Cooling of the rotation of a nanodiamond via the interaction with the electron spin of the contained NV-center

We propose a way to cool the rotation of a nanodiamond, which contains a NV-center and is levitated by an optical tweezer. Following the rotation of the particle, the NV-center electron spin experiences varying external fields and so leads to spin-rotation coupling. By optically pumping the electrons from a higher energy level to a lower level, the rotation energy is dissipated. We give the analytical result for the damping torque exerted on the nanodiamond, and evaluate the final cooling temperature by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. It's shown that the quantum regime of the rotation can be reached with our scheme.

Quantum sensing enhanced by adaptive periodic quantum control

Using a single quantum probe to sense other quantum objects offers distinct advantages but suffers from some limitations that may degrade the sensing precision severely, especially when the probe-target coupling is weak. Here we propose a strategy to improve the sensing precision by using the quantum probe to engineer the evolution of the target. We consider an exactly solvable model, in which a qubit is used as the probe to sense the frequency of a harmonic oscillator. We show that by applying adaptive periodic quantum control on the qubit, the sensing precision can be enhanced from 1/T scaling with the total time cost T to 1/T^{2} scaling, thus improving the precision by several orders of magnitudes. Such improvement can be achieved without any direct access to the oscillator and the improvement increases with decreasing probe-target coupling. This provides a useful routine to ultrasensitive quantum sensing of weakly coupled quantum objects.

Computation over Wide-Band MAC: Improved Achievable Rate through Sub-Function Allocation

Future networks are expected to connect an enormous number of nodes wirelessly using wide-band transmission. This brings great challenges. To avoid collecting a large amount of data from the massive number of nodes, computation over multi-access channel (CoMAC) is proposed to compute a desired function over the air utilizing the signal-superposition property of MAC. Due to frequency selective fading, wide-band CoMAC is more challenging and has never been studied before. In this work, we propose the use of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in wide-band CoMAC to transmit functions in a similar way to bit sequences through division, allocation and reconstruction of function. An achievable rate without any adaptive resource allocation is derived. To prevent a vanishing computation rate from the increase of the number of nodes, a novel sub-function allocation of sub-carriers is derived. Furthermore, we formulate an optimization problem considering power allocation. A sponge-squeezing algorithm adapted from the classical water-filling algorithm is proposed to solve the optimal power allocation problem. The improved computation rate of the proposed framework and the corresponding allocation has been verified through both theoretical analysis and simulation.

Sensitivity of Displacement Detection for a Particle Levitated in the Doughnut Beam

Displacement detection of a sphere particle in focused laser beams with quadrant photodetector (QPD) provides a fast and high precision way to determine the particle location. In contrast to the traditional Gaussian beams, the sensitivity of displacement detection using various doughnut beams are investigated. The sensitivity improvement for large sphere particles along the longitudinal direction is reported. With appropriate vortex charge $l$ of the doughnut beams, they can outperform the Gaussian beam to get more than one order higher sensitivity and thus have potential applications in various high precision measurement. By using the levitating doughnut beam itself to detect the particle displacement, the result will also facilitate the recent proposal of levitating a particle in doughnut beams to suppress the light absorption.

RGB-T Object Tracking:Benchmark and Baseline

RGB-Thermal (RGB-T) object tracking receives more and more attention due to the strongly complementary benefits of thermal information to visible data. However, RGB-T research is limited by lacking a comprehensive evaluation platform. In this paper, we propose a large-scale video benchmark dataset for RGB-T tracking. It has three major advantages over existing ones: 1) Its size is sufficiently large for large-scale performance evaluation (total frame number: 234K, maximum frame per sequence: 8K). 2) The alignment between RGB-T sequence pairs is highly accurate, which does not need pre- or post-processing. 3) The occlusion levels are annotated for occlusion-sensitive performance analysis of different tracking algorithms. Moreover, we propose a novel graph-based approach to learn a robust object representation for RGB-T tracking. In particular, the tracked object is represented with a graph with image patches as nodes. This graph including graph structure, node weights and edge weights is dynamically learned in a unified ADMM (alternating direction method of multipliers)-based optimization framework, in which the modality weights are also incorporated for adaptive fusion of multiple source data.Extensive experiments on the large-scale dataset are executed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed tracker against other state-of-the-art tracking methods. We also provide new insights and potential research directions to the field of RGB-T object tracking.

Synthetic cooling translational mode of an optically trapped nanoparticle through librational mode

We systematically investigate the multi-stability behaviour and cooling of both librational and translational modes of an optically levitated nonspherical nanoparticle. By expanding the trapping potential to the fourth order of both the translational and librational freedom degrees, we deduce the nonlinearity of them and their nonlinear coupling. Through stability analysis, we find that the system presents multi-stability when either the librational or the translational drive is red-detuned. The system will be stabilized if and only if these two drives are both blue-detuned. In the steady state region, we study the synthetic cooling scheme of translational mode by utilising librational mode. We find that matching the driving amplitude of these two modes and appropriate air pressure can optimize synthetic cooling. The synthetic cooling limit can be greatly improved, if we combine the feedback cooling with the synthetic cooling.

