The r-mode instability windows of strange stars

With the constraint from gravitational wave emission of a binary merger system (GW170817) and two-solar-mass pulsar observations, we investigate the r-mode instability windows of strange stars with unpaired and color-flavor-locked phase strange quark matter. Shear viscosities due to surface rubbing and electron-electron scattering are taken into account in this work. The results show that the effects of the equation of state of unpaired strange quark matter are only dominant at low temperature, but do not have significant effects on strange stars in the color-flavor-locked phase. A color-flavor-locked phase strange star, which is surrounded by an insulating nuclear crust, seems to be consistent with observational data of young pulsars. We find that an additional enhanced dissipation mechanisms might exist in SAX J1808.4-3658. Fast spinning young pulsar PSR J0537-6910 is a primary source for detecting gravitational waves from a rotating strange star, and young pulsars might be strange stars with color-flavor-locked phase strange quark matter.

Micro- and Macro-Level Churn Analysis of Large-Scale Mobile Games

As mobile devices become more and more popular, mobile gaming has emerged as a promising market with billion-dollar revenues. A variety of mobile game platforms and services have been developed around the world. A critical challenge for these platforms and services is to understand the churn behavior in mobile games, which usually involves churn at micro level (between an app and a specific user) and macro level (between an app and all its users). Accurate micro-level churn prediction and macro-level churn ranking will benefit many stakeholders such as game developers, advertisers, and platform operators. In this paper, we present the first large-scale churn analysis for mobile games that supports both micro-level churn prediction and macro-level churn ranking. For micro-level churn prediction, in view of the common limitations of the state-of-the-art methods built upon traditional machine learning models, we devise a novel semi-supervised and inductive embedding model that jointly learns the prediction function and the embedding function for user-app relationships. We model these two functions by deep neural networks with a unique edge embedding technique that is able to capture both contextual information and relationship dynamics. We also design a novel attributed random walk technique that takes into consideration both topological adjacency and attribute similarities. To address macro-level churn ranking, we propose to construct a relationship graph with estimated micro-level churn probabilities as edge weights and adapt link analysis algorithms on the graph. We devise a simple algorithm SimSum and adapt two more advanced algorithms PageRank and HITS. The performance of our solutions for the two-level churn analysis problems is evaluated on real-world data collected from the Samsung Game Launcher platform.

Combating Uncertainty with Novel Losses for Automatic Left Atrium Segmentation

Segmenting left atrium in MR volume holds great potentials in promoting the treatment of atrial fibrillation. However, the varying anatomies, artifacts and low contrasts among tissues hinder the advance of both manual and automated solutions. In this paper, we propose a fully-automated framework to segment left atrium in gadolinium-enhanced MR volumes. The region of left atrium is firstly automatically localized by a detection module. Our framework then originates with a customized 3D deep neural network to fully explore the spatial dependency in the region for segmentation. To alleviate the risk of low training efficiency and potential overfitting, we enhance our deep network with the transfer learning and deep supervision strategy. Main contribution of our network design lies in the composite loss function to combat the boundary ambiguity and hard examples. We firstly adopt the Overlap loss to encourage network reduce the overlap between the foreground and background and thus sharpen the predictions on boundary. We then propose a novel Focal Positive loss to guide the learning of voxel-specific threshold and emphasize the foreground to improve classification sensitivity. Further improvement is obtained with an recursive training scheme. With ablation studies, all the introduced modules prove to be effective. The proposed framework achieves an average Dice of 92.24 in segmenting left atrium with pulmonary veins on 20 testing volumes.

Optimal subreflector position determination of shaped dual-reflector antennas based on the parameters iteration approach

A new method based on parameters iteration technique has been developed to determine the optimal subreflector position for shaped Cassegrain antennas to improve the electromagnetic (EM) performance distorted by gravity. Both the features of shaped surface and the relationship between optical path difference (OPD) and far field beam pattern are employed. By describing the shaped dual-reflector surface as a standard discrete parabola set, we can utilize the optical features of the standard Cassegrain system in the classical OPD relationship. Then, the actual far field beam pattern is expressed as the synthesis of ideal beam and error beam by decomposing subreflector adjustment parameters using mechanical-electromagnetic-field-coupling-model (MEFCM). Furthermore, a numerical method for determining optimal subreflector position is presented. The proposed method is based on the iteration technique of subreflector adjustment parameters, and the optimal far field pattern is used as the iteration goal. The numerical solution of optimal adjustment parameters can be obtained rapidly. Results of a 25 m Shaped Cassegrain antenna demonstrate that the adjustment of the subreflector to the optimal position determined by the proposed method can improve the EM performance effectively.

