Reduction of quad-equations consistent around a cuboctahedron I: additive case

In this paper, we consider a reduction of a new system of partial difference equations, which was obtained in our previous paper (Joshi and Nakazono, arXiv:1906.06650) and shown to be consistent around a cuboctahedron. We show that this system reduces to $A_2^{(1)\ast}$-type discrete Painlevé equations by considering a periodic reduction of a three-dimensional lattice constructed from overlapping cuboctahedra.

Discrete Painlevé Equations

This expository article written for the Notices of the American Mathematical Society provides an overview of transcendental functions arising as solutions of the discrete Painlevé equations, for which the developments of the last two decades have been rich and dynamic. These equations arise at the center of many viewpoints: random matrix theory, algebra, algebraic geometry, dynamical systems and the theory of transcendental functions. The purpose of this article is to reveal this confluence and modern perspectives on it.

Re-factorising a QRT map

A QRT map is the composition of two involutions on a biquadratic curve: one switching the $x$-coordinates of two intersection points with a given horizontal line, and the other switching the $y$-coordinates of two intersections with a vertical line. Given a QRT map, a natural question is to ask whether it allows a decomposition into further involutions. Here we provide new answers to this question and show how they lead to a new class of maps, as well as known HKY maps and quadrirational Yang-Baxter maps.

Constructing Initial Value Spaces of Lattice Equations

In this paper, we examine the space of initial values for integrable lattice equations, which are lattice equations classified by Adler {\em et al} (2003), known as ABS equations. By considering the map which iterates the solution along particular directions on the lattice, we perform resolutions of singularities for several examples of ABS equations for the first time. Our geometric observations lead to new Miura transformations and reductions to ordinary difference equations.

A review of elliptic difference Painlevé equations

Discrete Painlevé equations are nonlinear, nonautonomous difference equations of second-order. They have coefficients that are explicit functions of the independent variable $n$ and there are three different types of equations according to whether the coefficient functions are linear, exponential or elliptic functions of $n$. In this paper, we focus on the elliptic type and give a review of the construction of such equations on the $E_8$ lattice. The first such construction was given by Sakai \cite{SakaiH2001:MR1882403}. We focus on recent developments giving rise to more examples of elliptic discrete Painlevé equations.

Elliptic asymptotics in $q$-discrete Painlevé equations

We study the asymptotic behaviour of two multiplicative- ($q$-) discrete Painlevé equations as their respective independent variable goes to infinity. It is shown that the generic asymptotic behaviours are given by elliptic functions. We extend the method of averaging to these equations to show that the energies are slowly varying. The Picard-Fuchs equation is derived for a special case of $q$-P$_{\rm III}$

Generalized Solitary Waves in a Finite-Difference Korteweg-de Vries Equation

Generalized solitary waves with exponentially small non-decaying far field oscillations have been studied in a range of singularly-perturbed differential equations, including higher-order Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations. Many of these studies used exponential asymptotics to compute the behaviour of the oscillations, revealing that they appear in the solution as special curves known as Stokes lines are crossed. Recent studies have identified similar behaviour in solutions to difference equations. Motivated by these studies, the seventh-order KdV and a hierarchy of higher-order KdV equations are investigated, identifying conditions which produce generalized solitary wave solutions. These results form a foundation for the study of infinite-order differential equations, which are used as a model for studying lattice equations. Finally, a lattice KdV equation is generated using finite-difference discretization, in which a lattice generalized solitary wave solution is found.

Integrable semi-discretization of the massive Thirring system in laboratory coordinates

Several integrable semi-discretizations are known in the literature for the massive Thirring system in characteristic coordinates. We present for the first time an integrable semi-discretization of the massive Thirring system in laboratory coordinates. Our approach relies on the relation between the continuous massive Thirring system and the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice. The Backlund transformation for solutions to the Ablowitz-Ladik lattice and the time evolution of the massive Thirring system in laboratory coordinates are combined together in the derivation of the Lax system for the integrable semi-discretization of the massive Thirring system.

Nonlinear $q$-Stokes phenomena for $q$-Painlevé I

We consider the asymptotic behaviour of solutions of the first $q$-difference Painlevé equation in the limits $|q|\rightarrow 1$ and $n\rightarrow\infty$. Using asymptotic power series, we describe four families of solutions that contain free parameters hidden beyond-all-orders. These asymptotic solutions exhibit Stokes phenomena, which is typically invisible to classical power series methods. In order to investigate such phenomena we apply exponential asymptotic techniques to obtain mathematical descriptions of the rapid switching behaviour associated with Stokes curves. Through this analysis, we also determine the regions of the complex plane in which the asymptotic behaviour is described by a power series expression, and find that the Stokes curves are described by curves known as $q$-spirals.

