Secondary anisotropies of the CMB

The Cosmic Microwave Background fluctuations provide a powerful probe of the dark ages of the universe through the imprint of the secondary anisotropies associated with the reionisation of the universe and the growth of structure. We review the relation between the secondary anisotropies and and the primary anisotropies that are directly generated by quantum fluctuations in the very early universe. The physics of secondary fluctuations is described, with emphasis on the ionisation history and the evolution of structure. We discuss the different signatures arising from the secondary effects in terms of their induced temperature fluctuations, polarisation and statistics. The secondary anisotropies are being actively pursued at present, and we review the future and current observational status.

The evolution of clusters in the CLEF cosmological simulation: X-ray structural and scaling properties

We present results from a study of the X-ray cluster population that forms within the CLEF cosmological hydrodynamics simulation, a large N-body/SPH simulation of the Lambda CDM cosmology with radiative cooling, star formation and feedback. The scaled projected temperature and entropy profiles at z=0 are in good agreement with recent high-quality observations of cool core clusters, suggesting that the simulation grossly follows the processes that structure the intracluster medium (ICM) in these objects. Cool cores are a ubiquitous phenomenon in the simulation at low and high redshift, regardless of a cluster's dynamical state. This is at odds with the observations and so suggests there is still a heating mechanism missing from the simulation. Using a simple, observable measure of the concentration of the ICM, which correlates with the apparent mass deposition rate in the cluster core, we find a large dispersion within regular clusters at low redshift, but this diminishes at higher redshift, where strong "cooling-flow" systems are absent in our simulation. Consequently, our results predict that the normalisation and scatter of the luminosity-temperature relation should decrease with redshift; if such behaviour turns out to be a correct representation of X-ray cluster evolution, it will have significant consequences for the number of clusters found at high redshift in X-ray flux-limited surveys.

Small scale contributions to CMB: A coherent analysis

We reanalyse Cosmic Microwave Background data from experiments probing both large and small scales. We assume that measured anisotropies are due not only to primary fluctuations but also, especially at small scales, to secondary effects (namely the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect) and possible point source contaminations. We first consider primary and secondary anisotropies only. For the first time in such analyses, the cosmological dependence of secondary fluctuations is fully taken into account. We show in that case that a higher value of the normalisation $σ\_8$ is preferred, as found by previous studies, but also higher values of the optical depth $τ$ and power spectrum index $n\_s$ are needed. In the second part of our analysis, we further include possible contaminations from unresolved and unremoved point sources. Under these considerations, we discuss the effects on the cosmological parameters. We further obtain the best combination of relative contributions of the three kinds of sources to the measured microwave power on small scales at each frequency. Our method allows us to simultaneously obtain cosmological parameters and explain the so-called small scale power excess in a consistent way.

Magnetic fields from reionisation

We present a complementary study to a new model for generating magnetic fields of cosmological interest. The driving mechanism is the photoionisation process by photons provided by the first luminous sources. Investigating the transient regime at the onset of inhomogeneous reionisation, we show that magnetic field amplitudes as high as $2 \times 10^{-16}$ Gauss can be obtained within a source lifetime. Photons with energies above the ionisation threshold accelerate electrons, inducing magnetic fields outside the Stroemgren spheres which surround the ionising sources. Thanks to their mean free path, photons with higher energies propagate further and lead to magnetic field generation deeper in the neutral medium. We find that soft X-ray photons could contribute to a significant premagnetisation of the intergalactic medium at a redshift of z=15.

Trouble for cluster parameter estimation from blind SZ surveys?

(Abriged version) The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect of galaxy clusters is a tool to measure three quantities: Compton parameter, electron temperature, and cluster peculiar velocity. However, a major problem is non-removed contamination by astrophysical sources that emit in the SZ frequencies. This includes interstellar dust emission, infra-red (IR) galaxies, and radio sources in addition to primary Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. The three former contaminations induce systematic shifts in the three SZ parameters. In this study, we carefully estimated, both for a large beam experiment (namely Planck Surveyor) and a small beam experiment (ACT-like), the systematic errors that result if a fraction of the expected levels of emission from dust, IR galaxies, and radio sources remains non-removed. ...

CMB Quadrupole induced polarisation from clusters and filaments

We present the estimates of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarisation power spectrum from galaxy clusters and filaments using hydrodynamical simulations of large scale structure formation. We focus in the present study on the CMB Quadrupole induced polarisation, which is the dominate secondary polarisation effect, and give the E and B mode power spectra between $l \sim 560$ to 20000.

Primordial quadrupole-induced polarisation from filamentary structures and galaxy clusters

We present the first computation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarisation power spectrum from galaxy clusters and filaments using hydrodynamical simulations of large scale structure. We give the $E$ and $B$ mode power spectra of the CMB quadrupole induced polarisation between $\ell \sim 560$ and 20000. We find that the contribution from warm ionised gas in filamentary structures dominates the polarised signal from galaxy clusters by more than one order of magnitude on large scales (below $\ell \sim 1000$) and by a factor of about two on small scales ($\ell \gsim 10000$). We study the dependence of the power spectra with $σ_8$. Assuming the power spectra vary like $σ_8^n$ we find $n=3.2-4.0$ for filaments and $n=3.5-4.6$ for clusters.

The distance duality relation from X-ray and SZ observations of clusters

X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich data of clusters of galaxies enable to construct a test of the distance duality relation between the angular and luminosity distances. We argue that such a test on large cluster samples may be of importance while trying to distinguish between various models of dark energy. The analysis of a data set of 18 clusters shows no significant violation of this relation. The origin and amplitude of systematic effects and the possibility to increase the precision of this method are discussed.

Extraction of cluster parameters with future Sunyaev-Zel'dovich observations

The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect of galaxy clusters is characterized by three parameters: Compton parameter, electron temperature and cluster peculiar velocity. In the present study we consider the problem of extracting these parameters using multi-frequency SZ observations only. We show that there exists a parameter degeneracy which can be broken with an appropriate choice of frequencies. As a result we discuss the optimal choice of observing frequencies from a theoretical point of view. Finally, we analyze the systematic errors (of the order micro K) on the SZ measurement introduced by finite bandwidths, and suggest a possible method of reducing these errors.

Cosmological Magnetogenesis driven by Radiation Pressure

The origin of large scale cosmological magnetic fields remains a mystery, despite the continuous efforts devoted to that problem. We present a new model of magnetic field generation, based on local charge separation provided by an anisotropic and inhomogeneous radiation pressure. In the cosmological context, the processes we explore take place at the epoch of the reionisation of the Universe. Under simple assumptions, we obtain results (i) in terms of the order of magnitude of the field generated at large scales and (ii) in terms of its power spectrum. The amplitudes obtained (B ~ 8.10^(-6) micro-Gauss) are considerably higher than those obtained in usual magnetogenesis models and provide suitable seeds for amplification by adiabatic collapse and/or dynamo during structure formation.

A Mosaic of the Coma Cluster of Galaxies with XMM-Newton

The Coma cluster of galaxies was observed with XMM-Newton in 12 partially overlapping pointings. We present here the resulting X-ray map in different energy bands and discuss the large scale structure of this cluster. Many point sources were found throughout the observed area, at least 11 of them are coincident with bright galaxies. We also give a hardness ratio map at the so far highest angular resolution obtained for a cluster of galaxies. In this map we found soft regions at the position of bright galaxies, little variation in the central 15 arcmin, but some harder regions north of the line NGC 4874 - NGC 4889.
