BV functions and fractional Laplacians on Dirichlet spaces

We study $L^p$ Besov critical exponents and isoperimetric and Sobolev inequalities associated with fractional Laplacians on metric measure spaces. The main tool is the theory of heat semigroup based Besov classes in Dirichlet spaces that was introduced by the authors in previous works.

Carathéodory-type extension theorem with respect to prime end boundaries

We prove a Carathéodory-type extension of BQS homeomorphisms between two domains in proper, locally path-connected metric spaces as homeomorphisms between their prime end closures. We also give a Carathéodory-type extension of geometric quasiconformal mappings between two such domains provided the two domains are both Ahlfors $Q$-regular and support a $Q$-Poincaré inequality when equipped with their respective Mazurkiewicz metrics. We also provide examples to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of prime end closures in this context.

Bounded geometry and $p$-harmonic functions under uniformization and hyperbolization

The uniformization and hyperbolization transformations formulated by Bonk, Heinonen and Koskela in \emph{"Uniformizing Gromov Hyperbolic Spaces"}, Astérisque {\bf 270} (2001), dealt with geometric properties of metric spaces. In this paper we consider metric measure spaces and construct a parallel transformation of measures under the uniformization and hyperbolization procedures. We show that if a locally compact roughly starlike Gromov hyperbolic space is equipped with a measure that is uniformly locally doubling and supports a uniformly local $p$-Poincaré inequality, then the transformed measure is globally doubling and supports a global $p$-Poincaré inequality on the corresponding uniformized space. In the opposite direction, we show that such global properties on bounded locally compact uniform spaces yield similar uniformly local properties for the transformed measures on the corresponding hyperbolized spaces. We use the above results on uniformization of measures to characterize when a Gromov hyperbolic space, equipped with a uniformly locally doubling measure supporting a uniformly local $p$-Poincaré inequality, carries nonconstant globally defined $p$-harmonic functions with finite $p$-energy. We also study some geometric properties of Gromov hyperbolic and uniform spaces. While the Cartesian product of two Gromov hyperbolic spaces need not be Gromov hyperbolic, we construct an indirect product of such spaces that does result in a Gromov hyperbolic space. This is done by first showing that the Cartesian product of two bounded uniform domains is a uniform domain.

The Liouville theorem for $p$-harmonic functions and quasiminimizers with finite energy

We show that, under certain geometric conditions, there are no nonconstant quasiminimizers with finite $p$th power energy in a (not necessarily complete) metric measure space equipped with a globally doubling measure supporting a global $p$-Poincaré inequality. The geometric conditions are that either (a) the measure has a sufficiently strong volume growth at infinity, or (b) the metric space is annularly quasiconvex (or its discrete version, annularly chainable) around some point in the space. Moreover, on the weighted real line $\mathbf{R}$, we characterize all locally doubling measures, supporting a local $p$-Poincaré inequality, for which there exist nonconstant quasiminimizers of finite $p$-energy, and show that a quasiminimizer is of finite $p$-energy if and only if it is bounded. As $p$-harmonic functions are quasiminimizers they are covered by these results.

Equivalence of two BV classes of functions in metric spaces, and existence of a Semmes family of curves under a $1$-Poincaré inequality

We consider two notions of functions of bounded variation in complete metric measure spaces, one due to Martio and the other due to Miranda~Jr. We show that these two notions coincide, if the measure is doubling and supports a $1$-Poincaré inequality. In doing so, we also prove that if the measure is doubling and supports a $1$-Poincaré inequality, then the metric space supports a \emph{Semmes family of curves} structure.