A Survey of Channel Modeling for UAV Communications

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have gained great interest for rapid deployment in both civil and military applications. UAV communication has its own distinctive channel characteristics compared with widely used cellular and satellite systems. Thus, accurate channel characterization is crucial for the performance optimization and design of efficient UAV communication systems. However, several challenges exist in UAV channel modeling. For example, propagation characteristics of UAV channels are still less explored for spatial and temporal variations in non\textendash stationary channels. Also, airframe shadowing has not yet been investigated for small size rotary UAVs. This paper provides an extensive survey on the measurement campaigns launched for UAV channel modeling using low altitude platforms and discusses various channel characterization efforts. We also review the contemporary perspective of UAV channel modeling approaches and outline some future research challenges in this domain.

Precise measurement of coupling strength and high temperature quantum effect in a nonlinearly coupled qubit-oscillator system

We study the coherence dynamics of a qubit coupled to a harmonic oscillator with both linear and quadratic interactions. As long as the linear coupling strength is much smaller than the oscillator frequency, the long time behavior of the coherence is dominated by the quadratic coupling strength $g_2$. The coherence decays and revives at a period $2π/g_2$, with the width of coherence peak decreases as the temperature increases, hence providing a way to measure $g_2$ precisely without cooling. Unlike the case of linear coupling, here the coherence dynamics never reduces to the classical limit in which the oscillator is classical. Finally, the validity of linear coupling approximation is discussed and the coherence under Hahn-echo is evaluated

Bistability and squeezing of the librational mode of an optically trapped nanoparticle

We systematically investigate the bistable behavior and squeezing property of the librational mode of a levitated nonspherical nanoparticle trapped by laser beams. By expanding the librational potential to the forth order of the librational angle $θ$, we find that the nonlinear coefficient of this mode is dependent only on the size and material of nanoparticle, but independent of trapping potential shape. The bistability and hysteresis are displayed when the driving frequency is red-detuned to the librational mode. In the blue-detuned region, we have studied squeezing of the variance of librational mode in detail, which has potential application for measurement of angle and angular momentum.

Interference-Alignment and Soft-Space-Reuse Based Cooperative Transmission for Multi-cell Massive MIMO Networks

As a revolutionary wireless transmission strategy, interference alignment (IA) can improve the capacity of the cell-edge users. However, the acquisition of the global channel state information (CSI) for IA leads to unacceptable overhead in the massive MIMO systems. To tackle this problem, in this paper, we propose an IA and soft-space-reuse (IA-SSR) based cooperative transmission scheme under the two-stage precoding framework. Specifically, the cell-center and the cell-edge users are separately treated to fully exploit the spatial degrees of freedoms (DoF). Then, the optimal power allocation policy is developed to maximize the sum-capacity of the network. Next, a low-cost channel estimator is designed for the proposed IA-SSR framework. Some practical issues in IA-SSR implementation are also discussed. Finally, plenty of numerical results are presented to show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

Base Station Selection for Massive MIMO Networks with Two-stage Precoding

The two-stage precoding has been proposed to reduce the overhead of both the channel training and the channel state information (CSI) feedback for the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. But the overlap of the angle-spreading-ranges (ASR) for different user clusters may seriously degrade the performance of the two-stage precoding. In this letter, we propose one ASR overlap mitigating scheme through the base station (BS) selection. Firstly, the BS selection is formulated as a sum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) maximization problem. Then, the problem is solved by a low-complex algorithm through maximizing signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (SLNR). In addition, we propose one low-overhead algorithm with the lower bound on the average SLNR as the objective function. Finally, we demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed schemes through the numerical simulations.

Performance Optimization of Network Coding Based Communication and Reliable Storage in Internet of Things

Internet or things (IoT) is changing our daily life rapidly. Although new technologies are emerging everyday and expanding their influence in this rapidly growing area, many classic theories can still find their places. In this paper, we study the important applications of the classic network coding theory in two important components of Internet of things, including the IoT core network, where data is sensed and transmitted, and the distributed cloud storage, where the data generated by the IoT core network is stored. First we propose an adaptive network coding (ANC) scheme in the IoT core network to improve the transmission efficiency. We demonstrate the efficacy of the scheme and the performance advantage over existing schemes through simulations. %Next we study the application of network coding in the distributed cloud storage. Next we introduce the optimal storage allocation problem in the network coding based distributed cloud storage, which aims at searching for the most reliable allocation that distributes the $n$ data components into $N$ data centers, given the failure probability $p$ of each data center. Then we propose a polynomial-time optimal storage allocation (OSA) scheme to solve the problem. Both the theoretical analysis and the simulation results show that the storage reliability could be greatly improved by the OSA scheme.

