Free energy of spherical Coulomb gases with point charges

We consider two-dimensional Coulomb gases on the Riemann sphere with determinantal or Pfaffian structures, under external potentials that are invariant under rotations around the axis connecting the north and south poles, and with microscopic point charges inserted at the poles. These models can be interpreted as Coulomb gases on the complex plane with weakly confining potentials, where the associated droplet is the entire complex plane. For these models, we derive precise asymptotic expansions of the free energies, including the constant terms.

Conformal field theory of Gaussian free fields in a multiply connected domain

We implement a version of conformal field theory (CFT) that gives a connection to SLE in a multiply connected domain. Our approach is based on the Gaussian free field and applies to CFTs with central charge $c \leq 1$. In this framework we introduce the generalized Eguchi-Ooguri equations and use them to derive the explicit form of Ward's equations, which describe the insertion of a stress tensor in terms of Lie derivatives and differential operators depending on the Teicmüller modular parameters. Furthermore, by implementing the BPZ equations, we provide a conformal field theoretic realization of an SLE in a multiply connected domain, which in particular suggests its drift function, and construct a class of martingale observables for this SLE process.

Partition functions of determinantal and Pfaffian Coulomb gases with radially symmetric potentials

We consider random normal matrix and planar symplectic ensembles, which can be interpreted as two-dimensional Coulomb gases having determinantal and Pfaffian structures, respectively. For general radially symmetric potentials, we derive the asymptotic expansions of the log-partition functions up to and including the $O(1)$-terms as the number $N$ of particles increases. Notably, our findings stress that the formulas of the $O(\log N)$- and $O(1)$-terms in these expansions depend on the connectivity of the droplet. For random normal matrix ensembles, our formulas agree with the predictions proposed by Zabrodin and Wiegmann up to a universal additive constant. For planar symplectic ensembles, the expansions contain a new kind of ingredient in the $O(N)$-terms, the logarithmic potential evaluated at the origin in addition to the entropy of the ensembles.

Pole dynamics and an integral of motion for multiple SLE(0)

We describe the Loewner chains of the real locus of a class of real rational functions whose critical points are on the real line. Our main result is that the poles of the rational function lead to explicit formulas for the dynamical system that governs the driving functions. Our formulas give a simple method for mapping the class of rational functions into solutions to a non-trivial system of quadratic equations, and for directly showing that the curves in the real locus satisfy geometric commutation and have the geodesic multichord property. These results are entirely self-contained and have no reliance on probabilistic objects, but make use of an integral of motion for the Loewner chain that is motivated by ideas from conformal field theory. We also show that the dynamics of the driving functions are a special case of the Calogero-Moser integrable system, restricted to a particular submanifold of phase space carved out by the Lax matrix. Our approach complements a recent result of Peltola and Wang, who showed that the real locus is the deterministic kappa to 0 limit of the multiple SLE(kappa) curves.

Scaling Limits of Planar Symplectic Ensembles

We consider various asymptotic scaling limits $N\to\infty$ for the $2N$ complex eigenvalues of non-Hermitian random matrices in the symmetry class of the symplectic Ginibre ensemble. These are known to be integrable, forming Pfaffian point processes, and we obtain limiting expressions for the corresponding kernel for different potentials. The first part is devoted to the symplectic Ginibre ensemble with the Gaussian potential. We obtain the asymptotic at the edge of the spectrum in the vicinity of the real line. The unifying form of the kernel allows us to make contact with the bulk scaling along the real line and with the edge scaling away from the real line, where we recover the known determinantal process of the complex Ginibre ensemble. Part two covers ensembles of Mittag-Leffler type with a singularity at the origin. For potentials $Q(ζ)=|ζ|^{2λ}-(2c/N)\log|ζ|$, with $λ>0$ and $c>-1$, the limiting kernel obeys a linear differential equation of fractional order $1/λ$ at the origin. For integer $m=1/λ$ it can be solved in terms of Mittag-Leffler functions. In the last part, we derive Ward's equation for planar symplectic ensembles for a general class of potentials. It serves as a tool to investigate the Gaussian and singular Mittag-Leffler universality class. This allows us to determine the functional form of all possible limiting kernels (if they exist) that are translation invariant, up to their integration domain.

Conformal field theory on the Riemann sphere and its boundary version for SLE

From conformal field theory on the Riemann sphere, we implement its boundary version in a simply-connected domain using the Schottky double construction. We consider the statistical fields generated by background charge modification of the Gaussian free field with Dirichlet boundary condition under the OPE multiplications. We prove that the correlation functions of such fields with symmetric background charges form a collection of martingale-observables for (forward) chordal/radial SLE with force points and spins. We also present the connection between conformal field theory with Neumann boundary condition and the theory of backward SLE.

The random normal matrix model: insertion of a point charge

In this article, we study microscopic properties of a two-dimensional eigenvalue ensemble near a conical singularity arising from insertion of a point charge in the bulk of the support of eigenvalues. In particular, we characterize all rotationally symmetric scaling limits ('Mittag-Leffler fields') and obtain universality of them when the underlying potential is algebraic. Applications include a result on the asymptotic distribution of $\log|p_n(ζ)|$ where $p_n$ is the characteristic polynomial of an $n$:th order random normal matrix.

Conformal field theory for annulus SLE: partition functions and martingale-observables

We implement a version of conformal field theory in a doubly connected domain to connect it to the theory of annulus SLE of various types, including the standard annulus SLE, the reversible annulus SLE, and the annulus SLE with several force points. This implementation considers the statistical fields generated under the OPE multiplication by the Gaussian free field and its central/background charge modifications with a weighted combination of Dirichlet and excursion-reflected boundary conditions. We derive the Eguchi-Ooguri version of Ward's equations and Belavin-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov equations for those statistical fields and use them to show that the correlations of fields in the OPE family under the insertion of the one-leg operators are martingale-observables for variants of annulus SLEs. We find Coulomb gas (Dotsenko-Fateev integral) solutions to the parabolic partial differential equations for partition functions of conformal field theory for the reversible annulus SLE.

