Polarization Independent Atomic Prism filter for removing Amplified Spontaneous Emission

We create an optical frequency, polarization independent, narrow band-pass filter of 1.3 GHz (3 dB bandwidth), using the steep dispersion near the Rubidium D1 atomic transitions within a prism-shaped vapor cell. This enables us to clean the amplified spontaneous emission from a laser by more than 3 orders of magnitude. Such a filter could find uses in fields such as quantum information processing and Raman spectroscopy.

Dirac particle dynamics of a superconducting circuit

The core concept of quantum simulation is the mapping of an inaccessible quantum system onto a controllable one by identifying analogous dynamics. We map the Dirac equation of relativistic quantum mechanics in 3+1 dimensions onto a multi-level superconducting Josephson circuit. Resonant drives determine the particle mass and momentum and the quantum state represents the internal spinor dynamics, which are cast in the language of multi-level quantum optics. The degeneracy of the Dirac spectrum corresponds to a degeneracy of bright/dark states within the system and particle spin and helicity are employed to interpret the multi-level dynamics. We simulate the Schwinger mechanism of electron-positron pair production by introducing an analogous electric field as a doubly degenerate Landau-Zener problem. All proposed measurements can be performed well within typical decoherence times. This work opens a new avenue for experimental study of the Dirac equation and provides a tool for control of complex dynamics in multi-level systems.

Revealing the nonlinear response of a tunneling two-level system ensemble using coupled modes

Atomic sized two-level systems (TLSs) in amorphous dielectrics are known as a major source of loss in superconducting devices. In addition, individual TLS are known to induce large frequency shifts due to strong coupling to the devices. However, in the presence of a broad ensemble of TLSs these shifts are symmetrically canceled out and not observed in a typical single-tone spectroscopy experiment. We introduce a two-tone spectroscopy on the normal modes of a pair of coupled superconducting coplanar waveguide resonators to reveal this effect. Together with an appropriate saturation model this enables us to extract the average single-photon Rabi frequency of dominant TLSs to be $Ω_0/2π\approx 79 $ kHz. At high photon numbers we observe an enhanced frequency shift due to nonlinear kinetic inductance when using the two-tone method and estimate the value of the nonlinear coefficient as $K/2π\approx -1\times 10^{-4}$ Hz/photon. Furthermore, the life-time of each resonance can be controlled (increased) by pumping of the other mode as demonstrated both experimentally and theoretically.

Decoherence and Interferometric Sensitivity of BosonSampling in Superconducting Networks

Multiple bosons undergoing coherent evolution in a coupled network of sites constitute a so-called quantum walk system. The simplest example of such a two-particle interference is the celebrated Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. When scaling to larger boson numbers, simulating the exact distribution of bosons has been shown, under reasonable assumptions, to be exponentially hard. We analyze the feasibility and expected performance of a globally connected superconducting resonator based quantum walk system, using the known characteristics of state-of-the-art components. We simulate the sensitivity of such a system to decay processes and to perturbations and compare with coherent input states.

Quantum Error-Correction-Enhanced Magnetometer Overcoming the Limit Imposed by Relaxation

When incorporated in quantum sensing protocols, quantum error correction can be used to correct for high frequency noise, as the correction procedure does not depend on the actual shape of the noise spectrum. As such, it provides a powerful way to complement usual refocusing techniques. Relaxation imposes a fundamental limit on the sensitivity of state of the art quantum sensors which cannot be overcome by dynamical decoupling. The only way to overcome this is to utilize quantum error correcting codes. We present a superconducting magnetometry design that incorporates approximate quantum error correction, in which the signal is generated by a two qubit Hamiltonian term. This two-qubit term is provided by the dynamics of a tunable coupler between two transmon qubits. For fast enough correction, it is possible to lengthen the coherence time of the device beyond the relaxation limit.

Exploiting Non-Markovianity of the Environment for Quantum Control

When the environment of an open quantum system is non-Markovian, amplitude and phase flow not only from the system into the environment but also back. Here we show that this feature can be exploited to carry out quantum control tasks that could not be realized if the system was isolated. Inspired by recent experiments on superconducting phase circuits, we consider an anharmonic ladder with resonant amplitude control only. This restricts realizable operations to SO(N). The ladder is immersed in an environment of two-level systems. Strongly coupled two-level systems lead to non-Markovian effects, whereas the weakly coupled ones result in single-exponential decay. Presence of the environment allows for implementing diagonal unitaries that, together with SO(N), yield the full group SU(N). Using optimal control theory, we obtain errors that are solely $T_1$-limited.

Power broadening effects on Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in $^{20}$Ne vapor

We report here the first observation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in $^{20}$Ne. The power broadening of the EIT linewidth is measured as a function of neon pressure and RF excitation power. Doppler effects on the EIT broadening are found even at low pressures and low intensities, where the linewidth should be governed only by homogeneous effects.

Transient coherence of an EIT media under strong phase modulation

A strong phase modulated coupling field leads to an amplitude modulation of a probe field in an electromagnetically induced transparency process. Time vs. detuning plots for different modulation frequencies reveals a transition between an adiabatic regime where a series of smooth pulses are created with a global phase dependent upon the detuning, and a non-adiabatic regime where a strong transient oscillating response is added to these pulses. In the extreme non-adiabatic regime, where the modulation frequency is higher than the transient decay time, a coherent interference pattern is revealed. Adding a magnetic field lifts the hyperfine level degeneracy, resulting in a separation of the original pulse to three pulses. Every pulse has now a different phase dependent upon the magnetic field causing an interference effect between the different magnetic level transients. We explore the dynamics of the magnetic and non magnetic cases and show its resemblance to the Landau-Zener theory. We also show that combining the global phase of the pulses with the transient interference allows for a wide magnetic sensing range without loosing the sensitivity of a single EIT line.

