Hydrodynamic models of reheating

We develop a causal hydrodynamic model that provides an effective macroscopic description of the field-theoretic dynamics during the early stages of reheating. The inflaton condensate is treated as a homogeneous background coupled to a relativistic fluid that represents its inhomogeneous fluctuations. Within the divergence-type theory framework derived from kinetic considerations, the model captures essential dissipative and non-equilibrium effects while remaining stable and causal. We find that the coupling between the oscillating condensate and the fluid induces a parametric resonance in the tensor sector, leading to the amplification of the viscous stress tensor and the generation of gravitational waves with a characteristic spectral peak. The predicted spectrum agrees with lattice simulations performed with CosmoLattice. This hydrodynamic approach offers an effective bridge between microscopic field dynamics and macroscopic cosmological observables.

Bias in the tensor-to-scalar ratio from self-interacting dark radiation

We investigate the cosmological imprint of self-interacting dark radiation (DR) on the primordial $B$-mode angular power spectrum and its impact on the estimation of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. We consider a minimal model in which DR is described as an effectively massless axion-like particle with quartic self-interactions. These interactions are incorporated into the Einstein-Boltzmann equations using the relaxation time approximation and implemented in the $\texttt{CLASS}$ code. We show that increasing the strength of DR self-interactions suppresses anisotropic stress, thereby reducing the damping of gravitational waves and leading to an enhancement of the primordial $B$-mode signal relative to the free-streaming case. Using mock CMB data and Markov Chain Monte Carlo analyses, we show that neglecting DR self-interactions may bias the inferred value of $r$ by an amount comparable to the uncertainty expected in forthcoming CMB polarization experiments, such as the ground-based $\textit{Simons Observatory}$ and the satellite missions $\textit{LiteBIRD}$ and PICO. Our results emphasize the importance of properly modeling DR interactions in future precision searches for primordial $B$-modes in order to obtain unbiased constraints on inflationary gravitational waves.

O$(D,D)$-covariant formulation of perfect and imperfect fluids in the double geometry

We study generic matter coupled to a $D$-dimensional supergravity using a formulation of Double Field Theory (DFT), where all the fields are encoded in O$(D,D)$ multiplets. We study both the case when the matter comes from a variational principle, as well as the case where the matter comes from a statistical or thermodynamic approach. For the latter, we construct the distribution function for the perfect fluid and its entropy current, which is a conserved quantity. We then include general viscous and elastic terms in the generalized energy-momentum tensor which, in the general case, lead to entropy production. We consistently deform the conservation law of the generalized entropy current and identify a particular non-dissipative deformation. Using the generalized fluid model, we revisit the issue of non-covariance of perfect fluids under T-dualities and we show how to resolve it in our DFT model with matter.

Double Field Theory with matter and the generalized Bergshoeff-de Roo identification

The scalar field-perfect fluid (sf-pf) correspondence shows that the energy-momentum tensor of a scalar field is in correspondence with the dynamics of a perfect fluid. In this work we generalize this concept to study the higher-derivative structure of Double Field Theory with statistical matter. Using the generalized Bergshoeff-de Roo identification we find nontrivial higher-derivative corrections for the generalized scalar field Lagrangian. However, these contributions are removed to any desired order using field redefinitions at the supergravity level. By virtue of the generalized sf-pf correspondence we obtain the higher-derivative dynamics for the perfect fluid in the double geometry, which is also trivialized at the supergravity level. These results imply that the well-known $α'$-corrections obtained by this procedure only correct the effective vacuum Lagrangian, while the sf-pf Lagrangian coupled to the supergravity background remains uncorrected to all orders. Our findings apply for a general (Bosonic-Heterotic-Type II-HSZ) supergravity background.

Double Field Theory with matter and its cosmological application

The phase space formulation of Double Field Theory (DFT) indicates that statistical matter can be included in terms of (T-)duality multiplets. We propose the inclusion of a perfect fluid in the geometry of DFT through a generalized energy-momentum tensor written in terms of a DFT pressure, energy density and velocity. The latter is an $O(D,D)$ vector and satisfies two invariant constraints, in agreement with the on-shell constraints for the generalized momentum. We compute the conservation laws associated to the energy-momentum tensor considering general DFT backgrounds. Then we study cosmological backgrounds using a space-time split, and we find an expression for the DFT cosmological dynamics with the perfect fluid coupled. This proposal reproduces the equations of string cosmology upon parametrization of the DFT Einstein equations.

Primordial Weibel instability

We study the onset of vector instabilities in the post-inflationary epoch of the Universe as a mechanism for primordial magnetic fields amplification. We assume the presence of a charged spectator scalar field arbitrarily coupled to gravity during Inflation in its vacuum de Sitter state. Gravitational particle creation takes place at the transition from Inflation to the subsequent Reheating stage and thus the vacuum field state becomes an excited many particles one. Consequently this state can be described as a real fluid, and we build out the hydrodynamic framework using second order theories for relativistic fluids with a relaxation time prescription for the collision integral. Given the high-temperature regime and the vanishing scalar curvature of the Universe during Reheating (radiation-dominated-type era), the fluid can be regarded as a conformal one. The large quantum fluctuations induced by the rapid transition from inflationary to effectively radiation dominated expansion become statistical fluctuations whereby both a charge excess and anisotropic pressures are produced in any finite domain. The precise magnitude of the effect for each scale is determined by the size of the averaging domain and the coupling to curvature. We look at domains which are larger than the horizon at the beginning of Reheating, but much smaller than our own horizon, and show that in a finite fraction of them the anisotropy and charge excess provide suitable conditions for a Weibel instability. If moreover the duration of reheating is shorter than the relaxation time of the fluid, then this instability can compensate or even overcome the conformal dilution of a primordial magnetic field. We show that the non-trivial topology of the magnetic field encoded in its magnetic helicity is also amplified if present.