Real eigenvalues of elliptic random matrices

We consider the real eigenvalues of an $(N \times N)$ real elliptic Ginibre matrix whose entries are correlated through a non-Hermiticity parameter $τ_N\in [0,1]$. In the almost-Hermitian regime where $1-τ_N=Θ(N^{-1})$, we obtain the large-$N$ expansion of the mean and the variance of the number of the real eigenvalues. Furthermore, we derive the limiting empirical distributions of the real eigenvalues, which interpolate the Wigner semicircle law and the uniform distribution, the restriction of the elliptic law on the real axis. Our proofs are based on the skew-orthogonal polynomial representation of the correlation kernel due to Forrester and Nagao.

A non-Hermitian generalisation of the Marchenko-Pastur distribution: from the circular law to multi-criticality

We consider the complex eigenvalues of a Wishart type random matrix model $X=X_1 X_2^*$, where two rectangular complex Ginibre matrices $X_{1,2}$ of size $N\times (N+ν)$ are correlated through a non-Hermiticity parameter $τ\in[0,1]$. For general $ν=O(N)$ and $τ$ we obtain the global limiting density and its support, given by a shifted ellipse. It provides a non-Hermitian generalisation of the Marchenko-Pastur distribution, which is recovered at maximal correlation $X_1=X_2$ when $τ=1$. The square root of the complex Wishart eigenvalues, corresponding to the non-zero complex eigenvalues of the Dirac matrix $\mathcal{D}=\begin{pmatrix} 0 & X_1 \\ X_2^* & 0 \end{pmatrix},$ are supported in a domain parametrised by a quartic equation. It displays a lemniscate type transition at a critical value $τ_c,$ where the interior of the spectrum splits into two connected components. At multi-criticality we obtain the limiting local kernel given by the edge kernel of the Ginibre ensemble in squared variables. For the global statistics, we apply Frostman's equilibrium problem to the 2D Coulomb gas, whereas the local statistics follows from a saddle point analysis of the kernel of orthogonal Laguerre polynomials in the complex plane.

On boundary confinements for the Coulomb gas

We introduce a family of boundary confinements for Coulomb gas ensembles, and study them in the two-dimensional determinantal case of random normal matrices. The family interpolates between the free boundary and hard edge cases, which have been well studied in various random matrix theories. The confinement can also be relaxed beyond the free boundary to produce ensembles with more fuzzy boundaries, i.e., where the particles are more and more likely to be found outside of the boundary. The resulting ensembles are investigated with respect to scaling limits and distribution of the maximum modulus. In particular, we prove existence of a new point field - a limit of scaling limits to the ultraweak point when the droplet ceases to be well defined.

Scaling limits of random normal matrix processes at singular boundary points

We give a method for taking microscopic limits of normal matrix ensembles. We apply this method to study the behaviour near certain types of singular points on the boundary of the droplet. Our investigation includes ensembles without restrictions near the boundary, as well as hard edge ensembles, where the eigenvalues are confined to the droplet. We establish in both cases existence of new types of determinantal point fields, which differ from those which can appear at a regular boundary point, or in the bulk.

Calculus of conformal fields on a compact Riemann surface

We present analytical implementation of conformal field theory on a compact Riemann surface. We consider statistical fields constructed from background charge modifications of the Gaussian free field and derive Ward identities which represent the Lie derivative operators in terms of the Virasoro fields and the puncture operators associated with the background charges. As applications, we derive Eguchi-Ooguri's version of Ward's equations and certain types of BPZ equations on a torus.

Rescaling Ward identities in the random normal matrix model

We study existence and universality of scaling limits for the eigenvalues of a random normal matrix, in particular at points on the boundary of the spectrum. Our approach uses Ward's equation, which is an identity satisfied by the 1-point function.

Slit holomorphic stochastic flows and Gaussian free field

It was realized recently that the chordal, radial and dipolar SLEs are special cases of a general slit holomorphic stochastic flow. We characterize those slit holomorphic stochastic flows which generate level lines of the Gaussian free field. In particular, we describe the modifications of the Gaussian free field (GFF) corresponding to the chordal and dipolar SLE with drifts. Finally, we develop a version of conformal field theory based on the background charge and Dirichlet boundary condition modifications of GFF and present martingale-observables for these types of SLEs.

Conformal field theory of dipolar SLE with the Dirichlet boundary condition

We develop a version of dipolar conformal field theory based on the central charge modification of the Gaussian free field with the Dirichlet boundary condition and prove that correlators of certain family of fields in this theory are martingale-observables for dipolar SLE. We prove the restriction property of dipolar SLE(8/3) and Friedrich-Werner's formula in the dipolar case.

Conformal field theory of dipolar SLE(4) with mixed boundary condition

We develop a version of dipolar conformal field theory in a simply connected domain with the Dirichlet-Neumann boundary condition and central charge one. We prove that all correlation functions of the fields in the OPE family of Gaussian free field with a certain boundary value are martingale-observables for dipolar SLE(4).

Gaussian free field and conformal field theory

In these mostly expository lectures, we give an elementary introduction to conformal field theory in the context of probability theory and complex analysis. We consider statistical fields, and define Ward functionals in terms of their Lie derivatives. Based on this approach, we explain some equations of conformal field theory and outline their relation to SLE theory.
