On pseudospectral bound for non-selfadjoint operators and its application to stability of Kolmogorov flows

We study the stability of the Kolmogorov flows which are stationary solutions to the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in the presence of the shear external force. We establish the linear stability estimate when the viscosity coefficient $ν$ is sufficiently small, where the enhanced dissipation is rigorously verified in the time scale $O(ν^{-\frac12})$ for solutions to the linearized problem, which has been numerically conjectured and is much shorter than the usual viscous time scale $O(ν^{-1})$. Our approach is based on the detailed analysis for the resolvent problem. We also provide the abstract framework which is applicable to the resolvent estimate for the Kolmogorov flows.

Enhanced dissipation for the 2D Couette flow in critical space

We consider the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{T}\times \mathbf{R}$, with initial vorticity that is $δ$ close in $H^{log}_xL^2_{y}$ to $-1$(the vorticity of the Couette flow $(y,0)$). We prove that if $δ\ll ν^{1/2}$, where $ν$ denotes the viscosity, then the solution of the Navier-Stokes equation approaches some shear flow which is also close to Couette flow for time $t\gg ν^{-1/3}$ by a mixing-enhanced dissipation effect and then converges back to Couette flow when $t\to +\infty$. In particular, we show the nonlinear enhanced dissipation and the inviscid damping results in the almost critical space $H^{log}_xL^2_{y}\subset L^2_{x,y}$.

Stability threshold of the 2D Couette flow in Sobolev spaces

We study the stability threshold of the 2D Couette flow in Sobolev spaces at high Reynolds number $Re$. We prove that if the initial vorticity $Ω_{in}$ satisfies $\|Ω_{in}-(-1)\|_{H^σ}\leq εRe^{-1/3}$, then the solution of the 2D Navier-Stokes equation approaches to some shear flow which is also close to Couette flow for time $t\gg Re^{1/3}$ by a mixing-enhanced dissipation effect and then converges back to Couette flow when $t\to +\infty$.

Vanishing Viscosity Limit for Incompressible Viscoelasticity in Two Dimensions

This paper studies the inviscid limit of the two-dimensional incompressible viscoelasticity, which is a system coupling a Navier-Stokes equation with a transport equation for the deformation tensor. The existence of global smooth solutions near the equilibrium with a fixed positive viscosity was known since the work of F. H. Lin, C. Liu, and P. Zhang in "On hydrodynamics of viscoelastic fluids". The inviscid case was solved recently by the second author Z. Lei. in "Global well-posedness of incompressible elastodynamics in two dimensions". While the latter was solely based on the techniques from the studies of hyperbolic equations, and hence the 2D problem is in general more challenge than that in higher dimensions, the former was relied crucially upon a dissipative mechanism. Indeed, after a symmetrization and a linearization around the equilibrium, the system of the incompressible viscoelasticity reduces to an incompressible system of damped wave equations for both the fluid velocity and the deformation tensor. These two approaches are not compatible. In this paper, we prove global existence of solutions, uniformly in both time $t \in [0, \infty)$ and viscosity $μ\geq 0$. This allows us to justify in particular the vanishing viscosity limit for all time. In order to overcome difficulties coming from the incompatibility between the purely hyperbolic limiting system and the systems with additional parabolic viscous perturbations, we introduce in this paper a rather robust method which may apply to a wide class of physical systems of similar nature. Roughly speaking, the method works in two dimensional case whenever the hyperbolic system satisfies intrinsically a "Strong Null Condition". For dimensions not less than three, the usual null condition is sufficient for this method to work.

Ground State Solutions of the Complex Gross Pitaevskii Equation Associated to Exciton-Polariton Bose-Einstein Condensates

We investigate the existence of ground state solutions of a Gross-Pitaevskii equation modeling the dynamics of pumped Bose Einstein condensates (BEC). The main interest in such BEC comes from its important nature as macroscopic quantum system, constituting an excellent alternative to the classical condensates which are hard to realize because of the very low temperature required. Nevertheless, the Gross Pitaevskii equation governing the new condensates presents some mathematical challenges due to the presence of the pumping and damping terms. Following a self-contained approach, we prove the existence of ground state solutions of this equation under suitable assumptions: This is equivalent to say that condensation occurs in these situations. We also solve the Cauchy problem of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation and prove some corresponding laws.