Relativistic viscous effects on the primordial gravitational waves spectrum

We study the impact of the viscous effects of the primordial plasma on the evolution of the primordial gravitational waves (pGW) spectrum from Inflation until today, considering a self-consistent interaction that incorporates the back-reaction of the GW into the plasma. We use a relativistic causal hydrodynamic framework with a positive entropy production based on a Second-Order Theory (SOT) in which the viscous properties of the fluid are effectively described by a new set of independent variables. We study how the spin-2 modes typical of SOTs capture the simplest GW-fluid viscous interaction to first order. We consider that all non-ideal properties of the primordial plasma are due to an extra effectively massless self-interacting scalar field whose state becomes a many-particles one after Reheating and for which an effective fluid description is suitable. We numerically solve the evolution equations and explicitly compute the current GW spectrum obtaining two contributions. On the one hand we have the viscous evolution of the pGW: For the collision-dominated regime the GW source becomes negligible while in the collisionless limit there exists an absorption of the pGW energy due to the damping effect produced by the free-streaming spin-2 modes of the fluid and driven by the expansion of the Universe. The latter effect is characterized by a relative amplitude decrease of about 1 to 10 \% with respect to the GW free evolution spectrum. On the other hand we get the GW production due to the decay of the initial spin-2 fluctuations of the fluid that is negligible compared with the above-mentioned contribution. This SOT framework captures the same qualitative effects on the evolution of GW coupled to matter reported in previous works in which a kinetic theory approach has been used.

On the phase space in Double Field Theory

We present a model of (double) kinetic theory which paves the way to describe matter in a Double Field Theory background. Generalized diffeomorphisms acting on double phase space tensors are introduced. The generalized covariant derivative is replaced by a generalized Liouville operator as it happens in relativistic kinetic theory. The section condition is consistently extended and the closure of the generalized transformations is still given by the C-bracket. In this context we propose a generalized Boltzmann equation and compute the moments of the latter, obtaining an expression for the generalized energy-momentum tensor and its conservation law.

Nonlinear Fluctuations in Relativistic Causal Fluids

In the Second Order Theories (SOT) of real relativistic fluids, the non-ideal properties of the flows are described by a new set of dynamical tensor variables. In this work we explore the non-linear dynamics of those variables in a conformal fluid. Among all possible SOTs, we choose to work with the Divergence Type Theories (DTT) formalism, which ensures that the second law of thermodynamics is fulfilled non-perturbatively. The tensor modes include two divergence-free modes which have no analog in theories based on covariant generalizations of the Navier-Stokes equation, and that are particularly relevant because they couple linearly to a gravitational field. To study the dynamics of this irreducible tensor sector, we observe that in causal theories such as DTTs, thermal fluctuations induce a stochastic stirring force, which excites the tensor modes while preserving energy momentum conservation. From fluctuation-dissipation considerations it follows that the random force is Gaussian with a white spectrum. The irreducible tensor modes in turn excite vector modes, which back-react on the tensor sector, thus producing a consistent non-linear, second order description of the divergence-free tensor dynamics. Using the Martin-Siggia-Rose (MSR) formalism plus the Two-Particle Irreducible Effective Action (2PIEA) formalism, we obtain the one-loop corrected equations for the relevant two-point correlation functions of the model: the retarded propagator and the Hadamard function. The overall result of the self-consistent dynamics of the irreducible tensor modes at this order is a depletion of the spectrum in the UV sector, which suggests that tensor modes could sustain an inverse entropy cascade.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Tensor Modes in Conformal Real Relativistic Fluids

In the Second Order Theories (SOT) of real relativistic fluids, the non-ideal properties are described by a new set of dynamical tensor variables. In this work we explore the non-linear dynamics of those modes in a conformal fluid. Among all possible SOTs, we choose to work with the Divergence Type Theories (DTT) formalism, which ensures that the second law of thermodynamics is satisfied non-perturbatively. In considering a perturbative scheme within this formalism, at next to leading order a set of Maxwell-Cattaneo equations is obtained, as in e.g. Israel-Stewart theories. The tensor modes include two divergence-free modes which have no analog in theories based on covariant Navier-Stokes equations, and that are particularly relevant because they may couple linearly to a gravitational field. To study the dynamics of this irreducible tensor sector, we observe that in causal theories such as DTTs, thermal fluctuations induce a stochastic stirring force in the equations of motion, which excites the tensor modes while preserving energy momentum conservation. From fluctuation-dissipation considerations, it follows that the random force is Gaussian with a white spectrum. The irreducible tensor modes in turn excite vector modes, which back-react on the tensor sector, thus producing a consistent non-linear, second order description of the divergence-free tensor dynamics. Using the Martin-Siggia-Rose (MSR) formalism we obtain the two-point correlation function for these tensor modes at next to leading order, and the induced stochastic component of the energy-momentum tensor. We find that the thermal fluctuations induce a scale invariant spectrum at short scales, while preserving a white spectrum at large scales. This result suggests that tensor modes could sustain an entropy cascade.
