On the Minimum Energy of Sending Gaussian Multiterminal Sources over the Gaussian MAC

In this work, we investigate the minimum energy of transmitting correlated sources over the Gaussian multiple-access channel (MAC). Compared to other works on joint source-channel coding, we consider the general scenario where the source and channel bandwidths are not naturally matched. In particular, we proposed the use of hybrid digital-analog coding over to improve the transmission energy efficiency. Different models of correlated sources are studied. We first consider lossless transmission of binary sources over the MAC. We then treat lossy transmission of Gaussian sources over the Gaussian MAC, including CEO sources and multiterminal sources. In all cases, we show that hybrid transmission achieves the best known energy efficiency.

Chaos control in random Boolean networks by reducing mean damage percolation rate

Chaos control in Random Boolean networks is implemented by freezing part of the network to drive it from chaotic to ordered phase. However, controlled nodes are only viewed as passive blocks to prevent perturbation spread. This paper proposes a new control method in which controlled nodes can exert an active impact on the network. Controlled nodes and frozen values are deliberately selected according to the information of connection and Boolean functions. Simulation results show that the number of nodes needed to achieve control is largely reduced compared to previous method. Theoretical analysis is also given to estimate the least fraction of nodes needed to achieve control.

Formation Mechanism of Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet

Atmospheric pressure plasma jet can protrude some 5.0 cm into air. It holds promise for multivarious innovative applications, but its formation mechanism remains unsettled. We show that the plasma jet is essentially a streamer corona totally independent of, but obscured by, dielectric barrier discharge. Consequently, the jets can be equally successfully generated even with one single bare metal electrode attached to the tube orifice, both downstream and upstream simultaneously, and at a significantly reduced voltage. These results will help understand the underlying physics and facilitate a safer and more flexible implementation of this marvelous plasma source.
