On SYZ mirror transformations

In this expository paper, we discuss how Fourier-Mukai-type transformations, which we call SYZ mirror transformations, can be applied to provide a geometric understanding of the mirror symmetry phenomena for semi-flat Calabi-Yau manifolds and toric Fano manifolds. We also speculate the possible applications of these transformations to other more general settings.

Moduli of bundles over rational surfaces and elliptic curves I: simply laced cases

It is well-known that del Pezzo surfaces of degree $9-n$ one-to-one correspond to flat $E_n$ bundles over an elliptic curve. In this paper, we construct $ADE$ bundles over a broader class of rational surfaces which we call $ADE$ surfaces, and extend the above correspondence to all flat $G$ bundles over an elliptic curve, where $G$ is any simply laced, simple, compact and simply-connected Lie group. In the sequel, we will construct $G$ bundles for non-simply laced Lie group $G$ over these rational surfaces, and extend the above correspondence to non-simply laced cases.

Open Orbits and Augmentations of Dynkin Diagrams

Given any representation V of a complex linear reductive Lie group G_0, we show that a larger semi-simple Lie group G with g=g_0 + V + V* + ..., exists precisely when V has a finite number of G_0-orbits. In particular, V admits an open G_0-orbit. Furthermore, this corresponds to an augmentation of the Dynkin diagram of g_0. The representation theory of g should be useful in describing the geometry of manifolds with stable forms as studied by Hitchin.

Hodge Theory for G2-manifolds: Intermediate Jacobians and Abel-Jacobi maps

We study the moduli space of torsion-free G2-structures on a fixed compact manifold, and define its associated universal intermediate Jacobian J. We define the Yukawa coupling and relate it to a natural pseudo-Kahler structure on J. We consider natural Chern-Simons type functionals, whose critical points give associative and coassociative cycles (calibrated submanifolds coupled with Yang-Mills connections), and also deformed Donaldson-Thomas connections. We show that the moduli spaces of these structures can be isotropically immersed in J by means of G2-analogues of Abel-Jacobi maps.

Hard Lefschetz actions in Riemannian geometry with special holonomy

It is known that the hard Lefschetz action, together with Kähler identities for Kähler (resp. hyperkähler) manifolds, determines a $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)_{sup}$ (resp. $\mathfrak{sp}(1,1)_{sup}$) Lie superalgebra action on differential forms. In this paper, we explain the geometric origin of this action, and we also generalize it to manifolds with other holonomy groups. For semi-flat Calabi-Yau (resp. hyperkähler) manifolds, these symmetries can be enlarged to a $\mathfrak{so}(2,2)_{sup}$ (resp. $\mathfrak{su}(2,2)_{sup}$) action.

Calabi-Yau components in general type hypersurfaces

For a one-parameter family of general type hypersurfaces with bases of holomorphic n-forms, we construct open covers using tropical geometry. We show that after normalization, each holomorphic n-form is approximately supported on a unique open component and such a pair approximates a Calabi-Yau hypersurface together with its holomorphic n-form as the parameter becomes large. We also show that the Lagrangian fibers in the fibration constructed by Mikhalkin are asymptotically special Lagrangian. As the holomorphic n-form plays an important role in mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau manifolds, our results is a step toward understanding mirror symmetry for general type manifolds.

Geometric structures on G2 and Spin(7)-manifolds

This article studies the geometry of moduli spaces of G2-manifolds, associative cycles, coassociative cycles and deformed Donaldson-Thomas bundles. We introduce natural symmetric cubic tensors and differential forms on these moduli spaces. They correspond to Yukawa couplings and correlation functions in M-theory. We expect that the Yukawa coupling characterizes (co-)associative fibrations on these manifolds. We discuss the Fourier transformation along such fibrations and the analog of the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow mirror conjecture for G2-manifolds. We also discuss similar structures and transformations for Spin(7)-manifolds.

Yau-Zaslow formula on K3 surfaces for non-primitive classes

We compute the genus zero family Gromov-Witten invariants for K3 surfaces using the topological recursion formula and the symplectic sum formula for a degeneration of elliptic K3 surfaces. In particular we verify the Yau-Zaslow formula for non-primitive classes of index two.

Counting Elliptic Curves in K3 Surfaces

We compute the genus one family Gromov-Witten invariants of K3 surfaces for non-primitive classes. These calculations verify Gottsche-Yau-Zaslow formula for non-primitive classes with index two. Our approach is to use the genus two topological recursion formula and the symplectic sum formula to establish relationships among various generating functions.