The prime end capacity of inaccessible prime ends, resolutivity, and the Kellogg property

Prime end boundaries $\partial_PΩ$ of domains $Ω$ are studied in the setting of complete doubling metric measure spaces supporting a $p$-Poincaré inequality. Notions of rectifiably (in)accessible- and (in)finitely far away prime ends are introduced and employed in classification of prime ends. We show that, for a given domain, the prime end capacity of the collection of all rectifiably inaccessible prime ends together will all non-singleton prime ends is zero. We show the resolutivity of continouous functions on $\partial_PΩ$ which are Lipschitz continuous with respect to the Mazurkiewicz metric when restricted to the collection $\partial_{SP}Ω$ of all accessible prime ends. Furthermore, bounded perturbations of such functions in $\partial_PΩ\setminus\partial_{SP}Ω$ yield the same Perron solution. In the final part of the paper, we demonstrate the (resolutive) Kellogg property with respect to the prime end boundary of bounded domains in the metric space. Notions given in this paper are illustrated by a number of examples.

Locally $p$-admissible measures on $\mathbb{R}$

In this note we show that locally $p$-admissible measures on $\mathbb{R}$ necessarily come from local Muckenhoupt $A_p$ weights. In the proof we employ the corresponding characterization of global $p$-admissible measures on $\mathbb{R}$ in terms of global $A_p$ weights due to Björn, Buckley and Keith, together with tools from analysis in metric spaces, more specifically preservation of the doubling condition and Poincaré inequalities under flattening, due to Durand-Cartagena and Li. As a consequence, the class of locally $p$-admissible weights on $\mathbb{R}$ is invariant under addition and satisfies the lattice property. We also show that measures that are $p$-admissible on an interval can be partially extended by periodical reflections to global $p$-admissible measures. Surprisingly, the $p$-admissibility has to hold on a larger interval than the reflected one, and an example shows that this is necessary.

Modulus of families of sets of finite perimeter and quasiconformal maps between metric spaces of globally $Q$-bounded geometry

We generalize a result of J. C. Kelly to the setting of Ahlfors $Q$-regular metric measure spaces supporting a $1$-Poincaré inequality. It is shown that if $X$ and $Y$ are two Ahlfors $Q$-regular spaces supporting a $1$-Poincaré inequality and $f:X\to Y$ is a quasiconformal mapping, then the $Q/(Q-1)$-modulus of the collection of measures $\mathcal{H}^{Q-1}\lfloor_{ΣE}$ corresponding to any collection of sets $E\subset X$ of finite perimeter is quasi-preserved by $f$. We also show that for $Q/(Q-1)$-modulus almost every $ΣE$, if the image surface $Σf(E)$ does not see the singular set of $f$ as a large set, then $f(E)$ is also of finite perimeter. Even in the standard Euclidean setting our results are more general than that of Kelly, and hence are new even in there.

Infinity modulus and the essential metric

We study $\infty$-modulus on general metric spaces and establish its relation to shortest lengths of paths. This connection was already known for modulus on graphs, but the formulation in metric measure spaces requires more attention to exceptional families. We use this to define a metric that we call the essential metric, and show how this recovers a metric that had already been advanced in the literature by De Cecco and Palmieri.

An Analog of the Neumann Problem for the $1$-Laplace Equation in the Metric Setting: Existence, Boundary Regularity, and Stability

We study an inhomogeneous Neumann boundary value problem for functions of least gradient on bounded domains in metric spaces that are equipped with a doubling measure and support a Poincaré inequality. We show that solutions exist under certain regularity assumptions on the domain, but are generally nonunique. We also show that solutions can be taken to be differences of two characteristic functions, and that they are regular up to the boundary when the boundary is of positive mean curvature. By regular up to the boundary we mean that if the boundary data is $1$ in a neighborhood of a point on the boundary of the domain, then the solution is $-1$ in the intersection of the domain with a possibly smaller neighborhood of that point. Finally, we consider the stability of solutions with respect to boundary data.

Domains in metric measure spaces with boundary of positive mean curvature, and the Dirichlet problem for functions of least gradient

We study the geometry of domains in complete metric measure spaces equipped with a doubling measure supporting a $1$-Poincaré inequality. We propose a notion of \emph{domain with boundary of positive mean curvature} and prove that, for such domains, there is always a solution to the Dirichlet problem for least gradients with continuous boundary data. Here \emph{least gradient} is defined as minimizing total variation (in the sense of BV functions) and boundary conditions are satisfied in the sense that the \emph{boundary trace} of the solution exists and agrees with the given boundary data. This extends the result of Sternberg, Williams and Ziemer to the non-smooth setting. Via counterexamples we also show that uniqueness of solutions and existence of \emph{continuous} solutions can fail, even in the weighted Euclidean setting with Lipschitz weights.