One large glitch in PSR B1737-30 detected with the TMRT

One large glitch was detected in PSR B1737$-$30 using data spanning from MJD 57999 to 58406 obtained with the newly built Shanghai Tian Ma Radio Telescope (TMRT). The glitch took place at the time around MJD 58232.4 when the pulsar underwent an increase in the rotation frequency of $Δν$ about 1.38$\times 10^{-6}$ Hz, corresponding to a fractional step change of $Δν/ ν$ $\thicksim$ 8.39$\times 10^{-7}$. Post$\textrm{-}$glitch $ν$ gradually decreased to the pre$\textrm{-}$glitch value. The frequency derivative was observed to undergo a step change of about $-$9$\times 10^{-16}$ s$^{-2}$. Since July 1987, there are 36 glitches already reported in PSR B1737$-$30 including this one. According to our analysis, the glitch size distribution is well described by the power law with index of 1.13. The distribution of the interval between two adjacent glitches (waiting time $ΔT$) follows a Poissonian probability density function. For PSR B1737$-$30, the interval is prone to be long after a large glitch. But no correlation is found between glitch size and the interval since previous glitch.

$B_{u}$ ${\to}$ $ψM$ decays and $S$-$D$ wave mixing effects

The $B_{u}$ ${\to}$ $ψM$ decays are studied with the perturbative QCD approach, where the psion $ψ$ $=$ $ψ(2S)$, $ψ(3770)$, $ψ(4040)$ and $ψ(4160)$, and the light meson $M$ $=$ $π$, $K$, $ρ$ and $K^{\ast}$. The factorizable and nonfactorizable contributions, and the $S$-$D$ wave mixing effects on the psions are considered in the calculation. With appropriate inputs, the branching ratios for the $B_{u}$ ${\to}$ $ψK$ decays are generally coincident with the experimental data within errors. However, due to the large theoretical and experimental errors, it is impossible for the moment to give a severe constraint on the $S$-$D$ wave mixing angles.

Probing the effects of new physics in $\bar{B}^* \to P \ell \barν_\ell$ decays

The significant divergence between the SM predictions and experimental measurements for the ratios, $R_{D^{(*)}}\equiv \mathcal{B}(\bar{B}\to D^{(*)}τ^- \barν_τ)/ \mathcal{B}(\bar{B}\to D^{(*)} \ell^{\prime-} \barν_{\ell^{\prime}})$ with $(\ell^{\prime}=e\,,μ)$, implies possible hint of new physics in the flavour sector. In this paper, motivated by the "$R_{D^{(*)}}$ puzzle" and abundant $B^*$ data samples at high-luminosity heavy-flavor experiments in the future, we try to probe possible effects of new physics in the semileptonic $\bar{B}^*_{u,d,s} \to P \ell^- \barν_\ell$ $(P=D\,,D_s\,,π\,,K)$ decays induced by $b \to (u,\,c)\ell^- \barν_{\ell}$ transitions in the model-independent vector and scalar scenarios. Using the spaces of NP parameters obtained by fitting to the data of $R_{D}$ and $R_{D^{*}}$, the NP effects on the observables including branching fraction, ratio $R_P^{\ast}$, lepton spin asymmetry and lepton forward-backward asymmetry are studied in detail. We find that the vector type couplings have large effects on the branching fraction and ratio $R_P^{\ast}$. Meanwhile, the scalar type couplings provide significant contributions to all of the observables. The future measurements of these observables in the $\bar{B}^* \to P \ell^- \barν_\ell$ decays at the LHCb and Belle-II could provide a way to crosscheck the various NP solutions to the "$R_{D^{(*)}}$ puzzle".

