system parameters and possibly to more stringent tests of general relativity. Gravitational wave model that include higher harmonics, however, have only been developed within general relativity, while models to test theory-agnostic deviations from general relativity have been purely based on the signal's dominant mode. We here extend the parameterized post-Einsteinian framework to include the $\ell=2, 3$ and $4$ higher harmonics to first post-Newtonian order, therefore providing a ready-to-use Fourier-domain waveform model for tests of general relativity with higher harmonics. We find that the deformations to the higher harmonics of the Fourier phase can be easily mapped to the deformation of the dominant harmonic, while the deformations to the higher-harmonics of the Fourier amplitude in general cannot in a theory-agnostic way. Nonetheless, we develop a simple ansatz for the deformations of the waveform amplitude (through a re-scaling deformation of the time-domain amplitude) that both minimizes the number of independent amplitude deformations parameters and captures the predictions of all known modified theories to date.

Semianalytical estimates of scattering thresholds and gravitational radiation in ultrarelativistic black hole encounters

Ultrarelativistic collisions of black holes are ideal gedanken experiments to study the nonlinearities of general relativity. In this paper we use semianalytical tools to better understand the nature of these collisions and the emitted gravitational radiation. We explain many features of the energy spectra extracted from numerical relativity simulations using two complementary semianalytical calculations. In the first calculation we estimate the radiation by a "zero-frequency limit" analysis of the collision of two point particles with finite impact parameter. In the second calculation we replace one of the black holes by a point particle plunging with arbitrary energy and impact parameter into a Schwarzschild black hole, and we explore the multipolar structure of the radiation paying particular attention to the near-critical regime. We also use a geodesic analogy to provide qualitative estimates of the dependence of the scattering threshold on the black hole spin and on the dimensionality of the spacetime.

Cross section, final spin and zoom-whirl behavior in high-energy black hole collisions

We study the collision of two highly boosted equal mass, nonrotating black holes with generic impact parameter. We find such systems to exhibit zoom-whirl behavior when fine tuning the impact parameter. Near the threshold of immediate merger the remnant black hole Kerr parameter can be near maximal (a/M about 0.95) and the radiated energy can be as large as 35% of the center-of-mass energy.