Dichotomy of global capacity density in metric measure spaces

The variational capacity cap_p in Euclidean spaces is known to enjoy the density dichotomy at large scales, namely that for every subset E of R^n, inf_{x in R^n} (cap_p(E \cap B(x,r),B(x,2r)) / cap_p(B(x,r),B(x,2r))) is either zero or tends to 1 as r tends to infinity. We prove that this property still holds in unbounded complete geodesic metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure supporting a p-Poincaré inequality, but that it can fail in nongeodesic metric spaces and also for the Sobolev capacity in R^n. It turns out that the shape of balls impacts the validity of the density dichotomy. Even in more general metric spaces, we construct families of sets, such as John domains, for which the density dichotomy holds. Our arguments include an exact formula for the variational capacity of superlevel sets for capacitary potentials and a quantitative approximation from inside of the variational capacity.

Notions of Dirichlet problem for functions of least gradient in metric measure spaces

We study two notions of Dirichlet problem associated with BV energy minimizers (also called functions of least gradient) in bounded domains in metric measure spaces whose measure is doubling and supports a $(1,1)$-Poincaré inequality. Since one of the two notions is not amenable to the direct method of the calculus of variations, we construct, based on an approach of [23, 29], solutions by considering the Dirichlet problem for $p$-harmonic functions, $p>1$, and letting $p\to 1$. Tools developed and used in this paper include the inner perimeter measure of a domain.

Neumann problem for p-Laplace equation in metric spaces using a variational approach: existence, boundedness, and boundary regularity

We employ a variational approach to study the Neumann boundary value problem for the $p$-Laplacian on bounded smooth-enough domains in the metric setting, and show that solutions exist and are bounded. The boundary data considered are Borel measurable bounded functions. We also study boundary continuity properties of the solutions. One of the key tools utilized is the trace theorem for Newton-Sobolev functions, and another is an analog of the De Giorgi inequality adapted to the Neumann problem.

Trace and extension theorems for functions of bounded variation

In this paper we show that every $L^1$-integrable function on $\partialΩ$ can be obtained as the trace of a function of bounded variation in $Ω$ whenever $Ω$ is a domain with regular boundary $\partialΩ$ in a doubling metric measure space. In particular, the trace class of $BV(Ω)$ is $L^1(\partialΩ)$ provided that $Ω$ supports a 1-Poincaré inequality. We also construct a bounded linear extension from a Besov class of functions on $\partialΩ$ to $BV(Ω)$.

Characterizations of sets of finite perimeter using heat kernels in metric spaces

The overarching goal of this paper is to link the notion of sets of finite perimeter (a concept associated with $N^{1,1}$-spaces) and the theory of heat semigroups (a concept related to $N^{1,2}$-spaces) in the setting of metric measure spaces whose measure is doubling and supports a $1$-Poincaré inequality. We prove a characterization of sets of finite perimeter in terms of a short time behavior of the heat semigroup in such metric spaces. We also give a new characterization of ${\rm BV}$ functions in terms of a near-diagonal energy in this general setting.

Fine properties and a notion of quasicontinuity for BV functions on metric spaces

On a metric space equipped with a doubling measure supporting a Poincaré inequality, we show that given a BV function, discarding a set of small $1$-capacity makes the function continuous outside its jump set and ``one-sidedly" continuous in its jump set. We show that such a property implies, in particular, that the measure theoretic boundary of a set of finite perimeter separates the measure theoretic interior of the set from its measure theoretic exterior, both in the sense of the subspace topology outside sets of small $1$-capacity, and in the sense of $1$-almost every curve.
