Curvature-informed multi-task learning for graph networks

Properties of interest for crystals and molecules, such as band gap, elasticity, and solubility, are generally related to each other: they are governed by the same underlying laws of physics. However, when state-of-the-art graph neural networks attempt to predict multiple properties simultaneously (the multi-task learning (MTL) setting), they frequently underperform a suite of single property predictors. This suggests graph networks may not be fully leveraging these underlying similarities. Here we investigate a potential explanation for this phenomenon: the curvature of each property's loss surface significantly varies, leading to inefficient learning. This difference in curvature can be assessed by looking at spectral properties of the Hessians of each property's loss function, which is done in a matrix-free manner via randomized numerical linear algebra. We evaluate our hypothesis on two benchmark datasets (Materials Project (MP) and QM8) and consider how these findings can inform the training of novel multi-task learning models.

Hadamard-type inequalities for $k$-positive matrices

We establish Hadamard-type inequalities for a class of symmetric matrices called $k$-positive matrices for which the $m$-th elementary symmetric functions of their eigenvalues are positive for all $m\leq k$. These matrices arise naturally in the study of $k$-Hessian equations in Partial Differential Equations. For each $k$-positive matrix, we show that the sum of its principal minors of size $k$ is not larger than the $k$-th elementary symmetric function of their diagonal entries. The case $k=n$ corresponds to the classical Hadamard inequality for positive definite matrices. Some consequences are also obtained.

A spectral characterization and an approximation scheme for the Hessian eigenvalue

We revisit the $k$-Hessian eigenvalue problem on a smooth, bounded, $(k-1)$-convex domain in $\mathbb R^n$. First, we obtain a spectral characterization of the $k$-Hessian eigenvalue as the infimum of the first eigenvalues of linear second-order elliptic operators whose coefficients belong to the dual of the corresponding Gårding cone. Second, we introduce a non-degenerate inverse iterative scheme to solve the eigenvalue problem for the $k$-Hessian operator. We show that the scheme converges, with a rate, to the $k$-Hessian eigenvalue for all $k$. When $2\leq k\leq n$, we also prove a local $L^1$ convergence of the Hessian of solutions of the scheme. Hyperbolic polynomials play an important role in our analysis.

Solvability of a class of singular fourth order equations of Monge-Ampère type

We study the solvability of the second boundary value problem for a class of highly singular fourth order equations of Monge-Ampère type. They arise in the approximation of convex functionals subject to a convexity constraint using Abreu type equations. Both the Legendre transform and partial Legendre transform are used in our analysis. In two dimensions, we establish global solutions to the second boundary value problem for highly singular Abreu equations where the right hand sides are of $q$-Laplacian type for all $q>1$. We show that minimizers of variational problems with a convexity constraint in two dimensions that arise from the Rochet-Choné model in the monopolist's problem in economics with $q$-power cost can be approximated in the uniform norm by solutions of the Abreu equation for a full range of $q$.

Optimal boundary regularity for some singular Monge-Ampère equations on bounded convex domains

By constructing explicit supersolutions, we obtain the optimal global Hölder regularity for several singular Monge-Ampère equations on general bounded open convex domains including those related to complete affine hyperbolic spheres, and proper affine hyperspheres. Our analysis reveals that certain singular-looking equations, such as $ \det D^2 u = |u|^{-n-2-k} (x\cdot Du -u)^{-k} $ with zero boundary data, have unexpected degenerate nature.

Uniqueness for a system of Monge-Ampère equations

In this note, we prove a uniqueness result, up to a positive multiplicative constant, for nontrivial convex solutions to a system of Monge-Ampère equations \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{alignedat}{2} \det D^2 u~& = γ|v|^p~&&\text{in} ~ Ω, \\\ \det D^2 v~& = μ|u|^{n^2/p}~&&\text{in} ~ Ω, \\\ u=v &= 0~&&\text{on}~ \partialΩ\end{alignedat} \right. \end{equation*} on bounded, smooth and uniformly convex domains $Ω\subset R^n$ provided that $p$ is close to $n\geq 2$. When $p=n$, we show that the uniqueness holds for general bounded convex domains $Ω\subset R^n$.

