Elevating zero dimensional global scaling predictions to self-consistent theory-based simulations

We have developed an innovative workflow, STEP-0D, within the OMFIT integrated modelling framework. Through systematic validation against the International Tokamak Physics Activity (ITPA) global H-mode confinement database, we demonstrated that STEP-0D, on average, predicts the energy confinement time with a mean relative error (MRE) of less than 19%. Moreover, this workflow showed promising potential in predicting plasmas for proposed fusion reactors such as ARC, EU-DEMO, and CFETR, indicating moderate H-factors between 0.9 and 1.2. STEP-0D allows theory-based prediction of tokamak scenarios, beginning with zero-dimensional (0D) quantities. The workflow initiates with the PRO-create module, generating physically consistent plasma profiles and equilibrium using the same 0D quantities as the IPB98(y,2) confinement scaling. This sets the starting point for the STEP (Stability, Transport, Equilibrium, and Pedestal) module, which further iterates between theory-based physics models of equilibrium, core transport, and pedestal to yield a self-consistent solution. Given these attributes, STEP-0D not only improves the accuracy of predicting plasma performance but also provides a path towards a novel fusion power plant (FPP) design workflow. When integrated with engineering and costing models within an optimization, this new approach could eliminate the iterative reconciliation between plasma models of varying fidelity. This potential for a more efficient design process underpins STEP-0D's significant contribution to future fusion power plant development.

Almost-Gelfand Property of Symmetric Pairs

In this paper, we show almost-Gelfand property of connected symmetric pairs (G, H) over finite fields of large characteristics. We will show almost-σ-invariant property of double coset H\G/H where σis the associated anti-involution, and ε-version of Gelfand's trick to make use of the fixed points of anti-involution.

Spherical Tiling by 12 Congruent Pentagons

The tilings of the 2-dimensional sphere by congruent triangles have been extensively studied, and the edge-to-edge tilings have been completely classified. However, not much is known about the tilings by other congruent polygons. In this paper, we classify the simplest case, which is the edge-to-edge tilings of the 2-dimensional sphere by 12 congruent pentagons. We find one major class allowing two independent continuous parameters and four classes of isolated examples. The classification is done by first separately classifying the combinatorial, edge length, and angle aspects, and then combining the respective classifications together.

Boundary layer structure in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection

The structure of the boundary layers in turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection is studied by means of three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. We consider convection in a cylindrical cell at an aspect ratio one for Rayleigh numbers of Ra=3e+9 and 3e+10 at fixed Prandtl number Pr=0.7. Similar to the experimental results in the same setup and for the same Prandtl number, the structure of the laminar boundary layers of the velocity and temperature fields is found to deviate from the prediction of the Prandtl-Blasius-Pohlhausen theory. Deviations decrease when a dynamical rescaling of the data with an instantaneously defined boundary layer thickness is performed and the analysis plane is aligned with the instantaneous direction of the large-scale circulation in the closed cell. Our numerical results demonstrate that important assumptions which enter existing classical laminar boundary layer theories for forced and natural convection are violated, such as the strict two-dimensionality of the dynamics or the steadiness of the fluid motion. The boundary layer dynamics consists of two essential local dynamical building blocks, a plume detachment and a post-plume phase. The former is associated with larger variations of the instantaneous thickness of velocity and temperature boundary layer and a fully three-dimensional local flow. The post-plume dynamics is connected with the large-scale circulation in the cell that penetrates the boundary region from above. The mean turbulence profiles taken in localized sections of the boundary layer for both dynamical phases are also compared with solutions of perturbation expansions of the boundary layer equations of forced or natural convection towards mixed convection. Our analysis of both boundary layers shows that the near-wall dynamics combines elements of forced Blasius-type and natural convection.
