Task Generalization with Stability Guarantees via Elastic Dynamical System Motion Policies

Dynamical System (DS) based Learning from Demonstration (LfD) allows learning of reactive motion policies with stability and convergence guarantees from a few trajectories. Yet, current DS learning techniques lack the flexibility to generalize to new task instances as they ignore explicit task parameters that inherently change the underlying trajectories. In this work, we propose Elastic-DS, a novel DS learning, and generalization approach that embeds task parameters into the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) based Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) DS formulation. Central to our approach is the Elastic-GMM, a GMM constrained to SE(3) task-relevant frames. Given a new task instance/context, the Elastic-GMM is transformed with Laplacian Editing and used to re-estimate the LPV-DS policy. Elastic-DS is compositional in nature and can be used to construct flexible multi-step tasks. We showcase its strength on a myriad of simulated and real-robot experiments while preserving desirable control-theoretic guarantees. A Combined Approach Toward Consistent Reconstructions of Indoor Spaces Based on 6D RGB-D Odometry and KinectFusion

We propose a 6D RGB-D odometry approach that finds the relative camera pose between consecutive RGB-D frames by keypoint extraction and feature matching both on the RGB and depth image planes. Furthermore, we feed the estimated pose to the highly accurate KinectFusion algorithm, which uses a fast ICP (Iterative Closest Point) to fine-tune the frame-to-frame relative pose and fuse the depth data into a global implicit surface. We evaluate our method on a publicly available RGB-D SLAM benchmark dataset by Sturm et al. The experimental results show that our proposed reconstruction method solely based on visual odometry and KinectFusion outperforms the state-of-the-art RGB-D SLAM system accuracy. Moreover, our algorithm outputs a ready-to-use polygon mesh (highly suitable for creating 3D virtual worlds) without any postprocessing steps.

Temporal Logic Imitation: Learning Plan-Satisficing Motion Policies from Demonstrations

Learning from demonstration (LfD) has succeeded in tasks featuring a long time horizon. However, when the problem complexity also includes human-in-the-loop perturbations, state-of-the-art approaches do not guarantee the successful reproduction of a task. In this work, we identify the roots of this challenge as the failure of a learned continuous policy to satisfy the discrete plan implicit in the demonstration. By utilizing modes (rather than subgoals) as the discrete abstraction and motion policies with both mode invariance and goal reachability properties, we prove our learned continuous policy can simulate any discrete plan specified by a linear temporal logic (LTL) formula. Consequently, an imitator is robust to both task- and motion-level perturbations and guaranteed to achieve task success. Project page: https://yanweiw.github.io/tli/

Ultra-fast, programmable, and electronics-free soft robots enabled by snapping metacaps

Soft robots have a myriad of potentials because of their intrinsically compliant bodies, enabling safe interactions with humans and adaptability to unpredictable environments. However, most of them have limited actuation speeds, require complex control systems, and lack sensing capabilities. To address these challenges, here we geometrically design a class of metacaps whose rich nonlinear mechanical behaviors can be harnessed to create soft robots with unprecedented functionalities. Specifically, we demonstrate a sensor-less metacap gripper that can grasp objects in 3.75 ms upon physical contact and a pneumatically actuated gripper with tunable actuation behaviors that have little dependence on the rate of input. Both grippers can be readily integrated into a robotic platform for practical applications. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the metacap enables propelling of a swimming robot, exhibiting amplified swimming speed as well as untethered, electronics-free swimming with tunable speeds. Our metacaps provide new strategies to design the next-generation soft robots that require high transient output energy and are capable of autonomous and electronics-free maneuvering.

RoCUS: Robot Controller Understanding via Sampling

As robots are deployed in complex situations, engineers and end users must develop a holistic understanding of their behaviors, capabilities, and limitations. Some behaviors are directly optimized by the objective function. They often include success rate, completion time or energy consumption. Other behaviors -- e.g., collision avoidance, trajectory smoothness or motion legibility -- are typically emergent but equally important for safe and trustworthy deployment. Designing an objective which optimizes every aspect of robot behavior is hard. In this paper, we advocate for systematic analysis of a wide array of behaviors for holistic understanding of robot controllers and, to this end, propose a framework, RoCUS, which uses Bayesian posterior sampling to find situations where the robot controller exhibits user-specified behaviors, such as highly jerky motions. We use RoCUS to analyze three controller classes (deep learning models, rapidly exploring random trees and dynamical system formulations) on two domains (2D navigation and a 7 degree-of-freedom arm reaching), and uncover insights to further our understanding of these controllers and ultimately improve their designs.

Transform-Invariant Non-Parametric Clustering of Covariance Matrices and its Application to Unsupervised Joint Segmentation and Action Discovery

In this work, we tackle the problem of transform-invariant unsupervised learning in the space of Covariance matrices and applications thereof. We begin by introducing the Spectral Polytope Covariance Matrix (SPCM) Similarity function; a similarity function for Covariance matrices, invariant to any type of transformation. We then derive the SPCM-CRP mixture model, a transform-invariant non-parametric clustering approach for Covariance matrices that leverages the proposed similarity function, spectral embedding and the distance-dependent Chinese Restaurant Process (dd-CRP) (Blei and Frazier, 2011). The scalability and applicability of these two contributions is extensively validated on real-world Covariance matrix datasets from diverse research fields. Finally, we couple the SPCM-CRP mixture model with the Bayesian non-parametric Indian Buffet Process (IBP) - Hidden Markov Model (HMM) (Fox et al., 2009), to jointly segment and discover transform-invariant action primitives from complex sequential data. Resulting in a topic-modeling inspired hierarchical model for unsupervised time-series data analysis which we call ICSC-HMM (IBP Coupled SPCM-CRP Hidden Markov Model). The ICSC-HMM is validated on kinesthetic demonstrations of uni-manual and bi-manual cooking tasks; achieving unsupervised human-level decomposition of complex sequential tasks.