On approximating minimizers of convex functionals with a convexity constraint by singular Abreu equations without uniform convexity

We revisit the problem of approximating minimizers of certain convex functionals subject to a convexity constraint by solutions of fourth order equations of Abreu type. This approximation problem was studied in previous works of Carlier-Radice (Approximation of variational problems with a convexity constraint by PDEs of Abreu type. Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations. 58 (2019), no. 5, Art. 170) and the author (Singular Abreu equations and minimizers of convex functionals with a convexity constraint, arXiv:1811.02355v3, Comm. Pure Appl. Math., to appear), under the uniform convexity of both the Lagrangian and constraint barrier. By introducing a new approximating scheme, we completely remove the uniform convexity of both the Lagrangian and constraint barrier. Our analysis is applicable to variational problems motivated by the original 2D Rochet-Choné model in the monopolist's problem in Economics, and variational problems arising in the analysis of wrinkling patterns in floating elastic shells in Elasticity.

Singular Abreu equations and minimizers of convex functionals with a convexity constraint

We study the solvability of second boundary value problems of fourth order equations of Abreu type arising from approximation of convex functionals whose Lagrangians depend on the gradient variable, subject to a convexity constraint. These functionals arise in different scientific disciplines such as Newton's problem of minimal resistance in physics and monopolist's problem in economics. The right hand sides of our Abreu type equations are quasilinear expressions of second order; they are highly singular and a priori just measures. However, our analysis in particular shows that minimizers of the 2D Rochet-Choné model perturbed by a strictly convex lower order term, under a convexity constraint, can be approximated in the uniform norm by solutions of the second boundary value problems of singular Abreu equations.

Minimum and maximum conductance of a thin film layer bridged interface: the role of anharmonicity and layer thickness

We study the role of anharmonicity at interfaces with an added intermediate layer designed to facilitate interfacial phonon transport. Our results demonstrate that while in the harmonic limit the bridge may lower the conductance due to fewer available channels, anharmonicity can strongly enhance the thermal conductance of the bridged structure due to added inelastic channels. Moreover, we show that the effect of anharmonicity on the conductance can be tuned by varying temperature or the bridge layer thickness, as both parameters change the total rate of occurrence of phonon-phonon scattering processes. Additionally, we show that the additive rule of thermal resistances(Ohms law) is valid for bridge layer thickness quite shorter than the average bulk MFP, beyond the regime it would be expected to fail.

Global Hölder estimates for 2D linearized Monge-Ampère equations with right-hand side in divergence form

We establish global Hölder estimates for solutions to inhomogeneous linearized Monge-Ampère equations in two dimensions with the right hand side being the divergence of a bounded vector field. These equations arise in the semi-geostrophic equations in meteorology and in the approximation of convex functionals subject to a convexity constraint using fourth order Abreu type equations. Our estimates hold under natural assumptions on the domain, boundary data and Monge-Ampère measure being bounded away from zero and infinity. They are an affine invariant and degenerate version of global Hölder estimates by Murthy-Stampacchia and Trudinger for second order elliptic equations in divergence form.

Asymptotic Behavior of Allen-Cahn Type Energies and Neumann Eigenvalues via Inner Variations

We use the notion of first and second inner variations as a bridge allowing one to pass to the limit of first and second Gateaux variations for the Allen-Cahn, Cahn-Hilliard and Ohta-Kawasaki energies. Under suitable assumptions, this allows us to show that stability passes to the sharp interface limit, including boundary terms, by considering non-compactly supported velocity and acceleration fields in our variations. This complements the results of Tonegawa, and Tonegawa and Wickramasekera, where interior stability is shown to pass to the limit. As a further application, we prove an asymptotic upper bound on the $k^{th}$ Neumann eigenvalue of the linearization of the Allen-Cahn operator, relating it to the $k^{th}$ Robin eigenvalue of the Jacobi operator, taken with respect to the minimal surface arising as the asymptotic location of the zero set of the Allen-Cahn critical points. We also prove analogous results for eigenvalues of the linearized operators arising in the Cahn-Hilliard and Ohta-Kawasaki settings. These complement the earlier result of the first author where such an asymptotic upper bound is achieved for Dirichlet eigenvalues for the linearized Allen-Cahn operator. Our asymptotic upper bound on Allen-Cahn Neumann eigenvalues extends, in one direction, the asymptotic equivalence of these eigenvalues established in the work of Kowalczyk in the two-dimensional case where the minimal surface is a line segment and specific Allen-Cahn critical points are suitably constructed.

