The CCFM Monte Carlo generator CASCADE 2.2.0

CASCADE is a full hadron level Monte Carlo event generator for ep, γp and p\bar{p} and pp processes, which uses the CCFM evolution equation for the initial state cascade in a backward evolution approach supplemented with off - shell matrix elements for the hard scattering. A detailed program description is given, with emphasis on parameters the user wants to change and variables which completely specify the generated events.

Methods for Reducing False Alarms in Searches for Compact Binary Coalescences in LIGO Data

The LIGO detectors are sensitive to a variety of noise transients of non-astrophysical origin. Instrumental glitches and environmental disturbances increase the false alarm rate in the searches for gravitational waves. Using times already identified when the interferometers produced data of questionable quality, or when the channels that monitor the interferometer indicated non-stationarity, we have developed techniques to safely and effectively veto false triggers from the compact binary coalescences (CBCs) search pipeline.

Direct photon production at HERA, the Tevatron and the LHC

We review several most recent prompt-photon measurements at HERA and the Tevatron and discuss their implication for future measurements at the LHC. A comparison to Monte Carlo models, as well as to NLO QCD predictions based on the standard DGLAP and the kT-factorization approaches is discussed. Effects from renormalization and factorization scale uncertainties, as well as uncertainties on the gluon density distribution inside a proton are discussed.

The LSC Glitch Group : Monitoring Noise Transients during the fifth LIGO Science Run

The LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC) glitch group is part of the LIGO detector characterization effort. It consists of data analysts and detector experts who, during and after science runs, collaborate for a better understanding of noise transients in the detectors. Goals of the glitch group during the fifth LIGO science run (S5) included (1) offline assessment of the detector data quality, with focus on noise transients, (2) veto recommendations for astrophysical analysis and (3) feedback to the commissioning team on anomalies seen in gravitational wave and auxiliary data channels. Other activities included the study of auto-correlation of triggers from burst searches, stationarity of the detector noise and veto studies. The group identified causes for several noise transients that triggered false alarms in the gravitational wave searches; the times of such transients were identified and vetoed from the data generating the LSC astrophysical results.

Search for Chargino and Neutralino Production at sqrt(s) = 192-209 GeV at LEP

Approximately 438 pb-1 of e+e- data from the OPAL detector, taken with the LEP collider running at centre-of-mass energies of 192-209 Gev, are analyzed to search for evidence of chargino pair production, e+e- -> tilde chi^+_1 tilde chi^-_1, or neutralino associated production, e+e- -> tilde chi^0_2 tilde chi^0_1. Limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the product of the cross-section for the process e+e- -> tilde chi^+_1 tilde chi^-_1 and its branching ratios to topologies containing jets and missing energy, of jest with a lepton and missing energy, and on the product of the cross-section for e+e- -> tilde chi^0_2 tilde chi^0_1 and its branching ratio to jets. R-parity conservation is assumed throughout this paper. When these results are interpreted in the context of the Constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, limits are also set on the masses of the tilde chi^+-_1, tilde chi^0_1 and tilde chi^0_2, and regions of the parameter space of the model are ruled out. Nearly model-independent limits are also set at the 95% confidence level on sigma(e+e- -> tilde chi^+_1 tilde chi^-_1) with the assumption that each chargino decays via a W boson, and on sigma(e+e- -> tilde chi^0_2 tilde chi^0_1) with the tilde chi^0_2 assumed to decay via a Z^0.

Vibrational properties of a sodium tetrasilicate glass: Ab initio versus Classical Force Fields

We have determined the vibrational properties of a sodium tetrasilicate (Na$_{2}$Si$_{4}$O$_{9}$) glass model generated by molecular dynamics simulations. The study has been carried out using a classical valence force fields approach as well as an {\it ab initio} approach in the framework of the density functional theory. The total and partial vibrational densities of states (VDOS) are presented, as well as some characteristics of the vibrational modes (participation ratios, correlation lengths). For the low-frequency bands below 500 cm${}^{-1}$, we find that the shapes of the two calculated VDOS as well as those of their corresponding partial VDOS are quite similar. For the intermediate- and high-frequency ranges, we observe larger discrepancies between the two calculations. Using the eigenmodes of the dynamical matrix we also calculate the polarized Raman spectra within the bond-polarizability approximation. We find an overall agreement between the calculated parallel polarized (VV) Raman spectra and the corresponding experimental spectrum. Regarding the perpendicular depolarized (VH) Raman spectrum, the comparison of the calculated spectra to the experimental data indicates a need for an adjustment of the VH bond-polarizability parameters.

Small x Phenomenology: Summary and Status

The aim of this paper is to summarize the general status of our understanding of small x physics. It is based on presentations and discussions at an informal meeting on this topic held in Lund, Sweden, in March 2001. This document also marks the founding of an informal collaboration between experimentalists and theoreticians with a special interest in small x physics. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Bo Andersson, who died unexpectedly from a heart attack on March 4th, 2002.
