Primordial Magnetogenesis from Killing Vector Fields

Papapetrou showed that the covariant derivative of a Killing vector field satisfies Maxwell's equations in vacuum. We extend Papapetrou's result to show that the covariant derivative of a Killing vector field satisfies Maxwell's equations in non-vacuum backgrounds as well, if we allow electromagnetic currents of purely geometric origin. We postulate that every Killing vector field gives rise to a physical electromagnetic field and, in a non-vacuum background, a physical electromagnetic current---hereafter called Killing electromagnetic field and Killing electromagnetic current, respectively. We show that the Killing electromagnetic field of the flat FLRW universe comprises a Killing magnetic field and a rotational Killing electric field; we derive an upper bound on the Killing magnetic field and find that the upper bound is consistent with the current upper bound on the cosmic magnetic field. We show that the time-like Killing vector of the Schwarzschild spacetime gives rise to a radial Killing electric field. We also show that in the weak field regime---and far from the matter distribution---the back reaction of the radial Killing electric field changes the Schwarzschild metric to Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{\mbox{o}}$m metric; our calculation yields the converse of Wald's result. Next, drawing upon Rainich's work on Rainich-Riemann manifolds, we discuss the etiological question of how a physical electromagnetic field can arise out of geometry; we also argue that detection of the Killing electric field of flat FLRW spacetime may be within current experimental reach. Finally, we discuss the relevance of Killing electromagnetic currents and the aforementioned transmutation of Schwarzschild spacetime to Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime, to Misner and Wheeler's program of realizing ``charge without charge''.

Static Solitons in an Expanding Universe

We show, analytically, that a static sine-Gordon soliton cannot exist in 1 + 1 non-dynamical de Sitter spacetime if $α:= (m/H)^2 < 2$, where $m$ is the mass parameter of the sine-Gordon theory and $H$ is the Hubble constant. Conversely, we also show that static sine-Gordon solitons exist in 1 + 1 non-dynamical de Sitter spacetime if $α> 2$. The above threshold is explained---qualitatively and to within an O(1) factor---using a heuristic argument involving the interplay of tensile force in the Lorentzian sine-Gordon soliton and the tidal force in de Sitter spacetime. A similar heuristic argument, which remains to be confirmed analytically, also suggests the existence of a threshold, $ (m_V/H)^2 \sim O(1)$, below which the tidal forces are too strong to permit the existence of a static `t Hooft--Polyakov monopole in non-dynamical 3 + 1 de Sitter spacetime; $m_V$ is the mass of the vector boson. Linde has suggested that new inflation could have triggered secondary inflation at the core of a GUT (Grand Unified Theory) monopole even if the Hubble constant at or after the GUT phase transition was significantly smaller than the mass of the $X$ boson. We present a heuristic argument, which suggests that the $SO(3)$ `t Hooft--Polyakov monopole does not allow secondary inflation at its core when the inflationary background is weak. Based on the above, as yet analytically unconfirmed, heuristic argument for the $SO(3)$ `t Hooft--Polyakov monopole, we conjecture that secondary inflation at the core of a GUT monopole is infeasible.

A new method that automatically regularizes scattering amplitudes

We present a new regularization procedure called autoregularization. The new procedure regularizes the divergences, encountered previously in a scattering process, using the intrinsic scale of the process. We use autoregularization to calculate the amplitudes of several scattering processes in QED and compare the calculations with experimental measurements over a broad range of center-of-momentum energies ( $\lesssim$ MeV to $\gtrsim$ 200 GeV ). The calculated amplitudes are found to be in good agreement with experimental data. To test autoregularization in a non-Abelian gauge theory, we calculate the QCD coupling constant at 1-loop and show that, like the known regularization schemes, autoregularization also predicts asymptotic freedom in QCD. Finally, we show that the vacuum energy density of the free fields in the Standard Model, calculated using autoregularization, is smaller than the current estimate of the cosmic critical density.
