Three loop HTL perturbation theory at finite temperature and chemical potential

In this proceedings contribution we present a recent three-loop hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) calculation of the thermodynamic potential for a finite temperature and chemical potential system of quarks and gluons. We compare the resulting pressure, trace anomaly, and diagonal/off-diagonal quark susceptibilities with lattice data. We show that there is good agreement between the three-loop HTLpt analytic result and available lattice data.

Three-loop HTLpt thermodynamics at finite temperature and chemical potential

We calculate the three-loop thermodynamic potential of QCD at finite temperature and chemical potential(s) using the hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) reorganization of finite temperature and density QCD. The resulting analytic thermodynamic potential allows us to compute the pressure, energy density, and entropy density of the quark-gluon plasma. Using these we calculate the trace anomaly, speed of sound, and second-, fourth-, and sixth-order quark number susceptibilities. For all observables considered we find good agreement between our three-loop HTLpt calculations and available lattice data for temperatures above approximately 300 MeV.

Three-loop HTLpt Pressure and Susceptibilities at Finite Temperature and Density

We present results of a three-loop hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory calculation of the thermodynamical potential of a finite temperature and baryon chemical potential system of quarks and gluons. We compare the resulting pressure and diagonal quark susceptibilities with available lattice data. We find reasonable agreement between our analytic results and lattice data at both zero and finite chemical potential.

Equation of State of hot and dense QCD: Resummed perturbation theory confronts lattice data

We perform a detailed analysis of the predictions of resummed perturbation theory for the pressure and the second-, fourth-, and sixth-order diagonal quark number susceptibilities in a hot and dense quark-gluon plasma. First, we present an exact one-loop calculation of the equation of state within hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) and compare it to a previous one-loop HTLpt calculation that employed an expansion in the ratios of thermal masses and the temperature. We find that this expansion converges reasonably fast. We then perform a resummation of the existing four-loop weak coupling expression for the pressure, motivated by dimensional reduction. Finally, we compare the exact one-loop HTLpt and resummed dimensional reduction results with state-of-the-art lattice calculations and a recent mass-expanded three-loop HTLpt calculation.

Stabilizing perturbative Yang-Mills thermodynamics with Gribov quantization

We evaluate the thermodynamic quantities of Yang-Mills theory using the Gribov quantization, which deals with nonperturbative resummation. The magnetic scale is automatically incorporated into the framework and we find it efficient to stabilize the perturbative expansion of the free energy. In the temperature range $T=T_c \sim 2\,T_c$ the major uncertainty in our results comes from the nonperturbative running coupling that is adopted from the lattice simulation, while the convergence above $2\,T_c$ is impressively robust. We also present the corresponding interaction measure (i.e., trace anomaly) up to close to $T_c$.

A renormalization group approach for QCD in a strong magnetic field

A Wilsonian renormalization group approach is applied, in order to include effects of the higher Landau levels for quarks into a set of renormalized parameters for the lowest Landau level (LLL), plus a set of operators made of the LLL fields. Most of the calculations can be done in a model-independent way with perturbation theory for hard gluons, thanks to form factors of quark-gluon vertices that arise from the Ritus bases for quark fields. As a part of such renormalization program, we compute the renormalized quark self-energy at 1-loop, including effects from all higher orbital levels. The result indicates that the higher orbital levels cease to strongly affect the LLL at a rather small magnetic field of (0.1 - 0.3) GeV^2.

Quark number susceptibilities from resummed perturbation theory

We evaluate the second and fourth order quark number susceptibilities in hot QCD using two variations of resummed perturbation theory. On one hand, we carry out a one-loop calculation within hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory, and on the other hand perform a resummation of the four-loop finite density equation of state derived using a dimensionally reduced effective theory. Our results are subsequently compared with recent high precision lattice data, and their agreement thoroughly analyzed.

The quark mass gap in a magnetic field

A magnetic field and the resulting Landau degeneracy enhance the infrared contributions to the quark mass gap. The gap does not grow arbitrarily, however, for models of asymptotic free interactions. For B -> infinity, the magnetic field decouples from the dimensionally reduced self-consistent equations, so that the gap behaves as ~ Lambda_QCD (or less), instead of ~ |eB|^{1/2}. On the other hand, the number of participants to the chiral condensate keeps increasing as ~ |eB| so that |<\barψ ψ>| ~ |eB| Lambda_QCD. After the mass gap stops developing, nothing tempers the growth of screening effects as B -> infinity. These features are utilized to interpret the reduction of critical temperatures for the chiral and deconfinement at finite B, recently found on the lattice. The structures of mesons are analyzed and light mesons are identified. Applications for cold, dense quark matter are also briefly discussed.

A brief overview of hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory

The poor convergence of quantum field theory at finite temperature has been one of the main obstacles in the practical applications of thermal QCD for decades. Here we briefly review the progress of hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) in reorganizing the perturbative expansion in order to improve the convergence. The quantum mechanical anharmonic oscillator is used as a simple example to show the breakdown of weak-coupling expansion, and variational perturbation theory is introduced as an effective resummation scheme for divergent weak-coupling expansions. We discuss HTLpt thermodynamic calculations for QED, pure-glue QCD, and QCD with N_f=3 up to three-loop order. The results suggest that HTLpt provides a systematic framework that can be used to calculate both static and dynamic quantities for temperatures relevant at LHC.

