On the Turbulent Behavior of a Magnetically Confined Plasma Near the X-Point

We construct a model for the turbulence near the X-point of a Tokamak device and, under suitable assumptions, we arrive to a closed equation for the electric field potential fluctuations. The analytical and numerical analysis is focused on a reduced two-dimensional formulation of the dynamics, which allows a direct mapping to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. The main merit of this study is to outline how the turbulence near the X-point, in correspondence to typical operation conditions of medium and large size Tokamaks, is dominated by the enstrophy cascade from large to smaller spatial scales.

One dimensional reduced model for ITER relevant energetic particle transport

We set up a mapping procedure able to translate the evolution of the radial profile of fast ions, interacting with Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmodes, into the dynamics of an equivalent one dimensional bump-on-tail system. We apply this mapping technique to reproduce ITER relevant simulations, which clearly outlined deviations from the diffusive quasi-linear (QL) model. Our analysis demonstrates the capability of the one-dimensional beam-plasma dynamics to predict the relevant features of the non-linear hybrid LIGKA/HAGIS simulations. In particular, we clearly identify how the deviation from the QL evolutive profiles is due to the presence of avalanche processes. A detailed analysis regarding the reduced dimensionality is also addressed, by means of phase-space slicing based on constants of motion. In the conclusions, we outline the main criticalities and outcomes of the procedure, which must be satisfactorily addressed to make quantitative prediction on the observed outgoing fluxes in a Tokamak device.

Contribution to the angular momentum transport paradigm for accretion disks

We analyze the stationary configuration of a thin axisymmetric stellar accretion disk, neglecting non-linear terms in the plasma poloidal velocity components. We set up the Grad-Shafranov equation for the system, including the plasma differential rotation (according to the so-called co-rotation theorem). Then, we study the small scale backreaction of the disk to the central body magnetic field and we calculate the resulting radial infalling velocity. We show that the small scale radial oscillation of the perturbed magnetic surface is associated to the emergence of relevant toroidal current densities, able to balance the Ohm law even in the presence of quasi-ideal values of the plasma resistivity. The contribution to the infalling velocity of the averaged backreaction contrasts accretion, but it remains negligible as far as the induced magnetic field is small compared to that of the central body.

General features of the linear crystalline morphology of accretion disks

In this paper, we analyze the so-called Master Equation of the linear backreaction of a plasma disk in the central object magnetic field, when small scale ripples are considered. This study allows to single out two relevant physical properties of the linear disk backreaction: (i) the appearance of a vertical growth of the magnetic flux perturbations; (ii) the emergence of sequence of magnetic field O-points, crucial for the triggering of local plasma instabilities. We first analyze a general Fourier approach to the solution of the addressed linear partial differential problem. This technique allows to show how the vertical gradient of the backreaction is, in general, inverted with respect to the background one. Instead, the fundamental harmonic solution constitutes a specific exception for which the background and the perturbed profiles are both decaying. Then, we study the linear partial differential system from the point of view of a general variable separation method. The obtained profile describes the crystalline behavior of the disk. Using a simple rescaling, the governing equation is reduced to the second order differential Whittaker equation. The zeros of the radial magnetic field are found by using the solution written in terms Kummer functions. The possible implications of the obtained morphology of the disk magnetic profile are then discussed in view of the jet formation.

Contributions to the linear and non-linear theory of the beam-plasma interaction

We focus our attention on some relevant aspects of the beam-plasma instability in order to refine some features of the linear and non-linear dynamics. After a re-analysis of the Poisson equation and of the assumption dealing with the background plasma in the form of a linear dielectric, we study the non-perturbative properties of the linear dispersion relation, showing the necessity for a better characterization of the mode growth rate in those flat regions of the distribution function where the Landau formula is no longer predictive. We then upgrade the original N-body approach, in order to include a return current in the background plasma. This correction term is responsible for smaller saturation levels and growth rates of the Langmuir modes, as result of the energy density transferred to the plasma via the return current. Finally, we include friction effects, as those due to the collective influence of all the plasma charges on the motion of the beam particles. The resulting force induces a progressive resonance detuning, because particles are losing energy and decreasing their velocity. This friction phenomenon gives rise to a deformation of the distribution function, associated with a significant growth of the less energetic particle population. The merit of this work is to show how a fine analysis of the beam-plasma instability outlines a number of subtleties about the linear, intermediate and late dynamics which can be of relevance when such a system is addressed as a paradigm to describe relevant nonlinear wave-particle phenomena.