Sharp threshold nonlinearity for maximizing the Trudinger-Moser inequalities

We study existence of maximizer for the Trudinger-Moser inequality with general nonlinearity of the critical growth on $R^2$, as well as on the disk. We derive a very sharp threshold nonlinearity between the existence and the non-existence in each case, in asymptotic expansions with respect to growth and decay of the function. The expansions are explicit, using Apéry's constant. We also obtain an asymptotic expansion for the exponential radial Sobolev inequality on $R^2$.

Stability of receding traveling waves for a fourth order degenerate parabolic free boundary problem

Consider the thin-film equation $h_t + \left(h h_{yyy}\right)_y = 0$ with a zero contact angle at the free boundary, that is, at the triple junction where liquid, gas, and solid meet. Previous results on stability and well-posedness of this equation have focused on perturbations of equilibrium-stationary or self-similar profiles, the latter eventually wetting the whole surface. These solutions have their counterparts for the second-order porous-medium equation $h_t - (h^m)_{yy} = 0$, where $m > 1$ is a free parameter. Both porous-medium and thin-film equation degenerate as $h \searrow 0$, but the porous-medium equation additionally fulfills a comparison principle while the thin-film equation does not. In this note, we consider traveling waves $h = \frac V 6 x^3 + νx^2$ for $x \ge 0$, where $x = y-V t$ and $V, ν\ge 0$ are free parameters. These traveling waves are receding and therefore describe de-wetting, a phenomenon genuinely linked to the fourth-order nature of the thin-film equation and not encountered in the porous-medium case as it violates the comparison principle. The linear stability analysis leads to a linear fourth-order degenerate-parabolic operator for which we prove maximal-regularity estimates to arbitrary orders of the expansion in $x$ in a right-neighborhood of the contact line $x = 0$. This leads to a well-posedness and stability result for the corresponding nonlinear equation. As the linearized evolution has different scaling as $x \searrow 0$ and $x \to \infty$, the analysis is more intricate than in related previous works. We anticipate that our approach is a natural step towards investigating other situations in which the comparison principle is violated, such as droplet rupture.

Well-posedness of the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations

We address the local well-posedness of the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations. These equations, sometimes called reduced Navier-Stokes/Prandtl, appear as a formal limit of the Navier-Stokes system in thin domains, under certain constraints on the aspect ratio and the Reynolds number. It is known that without any structural assumption on the initial data, real-analyticity is both necessary and sufficient for the local well-posedness of the system. In this paper we prove that for convex initial data, local well-posedness holds under simple Gevrey regularity.

Long time instability of the Couette flow in low Gevrey spaces

We prove the instability of the Couette flow if the disturbances is less smooth than the Gevrey space of class 2. This shows that this is the critical regularity for this problem since it was proved in [5] that stability and inviscid damping hold for disturbances which are smoother than the Gevrey space of class 2. A big novelty is that this critical space is due to an instability mechanism which is completely nonlinear and is due to some energy cascade.

Separation for the stationary Prandtl equation

In this paper, we prove that separation occurs for the stationary Prandtl equation, in the case of adverse pressure gradient, for a large class of boundary data at $x=0$.We justify the Goldstein singularity: more precisely, we prove that under suitable assumptions on the boundary data at $x=0$, there exists $x^*>0$ such that $\p\_y u\_{y=0}(x)\sim C \sqrt{x^* -x}$ as $x\to x^*$ for some positive constant $C$, where $u$ is the solution of the stationary Prandtl equation in the domain $\{0 0\}$. Our proof relies on three main ingredients: the computation of a "stable" approximate solution, using modulation theory arguments, a new formulation of the Prandtl equation, for which we derive energy estimates, relying heavily on the structure of the equation, and maximum principle techniques to handle nonlinear terms.