The QCD trace anomaly

In this brief report we compare the predictions of a recent next-to-next-to-leading order hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) calculation of the QCD trace anomaly to available lattice data. We focus on the trace anomaly scaled by T^2 in two cases: N_f=0 and N_f=3. When using the canonical value of mu = 2 pi T for the renormalization scale, we find that for Yang-Mills theory (N_f=0) agreement between HTLpt and lattice data for the T^2-scaled trace anomaly begins at temperatures on the order of 8 T_c while when including quarks (N_f=3) agreement begins already at temperatures above 2 T_c. In both cases we find that at very high temperatures the T^2-scaled trace anomaly increases with temperature in accordance with the predictions of HTLpt.

Three-loop HTL QCD thermodynamics

The hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) framework is used to calculate the thermodynamic functions of a quark-gluon plasma to three-loop order. This is the highest order accessible by finite temperature perturbation theory applied to a non-Abelian gauge theory before the high-temperature infrared catastrophe. All ultraviolet divergences are eliminated by renormalization of the vacuum, the HTL mass parameters, and the strong coupling constant. After choosing a prescription for the mass parameters, the three-loop results for the pressure and trace anomaly are found to be in very good agreement with recent lattice data down to $T \sim 2-3\,T_c$, which are temperatures accessible by current and forthcoming heavy-ion collision experiments.

A Gauge-Invariant Reorganization of Thermal Gauge Theory

This dissertation is devoted to the study of thermodynamics for quantum gauge theories. The poor convergence of quantum field theory at finite temperature has been the main obstacle in the practical applications of thermal QCD for decades. In this dissertation I apply hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory, which is a gauge-invariant reorganization of the conventional perturbative expansion for quantum gauge theories to the thermodynamics of QED and Yang-Mills theory to three-loop order. For the Abelian case, I present a calculation of the free energy of a hot gas of electrons and photons by expanding in a power series in $m_D/T$, $m_f/T$ and $e^2$, where $m_D$ and $m_f$ are the photon and electron thermal masses, respectively, and $e$ is the coupling constant. I demonstrate that the hard-thermal-loop perturbation reorganization improves the convergence of the successive approximations to the QED free energy at large coupling, $e \sim 2$. For the non-Abelian case, I present a calculation of the free energy of a hot gas of gluons by expanding in a power series in $m_D/T$ and $g^2$, where $m_D$ is the gluon thermal mass and $g$ is the coupling constant. I show that at three-loop order hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory is compatible with lattice results for the pressure, energy density, and entropy down to temperatures $T \sim 2-3\;T_c$. The results suggest that HTLpt provides a systematic framework that can be used to calculate static and dynamic quantities for temperatures relevant at LHC.

QCD Thermodynamics at Intermediate Coupling

The weak-coupling expansion of the QCD free energy is known to order g_s^6log{g_s}, however, the resulting series is poorly convergent at phenomenologically relevant temperatures. In this proceedings, I discuss hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) which is a gauge-invariant reorganization of the perturbative expansion for gauge theories. I review a recent NNLO HTLpt calculation of QCD thermodynamic functions. I show that the NNLO HTLpt results are consistent with lattice data down to temperatures T~2T_c.

Hard-thermal-loop QCD Thermodynamics

Naively resummed perturbative approximations to the thermodynamic functions of QCD do not converge at phenomenologically relevant temperatures. Here we review recent results of a three-loop hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory calculation of the thermodynamic functions of a quark-gluon plasma for general N_c and N_f. We show comparisons of our recent results with lattice data from both the hotQCD and Wuppertal-Budapest groups. We demonstrate that the three-loop hard-thermal-loop perturbation result for QCD thermodynamics agrees with lattice data down to temperatures T ~ 2 T_c.

NNLO hard-thermal-loop thermodynamics for QCD

We calculate the thermodynamic functions of a quark-gluon plasma for general N_c and N_f to three-loop order using hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory. At this order, all the ultraviolet divergences can be absorbed into renormalizations of the vacuum, the HTL mass parameters, and the strong coupling constant. We show that at three loops, the results for the pressure and trace anomaly are in very good agreement with recent lattice data down to temperatures T~2T_c.

Hard-thermal-loop QED thermodynamics

The weak-coupling expansion for thermodynamic quantities in thermal field theories is poorly convergent unless the coupling constant is tiny. We discuss the calculation of the free energy for a hot gas of electrons and photons to three-loop order using hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt). We show that the hard-thermal-loop perturbation reorganization improves the convergence of the successive approximations to the QED free energy at large coupling, e ~ 2. The reorganization is gauge invariant by construction, and due to the cancellations among various contributions, we obtain a completely analytic result for the resummed thermodynamic potential at three loops.