Instantons and branes in manifolds with vector cross product

In this paper we study the geometry of manifolds with vector cross product and its complexification. First we develop the theory of instantons and branes and study their deformations. For example they are (i) holomorphic curves and Lagrangian submanifolds in symplectic manifolds and (ii) associative submanifolds and coassociative submanifolds in G_2-manifolds. Second we classify Kahler manifolds with the complex analog of vector cross product, namely they are Calabi-Yau manifolds and hyperkahler manifolds. Furthermore we study instantons, Neumann branes and Dirichlet branes on these manifolds. For example they are special Lagrangian submanifolds with phase angle zero, complex hypersurfaces and special Lagrangian submanifolds with phase angle pi/2 in Calabi-Yau manifolds. Third we prove that, given any Calabi-Yau manifold, its isotropic knot space admits a natural holomorphic symplectic structure. We also relate the Calabi-Yau geometry of the manifold to the holomorphic symplectic geometry of its isotropic knot space.

Topological Quantum Field Theory for Calabi-Yau threefolds and G_2 manifolds

We introduce a homology theory whose Euler characteristics counts ASD bundles over four dimensional co-associative submanifolds in (almost) G_2 manifolds. As a TQFT, in relative situations, we have the Fukaya-Floer category of Lagrangians intersection in the moduli space of special Lagrangian submanifolds in CY threefolds.

Almost toric symplectic four-manifolds

Almost toric manifolds form a class of singular Lagrangian fibered symplectic manifolds that is a natural generalization of toric manifolds. Notable examples include the K3 surface, the phase space of the spherical pendulum and rational balls useful for symplectic surgeries. The main result of the paper is a complete classification up to diffeomorphism of closed almost toric four-manifolds. A key step in the proof is a geometric classification of the singular affine structures that can occur on the base of a closed almost toric four-manifold.

Geometric Aspects of Mirror Symmetry (with SYZ for Rigid CY manifolds)

In this article we discuss the geometry of moduli spaces of (1) flat bundles over special Lagrangian submanifolds and (2) deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills bundles over complex submanifolds in Calabi-Yau manifolds. These moduli spaces reflect the geometry of the Calabi-Yau itself like a mirror. Strominger, Yau and Zaslow conjecture that the mirror Calabi-Yau manifold is such a moduli space and they argue that the mirror symmetry duality is a Fourier-Mukai transformation. We review various aspects of the mirror symmetry conjecture and discuss a geometric approach in proving it. The existence of rigid Calabi-Yau manifolds poses a serious challenge to the conjecture. The proposed mirror partners for them are higher dimensional generalized Calabi-Yau manifolds. For example, the mirror partner for a certain K3 surface is a cubic fourfold and its Fano variety of lines is birational to the Hilbert scheme of two points on the K3. This hyperkahler manifold can be interpreted as the SYZ mirror of the K3 by considering singular special Lagrangian tori. We also compare the geometries between a CY and its associated generalized CY. In particular we present a new construction of Lagrangian submanifolds.

Riemannian geometry over different normed division algebra

We develop a unifed theory to study geometry of manifolds with different holonomy groups. They are classified by (1) real, complex, quaternion or octonion number they are defined over and (2) being special or not. Specialty is an orientation with respect to the corresponding normed algebra A. For example, special Riemannian A-manifolds are oriented Riemannian, Calabi-Yau, Hyperkahler and G_2-manifolds respectively. For vector bundles over such manifolds, we introduce (special) A-connections. They include holomorphic, Hermitian Yang-Mills, Anti-Self-Dual and Donaldson-Thomas connections. Similarly we introduce (special) A/2-Lagrangian submanifolds as maximally real submanifolds. They include (special) Lagrangian, complex Lagrangian, Cayley and (co-)associative submanifolds. We also discuss geometric dualities from this viewpoint: Fourier transformations on A-geometry for flat tori and a conjectural SYZ mirror transformation from (special) A-geometry to (special) A/2-Lagrangian geometry on mirror special A-manifolds.

Harmonic maps and the topology of conformally compact Einstein manifolds

We study the topology of a complete asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein manifold such that its conformal boundary has positive Yamabe invariant. We proved that all maps from such manifold into any nonpositively curved manifold are homotopically trivial. Our proof is based on a Bochner type argument on harmonic maps.

A general Plucker formula

We prove a formula which compares intersection numbers of conormal varieties of two projective varieties and their dual varieties. When one of them is linear, we can recover the usual Plucker formula for the degree of the dual variety. The basic strategy of the proof is to study a category of Lagrangian subvarieties in the cotangent bundle of a projective space under a birational transformation.

The signature of a toric variety

We identify a combinatorial quantity (the alternating sum of the h-vector) defined for any simple polytope as the signature of a toric variety. This quantity was introduced by Charney and Davis in their work, which in particular showed that its non-negativity is closely related to a conjecture of Hopf on the Euler characteristic of a non-positively curved manifold. We prove positive (or non-negative) lower bounds for this quantity under geometric hypotheses on the polytope. These hypotheses lead to ampleness (or weaker conditions) for certain line bundles on toric divisors, and then the lower bounds follow from calculations using the Hirzebruch Signature Formula. Moreoever, we show that under these hypotheses on the polytope, the i-th L-class of the corresponding toric variety is (-1)^i times an effective class for any i.