Study of the $B_{s}$ ${\to}$ $ϕf_{0}(980)$ ${\to}$ $ϕ\,π^{+}π^{-}$ decay with perturbative QCD approach

The rare cascade $B_{s}$ ${\to}$ $ϕf_{0}(980)$ ${\to}$ $ϕ\,π^{+}π^{-}$ decay is studied with the perturbative QCD approach based on the formula for the quasi two-body decay, where the two-pion pair originates from the $S$-wave resonant $f_{0}(980)$ state. It is found that with the introduction of the nonperturbative two-pion distribution amplitudes and the Flatté parameterization of the scalar form factor for the $f_{0}(980)$ resonance, the branching ratio in the mass range 400 MeV $<$ $m(π^{+}π^{-})$ $<$ 1600 MeV is ${\cal B}_{\rm theo}(B_{s}^{0}\, {\to}\,ϕ\,f_{0}(980)\,{\to}\,ϕ\,π^{+}\,π^{-})$ $=$ $[1.31_{-0.31}^{+0.40}(a_{ππ}){}_{-0.16}^{+0.19}(m_{b}) {}_{-0.09}^{+0.10}(\text{CKM})]{\times}10^{-6}$, where the uncertainties come from the parameter $a_{ππ}$ of the two-pion distribution amplitudes, the $b$ quark mass $m_{b}$, the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) factors, respectively. This result agrees with the recent LHCb measurement within uncertainties, ${\cal B}_{\rm exp}(B_{s}^{0}\,{\to}\,ϕ\, f_{0}(980)\,{\to}\,ϕ\,π^{+}\,π^{-})$ $=$ $(1.12{\pm}0.16^{+0.09}_{-0.08}{\pm}0.11){\times}10^{-6}$, where the errors are statistical, systematic and from the normalization, respectively.

Algebraic formulas for the structure constants in symmetric functions

Littlewood-Richardson rule gives the decomposition formula for the multiplication of two Schur functions, while the decomposition formula for the multiplication of two Hall-Littlewood functions or two universal characters is also given by the combinatorial method. In this paper, using the vertex operator realizations of these symmetric functions, we construct the algebraic forms of these decomposition formulas.

Coupled Hall-Littlewood functions, vertex operators and the $q$-boson model

In this paper, we firstly give the definition of the coupled Hall-Littlewood function and its realization in terms of vertex operators. Then we construct the representation of the two-site generalized $q$-boson model in the algebra of coupled Hall-Littlewood functions. Finally, we find that the vertex operators which generate coupled Hall-Littlewood functions can also be used to obtain the partition function of the A-model topological string on the conifold.

Disc-corona interaction in the heartbeat state of GRS 1915+105

Timing analysis provides information about the dynamics of matter accreting on to neutron stars and black holes, and hence is crucial for studying the physics of the accretion flow around these objects. It is difficult, however, to associate the different variability components with each of the spectral components of the accretion flow. We apply several new methods to two Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations of the black hole binary GRS 1915+105 during its heartbeat state to explore the origin of the X-ray variability and the interactions of the accretion-flow components. We offer a promising window into the disc--corona interaction through analysing the formation regions of the disc aperiodic variabilities with different time-scales via comparing the corresponding transition energies of the amplitude-ratio spectra. In a previous paper, we analysed the Fourier power density as a function of energy and frequency to study the origin of the aperiodic variability, and combined that analysis with the phase lag as a function of frequency to derive a picture of the disc--corona interaction in this source. We here, for the first time, investigate the phase lag as a function of energy and frequency, and display some interesting details of the disc--corona interaction. Besides, the results from the shape of amplitude-ratio spectrum and from several other aspects suggest that the quasi-periodic oscillation originates from the corona.