Resonance overlap and non-linear features of the beam-plasma system

The beam-plasma instability can be addressed as a reduced model in several contexts of plasma physics, from space to fusion plasma. In this paper, we review and refine some non-linear features of this model. Specifically, by analyzing the dependence of the non-linear velocity spread as a function of the linear growth rate, we discuss the effective size of the resonance in view of its role in the spectral overlap at saturation. The relevance of this characterization relies on the necessity of a quantitative determination of the overlap degree to discriminate among different transport regimes of the self consistent dynamics. The analysis is enriched with a study of the phase-space dynamics by means of the Lagrangian Coherent Structure technique, in order to define the transport barriers of the system describing the relevant features of the overlap process. Finally, we discuss relevant features related to the mode saturation levels.

Shear Alfvén and acoustic continuum in general axisymmetric toroidal geometry

The equations describing the continuous spectrum of shear Alfvén and ion sound waves propagating along magnetic field lines are introduced and solved in the ballooning space for general geometry in the ideal MHD limit. This approach is equivalent to earlier analyses by Chu et al. 1992 [Phys. Fluids B 4, 3713 (1992)] but the present formulation in the ballooning space allows to readily extend it to include gyrokinetic and three-dimensional equilibrium effects. In particular, following Chen and Zonca 2017 [Phys. Plasmas 24, 072511 (2017)], the MHD limit is adopted to illustrate the general methodology in a simple case, and the equations are solved within the framework of Floquet and Hill's equation theory. The connection of shear Alfvén and ion sound wave continuum structures to the generalized plasma inertia in the general fishbone like dispersion relation is also illustrated and discussed. As an application, the continuous frequency spectrum is calculated for a reference equilibrium of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility. The results are compared with those obtained by the MARS code adopting the standard methodology, demonstrating excellent agreement.

Reanalysis of the beam-plasma instability using the Dyson-like equation formalism

We analyze the problem of the beam-plasma instability via the analytical treatment of the so-called Dyson equation. We first compared the prediction of the model constructed by fixing the electric field amplitude with respect to a N-body Hamiltonian numerical simulation. Then, we demonstrate that the shortcomings of such an analytical formulation must be essentially identified with the breaking-down of the self-consistent evolution of the field and the particle distribution function.

Resonance overlap and non-linear velocity spread in Hamiltonian beam-plasma systems

We analyze some specific features of the beam-plasma instability. In particular, non-perturbative effects in the dispersion relation are studied when the standard perturbative inverse Landau damping treatment breaks down. We also elucidate how only the global distortion of the profile rather than the clump width is truly predictive of resonance overlap at saturation.

Quasi-linear model for the beam-plasma instability: analysis of the self-consistent evolution

We re-analyze the quasi-linear self consistent dynamics for the beam-plasma instability, by comparing the theory predictions to numerical simulations of the corresponding Hamiltonian system. While the diffusive features of the asymptotic dynamics are reliably predicted, the early temporal mesoscale transport appears less efficient in reproducing the convective feature of the self-consistent scenario. As a result, we identify the origin of the observed discrepancy in the underlying quasi-linear model assumption that the distribution function is quasi-stationary. Furthermore, we provide a correction to the instantaneous quasi-linear growth rate based on a linear expansion of the distribution function time dependence, and we successfully test this revised formulation for the spectral evolution during the temporal mesoscale.

Coexistence of Magneto-Rotational and Jeans Instabilities in an Axisymmetric Nebula

We analyze the magneto-rotational instability (MRI) effects on gravitational collapse and its influence on the instability critical scale. In particular, we study an axisymmetric nonstratified differentially rotating cloud, embedded in a small magnetic field, and we perform a local linear stability analysis, including the self gravity of the system. We demonstrate that the linear evolution of the perturbations is characterized by the emergence of an anisotropy degree of the perturbed mass densities. Starting with spherical growing overdensities, we see that they naturally acquire an anisotropy of order unity in their shape. Despite the linear character of our analysis, we infer that such a seed of anisotropy can rapidly grow in a nonlinear regime, leading to the formation of filament-like structures. However, we show how such an anisotropy is essentially an intrinsic feature of the Jean instability, and how MRI only plays a significant role in fixing the critical scale of the mode spectrum. We then provide a characterization of the present analysis in terms of the cosmological setting, in order to provide an outlook of how the present results could concern the formation of large-scale structures across the Universe.