Global bifurcation of rotating vortex patches

We rigorously construct continuous curves of rotating vortex patch solutions to the two-dimensional Euler equations. The curves are large in that, as the parameter tends to infinity, the minimum along the interface of the angular fluid velocity in the rotating frame becomes arbitrarily small. This is consistent with the conjectured existence [WOZ84,Ove86] of singular limiting patches with 90$^\circ$ corners at which the relative fluid velocity vanishes. For solutions close to the disk, we prove that there are "Cat's eyes"-type structures in the flow, and provide numerical evidence that these structures persist along the entire solution curves and are related to the formation of corners. We also show, for any rotating vortex patch, that the boundary is analytic as soon as it is sufficiently regular.

Global Well-posedness for 2D Nonlinear Wave Equations without Compact Support

In the significant work of [2], Alinhac proved the global existence of small solutions for 2D quasilinear wave equations under the null conditions. The proof heavily relies on the fact that the initial data have compact support [22]. Whether this constraint can be removed or not is still unclear. In this paper, for fully nonlinear wave equations under the null conditions, we prove the global well-posedness for small initial data without compact support. Moreover, we apply our result to a class of quasilinear wave equations.

Ill-posedness results in critical spaces for some equations arising in hydrodynamics

Many questions related to well-posedness/ill-posedness in critical spaces for hydrodynamic equations have been open for many years. In this article we give a new approach to studying norm inflation (in some critical spaces) for a wide class of equations arising in hydrodynamics. As an application, we prove strong ill-posedness of the $n$-dimensional Euler equations in the class $C^1\cap L^2 (Ω)$ and also in $C^k \cap L^2(Ω)$ where $Ω$ can be the whole space, a smooth bounded domain, or the torus. We also apply our method to the Oldroyd B, surface quasi-geostrophic, and Boussinesq systems.

Stability of infinite time blow up for the Patlak Keller Segel system

We consider the parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel (PKS) model of chemotactic aggregation in two space dimensions which describes the aggregation of bacteria under chemo-taxis. When the mass is equal to $8π$ and the second moment is finite (the doubly critical case), we give a precise description of the dynamic as time goes to infinity and extract the limiting profile and speed. The proof shows that this dynamic is stable under perturbations.

Gevrey Stability of Prandtl Expansions for 2D Navier-Stokes

We investigate the stability of boundary layer solutions of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We consider shear flow solutions of Prandtl type : $$ u^ν(t,x,y) \, = \, \big (U^E(t,y) + U^{BL}(t,\frac{y}{\sqrtν})\,, \, 0 \big )\, , \quad 0<ν\ll 1\,. $$ We show that if $U^{BL}$ is monotonic and concave in $Y = y /\sqrtν$ then $u^ν$ is stable over some time interval $(0,T)$, $T$ independent of $ν$, under perturbations with Gevrey regularity in $x$ and Sobolev regularity in $y$. We improve in this way the classical stability results of Sammartino and Caflisch in analytic class (both in $x$ and $y$). Moreover, in the case where $U^{BL}$ is steady and strictly concave, our Gevrey exponent for stability is optimal. The proof relies on new and sharp resolvent estimates for the linearized Orr-Sommerfeld operator.

Landau damping in finite regularity for unconfined systems with screened interactions

We prove Landau damping for the collisionless Vlasov equation with a class of $L^1$ interaction potentials (including the physical case of screened Coulomb interactions) on $\mathbb R^3_x \times \mathbb R^3_v$ for localized disturbances of an infinite, homogeneous background. Unlike the confined case $\mathbb T^3_x \times \mathbb R_v^3$, results are obtained for initial data in Sobolev spaces (as well as Gevrey and analytic classes). For spatial frequencies bounded away from zero, the Landau damping of the density is similar to the confined case. The finite regularity is possible due to an additional dispersive mechanism available on $\mathbb R_x^3$ which reduces the strength of the plasma echo resonance.