Phonon-mediated thermal transport at exponentially mass-graded interfaces: A computational study

We numerically investigate thermal transport at solid-solid interfaces with graded intermediate layers whose masses vary exponentially from one side to the other. Using Non-Equilibrium Green's Function and Non-Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics simulations, we show that an exponentially mass-graded junction with a finite thickness can result in 68\% of enhancement in thermal conductance larger compared to a single bridging layer (29\%) and a linear mass-graded junction (64\%) of similar thickness. We examine how the thermal conductance at such interfaces is influenced by geometric qualities and strength of anharmonicity. For geometric properties, we tested the effects from number of layers and the junction thickness. In the absence of anharmonicity, increasing the number of layers results in better elastic phonon transmission at each individual boundary, countered by the decrease of available conducting channels. Consequently, in the harmonic regime, conductance initially increases with number of layers due to better bridging, but quickly saturates. The presence of slight anharmonic effects (at ultra-low temperature T = 2 K) turns the saturation into a monotonically increasing trend. Anharmonic effects can facilitate interfacial thermal transport through the thermalization of phonons. At high temperature, however, the role of anharmonicity as a facilitator of interfacial thermal transport reverses. Strong anharmonicity introduces significant intrinsic resistance, overruling the enhancement in thermal conduction at the boundaries. Our analysis shows that in our model Lennard-Jones system, the influence of a mass-graded junction on thermal conductance is dominated by the phonon thermalization through anharmonic effects, while elastic phonon transmission plays a secondary role.

Polynomial decay in $W^{2,\varepsilon}$ estimates for viscosity supersolutions of fully nonlinear elliptic equations

We prove $W^{2,\varepsilon}$ estimates for viscosity supersolutions of fully nonlinear, uniformly elliptic equations where $\varepsilon$ decays polynomially with respect to the ellipticity ratio of the equations. Our result is related to a conjecture of Armstrong-Silvestre-Smart [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 65 (2012), no. 8, 1169--1184] which predicts a linear decay for $\varepsilon$ with respect to the ellipticity ratio of the equations.

Hölder regularity of the 2D dual semigeostrophic equations via analysis of linearized Monge-Ampère equations

We obtain the Hölder regularity of time derivative of solutions to the dual semigeostrophic equations in two dimensions when the initial potential density is bounded away from zero and infinity. Our main tool is an interior Hölder estimate in two dimensions for an inhomogeneous linearized Monge-Ampère equation with right hand side being the divergence of a bounded vector field. As a further application of our Hölder estimate, we prove the Hölder regularity of the polar factorization for time-dependent maps in two dimensions with densities bounded away from zero and infinity. Our applications improve previous work by G. Loeper who considered the cases of densities sufficiently close to a positive constant.

The eigenvalue problem for the Monge-Ampère operator on general bounded convex domains

In this paper, we study the eigenvalue problem for the Monge-Ampère operator on general bounded convex domains. We prove the existence, uniqueness and variational characterization of the Monge-Ampère eigenvalue. The convex Monge-Ampère eigenfunctions are shown to be unique up to positive multiplicative constants. Our results are the singular counterpart of previous results by P-L. Lions and K. Tso in the smooth, uniformly convex setting. Moreover, we prove the stability of the Monge-Ampère eigenvalue with respect to the Hausdorff convergence of the domains. This stability property makes it possible to investigate the Brunn-Minkowski, isoperimetric and reverse isoperimetric inequalities for the Monge-Ampère eigenvalue in their full generality. We also discuss related existence and regularity results for a class of degenerate Monge-Ampère equations.

The second boundary value problem of the prescribed affine mean curvature equation and related linearized Monge-Ampère equation

These lecture notes are concerned with the solvability of the second boundary value problem of the prescribed affine mean curvature equation and related regularity theory of the Monge-Ampère and linearized Monge-Ampère equations. The prescribed affine mean curvature equation is a fully nonlinear, fourth order, geometric partial differential equation of the following form $$\sum_{i, j=1}^n U^{ij}\frac{\partial^2}{\partial {x_i}\partial{x_j}}\left[(\det D^2 u)^{-\frac{n+1}{n+2}}\right]=f$$ where $(U^{ij})$ is the cofactor matrix of the Hessian matrix $D^2 u$ of a locally uniformly convex function $u$. Its variant is related to the problem of finding Kähler metrics of constant scalar curvature in complex geometry. We first introduce the background of the prescribed affine mean curvature equation which can be viewed as a coupled system of Monge-Ampère and linearized Monge-Ampère equations. Then we state key open problems and present the solution of the second boundary value problem that prescribes the boundary values of the solution $u$ and its Hessian determinant $\det D^2 u$. Its proof uses important tools from the boundary regularity theory of the Monge-Ampère and linearized Monge-Ampère equations that we will present in the lecture notes.