Behavior of thin disk crystalline morphology in the presence of corrections to ideal magnetohydrodynamics

We analyze an axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamics configuration, describing the morphology of a purely differentially rotating thin plasma disk, in which linear and non-linear perturbations are triggered associated with microscopic magnetic structures. We study the evolution of the non-stationary correction in the limit in which the co-rotation condition (i.e., the dependence of the disk angular velocity on the magnetic flux function) is preserved and the poloidal velocity components are neglected. The main feature we address here is the influence of ideal (finite electron inertia) and collisional (resistivity, viscosity, and thermal conductivity) effects on the behavior of the flux function perturbation and of the associated small-scale modifications in the disk. We analyze two different regimes in which resistivity or viscosity dominates and study the corresponding linear and non-linear behaviors of the perturbation evolution, i.e., when the backreaction magnetic field is negligible or comparable to the background one, respectively. We demonstrate that when resistivity dominates, a radial oscillating morphology (crystalline structure) emerges and it turns out to be damped in time, in both the linear and non-linear regimes, but in such a way that the resulting transient can be implemented in the description of relevant astrophysical processes, for instance, associated with jet formation or cataclysmic variables. When the viscosity effect dominates the dynamics, only the non-linear regime is available and a very fast instability is triggered.

Study of MRI in stratified viscous plasma configuration

We analyze the morphology of the Magneto-rotational Instability (MRI) for a stratified viscous plasma disk configuration in differential rotation, taking into account the so-called corotation theorem for the background profile. In order to select the intrinsic Alfvénic nature of MRI, we deal with an incompressible plasma and we adopt a formulation of the local perturbation analysis based on the use of the magnetic flux function as a dynamical variable. Our study outlines, as consequence of the corotation condition, a marked asymmetry of the MRI with respect to the equatorial plane, particularly evident in a complete damping of the instability over a positive critical height on the equatorial plane. We also emphasize how such a feature is already present (although less pronounced) even in the ideal case, restoring a dependence of the MRI on the stratified morphology of the gravitational field.

On the viability of the single wave model for the beam plasma instability

We analyze the interaction of a cold fast electron beam with a thermalized plasma, in the presence of many Langmuir modes. The work aims at characterizing the deviation of the system behavior from the single mode approximation, both with respect to a consistent spectral analysis of the most unstable mode harmonics and with respect to the presence of a dense spectrum, containing linearly unstable and stable modes. We demonstrate how, on the one hand, the total energy fraction absorbed by the harmonics is negligible at all (by evaluating its total amount) and, on the other hand, the additional Langmuir modes can be excited via an avalanche mechanism, responsible for a transport in the particle velocity space. In particular, we show that the spectral broadening outlines a universal shape and the distribution function, associated to the avalanche mechanism, has an asymptotic plateau, differently from the coherent structures characterizing the single wave model.

Mixed diffusive-convective relaxation of a broad beam of energetic particles in cold plasma

We revisit the applications of quasi-linear theory as a paradigmatic model for weak plasma turbulence and the associated bump-on-tail problem. The work, presented here, is built around the idea that large-amplitude or strongly shaped beams do not relax through diffusion only and that there exists an intermediate time scale where the relaxations are convective (ballistic-like). We cast this novel idea in the rigorous form of a self-consistent nonlinear dynamical model, which generalizes the classic equations of the quasi-linear theory to "broad" beams with internal structure. We also present numerical simulation results of the relaxation of a broad beam of energetic particles in cold plasma. These generally demonstrate the mixed diffusive-convective features of supra-thermal particle transport; and essentially depend on nonlinear wave-particle interactions and phase-space structures. Taking into account modes of the stable linear spectrum is crucial for the self-consistent evolution of the distribution function and the fluctuation intensity spectrum.

Effect of a stochastic electric field on plasma confinement in FTU

We discuss a stochastic model for the behavior of electrons in a magnetically confined plasma having axial symmetry. The aim of the work is to provide an explanation for the density limit observed in the Frascati Tokamak Upgrade machine. The dynamical framework deals with an electron embedded in a stationary and uniform magnetic field and affected by an orthogonal random electric field. The behavior of the average plasma profile is determined by the appropriate Fokker-Planck equation associated to the considered model and the disruptive effects of the stochastic electric field is shown. The comparison between the addressed model and the experimental data allows to fix the relevant spatial scale of such a stochastic field. It is found to be of the order of the Tokamak micro-physics scale, i.e. few millimeters. Moreover, it is clarified how the diffusion process outlines a dependence on the magnetic field as $\sim B^{-3/2}$.