Asymptotic behaviour of the third Painlevé transcendents in the space of initial values

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of the generic ($D_6^{(1)}$-type) third Painlevé equation in the space of initial values as the independent variable approaches infinity (or zero) and show that the limit set of each solution is compact and connected. Moreover, we prove that any solution with essential singularity at infinity has an infinite number of poles and zeroes, and similarly at the origin.

Asymptotic Behaviours Given by Elliptic Functions in $P_I$--$P_V$

Following the study of complex elliptic-function-type asymptotic behaviours of the Painlevé equations by Boutroux and Joshi and Kruskal for $P_I$ and $P_{II}$, we provide new results for elliptic-function-type behaviours admitted by $P_{III}$, $P_{IV}$, and $P_{V}$, in the limit as the independent variable $z$ approaches infinity. We show how the Hamiltonian $E_{\rm J}$ of each equation $\rm P_{\rm J}$, $\rm J=I, \ldots , V$, varies across a local period parallelogram of the leading-order behaviour, by applying the method of averaging in the complex $z$-plane. Surprisingly, our results show that all the equations $P_I-P_{V}$ share the same modulation of $E$ to the first two orders.

Geometric description of discrete power function associated with the sixth Painlevé equation

In this paper, we consider the discrete power function associated with the sixth Painlevé equation. This function is a special solution of the so-called cross-ratio equation with a similarity constraint. We show in this paper that this system is embedded in a cubic lattice with $\widetilde{W}(3A_1^{(1)})$ symmetry. By constructing the action of $\widetilde{W}(3A_1^{(1)})$ as a subgroup of $\widetilde{W}(D_4^{(1)})$, i.e., the symmetry group of P$_{\rm VI}$, we show how to relate $\widetilde{W}(D_4^{(1)})$ to the symmetry group of the lattice. Moreover, by using translations in $\widetilde{W}(3A_1^{(1)})$, we explain the odd-even structure appearing in previously known explicit formulas in terms of the $τ$ function.

Asymptotic behaviour of the fifth Painlevé transcendents in the space of initial values

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of the fifth Painlevé equation as the independent variable approaches zero and infinity in the space of initial values. We show that the limit set of each solution is compact and connected and, moreover, that any solution with the essential singularity at zero has an infinite number of poles and zeroes, and any solution with the essential singularity at infinity has infinite number of poles and takes value $1$ infinitely many times.

Elliptic Painlevé equations from next-nearest-neighbor translations on the $E_8^{(1)}$ lattice

The well known elliptic discrete Painlevé equation of Sakai is constructed by a standard translation on the $E_8^{(1)}$ lattice, given by nearest neighbor vectors. In this paper, we give a new elliptic discrete Painlevé equation obtained by translations along next-nearest-neighbor vectors. This equation is a generic (8-parameter) version of a 2-parameter elliptic difference equation found by reduction from Adler's partial difference equation, the so-called Q4 equation. We also provide a projective reduction of the well known equation of Sakai.

Lax pairs of discrete Painlevé equations: $(A_2+A_1)^{(1)}$ case

In this paper, we provide a comprehensive method for constructing Lax pairs of discrete Painlevé equations by using a reduced hypercube structure. In particular, we consider the $A_5^{(1)}$-surface $q$-Painlevé system which has the affine Weyl group symmetry of type $(A_2+A_1)^{(1)}$. Two new Lax pairs are found.

Stokes Phenomena in Discrete Painlevé II

We consider the asymptotic behaviour of the second discrete Painlevé equation in the limit as the independent variable becomes large. Using asymptotic power series, we find solutions that are asymptotically pole-free within some region of the complex plane. These asymptotic solutions exhibit Stokes phenomena, which is typically invisible to classical power series methods. We subsequently apply exponential asymptotic techniques to investigate such phenomena, and obtain mathematical descriptions of the rapid switching behaviour associated with Stokes curves. Through this analysis, we determine the regions of the complex plane in which the asymptotic approximations are valid, and find that the behaviour of these asymptotic solutions shares a number of features with the tronquée and tri-tronquée solutions of the second continuous Painlevé equation.

Analytic solutions of $q$-$P(A_1)$ near its critical points

For transcendental functions that solve non-linear $q$-difference equations, the best descriptions available are the ones obtained by expansion near critical points at the origin and infinity. We describe such solutions of a $q$-discrete Painlevé equation, with 7 parameters whose initial value space is a rational surface of type $A_1^{(1)}$. The resultant expansions are shown to approach series expansions of the classical sixth Painlevé equation in the continuum limit.