Joint Optimization of Power Splitting and Allocation for SWIPT in Interference Alignment Networks

Interference alignment (IA) is a promising solution for interference management in wireless networks. On the other hand, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) has become an emerging technique. Although some works have been done on IA and SWIPT, these two important areas have traditionally been addressed separately in the literature. In this paper, we propose to use a common framework to jointly study IA and SWIPT. We analyze the performance of SWIPT in IA networks. Specifically, we derive the upper bound of the power that can be harvested in IA networks. In addition, we show that, to improve the performance of wireless power transfer and information transmission, users should be dynamically selected as energy harvesting (EH) or information decoding (ID) terminals. Furthermore, we design two easy-implemented SWIPT-user selection (SWIPT-US) algorithms in IA networks. To optimize the ID and EH performance of SWIPT in IA networks, a power-splitting optimization (PSO) algorithm is proposed when power splitters are available, and its closed-form optimal solutions are derived. Power allocation in the PSO algorithm is also studied to further optimize the performance. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Optical Levitation of Nanodiamonds by Doughnut Beams in Vacuum

Optically levitated nanodiamonds with nitrogen-vacancy centers promise a high-quality hybrid spin-optomechanical system. However, the trapped nanodiamond absorbs energy form laser beams and causes thermal damage in vacuum. We propose to solve the problem by trapping a composite particle (a nanodiamond core coated with a less absorptive silica shell) at the center of strongly focused doughnut-shaped laser beams. Systematical study on the trapping stability, heat absorption, and oscillation frequency concludes that the azimuthally polarized Gaussian beam and the linearly polarized Laguerre-Gaussian beam ${\rm LG}_{03}$ are the optimal choices. With our proposal, particles with strong absorption coefficients can be trapped without obvious heating and, thus, the spin-optomechanical system based on levitated nanodiamonds are made possible in high vacuum with the present experimental techniques.

Proposal for Observing Dynamic Jahn-Teller Effect of Single Solid-State Defects

Jahn-Teller effect (JTE) widely exists in polyatomic systems including organic molecules, nano-magnets, and solid-state defects. Detecting the JTE at single-molecule level can provide unique properties about the detected individual object. However, such measurements are challenging because of the weak signals associated with a single quantum object. Here, we propose that the dynamic JTE of single defects in solids can be observed with nearby quantum sensors. With numerical simulations, we demonstrate the real-time monitoring of quantum jumps between different stable configurations of single substitutional nitrogen defect centers (P1 centers) in diamond. This is achieved by measuring the spin coherence of a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center near the P1 center with the double electron-electron resonance (DEER) technique. Our work extends the ability of NV center as a quantum probe to sense the rich physics in various electron-vibrational coupled systems.

Recognition of Emotions using Kinects

Psychological studies indicate that emotional states are expressed in the way people walk and the human gait is investigated in terms of its ability to reveal a person's emotional state. And Microsoft Kinect is a rapidly developing, inexpensive, portable and no-marker motion capture system. This paper gives a new referable method to do emotion recognition, by using Microsoft Kinect to do gait pattern analysis, which has not been reported. $59$ subjects are recruited in this study and their gait patterns are record by two Kinect cameras. Significant joints selecting, Coordinate system transforming, Slider window gauss filter, Differential operation, and Data segmentation are used in data preprocessing. Feature extracting is based on Fourier transformation. By using the NaiveBayes, RandomForests, libSVM and SMO classification, the recognition rate of natural and unnatural emotions can reach above 70%.It is concluded that using the Kinect system can be a new method in recognition of emotions.

Detection of a weak magnetic field via cavity enhanced Faraday rotation

We study the sensitive detection of a weak static magnetic field via Faraday rotation induced by an ensemble of spins in a bimodal degenerate microwave cavity. We determine the limit of the resolution for the sensitivity of the magnetometry achieved using either single-photon or multiphoton inputs. For the case of a microwave cavity containing an ensemble of Nitrogen-vacancy defects in diamond, we obtain a magnetometry sensitivity exceeding $0.5~\text{\nano\tesla}/\sqrt{\text{\hertz}}$, utilizing a single photon probe field, while for a multiphoton input we achieve a sensitivity about $1 \text{\femto\tesla}/\sqrt{\text{\hertz}}$, using a coherent probe microwave field with power of $P_\text{in}=1~\text{\nano\watt}$.

Resolving Remoter Nuclear Spins in a Noisy Bath by Dynamical Decoupling Design

We experimentally resolve several weakly coupled nuclear spins in diamond using a series of novelly designed dynamical decoupling controls. Some nuclear spin signals, hidden by decoherence under ordinary dynamical decoupling controls, are shifted forward in time domain to the coherence time range and thus rescued from the fate of being submerged by the noisy spin bath. In this way, more and remoter single nuclear spins are resolved. Additionally, the field of detection can be continuously tuned on sub-nanoscale. This method extends the capacity of nanoscale magnetometry and may be applicable in other systems for high-resolution noise spectroscopy.
