Neutron Scattering Investigation of Rhenium Orbital Ordering in $3d-5d$ Double Perovskite Ca$_2$FeReO$_6$

We have carried out inelastic neutron scattering experiments to study magnetic excitations in ordered double perovskite Ca$_2$FeReO$_6$. We found a well-defined magnon mode with a bandwidth of $\sim$50meV below the ferri-magnetic ordering temperature ($T_c\sim$520K), similar to previously studied Ba$_2$FeReO$_6$. The spin excitation is gapless for most temperatures within the magnetically ordered phase. However, a spin gap of $\sim$10meV opens up below $\sim$150K, which is well below the magnetic ordering temperature but coincides with a previously reported metal-insulator transition and onset of structural distortion. The observed temperature dependence of spin gap provides strong evidence for ordering of Re orbitals at $\sim$150~K, in accordance with earlier proposal put forward by Oikawa $\it{et.\,al}$ based on neutron diffraction [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn., $\bf{72}$, 1411 (2003)] as well as recent theoretical work by Lee and Marianetti [Phys. Rev. B, $\bf{97}$, 045102 (2018)]. The presence of separate orbital and magnetic ordering in Ca$_2$FeReO$_6$ suggests weak coupling between spin and orbital degrees of freedom and hints towards a sub-dominant role played by spin orbit coupling in describing its magnetism. In addition, we observed only one well-defined magnon band near magnetic zone boundary, which is incompatible with simple ferrimagnetic spin waves arising from Fe and Re local moments, but suggests a strong damping of Re magnon mode.

Element-Specific Orbital Character in a Nearly-Free-Electron Superconductor Ag$_5$Pb$_2$O$_6$ Revealed by Core-Level Photoemission

Ag$_5$Pb$_2$O$_6$ has attracted considerable attention due to its novel nearly-free-electron superconductivity, but its electronic structure and orbital character of the Cooper-pair electrons remain controversial. Here, we present a method utilizing core-level photoemission to show that Pb 6$s$ electrons dominate near the Fermi level. We observe a strongly asymmetric Pb 4$f_{7/2}$ core-level spectrum, while a Ag 3$d_{5/2}$ spectrum is well explained by two symmetric peaks. The asymmetry in the Pb 4$f_{7/2}$ spectrum originates from the local attractive interaction between conducting Pb 6$s$ electrons and a Pb 4$f_{7/2}$ core hole, which implies a dominant Pb 6$s$ contribution to the metallic conduction. In addition, the observed Pb 4$f_{7/2}$ spectrum is not explained by the well-known Doniach-Šunjić lineshape for a simple metal. The spectrum is successfully generated by employing a Pb 6$s$ partial density of states from local density approximation calculations, thus confirming the Pb 6$s$ dominant character and free-electron-like density of states of Ag$_5$Pb$_2$O$_6$.

Electronic Structure of the Kitaev Material $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ Probed by Photoemission and Inverse Photoemission Spectroscopies

Recently, $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ has attracted much attention as a possible material realization of the honeycomb Kitaev model, which may stabilize a quantum-spin-liquid state. Compared to extensive studies on its magnetic properties, there is still a lack of understanding on its electronic structure, which is strongly related with its Kitaev physics. Here, the electronic structure of $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ is investigated by photoemission (PE) and inverse photoemission (IPE) spectroscopies. The band gap, directly measured from PE/IPE spectra, is found to be 1.9 eV, much larger than previous estimations. The LDA calculations show that the on-site Coulomb interaction $\textit{U}$ can open the band gap without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). However, the SOC should also be incorporated to reproduce the proper gap size, indicating that the interplay between $\textit{U}$ and SOC plays an essential role in the physics of $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$. There exist some spectral features in PE/IPE spectra which cannot be explained by the LDA calculations. To explain such discrepancies, we perform the configuration-interaction calculations for a ${\textrm{RuCl}}_6^{3-}$ cluster. The experimental data and calculations demonstrate that the 4$\textit{d}$ compound $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$ is a $J_{\textrm{eff}}$ = 1/2 Mott insulator rather than a quasimolecular-orbital insulator. Our study also provides important physical parameters, required in verifying the proposed Kitaev physics in $α$-$\textrm{RuCl}_3$.

Time-Resolved Quasiparticle Dynamics in the Spin-Density-Wave State

Time-resolved photoinduced reflectivity is measured in the spin-density-wave (SDW) phase using itinerant antiferromagnets UMGa$_{5}$ (M=Ni, Pt). For UNiGa$_{5}$ [$T_{N}$=85 K, $Q$=($π$,$π$,$π$)], the relaxation time $τ$ shows a sharp increase at $T_{N}$ consistent with the opening of a SDW gap. For UPtGa$_{5}$ [$T_{N}$=26 K, $Q$=(0,0,$π$)], no change in $τ$ is observed at $T_{N}$ or at the lowest temperatures. We attribute this to the absence of the SDW gap at the Fermi level, due to a different modulation vector $Q$, which leads to a gapless quasiparticle spectrum. Our results challenge the conventional wisdom that a SDW phase necessarily implies a SDW gap at the Fermi level.

Quasiparticle Relaxation Across a Spin Gap in the Itinerant Antiferromagnet UNiGa5

Ultrafast time-resolved photoinduced reflectivity is measured for the itinerant antiferromagnet UNiGa$_{5}$ ($T_{N} \approx$85 K) from room temperature to 10 K. The relaxation time $τ$ shows a sharp increase at $T_{N}$ consistent with the opening of a spin gap. In addition, the temperature dependence of $τ$ below $T_{N}$ is consistent with the opening of a spin gap leading to a quasiparticle recombination bottleneck as revealed by the Rothwarf-Taylor model. This contrasts with canonical heavy fermions such as CeCoIn$_{5}$ where the recombination bottleneck arises from the hybridization gap.
