Ultrafast optical polarimetry in magnetic phases of Kondo semi metal CeSb

We investigated photoinduced ultrafast transient dynamics in different magnetic phases in CeSb by means of the time resolved magneto-optical spectroscopy. We observe a distinctive coherent oscillations in the ground-state antiferromagnetic (AF) phase and the high-magnetic field ferromagnetic (F) phase. While the AF-phase oscillations frequencies match the recent Raman scattering findings the F-phase oscillation frequency does not correspond to the previously observed magnetic excitation. The large spectroscopic factor, g=3.94, and optical polarization properties suggest that it corresponds to a previously undetected Ce^{3+} coherent crystal-field state excitation. The AF-phase oscillations show no magnetic field dependence so their lattice origin cannot be entirely excluded. The non-oscillatory part of the transients is qualitatively similar in all investigated magnetic phases with a faster sub-picosecond dynamics in the ferromagnetic and ferro-para-magnetic phases and is attributed to differences in the electronic structure, which affect the photo-excited quasiparticle energy relaxation kinetics.

MgB2 single crystals substituted with Li and with Li-C: Structural and superconducting properties

The effect of Li substitution for Mg and of Li-C co-substitution on the superconducting properties and crystal structure of MgB2 single crystals has been investigated. It has been found that hole doping with Li decreases the superconducting transition temperature Tc, but at a slower rate than electron doping with C or Al. Tc of MgB2 crystals with simultaneously substituted Li for Mg and C for B decreases more than in the case where C is substituted alone. This means that holes introduced by Li cannot counterbalance the effect of decrease of Tc caused by introduction of electrons coming from C. The possible reason of it can be that holes coming from Li occupy the pi band while electrons coming from C fill the sigma band. The temperature dependences of the upper critical field Hc2 for Al and Li substituted crystals with the same Tc show a similar dHc2/dT slope at Tc and a similar Hc2(T) behavior, despite of much different substitution level. This indicates that the mechanism controlling Hc2 and Tc is similar in both hole and electron doped crystals. Electrical transport measurements show an increase of resistivity both in Li substituted crystals and in Li and C co-substituted crystals. This indicates enhanced scattering due to defects introduced by substitutions including distortion of the lattice. The observed behavior can be explained as a result of two effects, influencing both Tc and Hc2. The first one is doping related to the changes in the carrier concentration, which may lead to the decrease or to the increase of Tc. The second one is related to the introduction of new scattering centers leading to the modification of the interband and/or intraband scattering and therefore, to changes in the superconducting gaps and to the reduction of Tc.

Local Tunneling Study of Three-Dimensional Order Parameter in the $π$-band of Al-doped MgB$_2$ Single Crystals

We have performed local tunneling spectroscopy on high quality Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_x$B$_2$ single crystals by means of Variable Temperature Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy (STS) in magnetic field up to 3 Tesla. Single gap conductance spectra due to c-axis tunneling were extensively measured, probing different amplitudes of the three-dimensional $Δ_π$ as a function of Al content. Temperature and magnetic field dependences of the conductance spectra were studied in S-I-N configuration: the effect of the doping resulted in a monotonous reduction of the locally measured $T_C$ down to 24K for x=0.2. On the other hand, we have found that the gap amplitude shows a maximum value $Δ_π= 2.3$ meV for x=0.1, while the $Δ_π/ T_C$ ratio increases monotonously with doping. The locally measured upper critical field was found to be strongly related to the gap amplitude, showing the maximum value $H_{c2}\simeq3T$ for x=0.1 substituted samples. For this Al concentration the data revealed some spatial inhomogeneity in the distribution of $Δ_π$ on nanometer scale.

Two regimes in the magnetic field response of superconducting MgB$_2$

Using Scanning Tunneling Microscope at low temperature we explore the superconducting phase diagram in the $π$-band of the two-band superconductor MgB$_2$. In this band the peculiar shape of the local tunneling spectra and their dynamics in the magnetic field reveal the complex character of the quasiparticle density of states (DOS). The gap in the DOS is first rapidly filled with states in raising the magnetic field up to 0.5 T and then slowly approaches the normal state value : The gap is observed up to 2 T. Such a change in the DOS dynamics suggests the existence of two terms in the DOS of the $π$-band: a first one, reflecting an intrinsic superconductivity in the band and a second one, originating from an inter-band coupling to the $σ$-band. Our findings allow a deeper understanding of the unique phase diagram of MgB$_2$.