Heralded generation of Bell states using atomic ensembles

We propose a scheme that utilizes the collective enhancement of a photonic mode inside an atomic ensemble together with a proper Zeeman manifold in order to achieve a heralded polarization entangled Bell state. The entanglement is between two photons that are separated in time and can be used as a post selected deterministic source for applications such as quantum repeaters where a subsequent entanglement swapping measurement is employed. We present a detailed analysis of the practical limitation of the scheme.

Nonlinear Elimination of Spin-Exchange Relaxation of High Magnetic Moments

Relaxation of the Larmor magnetic moment by spin-exchange collisions has been shown to diminish for high alkali densities, resulting from the linear part of the collisional interaction. In contrast, we demonstrate both experimentally and theoretically the elimination of spin-exchange relaxation of high magnetic moments (birefringence) in alkali vapor. This elimination originates from the nonlinear part of the spin-exchange interaction, as a scattering process of the Larmor magnetic moment. We find counter-intuitively that the threshold magnetic field is the same as in the Larmor case, despite the fact that the precession frequency is twice as large.

Rapidly reconfigurable optically induced photonic crystals in hot rubidium vapor

Through periodic index modulation, we create two different types of photonic structures in a heated rubidium vapor for controlled reflection, transmission and diffraction of light. The modulation is achieved through the use of the AC Stark effect resulting from a standing-wave control field. The periodic intensity structures create translationally invariant index profiles analogous to photonic crystals in spectral regions of steep dispersion. Experimental results are consistent with modeling.

Shaping Laguerre-Gaussian laser modes with binary gratings using a Digital Micromirror Device

Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beams are used in many research fields, such as microscopy, laser cavity modes and optical tweezing. We develop a holographic method of generating pure LG modes (amplitude and phase) with a binary amplitude-only Digital Micromirror Device (DMD), as an alternative to the commonly used phase-only Spatial Light Modulator. The advantages of such a DMD include very high frame rates, low cost and high damage thresholds. We show that the propagating shaped beams are self-similar and their phase fronts are of helical shape as demanded. We estimate the purity of the resultant beams to be above 94%.

Direct Wigner tomography of a superconducting anharmonic oscillator

The analysis of wave-packet dynamics may be greatly simplified when viewed in phase-space. While harmonic oscillators are often used as a convenient platform to study wave-packets, arbitrary state preparation in these systems is more challenging. Here, we demonstrate a direct measurement of the Wigner distribution of complex photon states in an anharmonic oscillator - a superconducting phase circuit, biased in the small anharmonicity regime. We test our method on both non-classical states composed of two energy eigenstates and on the dynamics of a phase-locked wavepacket. This method requires a simple calibration, and is easily applicable in our system out to the fifth level.

Quantum and Classical Chirps in an Anharmonic Oscillator

We measure the state dynamics of a tunable anharmonic quantum system, the Josephson phase circuit, under the excitation of a frequency-chirped drive. At small anharmonicity, the state evolves like a wavepacket - a characteristic response in classical oscillators; in this regime we report exponentially enhanced lifetimes of highly excited states, held by the drive. At large anharmonicity, we observe sharp steps, corresponding to the excitation of discrete energy levels. The continuous transition between the two regimes is mapped by measuring the threshold of these two effects.

Strong Coupling Optimization With Planar Spiral Resonators

Planar spirals offer a highly scalable geometry appropriate for wireless power transfer via strongly coupled inductive resonators. We numerically derive a set of geometric scale and material independent coupling terms, and analyze a simple model to identify design considerations for a variety of different materials. We use our model to fabricate integrated planar resonators of handheld sizes, and optimize them to achieve high Q factors, comparable to much larger systems, and strong coupling over significant distances with approximately constant efficiency.

Sub-micrometer epitaxial Josephson junctions for quantum circuits

We present a fabrication scheme and testing results for epitaxial sub-micrometer Josephson junctions. The junctions are made using a high-temperature (1170 K) "via process" yielding junctions as small as 0.8 mu m in diameter by use of optical lithography. Sapphire (Al2O3) tunnel-barriers are grown on an epitaxial Re/Ti multilayer base-electrode. We have fabricated devices with both Re and Al top electrodes. While room-temperature (295 K) resistance versus area data are favorable for both types of top electrodes, the low-temperature (50 mK) data show that junctions with the Al top electrode have a much higher subgap resistance. The microwave loss properties of the junctions have been measured by use of superconducting Josephson junction qubits. The results show that high subgap resistance correlates to improved qubit performance.

Increased superconducting transition temperature of a niobium thin-film proximity-coupled to gold nanoparticles using linking organic molecules

The superconducting critical temperature, TC, of thin Nb films is significantly modified when gold nanoparticles (NPs) are chemically linked to the Nb film, with a consistent enhancement when using 3 nm long disilane linker molecules. The TC increases by up to 10% for certain linker length and NPs size. No change is observed when the nanoparticles are physisorbed with non-linking molecules. Electron tunneling spectra acquired on the linked NPs below TC typically exhibit zero-bias peaks. We attribute these results to a pairing mechanism coupling electrons in the Nb and the NPs, mediated by the organic linkers.

Lifetime and Coherence of Two-Level Defects in a Josephson Junction

We measure the lifetime ($T_{1}$) and coherence ($T_{2}$) of two-level defect states (TLSs) in the insulating barrier of a Josephson phase qubit and compare to the interaction strength between the two systems. We find for the average decay times a power law dependence on the corresponding interaction strengths, whereas for the average coherence times we find an optimum at intermediate coupling strengths. We explain both the lifetime and the coherence results using the standard TLS model, including dipole radiation by phonons and anti-correlated dependence of the energy parameters on environmental fluctuations.