Reinvestigation of the electron fraction and electron Fermi energy of neutron star

In this work, we reinvestigate the electron fraction $Y_{e}$ and electron Fermi energy $E_{F}(e)$ of neutron stars, based on our previous work of Li et al.(2016), in which we firstly deduced a special solution to $E_{F}(e)$, and then obtained several useful analytical formulae for $Y_{\rm e}$ and matter density $ρ$ within classical models and the relativistic mean field(RMF) theory using numerically fitting. The advantages of this work include the following aspects:(1) The linear functions are substituted for the nonlinear exponential functions used in the previous work. This method may be more simple, and closer to realistic equation of state\,(EoS) of a neutron star(NS), because there are linear or quasi-linear relationships between number fractions of leptons and matter density, which can be seen by solving NS EoS; (2)we introduce a dimensionless variable $\varrho$\,($\varrho=ρ/ρ_0$, $ρ_{0}$ is the standard saturated nuclear density), which greatly reduces the scope of the fitting coefficients;(3)we present numerical errors including absolute and relative deviations between the data and fit. By numerically simulating, we have obtained several analytical formulae for $Y_{e}$ and $ρ$ for both APR98 and RMF models. Combining these analytical formulae with the special solution, we can calculate the value of $E_{\rm F}(e)$ for any given matter density. Since $Y_e$ and $E_{ F}(e)$ are important in assessing cooling rate of a NS and the possibility of kaon/pion condensation in the NS interior, this study could be useful in the future study on the thermal evolution of a NS.

Universal Character, Phase Model and Topological Strings on $\mathbb C^3$

In this paper, we consider two different subjects: the algebra of universal characters $S_{[λ,μ]}({\bf x},{\bf y})$ (a generalization of Schur functions) and the phase model of strongly correlated bosons. We find that the two-site generalized phase model can be realized in the algebra of universal characters, and the entries in the monodromy matrix of the phase model can be represented by the vertex operators $Γ_i^\pm(z) (i=1,2)$ which generate universal characters. Meanwhile, we find that these vertex operators can also be used to obtain the A-model topological string partition function on $\mathbb C^3$.

The Dipole Magnetic Field and Spin-down Evolutions of The High Braking Index Pulsar PSR J1640-4631

In this work, we interpreted the high braking index of PSR J1640$-$4631 with a combination of the magneto-dipole radiation and dipole magnetic field decay models. By introducing a mean rotation energy conversion coefficient $\overlineζ$, the ratio of the total high-energy photon energy to the total rotation energy loss in the whole life of the pulsar, and combining the pulsar's high-energy and timing observations with reliable nuclear equation of state, we estimate the pulsar's initial spin period, $P_{0}\sim (17-44)$ ms, corresponding to the moment of inertia $I\sim (0.8-2.1)\times 10^{45}$ g cm$^{2}$. Assuming that PSR J1640$-$4631 has experienced a long-term exponential decay of the dipole magnetic field, we calculate the true age $t_{\rm age}$, the effective magnetic field decay timescale $τ_{D}$, and the initial surface dipole magnetic field at the pole $B_{p}(0)$ of the pulsar to be $(2900-3100)$ yrs, $1.07(2)\times10^{5}$ yrs, and $(1.84-4.20)\times10^{13}$ G, respectively. The measured braking index of $n=3.15(3)$ for PSR J1640$-$4631 is attributed to its long-term dipole magnetic field decay and a low magnetic field decay rate, $dB_{\rm p}/dt\sim -(1.66-3.85)\times10^{8}$ G yr$^{-1}$. Our model can be applied to both the high braking index ($n>3$) and low braking index ($n<3$) pulsars, tested by the future polarization, timing, and high-energy observations of PSR J1640$-$4631.

Effective chemical potential for non-equilibrium systems and its application to molecular beam epitaxy of Bi2Se3

First-principles studies often rely on the assumption of equilibrium, which can be a poor approximation, e.g., for growth. Here, an effective chemical potential method for non-equilibrium systems is developed. A salient feature of the theory is that it maintains the equilibrium limits as the correct limit. In application to molecular beam epitaxy, rate equations are solved for the concentrations of small clusters, which serve as feedstock for growth. We find that the effective chemical potential is determined by the most probable, rather than by the lowest-energy, cluster. In the case of Bi2Se3, the chemical potential is found to be highly supersaturated, leading to a high nucleus concentration in agreement with experiment.
